The Old English Sheepdog has been the
face of the brand for over 60 years, making its first appearance in 1961 and becoming a regular sight on our TV screens. The paint brand and the breed have become synonymous to such an extent that many people, even today, still refer to the Old English Sheepdog as the ‘Dulux dog’.
A dog named Dash Over the years, 15 different dogs have appeared in the adverts, all with a very similar look (mostly white heads), due to
probably the most iconic of them all is the Dulux Old English Sheepdog. The Kennel Club’s Dogs in Advertising exhibition explores how dogs and their associated qualities have been used to advertise a huge variety of products. The exhibition features advertisements and artefacts charting the use of dogs to promote products from the mid-19th century onwards and has a number of Dulux-related exhibits, including a Royal Doulton figure and a door
the carefully managed selection process carried out by the advertising agencies; most of the dogs chosen were successful in the show ring and often had their own chauffeurs. Shepton Daphnis Horsa, bred by Florence Tilley of the famous Shepton kennels and affectionately known as ‘Dash’, was the original Dulux dog. The appearance of Dash in a promotional capacity was supposedly a moment of fate, as he belonged to the advertising director responsible for the first campaign. According to Dulux, the story goes that Dash kept running across the set to play with the child actors, and when it came to editing,
