Dear Friends,
April is upon us! Spring – a time of rebirth, renewal, for many a welcome respite from the long dark days of winter. April at the NSC also brings many opportunities. The Spring Sale offers a way to connect, to get involved, to give back to the Center. Our dedicated volunteers work so hard to assist with this important fundraiser for the Center.
Volunteers are a critical component of what makes the NSC such a valuable community resource. Starting at the top, our Board of Directors contributes many hours to guide this organization. The group brings a wealth of professional experience to ensure proper guidance and oversight for the operations of the Center. The current Board of Directors is one of the most active, not only with the work of the Board and the committees, but also their involvement in volunteering in other areas of the Center. The Board members help with Meals on Wheels and the Front Desk, they are also actively involved in Center programming as leaders and participants. This level of involvement provides valuable insight as they work to guide the operations of the Center.
In the spirit of spring – or spring cleaning, the spring sale provides the perfect opportunity to look around your home. Please consider donating new or gently used items for our sale. In recent years, the sale of donated goods has allowed the Center to raise about $30,000 to support operations. We are so grateful to receive donations from so many in our community, we welcome all volunteers and of course we are thrilled to see the crowds of shoppers that enjoy the treasure hunt!
SCHEDULE UPDATE
There will be no classes/programs Tuesday, April 23rd - Friday, April 26th as we set up & hold the Spring Sale. During these days, the pool & Fitness Center will be open as scheduled. Meeting of Minds will run on a normal schedule. The NSC Busses will ONLY pick up Meeting of Minds clients on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of that week. Thank you for your cooperation & support of this important fundraiser!
Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.

Sit & Stitch Year in Review
Each month, knitters gather in the Activity Room to knit handmade creations that are then donated to the community. Here is a look at some of what was distributed this year:
Most of our blankets and quilts (424 in total) are donated to Project Linus. They distribute them to Westside Health centers, A.I. duPont Hospital, Christiana Hospital, Emergency rooms at Christiana and Newark and Bayada nurse. We provided blankets to the Christiana NICU and the Penn Medicine NICU which includes end of life blankets, We support the Newark COOP which donates hats and scarves (619) to various organizations such as Newark churches, Hope Dining room, the empowerment center and schools in the area. We took baby hats to Westside Health Center in Brookside. We have given hats to Cecil County Help Center via Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church.
We would like to thank the members of NSC for their generous donations of yarn and cotton fabric. Without these donations, our group would not have been able to make and donate all of these items.

IMPROVE BRAIN HEALTH & REDUCE RISK OF DEMENTIA
Mondays, April 1st – May 6th 9:30am
Presented by: Dr. Matthew Coehn and UD’s Center for Cognitive Aging Research
About 40% of cases of dementia could be delayed or prevented by reducing modifiable risk factors and living a brain-healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, there is a lot of "snake oil" marketed to older adults and it is difficult to discern what is backed by scientific evidence. Furthermore, changing health behaviors is difficult and requires counseling and support. The Brain Wellness Information, Support, and Empowerment (Brain-WISE) program is a 6-session, group-based workshop, run by UD faculty, clinicians, and students, to teach people about brain health and help them make a plan to improve and sustain brain health in aging. No cost. Participants get free workbook and free, optional cognitive and hearing screenings. Please register by emailing Kimberly Van Buren (kvan@udel.edu)

BEING BURIED ALIVE: THE FEAR THAT SWEPT 19TH CENTURY AMERICA
Wednesday, May 1st 1:00pm
Speaker through Delaware Humanities Forum:
Margaret Opsata
The line dividing life from death was not clearly defined in the 1800’s. In the rush to bury a corpse quickly, before contagious disease could spread, people who were comatose, catatonic, sedated, or just plain drunk were sometimes mistaken for dead. Factual and fictional accounts of unfortunate souls awakening in their coffin, combined with medical disagreements about how to test definitively for absence of life, created widespread panic and led to imaginative inventions for preventing premature burial. No Cost. Register at the Reception Desk
