January 2024

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! We are off to an exciting start as we begin to use the newly expanded spaces at the Newark Senior Center. The “Patio” will begin serving many of our exercise participants as well as other activities and community groups. The Evergreen room will provide a much more welcoming space for our members enjoying each other’s company as well as a wonderful lunch prepared by our Food Service Staff. We have not been able to use the larger space in the Evergreen room for dining since 2020. Please plan to join us for lunch and sit and visit with friends. When the NSC was built in 1996, there was a clear understanding of the importance of physical activity space as well as space for socialization. We continue to recognize the importance of the Center as a community hub and gathering space. Of course, the new year is always a time for new beginnings, sometimes resolutions, possibly just trying to do better each day. In November 2022, the NSC introduced the Fitness Access Pass, just $30 per month. This pass allows access to the therapeutic pool, the fitness center, and the instructed exercise classes. Believe it or not, there are more than 140 exercise options available each month. I am challenging myself, and also you, to take advantage of the amazing array of options at the Center.

One of the goals of the Center is to provide a safe and accessible facility. Winter brings on a new set of challenges as we try to stay ahead of the weather. Please be aware and alert that there may be patches of ice or snow as we make our way through the season. We do our best but mother nature can present some challenges. Winter is also a great reminder of the risk of falling and the benefit of maintaining strength and balance. Exercise opportunities and simply walking throughout the safe common spaces of the Center can improve mobility. The new year and the holiday season often provide opportunities to reconnect with friends and family. Maura, our newest staff person, works very hard to present social opportunities throughout the year. Please take a look at the newsletter to learn more about upcoming socials. These socials are a great way to spend time with friends and have fun. Have a wonderful, happy, healthy and safe New Year!

Health Insurance Caution Please ask all medical providers if they accept your insurance – private insurance or Medicare, and if all costs of your care will be covered under insurance. They may ask for your insurance information but that is not a guarantee that your procedure/ treatment will be fully covered. Please see page 42 for more information.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Kate's Fitness Korner

by Kate Boettger, NSC Fitness Center Manager It is bittersweet to write this, but this will be the last installment of Kate’s Korner. I have decided to move positions within CardioKinetics to manage the fitness center at Delaware Technical Community College’s Stanton campus. I would like to thank all of the senior center members, both inside and outside of the fitness center, as well as the staff for welcoming me with open arms the last two and a half years and for helping me grow professionally and personally. I will always look back at my time here fondly and will truly miss all of you.

Q&A

with Carla Grygiel, Executive Director Wednesday, January 17th 11:00am Do you have questions about NSC? Program offerings? How things run? This is your chance to ask Carla! Open to new members and long-time members. No Cost

No Registration

Taking over my role will be Jada Hall, who has been my intern for the past few months. She is a recent graduate of Lebanon Valley College’s Clinical Exercise Physiology masters program and is very excited to step into this role! I have no doubt that Jada will do a fantastic job and that you all will have a great time with her in the fitness center. If you have any questions or would like to get to know our new fitness center manager better, feel free to stop by the fitness center! I hope you all enjoy having Jada as much as I enjoyed having her as my intern, and make sure you look out for her take on Kate’s Korner, Jada’s Journal, in the next newsletter.
