Dear New Beginnings Moravian Church members & friends:

Have you heard the news?

As you are aware, over the past 15 months, your Pastor Selection Team has been engaged in finding a permanent Pastor for our congregation. Our approach has been to be careful and intentional about selecting a Pastor who would not only align with the Congregational Survey, but help New Beginnings as it listens to and acts upon God’s calling. We appreciate your prayers and support for us, and your patience during this time. Your Pastor Selection Team is VERY pleased to announce that, at the board’s request, the Provincial Elders’ Conference has extended a call that has been accepted by the Rev. Russell Williams. Russ grew up in the Trinity Moravian congregation in Winston-Salem, graduated from Appalachian State University and received the Master of Divinity degree from Moravian Theological Seminary. He was ordained a Deacon in 2010 and consecrated a Presbyter in 2015. He has served the Moravian congregation in Oak Ridge, NC, and is currently Pastor of the Union Cross congregation in Winston-Salem. In addition to congregational ministry, Rev. Williams, has been active in the Moravian Ministry Association, the 2014 Synod Planning Committee, and the summer programs at Laurel Ridge Camp and Conference Center. Rev. Williams will conclude his ministry at Union Cross Moravian Church on July 7 and begin with us here at New Beginnings on July 31. A service of installation is being planned for Sunday, August 11. We are excited that Rev. Williams has accepted the call, and we look forward to welcoming him here at NBMC. We ask that you join with us in preparing to welcome Russ as our Pastor. However, this transition also brings a sadness, but joy, as Rev. Bob and Sarah move on to their next journey in Christ. Pastor Bob has truly been a gift from God as he shepherded NBMC through this time. Words cannot express our gratitude for the service Pastor Bob has given and the friendship he has shown to our congregation. We look forward to and will cherish his time with us during this transition. We invite you to pray for Russ, his wife, Jessica, and their sons, James Wade, Philip, and Luke; for the Union Cross congregation; for Bob, and for our congregation during this time of transition and new beginnings. Your Leadership Team appreciates your support as we continue to seek God’s guidance and counsel in the work of New Beginnings Moravian Church. Thank you! Your Pastor Selection Team

June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month Traumatic events-such as an accident, assault, military combat or natural disaster- can have lasting effects on a person’s mental health. While many people will have short term responses to life-threatening events, some will develop longer term symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD symptoms often co-exist with other conditions such as substance use disorders, depression, and anxiety. A comprehensive medical evaluation resulting in an individualized treatment plan is optimal. PTSD affects 3.5% of the U.S. adult population-about 8 million Americans. About 37% of those diagnosed with PTSD are classified as having severe symptoms. And women have higher rates than men. Young children can also develop PTSD, and the symptoms are different from those of adults. Young children lack the ability to convey some aspects of their experience. A diagnosis of PTSD requires a discussion with a trained professional. Symptoms of PTSD may include: nightmares or unwanted memories of the trauma, avoidance of situations that bring back memories of the trauma, heightened reactions, anxiety or depressed mood. Children’s behavior is often a better clue than words, and developmental achievements in an impacted child might slip back( e.g. reversion to not being toilet trained in a 4 year old.) Whether you think of these symptoms as a stress response variant or PTSD, they can be considered one’s inability to effectively return to “normal” in the months after its extraordinary response to a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD usually begin within three months after experiencing or being expose to a traumatic event. Occasionally, symptoms may emerge years afterward. For a diagnosis of PTSD, symptoms must last more than one month. Though PTSD cannot be cured, it can be treated and managed in several ways. Treatment can involve medication, therapy, or a combination of both. Also learning self-management strategies i.e. mindfulness are helpful to ground a person and bring one back to reality after a flashback. Service animals, can help soothe some of the symptoms of the PTSD. Practicing good mental health and stress reduction habits can minimize the onset of intensity of PTSD.
