September 2021

Dear Friends,

September is National Senior Center Month. Typically, the National Council on Aging suggests a theme for the month. But this year, they have recommended that each Senior Center choose their own pertinent theme. As I ponder options, I am drawn to the word “adaptation”.

The Newark Senior Center has been at the forefront as we continue to adapt to safely serve members of our community. Many Senior Centers throughout the region have still not opened their doors to members. The NSC has continued to serve our Meals on Wheels clients throughout the pandemic. But just as importantly, we have opened our doors to serve our members for more than a year. We have also worked to develop virtual programming when members needed it the most.

Adaptation has been the key to our service. Our staff has had to adapt as we have transitioned to a reservation system for all programming. Our members have done an amazing job figuring out our registration system, abiding by capacity limits, and dealing with mask mandates. I know we all had great hope that we could put COVID behind us. As we listen to the news each day we will continue to adapt with the intention of keeping our doors open and serving our members safely. We have a very full fall planned with fundraising events, social activities and additional program offerings. It is only by adapting – and probably more than a little patience – that we will be able to carry out these ambitious plans. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation. Stay well,

If you become ill with COVID within 2 weeks of visiting NSC, please notify us at 737-2336 x115 or cgrygiel@newarkseniorcenter.com. Pre-registration for various activities allows us to conduct contact tracing if necessary.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Kate's Fitness Korner by Kate Boettger, NSC Fitness Center Manager

THE IMPORTANCE OF BALANCE Do you feel unsteady walking around? Have you noticed that you have trouble or take longer going up and down steps? All of this can be attributed to a loss of balance, which is a normal part of aging. Balance issues can be affected by a multitude of factors, including arthritis, changes in sensation in your legs, and the balance receptors in your ears (known as the vestibular system) becoming less fluid. With the loss of balance and the looming unsteady feeling, it is common for people to reduce the amount of time they spend moving around. When people start becoming more sedentary, that can cause more issues, such as the loss of strength and endurance and increases the risk of obesity, heart disease and even falls. Check out the following tips on how to stay active and you will be on your way to better balance in no time!

• Keep moving - Simple movements such as sitto-stands, stepping up and down, walking short distances and practicing standing on one foot while holding onto a counter or banister will not only keep you active, but will help keep your balance receptors active. • Go on short walks - Find a smooth surface, such as a track, sidewalk or parking lot and start out with walking for about 5-10 minutes. As you start to feel more comfortable walking, gradually increase your time and distance. • Consider using a cane or walker - While some people could view this as “limiting”, the use of a walking device can increase your mobility and independence. Canes and walkers are great to have “just in case” and will make you feel more confident and comfortable while walking around town! • Limit Hazards - Take a look around your house and remove any carpets, move around cords and remove any clutter that could cause any falls. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how you can have better balance, stop by the fitness center any time!
