Titus 3:4-7 4But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. In his council Paul urged people of his day to rethink the Christ Child event, the event that we have just celebrated together. And what better way to describe the event of Christmas then and now than the Words Paul uses in Chapter 3, beginning with vs. 4 when he describes the most awesome occurrence in the history of mankind as the appearance of the goodness and kindness of God. Not because they had earned it, but because at the center of God’s action of grace is love. Love for all of them. Love for all of His creation. And Love for all of us. It is an attitude if adopted that makes it easy for people to see the Spirit of God in one’s life. This Spirit if claimed informs all of our actions so that we may truly be a blessing to others. My prayer for all of us as we begin another year together is that we may rediscover this call no matter how well individually we think we have it together or how deeply immersed in trouble we feel. It’s about people who came together to rediscover their priorities and to the Lord to carry His message of grace to a hurting world. It is about not missing the “Big News” of God’s love! It is about the God of mercy putting himself at our mercy. May God’s grace become even more apparent in your life and that we continue to give each other the greatest gift of all, God’s love, God’s mercy, and ultimately God’s hope! In His presence, pC Thank you to everyone who attended the 1st organizational meeting for VBS 2014. This year’s theme will be “Come Worship with Me” and we’ll be asking for your input re: the week and times this summer that work best. ANOTHER REASON TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT USING ANTIBIOTICS WHAT IS CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE? – (CDIFF) C. difficile is a very common bacterium (a germ that may cause disease) that can live in the human gut. Some people have it without having any symptoms, but in others it can cause illness ranging from mild diarrhea to severe colitis (infection of the colon). In some cases, C. difficile infection results in death. C. difficile spores (seeds that can grow into the active bacteria under the right conditions) can live outside the body for long periods of time, on all kinds of surfaces, and can be easily spread from patient to patient in hospitals and nursing homes. Therefore, hospital patients and nursing home residents are at higher risk for C. difficile infection because of the increased chance of exposure. How does C. difficile cause colitis? C. difficile spores lie dormant inside the colon until a person takes an antibiotic. The antibiotic disrupts the other bacteria that normally are living in the colon and preventing C. difficile from transforming into its active, disease causing bacterial form. As a result, C. difficile transforms into its infectious form and then produces toxins (chemicals) that inflame and damage the colon. The inflammation results in an influx of white blood cells to the colon. The severity of the colitis can vary. In the more severe cases, the toxins kill the tissue of the inner lining of the colon, and the tissue falls off. The tissue that falls off is mixed with white blood cells (pus) and gives the appearance of a white, membranous patch covering the inner lining of the colon. This severe form of C. difficile colitis is called pseudomembranous colitis because the patches appear like membranes, but they are not true membranes. Not everybody infected with C. difficile develops colitis. Many infants and young children, and even some adults, are carriers (they are infected but have no symptoms) of C. difficile. It does not cause colitis in these people probably because: the bacteria stay in the colon as non-active spores, and the individuals have developed antibodies that protect them against the C. difficile toxins. Staying in a health care facility The majority of C. difficile cases occur in, or after exposure to, health care settings — including hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities — where germs spread easily, antibiotic use is common and people are especially vulnerable to infection. In hospitals and nursing homes, C. difficile spreads mainly on hands from person to person, but also on cart handles, bedrails, bedside tables, toilets, sinks, stethoscopes, thermometers — even telephones and remote controls. Having a serious illness or medical procedure If you have a serious illness, such as inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer, or a weakened immune system as a result of a medical condition or treatment (such as chemotherapy), you're more susceptible to a C. difficile infection. Your risk of C. difficile infection is also greater if you've had abdominal surgery or a gastrointestinal procedure. Older age is also a risk factor for C. difficile infection. In one study, the risk of becoming infected with C. difficile was 10 times greater for people age 65 and older compared with younger people. After having a previous C. difficile infection, your chances of having a recurring infection can be up to 20 percent, and the risk increases further with every subsequent infection. In many hospitals there will be a Blue Isolation Kit on the door. If you are visiting a family member or friend with CDiff be sure to follow appropriate gowning procedures. submitted by Dick Gardner

The Bible doesn’t mention making resolutions, but it does urge us to examine our lives regularly, and to seek God’s help to become better persons every day. The Bible says: “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.” (Lam. 3:40) —Billy Graham

Ask yourself these questions: After our worship service, Do you… • Help your child make their plate? • Enjoy a piece of cake, dip and crackers, chips, and quenching your thirst? • Enjoy visiting with your church family? • Catch up on news around the church? • Take the time to read the Health Board? • Check out what sign-up sheets are waiting for your signature? • Visit with your child’s SS teacher? • Touch base with other parents for that much-needed support? If you answered YES, to one or more of these questions, why not volunteer to provide refreshments for our fellowship time? Every Sunday, the line of folks “enjoying the fruits” of someone else’s labor backs into the sanctuary. We could use a few more of you to help with this delicious ministry…. The more folks who sign-up, the fewer times you’ll need to do it.

When you come to church, on any given day, but especially for Sunday worship, do you notice that: • your arms don’t stick to the table in the fellowship hall during Bible Study? • the Toilet paper roll isn’t empty in the ladies’ room? • the Trash cans have been emptied? • The sanctuary lights reflect beautifully off the grand piano? • Our communion table is clean and streak-free? • The candle votives are wax-free? • The sanctuary carpeting is lint-free? • The Nursery rug has been vacuumed in anticipation of your little one? • Paper towels are waiting for you in the bathroom and the kitchen? • The pew seats have been vacuumed? • Nursery toys have been disinfected? • The kitchen has been tidied up? If you answered YES to one or more of these, please consider joining one of our cleaning teams!! for the past 3 years, fewer than 8 people have been keeping it clean on a weekly basis. It would be wonderful to “share the load” — you pick the day and time that fits your schedule best during your scheduled week! 2014 volunteer schedules are being assembled now — prayerfully consider joining one, or both of these ministries & email the church office at newbeginnings100@bellsouth.net if you’d like to be added to the rotation. Thank you.
