In one day, everything changed for John.
On the morning of October 18, 2023, John was filled with excitement and anticipation. He was on his way to a new job as a ski resort executive chef for the winter—a great opportunity with unique benefits including on-site living. Before clocking in, John decided to stop for coffee not knowing it would change the course of his day… and his life. With fresh coffee in hand, John slipped on a curb to avoid an oncoming car, shattering his hip and pelvis. He never got to clock in. His 45-year-long career of bringing culinary visions to life and curating perfect menus was over. John was left unemployed, homeless, and hopeless. With nowhere to go after his hospital release, John called dozens of shelters across the Midwest. All were unable to take him in his condition... except one. “New Life Center was the only shelter that welcomed me with open arms knowing I had unique medical needs. I am overwhelmed by the care and concern the staff have for me here,” said John. John is being cared for in our Medical Respite Program (acute rehabilitation care). Taking it one day at a time, he is now on a journey of healing and is hopeful to walk again soon.
