Dear Friends,

For the past year, we have focused primarily on the expansion of the facility, continuing to recover from COVID and simply keeping all the balls in the air. I would like to talk more about why we are here and why we do what we do.

Many years ago, we had a visiting professor from Italy who was brought in for a conference held by the University of Delaware. His focus was the importance of resources for seniors throughout the community to help people live independently. We did a tour of the Center and showed him all that we had to offer. At the end of the tour he remarked that he wasn’t sure why he was here because the NSC was a perfect example of what he was brought here to discuss.

We are reading more and more about a preventative approach to aging. Providing resources and opportunities for the 50+ community is our mission. The programs and opportunities provided by the center focus on physical, mental and emotional health. Although it is nothing new, it is now getting more attention that what is good for the heart is good for the brain. Many older people are just as concerned, if not more so, about brain health as heart health.

Another aspect of health aging is socialization. I believe that what makes participation here truly unique is the opportunity to engage with others. I know that you could take an exercise class anywhere. But, the NSC offers such a welcoming facility that many people are comfortable lingering in the lobby, dining room or library to catch up with friends and connect with others. It is a more complete experience than many other venues may provide.

Thank you to all who make this place such a community treasure. The Board, the staff, the members and volunteers all play a critical role in our success.

In response to the feedback we have we received, we will be changing the rooms where some programs meet. Please be sure to check the TV displays and room signs to be sure you are in the right place!

Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.

The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.

BEING BURIED ALIVE: THE FEAR THAT SWEPT 19TH CENTURY AMERICA

Wednesday, May 1st 1:00pm

Speaker through Delaware Humanities Forum: Margaret Opsata

The line dividing life from death was not clearly defined in the 1800’s. In the rush to bury a corpse quickly, before contagious disease could spread, people who were comatose, catatonic, sedated, or just plain drunk were sometimes mistaken for dead. Factual and fictional accounts of unfortunate souls awakening in their coffin, combined with medical disagreements about how to test definitively for absence of life, created widespread panic and led to imaginative inventions for preventing premature burial. PASS THE RUM: THE RISE AND FALL OF PROHIBITION

Thursday, August 15th 10:30am

Presenter: Mike Dixon, DE Humanities Forum

This program looks at the historical attempt to regulate the consumption of alcohol over the centuries. While most people are aware of prohibition in the 1920s, during the so-called Noble Experiment, attempts to regulate this behavior extend far into our past. While the program pays deeper attention to the modern era, as the nation and the State of Delaware struggled to live with the prohibition law for nearly 14 years, it takes a much longer view. During the presentation the audience will hear colorful stories of rum runners, moonshiners, bathtub gin, intriguing personalities, complicated politics, organized crime, outgunned lawmen, and the temperance movement.
