Dear Friends,
I have to admit, the source of inspiration for this month’s letter is again, social media. I have been writing this letter for quite some time. Inspiration usually comes to me from conversations with members, interactions with peers and staff, or sometimes just the state of affairs here at the Center.
A brief video I saw recently talked about the age of “liberation”. The gentleman was from a website called Growing Bolder. Two points really spoke to me. The first: Aging is a great excuse to not do anything that we don’t want to do. And second: It is also a great reason to do anything that we want to do – liberation.
Aging can be a great excuse. Look around the Center however and observe some truly great examples of those who have chosen not to use it as an excuse. These participants keep moving, try new things, they stay socially connected. How hard is it to stay home, sit in the same chair, watch tv all day and basically disengage from society? Unfortunately, it is not hard at all! Our members choose to get out there, stay active, stay engaged, stay connected.
Aging is also a great reason to try anything. Sometimes when we were younger, we tried to be the best, the fastest, the strongest – many activities became very competitive. This applied to all areas; I recall not being happy unless I was “first chair” or had the highest scores. As we age, the sheer joy of participation is sometimes enough. We no longer feel that we have to climb the highest mountain, but maybe taking the scenic route brings just as much pleasure. The Greater Newark Area provides many opportunities to pursue diverse areas of interest, get involved and remain engaged.
The age of liberation may just be the best age for many. I see members truly enjoying their day. They enter with a smile, chatting and checking in with friends and acquaintances. Some return to activities they have done for years. Some try new things and connect with others in a way that would not have been possible in younger years.
Each day truly is a gift – and maybe a time to experience the joy that comes with the feeling of liberation.

Construction Update
We expect construction to be completed by the end of the year. This expansion will provide additional flexible space that will be used for exercise, enrichment, socials and lunch. We look forward to completing this project and having additional space for the wide array of programs offered here. We also look forward to continuing to serve the growing demand for our Meeting of Minds program. The west entrance and the Meeting of Minds patio entrance will not be accessible for much of the construction project.
Kate's Fitness Korner
by Kate Boe ger, NSC Fitness Center ManagerOatmeal is a great way to get a good serving of nutrients like iron, vitamin B and zinc, while providing you with enough carbs and fiber to wake you up and keep you full until lunch! My personal favorite way to eat oatmeal is by making overnight oats because of how simple it is to throw together and it’s great for a grab and go breakfast. What are the steps? Simply mix together old-fashioned oats and any kind of milk in a 1 to 2 ratio and add sweeteners, salt and any other addins to your liking. For one serving, start with ¼ cup of oats and ½ cup milk. Have the oats soak overnight and by the time you wake up, you’ll have a nutritious and delicious breakfast! What should you add in? ANYTHING. Dried or fresh fruit adds a healthy bit of color and natural sweetness while a spoonful of nut butter can add some healthy fats and protein for a boost in the morning. My go-to is some fresh, cut-up strawberries and bananas, shelled sunflower seeds with a spoon of greek yogurt for a creamy and crunchy strawberry banana delight!

INTRODUCTION TO WINTERTHUR MUSEUM, GARDEN & LIBRARY - WITH AN EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHT
Wednesday, September 27th 9:30am
Presenters: Josh Horowitz & Tyler Johnson Museum Interpreters at Winterthur
You are invited on an exploration of Winterthur Museum, Garden &Library in Winterthur, Delaware. Founded by Henry Francis du Pont, Winterthur (pronounced “winter-tour”) is the premier collection of American decorative arts, reflecting both early America and the du Pont family’s life. The estate is 1,000 acres of rolling hills, meadows, and woodlands, with a naturalistic garden and research library that welcomes scholars and students of horticulture, history, material culture, society, and more. As a highlight, you will see the replica of the famous wedding dress designer Ann Lowe created for Jacqueline Kennedy, which is featured in the exhibition, Ann Lowe: American Couturier. No Cost, please register at the Reception Desk.
About the Presenters: History has always felt alive to Josh Horowitz. While some places are historically important to many, Josh particularly loves the everyday spaces that people uniquely build their lives around. As a Museum Interpreter at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, he nurtures this passion across many disciplines, within the current landscape and natural beauty of the estate, the historic architecture, and museum collection of art and artifacts. Josh received a B.A. in History with minors in Anthropology and Classical and Mediterranean studies from Penn State University, and has worked Interpreter at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, PA. Josh is continually pursuing new research, while learning and sharing.
Tyler Johnson (he/him) has been a Museum Interpreter for six years, where he engages and inspires visitors with compelling stories on broad themes in history, horticulture, and society, as well as the Winterthur Story and understanding of the museum collection. Tyler has a B.A. in World History from Wester Chester University. If there is a historical topic that generates fun and meaningful conversation, Tyler delights in the discussion.

Yoga is one of the best ways to keep yourself feeling lively and healthy as you age! Slow and gentle yoga with a holistic approach that focuses on strength, balance, flexibility, bringing mobility to the joints and breath control. Poses, when practiced regularly, will contribute to improvement of physical strength, mental clarity and the cognitive connection to both. We will be doing standing poses and poses on the floor. Remember to bring your mat.

Meals On Wheels A Community Effort
The Meals on Wheels Program has always been a cornerstone of the Newark Senior Center. Delivering hot, freshly prepared meals to homebound seniors has always been a priority. When COVID forced the NSC to close, Meals on Wheels became an essential service. The demand for meals increased 63% from the previous year.
We have been delivering an average of 230 meals per day including bagged suppers since March 2020 and it has truly been a community effort. The food services staff have become essential employees, and our pool of volunteers has grown as people working from home have wanted to help their community.
The success of the MOW program hinges on many factors including; the dedication of the NSC staff, the large pool of volunteers, and the financial support from our community.

INSURANCE CAUTION
If you are on Medicare and have a Medicare Supplement, you can ignore signs in a doctor’s offices saying “This office does not accept [company name] insurance. Your bill is submitted to Medicare and then Medicare forwards the bill to your Medicare Supplement Plan for coverage. Depending on the type of Medicare Supplement you have, you may be responsible for annual deductible (Plan G) or the deductible plus there may be a $20 copay per visit or if the provider elects to charge 15% more than the Medicare approved amount, you could be responsible for that as well (Plan N). If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you may be required to use plan doctors and/or to obtain preapproval. Marketplace or employer insurance can have similar limitations. In those instances, you have to make sure that your insurance covers services by each provider that you deal with.”.
PLEASE verify that your insurance will be accepted for the entire cost of your treatment.
Please reach out to Anika Turner, our Social Services Director with any questions. We also have a Medicare counselor available for questions. Anika can schedule an appointment for you. 302-737-2336 x112
