Here we go again! I can’t believe it’s been a year since we last met, here at Laverstoke Park Farm.
So much has happened in the past 12 months, and I know how challenging life has been for many of you, so I just want to say thank you to all of you for continuing to support the festival and helping us raise millions for our charity partners.
It’s also hard to believe that this will be our 22nd CarFest and, even after 13 years, it gives me, Tash and the kids so much joy and pleasure to be here with you all. I truly believe that this will be an even better and busier CarFest, with our seven festivals all packed with amazing celebrities, experts and activities for the whole family to get involved with and so much for you to enjoy.

to be able to welcome back our charity partners: Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, My Black Dog, Rainbow Trust, Starlight, Teenage Cancer Trust and Young Epilepsy, along with our principal partner, BBC Children in Need, and local Hampshire-based charity Naomi House & Jacksplace, all of whom do incredible work to help young people and their families cope with challenges of illness, hardship and vulnerability.
Please join in the Charity Treasure Trail and meet all our partner charities, and don’t forget to check out the beautiful yellow Porsche 911 and take part in the Text To Win prize draw with BBC Children in Need – it could be yours!
So, get yourself ready for an amazing weekend literally packed to the brim with fun for every single member of the family – make your way around AdventureFest, KidsFest, FoodFest, RetroFest, SpaFest and StarFest, and of course Cars @ CarFest, all sprinkled with lots of magic and loads of celebrity guests!

We ask the presenter and inventor what he has in store for us at CarFest
Which of your creations are you bringing with you to CarFest this year?
Definitely my driving bed ‘Fast Asleep’, but the covers need a wash. ‘Bog Standard’, the driving bathroom, if we can get it back together again after blowing it up! Possibly the ‘Casual Lofa’ sofa car and definitely the ‘Outspan Orange’ we drove down The Mall for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I will also bring a couple of cars from my Workshop Diaries YouTube show: Adam’s 1966 Ford Mustang and John’s no longer rusty Range Rover. That needs a bit of work to get it rolling, so it may just be a pile of parts.
Are you working on any new creations?
If everything has gone to plan, then you will get to see our latest electric ice-cream van based on a 1970s Bedford CF1. It is painted in a very 70s livery of orange metalflake and pearl white, but there is quite a bit of mechanical work to do. After that will be two even trickier projects – to convert an amphibious bus into an electric RV, the ‘Amphibivan’, and get my stainless-steel shopping trolley back on the road. We built it to help promote the Jackass premiere in Leicester Square years ago, and hopefully, I’ll get it done in time for next year’s CarFest!
Which classic car would you most like to get your hands on for a restoration project?
I would love to get my hands on my uncle’s old 4½-litre Bentley, the first car I did 100mph in. It went missing as parts for many years, but I now know it is back together and living in the States.
Rebuilding the futuristic Ed Straker car from the 70s UFO TV series has been on the list for many years, too, although it would be more of a ‘creation’ than a restoration!
Here’s just a taste of the wide range of cars you can see this year at CarFest
■ SUPER-CHARGERS
CarFest presents a selection of ground-breaking, unusual, classic and outrageous examples from the world of electric vehicles.
■ AMERICAN DREAM America, where car culture was born and the automotive tribes unite. Hot-rods, muscle cars, oversized pick-up trucks and outrageous horsepower will be represented this year.
■ CLASSIC ELEGANCE
One thing unites our elegant classics – they don’t build them like they used to. A very special Track Show collection spanning seven decades of elegance and opulence proves you don’t have to sacrifice power for luxury.
Aston Martin and McLaren Automotive are at the vanguard of British design and engineering excellence. From Formula 1 and Le Mans to GT racing and on the road, these vehicles represent the very pinnacle of Britain’s great tradition of bringing advanced racing technologies to exquisite road cars.

Drag Racing is one of the most spectacular, loud and proud forms of auto-racing in the USA and around the world. The principle is simple: accelerate from standstill down a measured ¼-mile straight in the shortest time possible. This year, CarFest is proud to present a selection of drag racers on track and on display. Bring your earplugs – these things are LOUD.
Fun fact: Twenty-four cars were produced to celebrate Mazda’s victory at Le Mans in 1991 and each came with a certificate of authenticity signed by Mazda’s Le Mans race winner Johnny Herbert.
It is 35 years since the Mazda MX-5 was revealed to the world at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show, and what better way to remember this amazing sports car than to have special examples from all four generations on the CarFest Track. The world’s bestselling two-seater roadster, this car was inspired by the affordable rear-drive British sports cars of the 60s and 70s and has always been a favourite with British enthusiasts. We are delighted to help them celebrate.
These cars take the very best elements of the classic car and incorporate modern thinking and technology to sympathetically update them for modern use. A perfect combination of timeless form with modern performance and functionality, restomods are examples of what anyone can achieve with an older donor vehicle, some imagination, patience and a sometimes significant budget. They are a fusion of classic and custom car cultures spanning everything from the sympathetically restored and updated to the heavily modified, yet seemingly original.

■ JAWDROPPERS
Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes and more. These German and Italian supercars compete for your attention with British and Japanese marvels on track and in the paddock.
■ MOTORSPORT MAYHEM
The CarFest Track Show once again proudly presents the slideways artistry of our favourite drift machines, some Jaguar classic tyreshredding and the super-sized shenanigans of a pair of outrageous NASCARs.
■ RUN TO THE SUN
Step back in time to the late 80s/early 90s, a time before BritPop and mega-festivals, when the young and not so young would spend 50 weeks of the year in the garage creating and preparing their Cal-Look custom VWs for the annual pilgrimage to sunny Newquay. Almost 40 years later we celebrate their achievements.

Top speed: 120mph
Engine size: 2,000cc Turbo, 300bhp
Fun fact: Unique car built by Prodrive to compete in the USA rally championship, driven by Mark Lovell to win in 2001.
While our Track Stars need smooth tarmac and lots of safe run-off to perform at their peak, these rally stage heroes don’t! Featuring some ‘Group B’ rallying legends (cars so advanced, untethered and unhinged that they prompted the FIA to ban Group B altogether and create a 2,000cc 300bhp limit for the future top class of rallying) these stage stars will ignite a passion for power.
The humble automobile was essential to the democratisation of personal transport in the early 20th century. In 1900, there were fewer than 700 cars on the roads of Britain; by 1930, this number had grown to over one million. CarFest tips its hat to these pioneers with a collection of 100+ year olds still strutting their stuff on track and looking fabulous in the paddock.

We are delighted to feature the race-track versions of the most relatable and desirable supercars of the modern era – the GT Class endurance cars. We will be joined by teams from British GT and the GT Cup Championship demonstrating the awesome power and staggering durability of race-ready Track Stars from the GT3 and GT4 classes. GT Racing Regulations governing the GT4 class ensure the cars closely resemble their road-going counterparts to control cost and keep these endurance racing monsters relatable.
Featuring representatives from Formula 1, including the incredible 1990 Benetton B190 of Nelson Piquet and the legendary Honda RA108/2 of Jenson Button, plus other classes of the open-wheel racing world, these lightweight, high-powered, aero-equipped speedsters will be joining the CarFest Track Show in a group of their own this year!
Get to know some of the bands and singers performing on the Main Stage
Lead singer and guitarist of The Verve, Richard Ashcroft won an Ivor Novello award for his songwriting and earned the number one spot with The Verve’s debut album. Richard will headline the Main Stage on Friday night and we can’t wait to see the crowd’s reaction when the rock legend comes on stage to perform some of his biggest hits for the CarFest audience.
Emmy and Golden Globe awardwinning actor and producer Damian Lewis OBE and CBE is perhaps best known for TV shows such as Homeland and Band of Brother s but he’s also a passionate musician. He released his first single, Down on the Bowery , in April 2023 and his debut album, Mission Creep , two months later. A second album is on its way soon.
Johnny Marr rose to fame as part of The Smiths and has enjoyed success as a session musician and writing collaborator for artists including Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads and Beck. He’s been a part of various bands and has even contributed to film soundtracks. Johnny released a ‘best of’ album at the end of last year and has recently completed a ten-stop tour around the UK to support the release.
Our Saturday headliner Olly Murs finished runner-up on The X Factor in 2009 and has had an incredible career since. He’s had five UK number one albums and four number one singles, was a coach on The Voice from 2018 to 2023 and has had a successful presenting career. Olly’s crowd-pleasing hits are sure to create fireworks on Saturday night at CarFest!
Jake Shears formed Scissor Sisters in 2001 and their hit singles included Filthy/Gorgeous , Take Your Mama and I Don’t Feel Like Dancin – a number one hit in the UK. Since the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2012, Jake has released his own music, as well as writing with stars such as Kylie, and performing in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots . Jake released his second solo album in June 2023.
Sam started off posting covers of songs on TikTok during the pandemic but became a household name when he represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022 with his song Space Man, coming an incredible second! His first album topped the UK chart and he’s currently working on a second one. Sam’s performances are full of energy and we can’t wait to see him!
BEVERLEY WILL BE PERFORMING ON THE MAIN STAGE ON FRIDAY
We spoke to superstar Beverley about her career in music and theatre
What inspired you to follow a career in music?
I have sung my entire life. I started performing aged four. I cannot remember a time before music. Music is my constant and my life force.
What do you enjoy most about performing at CarFest?
The audiences are always warm and open to hearing all kinds of genres. That makes for a fun time on stage! Chris always likes to hear something a bit different and off the cuff, so you get insane spontaneous collabs, like me and Ricky Wilson with The Feeling singing the Beastie Boys’ (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)
Do you have plans to do any more theatre? Absolutely! I am lucky enough to be able to have a dual career in acting, and as long as there are great stories waiting to be told, I want to be a part of that.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?
Be a decent human being to everyone you meet, always. Your talent will only ever get you so far .
What music do you enjoy listening to?
I don’t have a specific type that I listen to – my taste is a very broad church. Starting with Prince, of course, my idol! Although I do tend to revisit older music, I am always asking, “Who’s that?” when I hear someone new.
“AS LONG AS THERE ARE GREAT STORIES WAITING TO BE TOLD, I WANT TO BE A PART OF THAT”
Pop duo Johnny Hates Jazz released their first single in 1986, so have a long track record of creating great music. Although the band was dissolved in 1992, and following a range of solo projects, they came back together in 2009 and released a new album in 2013, followed by another in 2020. Johnny Hates Jazz are very popular on the festival circuit, so will be sure to get the crowd going on the Sunday night of CarFest.
Scottish pop-rock band Deacon Blue was formed in 1985 and has sold over seven million albums. The band has released 12 singles that have charted in the Top 40 in the UK, as well as two number one albums. After breaking up in 1994, Deacon Blue reunited in 1999 and went on to record six more albums. We’re excited to hear some of their biggest hits at CarFest this year!
Ali Campbell is passionate about Reggae & Dub and has dedicated his musical career to it over the last four decades. In 2007 Campbell released a solo album, Running Free that entered the UK album chart at number 9 and went gold. UB40 ft Ali Campbell weaves fresh musical patterns and we cannot wait to hear which songs they bring for us at CarFest.
Meet some of the top DJs who will be performing at Club CarFest
Crafted by
CarFest regular Max Tyler shot to fame during the pandemic when he’d DJ live on Instagram to keep people entertained. Since then, he’s had several tracks make it into the top 10 and has had a residency at The Shard in London, as well as supporting Gok Wan in Brixton and Example at the British Grand Prix in 2022. Max is ready to thrill the CarFest crowd for another year with his extensive catalogue of music.
DJ Charlie Hedges currently presents Dance Anthems, the UK’s biggest dance show, on Radio 1 on a Saturday afternoon and also hosts the weekday mid-morning show with Melvin Odoom and Rickie Haywood-Williams. So far, she’s released two singles and has performed sets at various clubs and festivals, as well as enjoying residencies in Mallorca and Ibiza. Charlie will be getting the party started on the Friday night of CarFest with the biggest tunes for you to enjoy.
“OUR JOB IS TO GET THE PARTY STARTED AND THE CARFESTERS ARE THE SIXTH MEMBER OF THE BAND”
We chatted to the singer and racing driver about his inspirations
What do you enjoy most about performing?
The energy! We have a saying in this band: “Do every gig as if it’s your last,” and that’s how we play, maximum attack, maximum energy at all times, which I hope comes across!
Which other artists inspire you musically?
We could start with Tom Petty and Prince via any of the 80s hair metal bands (I love them all!) through to current artists like Blossoms. I’m even into synthwave with The Midnight!
What are you looking forward to most about performing at CarFest this year?
Being reunited with the amazing audience who welcomed me and my band from day one. Our job is to get the party started and the CarFesters are the sixth member of the band, so I can’t wait rock out with everyone!
How do you balance music and racing?
Well, racing has taken a back seat due to the
band schedule being so busy – what was originally one year off has now turned into two… And while there are lots of offers to go back into either GTs or BTCC, I realised I can’t do both to the best of my ability, so music has taken priority. But I’m still immensely proud to currently be the only person to have won both British GT4 and GT3 titles outright!
Do you have any plans to compete in more motor racing championships?
Never say never, but I think if I did, it would most probably be in Historics. I’d LOVE to race at the Monaco Historics weekend, but as yet that will have to remain a dream. However, you never know what is around the next corner… or should that be chicane?!
Rick will be performing on The Main Stage on Saturday at 6.15pm, but you’ll also be able to see him driving around the track and also chatting in The EV Cafe over the weekend.
Patrick Nazemi takes his inspiration from a wide range of music. His big personality keeps crowds entertained and he’s currently head resident at Ibiza Rocks, as well as working on creating some of his own music to release. This year, he was the main stage resident DJ at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, and we’re thrilled to be hosting him at CarFest!
The Beatbox Collective have performed around the world and as part of their tours with Young Voices, they have taught over one million people how to beatbox. Their shows combine out-of-this-world sounds as well as physical theatrics. Their performances are full of energy, so they’ll definitely get the crowd going at CarFest.
Celebrity DJ Denise Van Outen plays everything from nostalgic 80s classics to more up-to-date pop hits. Denise has since had a varied career, including acting, singing, presenting on both TV and radio and competing on Dancing on Ice and Strictly Come Dancing . She’s a natural-born entertainer and grabs the crowd’s attention with her upbeat personality and happiness-inducing performances.
Thirteen-year-old DJ Hypester is back at CarFest this year after his surprise performance at last year’s festival. After holding up a sign saying ‘Let Me DJ’, DJ Hypester was invited up on to the stage and thrilled the crowd with his set. Chase & Status described him as a ‘legend in the making’, so we can’t wait to see what he brings this year!
StarFest is a celebration of a world of glitz and glamour, fame and celebrity. StarFest brings together stars who have made it, to share their stories and those who teach, and hope to inspire new generations

If AI blows your mind, then fear no more! The Samsung AI Bus is rolling in to CarFest this weekend to teach everybody about their tablets and the AI being used around the world and in their products.
Take a look around the site at some of the fabulous floral dressings on and around the stages and see if you can spot this Mini. They’ve all been beautifully crafted by our floral partner Prestige Flowers.
The Prestige Team will be in StarFest, running free flower classes for children to choose their flowers and make their own bouquet, plus a chance to take some fun pics with their stunning ‘flowered up’ Mini and VW IDBUZZ!
Be sure to pop in to Prestige to not only meet their amazingly talented florists, but also to learn
more about how these stunning flowers get from flower farm to customers’ doors and how with their sustainability efforts, the flowers are as extraordinary as the lucky recipient they are being delivered to. Be sure to snap up your special gift voucher as well!
MOVE IT, the world’s biggest dance event, is bringing the MOVE IT Dance Academy to StarFest! Whether you just love to dance or you are looking at taking up more formal classes, this is a chance to try out with some of the UK’s best dance teachers. Each day is themed, so you get a taste of different techniques.

Get to know the champion dancer and Strictly’s head judge
VISITORS CAN SEE SHIRLEY ON FRIDAY ON THE STARFEST STAGE
What inspired you to start dancing and did you see it becoming your career?
I was aged seven learning CPR at my Girl Guides, when I heard this music coming from the room next door. I followed the sound and lifted myself up to look through the glass in the door. I saw all these adults twirling and dancing around – to what I now know was the waltz. I said to the gentleman, “Do you do children’s classes?” to which he replied, “Yes, we are starting on Saturday” and since then I fell in love with dance. I remember my mother’s friends saying, “You’re wasting your money,” but I guess my mother saw just how much I loved to dance. She gave her all so I could attend my dance classes.
What do you enjoy most about judging on Strictly Come Dancing ?
I love seeing the celebrities embrace the whole experience, get fully invested in the show and learn a new skill. I’m all about improving each week and when I see that from the celebrities I get all excited in my chair!
What’s the most challenging thing about being a judge?
I’d have to say having the casting vote in the dance-off when my fellow judges aren’t unanimous. I know exactly what it’s like to stand there waiting for a result, so I truly feel
for the couples. Having to end somebody’s journey is extremely tough. But it’s all part of the show and that’s how it works.
You specialised in Latin dance, but which other styles do you enjoy?
I actually started out as a ten dancer, having to do all five Latin and all five ballroom dances, with my first partners Irene Hamilton, David Fleet and Nigel Tiffany. I then competed just in Latin with Sammy Stopford, aged 17, before partnering Corky Ballas in 1984. So I do love returning to ballroom dance from time to time – especially with Anton Du Beke! We dance a little routine every Saturday on the show and it goes down a storm.
Do you plan to write any more books?
Oh, absolutely! I have my second book, Dance to the Death , coming out on 10 October. That one is set at the Royal Albert Hall where the International Championships, one of the biggest events in my industry, are held. And get ready, because it’s even bigger, bolder and there’s even more bitching, bonking and backstabbing. It’s set at Christmas when Lily and Suzie want to have a peaceful time. That’s until they find a dead body…
Shirley Ballas’s first novel Murder on the Dance Floor (HQ, £9.99) is out now.

In 2016, she founded Mental Health Mates, peer-led support groups that encourage people to go for a walk together for their mental health. She also hosts the Mad World podcast, where she discusses a variety of mental health issues with a range of guests.
Adele Parks has written 25 books during her long, successful career as a bestselling author and is one of the UK’s most popular writers of female fiction. Her books include Playing Away, The Other Woman’s Shoes and her most recent novel First Wife’s Shadow. In 2022, she was awarded an MBE for her services to literature.
Lucy Foley has written six novels spanning contemporary fiction, historical fiction and mystery. Two of her books, The Paris Apartment and The Guest List , are New York Times bestsellers. Before becoming an author, Lucy worked as a fiction editor, a literary agent’s assistant, a bookseller and a literary scout, so she clearly has a real passion for reading, which you can hear more about on The Author’s Stage on the Saturday of CarFest.
Formerly a newsreader for BBC News and mum of two, Kate Silverton retrained as a child therapist in 2021, building on her background in child psychology. Her book, There’s No Such Thing As ‘Naughty’ , is aimed at parents with children aged 0-5 and gives advice on how to deal with tantrums, tears and squabbles, while still laying important foundations for good mental health in children.
Jill Halfpenny is best known as an actress, both in theatre and on television, including her role as Kate Mitchell in EastEnders and Rebecca Hopkins in Coronation Street . Jill’s memoir, A Life Reimagined , details the twin tragedies Jill suffered when both her father and then partner died of sudden cardiac events, years apart. In the book, Jill talks about dealing with grief and how society does the same.
Jenny Colgan has written over 40 novels, publishing her first, Amanda’s Wedding , in 2000. Jenny has also written six novels in the Doctor Who series. Her books range from adult romantic fiction to science fiction, and her novel, Welcome to Rosie Hopkins’ Sweetshop of Dreams , won the Romantic Novel of the Year award in 2013. As well as 15 standalone novels, Jenny also has eight series of books, including Summer Seaside Kitchen and Polly .
Buddhist monk Gelong Thubten is a speaker, meditation teacher and author of A Monk’s Guide to Happiness , which is a Sunday Times bestseller, and Handbook for Hard Times , which aims to teach that “happiness, kindness and resilience can be cultivated through embracing life’s difficulties as opportunities for transformation.” He has also collaborated with neuroscientist Ash Ranpura and comedian Ruby Wax to write How to be Human: The Manual , which answers all the questions you have about your body and soul.
We caught up with author and broadcaster Ryan Tubridy, who’s hosting The Author’s Stage and presents the mid-morning show from 10am-1pm every weekday on Virgin Radio
Who have been the biggest influences in your presenting career?
I’ll be accused of bias, but Chris Evans was always a radio hero of mine. He brought – and brings – an energy and a mischief to radio that nobody else can, but he’s also been a great guide and mentor off the air, which has been invaluable. Terry Wogan was an important person, too, as he blazed a trail for lots of Irish broadcasters over the years. Terry made it seem effortless. It wasn’t! Michael Parkinson was the best TV interviewer in the business – his chats were a masterclass for people like me. In Ireland, Gay Byrne and Gerry Ryan were incredibly influential. The key appears to be enjoying life on and off the air and to be authentic.
Do you prefer presenting on radio or on TV?
Radio. I have always answered this question the same way. Having presented on both for over 20 years, I can safely say that radio is more intimate, more friendly and more fun. I love TV, too, but it’s a bit too contrived (and I hate wearing make-up). Radio vs TV is the difference between tea, toast and the crossword and a bungee jump after ten cans of Red Bull. The key here for both is live... recorded radio and TV lacks excitement and danger!
Who are some of your favourite authors?
I love crime writers from around the world such as Ragnar Jónasson (Iceland), Louise Penny (Canada), Liz Nugent (Ireland) and Anthony Horowitz (UK). As a bookworm, I love to be taken to different places by these authors to solve a crime or catch the bad guy. Non-fictionwise, David Grann is tremendous, and if you haven’t read The Wager yet, get busy doing so! Old-school authors I love include Richard Yates, while the quality Irish writers like John Boyne, Paul Lynch et al never let me down.
Do you plan to write any more books?
Between my Virgin Radio show, The Bookshelf podcast and a weekly newspaper column, I’m pretty busy but down the line, I have a dream to write a history book about a particular time in Irish life, more of which anon. It’s a far cry from Dua Lipa!
What are you reading at the moment?
I recently finished Salman Rushdie’s Knife, which was fascinating and gave great insight to a grave story. I’m halfway through a great summer blockbuster of a book by Chris Whitaker, who I had never read, but it’s the perfect book for those long days in the west of Ireland summer (as the rain hits the window and a turf fire burns quietly in the corner).

Laverstoke Park Farm is very excited to host the 13th CarFest festival! Little did we think in 2012, when Chris Evans told us he had an idea to create an event for families with music, cars, food and camping, it would become the incredible festival we enjoy now.
The amazing CarFest team creates a very special weekend and enables the festival to make a huge donation to UK charities that focus on the health and wellbeing of vulnerable young people.
We are truly proud to be a part of this. Thank you for your support and we hope you have an incredible festival – The Scheckter family
Before her tragic and unexpected death, our eldest daughter Ila was thrilled to become a Young Ambassador for this charity. She was determined to spread awareness of epilepsy and seizure support. Ila’s friends have designed T-shirts in her memory that reflect her ‘tumour humour’ and sense of fun and naughtiness, but also convey potentially life-saving skills. Losing control during a seizure is terrifying – cushioning the person’s head, putting them in the recovery position and being supportive help the person feels less unsafe. The T-shirts are available to buy at the Young Epilepsy stand and Laverstoke Park Farm Fun Foodie Workshops ¬– 100% of the £20 price will go to Young Epilepsy.
Join the workshops hosted by Laverstoke Park Farm throughout the day in 30-minute slots. Workshops are first come, first served and are free, but donations are welcome!
Get creative and decorate a car-themed biscuit (gluten free/ vegan/dairy-free options also available) to take away. Thanks to Arla for the organic butter, Doves Farm for the organic flour and Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) for kindly baking over 2,000 biscuits!
The team at Cuisinart will help you make a delicious micro pizza to take away! Stretch your dough and add toppings for a wonderful snack to take with you. Caution: can be hot!

What’s your top tip for someone looking to start cooking Indian food?
Arm yourself with the correct tools, knives and pans. Most people aren’t told this; everyone assumes it’s all about the spices. It is definitely worth keeping your spices in a masala dabba or a spice rack to ensure you’re well organised though.
What inspires you when you’re creating new recipes?
It could be absolutely anything, from talking to my 95-year-old neighbour to visiting a local farmers’ market. Sometimes, random ideas come into my head and I have a hunch that they’ll work.
Why did you decide to be a chef?
My father was a culinary genius. I watched him from an early age and I loved the way he could
put a smile on someone’s face by just offering them a humble meal. From a very young age, I thought I wanted to be able to do that.
What do you enjoy most about running cookery classes?
Passing on knowledge and seeing people’s faces when they realise Indian food isn’t daunting at all.
What’s the key to cooking healthy, tasty Indian food on a budget?
Indian cuisine is one of the cheapest cuisines to create. It’s just getting to understand the range of pulses out there and realising some of the tastiest Indian food is made with the humblest ingredients. Indian food cooked in Indian homes is generally healthy, but for me, what’s important is to have a balanced diet.

“ITALIAN FOOD IS REGIONAL, SEASONAL, SUSTAINABLE AND FRUGAL. EVERYONE EATS WITH THE SAME LOVE AND PASSION FOR THEIR REGION”
We chatted to top chef Theo Randall about his career, his favourite dishes and why he loves Italian cuisine
What’s your favourite dish to make for a family meal?
My aubergine and courgette lasagna. It takes a bit of time to make but it can be made the day before, so you can just pop it in the oven and spend quality time with your family. It’s vegetarian, which is great, as there is always someone who doesn’t eat meat, but everyone loves it, as it is so flavoursome, with the rich tomato, aubergine and courgette base with crispy edges and a rich Parmesan cheese top.
What’s the best career advice you’ve had?
It was from the legendary Alice Waters. I was prepping artichokes with her at her restaurant Chez Panisse and we were chatting about cooking and restaurants, and she turned to me and looked me in the eye and said, “Always trust your instinct” – it may sound obvious, but it is something I do every day.
What’s your favourite comfort food?
A simple pasta like penne or fresh tagliatelle tossed with butter, finely grated Parmesan cheese and freshly ground black pepper.
What career ambitions do you have?
I would like to open more restaurants and continue to write cookbooks. I am on number five with my new book, Verdura.
What do you love about Italian food?
I love Italian food because it is so different in all its 20 regions. Each region always has a unique dish or ingredient that is only made and owned by that specific region. Italian food is regional, seasonal, sustainable and always frugal. This has always been the way and it will continue to be. I love that there is no compromise with food, and everyone eats with the same love and passion for their region.
During lockdown, Big Nath had the chance to become a BBQ chef by perfecting his signature BBQ sauce recipe. In January 2021, Nath and his partner Kinsey opened a dark kitchen in Old Market in Bristol, following a lot of time perfecting recipes. Big Nath’s BBQ can be found regularly at street markets in Bristol and strives to use local produce wherever possible.
Babatunde, also known as Tunde or TJ, was inspired to become a chef as a child growing up in Nigeria, watching his mum cooking. He enjoyed recreating western dishes with whatever they had in the kitchen and hosted Nigerian parties during his time at university in the UK. Wanting to extend his Nigerian food and culture to more people, Tunde set up Suyaman in 2019, which fuses authentic indigenous ingredients with European cooking methods.
Aston Prideaux started cooking during lockdown when his parents bought him a BBQ. He started an Instagram account to document his progress on his BBQ journey and gained a sizeable following. As well as an apprenticeship with Tom Kerridge at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Aston has now appeared at several festivals displaying his skills and we’re excited to welcome him to CarFest.
Chris Mackett started off as sous chef to Tom Kerridge at Adlard’s in Norwich and was then part of the team that opened The Hand and Flowers in Marlow in 2005. Chris then ran his own pub for four years before returning to The Hand and Flowers as a research and development chef. Chris recently stepped away from the restaurant to take time with his family.

The HelpBnk founder talks about his motivations and dreams
What’s your number one piece of advice for someone looking to start a business? Start now. Don’t get bogged down in planning; the best learning happens through action. Embrace failures as opportunities to grow.
How did HelpBnk come about?
HelpBnk was created to provide free support to entrepreneurs, inspired by my desire to give back to my 15-year-old homeless self after selling my business, Fluid. I wanted to build a place where people can get the help they need to follow their dreams.
How would you like to develop HelpBnk in the future?
In the future, we will expand HelpBnk globally, helping ten million people start businesses and building a community so
powerful that we can create a replacement for the education system.
You started your first business aged 15 – what keeps you motivated?
Helping others and making a positive impact. My early experiences taught me resilience and the importance of persistence, motivating me to help others. If you have purpose, you don’t need motivation.
What makes a successful business owner?
Adaptability, resilience, continuous learning and empathy are key. Successful owners have a clear vision, build strong networks and have a desire to create value for others.

As a baby, Joey was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects muscle control. His family was told he would never walk or talk and that he would have a poor quality of life. But Joey found support from a BBC Children in Need project at Steps Conductive Education Centre, which helps children with motor conditions improve their mobility by learning functional skills through fun, play and activities. After pioneering surgery, Steps worked with Joey and his physiotherapist to help him walk by himself for the first time. With more confidence and independence, Joey is looking forward to a much brighter future.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people to live beyond cancer. For many, picking up where they left off before diagnosis isn’t possible. However, through sailing and outdoor activity, they have an improved sense of self-worth, independence and optimism for the future.

Grace, from Paignton in Devon, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma, aged six. Her carefree childhood was abruptly replaced with hospital visits for intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, causing her to miss school and sports while enduring distressing side effects, leaving her anxious about the future.
Sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust played a vital role in Grace’s recovery. The trips offered a supportive community who shared similar challenges, providing a secure environment for her to gain independence and form meaningful friendships. This benefited Grace and also allowed her parents to release the protective cocoon she’d been wrapped in, letting her rediscover the joys of childhood.

As a child, Sfiyah developed a debilitating knee inflammation, limiting her ability to walk. She was referred to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Wales, where they learnt that she had Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. The constant pain and time in hospital became emotionally draining, and was far from a normal childhood.
It was only once she was referred to John, the hospital’s Play Therapist, that Sfiyah’s family saw her behaving like her old self again.
Her mother, Parvina, said of the support of both Starlight Children’s Foundation and John, “Sfiyah’s mood changed after her first visit with him. It was a relief to see her smile after a long time, as she had been through so much.”
Sfiyah has nominated John for Health Play Specialist of the Year for the joy he and Starlight have helped provide.

Brother and sister Cash and Darla love football, surfing and camping and both live with epilepsy. Cash had his first seizure when he was 5, but it took another 3 years to get his diagnosis of focal epilepsy. Darla has also since received a focal epilepsy diagnosis, much quicker than her brother as her family came to understand the lesser-known signs of this type of epilepsy. Epilepsy can affect everyone differently and there are over 40 different types of seizure. Now Cash and his family campaign with Young Epilepsy for more understanding of the condition in all areas of childhood.
All money raised goes to help support the more than 100,000 children and young people living in the UK with epilepsy.
Rock up and design T-shirts for all the family! We will also have a lotto, games for the kids, including giant Connect 4 and Jenga, a Lego table and crafts! Come and see us in FoodFest.
My Black Dog is a peer-to-peer support service for people struggling with their mental health. All of our volunteers have had their own battles with mental health and understand what you are going through. Talking about your mental health is hard. Perhaps you think “it’s not that serious” or “I’m fine”. Some people can’t open up to friends and family because they don’t want to hurt them, or burden them, sometimes they are scared of being judged. Every person involved in our charity has been through debilitating mental health and have managed to find the light at the end of the tunnel. My Black Dog: When you don’t know who to talk to, talk to someone who gets it.
As part of our stall this year we will have the supplies to build a dog, available for a donation. Each of these dogs are 16in and incredibly soft!
Money raised by CarFest will provide funding for My Black Dog support services via its online chat system.
Dom is a married 53-year-old with four children, two dogs and a kitten. He has struggled with mental health for many years. In 2017, he was diagnosed with depression. Although there was some improvement initially, his progress was hindered by daily drinking over Christmas 2017, which nullified the effects of his medication.
In January 2018, he attempted suicide with sleeping tablets and alcohol, fortunately being found in time to receive medical attention. Dom chose to admit himself into a mental health ward. Since then, he has embarked on a journey of self-discovery, recognising the importance of openness about mental health and the willingness of others to offer support and now volunteers for My Black Dog.
Naomi House & Jacksplace are hospices for life-limited and life-threatened children, young adults and their families, providing vital respite, end-of-life care and bereavement support. Follow us on social media @naomiandjack or visit our website naomihouse.org.uk
Your support helps Naomi House & Jacksplace provide outstanding care for local families across the south coast on good days, difficult days and last days.
Meet Josh, Ebony and Jamie, who all regularly visit Jacksplace, our hospice for young adults. Josh and Jamie have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle-wasting condition affecting every muscle in the body, including the heart. Their condition means they have lost the ability to walk, and as time goes on, they will get weaker and need more support. Ebony has Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT), a neurological disorder that affects the parts of the brain that control motor skills and speech. It is a life-limiting condition. They all enjoy coming to Jacksplace to spend time with their friends, relax, take part in activities together, swim in the hydrotherapy pool and go out on trips. Ebony says: “Jacksplace is basically a home from home.”
Come and play at our Naomi House & Jacksplace Sensory Zone in SpaFest, designed by our Play Team. There’ll be a chillout area with lights, music, sensory toys and crafts!
