Dear Friends,

The Newark Senior Center is and always has been guided by our mission. We have several goals that support that mission. One of our goals is to offer programs that are consistently responsive to the needs and interests of members and their families.

In 2015, the NSC developed a new program that was named Meeting of Minds. Meeting of Minds is a guided group experience for those in the early stages of memory loss. Before beginning this program, staff researched other similar programs. These programs were very popular and common in Florida but there was only one other such program in the state of Delaware. The Brookdale Foundation provided resources that served as the foundation for our program. Meeting of Minds is an extension of senior center programming that benefits the participant as well as providing respite for family caregivers.

Meeting of Minds began with 8 people in the lounge in 2015. It then grew to about 15 people in the Activity classroom. When the opportunity came up in 2018, we were able to renovate the Adult Day Care space. As the program continued to grow, the most recent expansion to the Center included additional space for Meeting of Minds. It is our goal to continue to serve more families in our newly expanded space. We are very grateful to our volunteers who make this program such a wonderful experience for our participants. Although Meeting of Minds serves those in the early stages of memory loss, all that we do supports mental, social, physical and emotional wellbeing. There is a real overlap in the benefits of participating in activities at the NSC. The program staff is always trying to improve offerings. Please look for new opportunities in the coming months including a collaboration with the University of Delaware’s Center for Cognitive Aging Research.

Thank you to all of our members for providing a welcoming center. From July through January, we have welcomed 456 new members to the NSC community. There really is something for everyone!

NSC TRANSPORTATION

Bus service available Monday - Friday

Cost: $2/day

• Participants who would like to use the Newark Senior Center transportation system must register for a ride at least 24 hours in advance.

• Registration is available online at www.newarkseniorcenter.com, by phone at 302-737-2336 or in person at the Reception Desk. Do not leave a voice message for a bus reservation or a cancellation.

• Payment ($2/day) must be made at the time of the reservation. NSC accepts major credit cards, cash or check (in person).

• Cancellations must be made by 2pm the day before your ride in order to receive a credit.

REMINDER FOR NSC BUS RIDERS

In order to receive credit for cancelling a NSC Bus Ride, you must speak with an NSC Staff member before 2pm the day before the ride you wish to cancel. CREDITS WILL NOT BE ISSUED FOR MISSED RIDES OR RIDES CANCELLED AFTER 2PM THE DAY BEFORE. VOICEMAILS DO NOT COUNT.

Online registration is now available in the NSC Member Portal for membership renewals and registration for programs, NSC Bus transportation and the travel program. Monthly Fitness Access needs to be done at the Reception Desk. To register for the online portal go to newarkseniorcenter.com and click on NSC Member Portal and follow the instructions there. You must have a current NSC membership to access the Member Portal.

Join Veronica as she shares her experience as a nurse working and living aboard a WWII/Korean conflict ship, the SS HOPE hospital ship on their voyage to Jamaica, West Indies. Bringing healthcare to the newly independent nation of Jamaica in 1971 entaled creating a collaborative cultural environment in which untreated and unhealthy conditions could be updated through education and care practices by a team of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, nutritionists and clinical laboratory technologists.

Join Dr, Saleem Khan as he discussses his book, "Against the Odds, A Story of Courage, Faith and Resolve." This book is about his beloved dad's incredible life. Growing up in British India he faced discrimination, humiliation and poverty. He dealt with all of these challenges with courage, faith and resolve and became a hero from zero.

FEE INCREASES

DUES – The NSC has not had an annual membership dues increase since 2017. Beginning July 2024 dues will increase to $35 per year. Lifetime membership will remain at $300.

BUS FEES – The bus fee has not increased for more than 20 years. Beginning July 2024, the fee will go from $2 per day to $4 per day. If this is a hardship, please see Anika Turner, our Social Services Director who will evaluate your eligibility for a scholarship.

MEETING OF MINDS – Meeting of Minds has not had a fee increase since 2018. Beginning July 2024, the fee will increase from $32 to $35 per day. If this is a hardship, please see Laura Greene, Early Memory Loss Coordinator, who will evaluate your eligibility for a scholarship.

HEARING LOOP NOW AVAILABLE AT THE NSC. Please check with your hearing specialist to see if your hearing aid is equipped with an enabled t-coil. The hearing loop sends pure clear sound directly from the sound system to your hearing aid. The hearing loop is available in the center section of the Evergreen room and in Classroom 1.

A Guided Group Experience for those with early stages of dementia or memory loss

An active, social and educational program for adults who are in the early stages of dementia, Alzheimer’s or any other cognitive impairments. Caregivers receive some respite time, knowing that their loved ones are in a positive & safe environment.

COMFORT PILLOW GROUP

This group is for those who enjoy bringing comfort to others. No experience necessary. We will be hand stuffing 9x14 inch pillow cases and hand sewing them shut, These pillows are given free of charge, to anyone who many need or want one. They are also donated to nursing homes, hospice, children’s organizations, etc. If you have cotton, fabric and/or polyfill to donate, please contact Debbie Ott

Group's emphasis is on producing donations to various community groups. Members are welcome to work on their own projects, share pattern ideas, or attend to learn new skills. MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERY

We are looking for regular or substitute drivers for several routes in the greater Newark area! Meals are delivered Monday through Friday and can be picked up between 10:30am-11am. Each route takes about 90 minutes of your time. YOU can become a Meals on Wheels volunteer if you have a valid license, insured vehicle, and pass a background check. NSC delivers an average of 150 hot meals each day plus bagged suppers to homebound clients in the greater Newark area. YOU can help seniors continue to live independently in the community by delivering a healthy meal and friendly smile. Please, contact Maura Jongebreur for more information: 737-5747. GIFT SHOPPE VOLUNTEER

Volunteers handle sales of handmade consigned items. Volunteers are asked to work once or twice a month, 10 - 1. Stop in the shoppe to leave your name and number! Training provided.

MEETING OF MINDS PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for individuals to assist in our Meeting of Minds Program. Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 weekday/week from 9:30AM-2:15PM. As a volunteer for Meeting of Minds you can be a cheerleader, companion, and advocate! Volunteer responsibilities include assisting members with activities, creating a relaxing environment, and lunch set-up. RECEPTION DESK

We are seeking upbeat individuals with experience with computers and customer service to work at the NSC Reception Desk! Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one shift every other week. Shifts are weekdays from 9am – 12Noon or 12Noon3pm. Volunteers are responsible for giving tours of the Center, answering the phones, and using the computer to register people for memberships, activities, and classes. TRAVEL

• Please sign up for trips as soon as possible and at least 40 days prior to the trip. Payments to the bus company and destinations are due & trips will be cancelled due to lack of registrations.

• You can register for trips in person or by phone, Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 3:00pm

• New trips cannot be registered for until the 1st of the month

• All trips depart from the North Entrance and are rain or shine

• Cancellation Forms are located at the Reception Desk & must be completed for ALL cancelled trips. Refunds will not be given for cancellations unless the seat can be resold. For trips costing less than $15 and ALL JITNEYS, refunds will be issued in the form of credits.

• Phone numbers & emergency contact information are required for all trip participants.

• Individuals requiring assistance – NSC offers a wheel-chair lift for Jitney Jaunts only – please notify Receptionist when you make your reservation. Individuals requiring assistance to meet basic needs must travel with a companion. A reservation must be purchased for the companion to ensure seating.

• Payment in full is due at the time of registration. Phone reservations require credit card payment.

• Please arrive 15 minutes before the published departure time.

JITNEY JAUNTS

• Jitney Jaunts are local trips using the NSC bus & are limited to 16 passengers (12 person minimum). There are no tour guides on these trips.

• When dining as a group, please keep in mind that some establishments will include a gratuity of up to 18%. Every effort is made to provide individual checks, but some restaurants cannot accommodate this request. If this is the case, checks will be provided for tables of 4.

• Jitney Jaunts are for NSC Members only. All Jitneys leave & return to the Center. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Center.

Enjoy motorcoach transportation to meet our step-on tour guide at Dorchester County Visitor Center in Cambridge, MD who will narrate throughout the day. Travel through Bucktown before we arrive to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center to see how the region shaped Harriet’s early years and discuss her work as a freedom leader. On the way to lunch we will travel through the Woolford/Madison area, where Harriet was born, and worked alongside her father around Parsons Creek. We’ll enjoy lunch at Old Salty's Restaurant on Hoopers Island for a buffet-style meal (1 crab cake per person, fish, clams strips, chicken, veggies, tea/coffee/water and slice of homemade pie). We are a group of Senior Center members who like to help other seniors learn about technology. We are not a techie group, just volunteers who enjoy learning new things and helping others learn. We have over 200 members with varying levels of technology experience, many of whom are eager to help others.

WHAT WE DO

We train you on the use of lab resources, including document, photo and slide scanning; converting different types of video to a DVD or digital format. We also help with problems on devices (computer, tablet, camera, smartphone).

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer programs and classes for all levels of experience. Monday afternoon labs for club members offer oneon-one help with a more experienced club member. Thursday afternoon programs offer a variety of speakers on the latest technology. We also offer open lab sessions for Senior Center members on Mondays and Tuesdays.

HOW TO JOIN

You must be a member of the Newark Senior Center to become a member of the Technology Club. Stop by the computer lab when it is open and someone will provide you a brochure listing all the benefits and offer a membership form to complete. After you join, you will be offered classes, free instruction and free advice for your devices. You will also have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. About 40% of cases of dementia could be delayed or prevented by reducing modifiable risk factors and living a brain-healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, there is a lot of "snake oil" marketed to older adults and it is difficult to discern what is backed by scientific evidence. Furthermore, changing health behaviors is difficult and requires counseling and support. The Brain Wellness Information, Support, and Empowerment (Brain-WISE) program is a 6-session, group-based workshop, run by UD faculty, clinicians, and students, to teach people about brain health and help them make a plan to improve and sustain brain health in aging. Qigong (pronounced "chee gung") is an ancient Chinese exercise that combines easy to follow movements with mental focus and breath.
