rowing up in a tough Chicago suburb as the youngest of four, Shawntae faced a cycle of neglect. With little affection from his mother and his father’s approval always out of reach, he turned to gang life at a young age, searching for the belonging he so desperately craved.
At 26, now a husband and father, Shawntae joined the Army, driven by a deep sense of duty to his country and responsibility to his family. Determined to leave behind his troubled past, he envisioned a future built on purpose and stability.
But the challenges of military life proved overwhelming. The intense combat training and high expectations were compounded by the difficulty of leaving his deaf wife to care for their children alone. The strain took its toll, and Shawntae turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Behavioral issues and fights marred his service, and after just 18 months, he left the Army, burdened by addiction and unresolved emotions. His struggles ultimately ended his marriage.
Shawntae’s downward spiral continued for decades. Multiple arrests left him homeless, and he struggled to find steady work. Hope seemed distant until he connected with a social worker who introduced him to New Life Center’s Passport Program for homeless veterans.

“ I was hiding from my pain and feeling I had no value.

Through the program, Shawntae began confronting the challenges that once felt insurmountable. He now regularly attends AA meetings and peer support groups, steadily reclaiming his footing.
With support from New Life Center and the Fargo VA, Shawntae is rebuilding his life. While his journey from addiction to recovery is ongoing, he is rediscovering his purpose and the belonging he sought for so long.
“Their support allowed me to address the barriers I’m facing—barriers that I’m not able to overcome on my own.”
Your Giving Hearts Day gift opens the door to healing and hope for men like Shawntae, helping them step into the future they deserve and reminding them that no one is ever too far gone for God's love.
