October 2022 www.newarkseniorcenter.com2
Dear Friends,
It is almost impossible to believe that October is upon us! The staff was commenting just the other day that it seems like we have just skipped over a few years. I think you will agree that we have made a real effort to bring back a wide array of programming. Please take a close look at this newsletter as we have many programs that are new to the Center and are very relevant, entertaining, and informative.
October is Flea Market month! It is that time of year when we ask you to sort through your things and donate new or gently used items to be resold to benefit the programs and services here at the Newark Senior Center. This event really does take a village of volunteers to make it a success. We are so grateful to have such wonderful support and such generous donors. It is truly one of the best treasure hunts around! Thank you for whatever role you play – a donor, volunteer or shopper – we could not do it without you!
As I write this letter, our pool is still not operational. Please know that we are all anxious to renew our therapeutic pool offerings. The replacement of this piece of equipment was initiated in the early spring. I know it is doesn’t make many of our loyal pool users feel any better, but if this process had not started in the spring – we would be waiting many more months to reopen. We tried to take advantage of this downtime and have resurfaced the pool as well. It is our hope that when we reopen, we will be able to provide a wonderful and treasured community resource - the warm waters of our therapeutic pool.
Please take a close look at this and future newsletters! We have some exciting changes coming.
Enjoy fall,
No Classes Held Tuesday, October 25th – October 28th Due to the Flea Market. Meeting of Minds, Pool & Fitness Center will Remain Open!
LUNCH POLICY
It is the policy of the Center that everyone is expected to pay for their lunches. As you are aware, food costs have risen dramatically. Our staff works hard to keep our meal options convenient and affordable, all meal prices are subsidized by other fundraising efforts, grants and donations. Our Food Service Staff works very hard each day to prepare a delicious lunch. We are all very grateful to have such tasty and low cost options available. Thank you!
Please look for the symbol next to programming with the focus of “Time to get your house in order!”
THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

We begin our day at the Sight & Sound Millennium Theatre for the showing of Moses. From the banks of the Nile River to the depths of the Red Sea, MOSES is a spectacular entertainment experience for the whole family! Set adrift as a baby, he is an unlikely hero — until God calls him to lead His people out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Journey with Moses as he ventures through the wilderness, encounters God at the burning bush, and ascends to the top of Mount Sinai. Experience one of the Bible’s most epic stories as MOSES comes to life with massive sets, special effects, and live animals in this original stage production. Then off to a family style luncheon at the Hershey Farms Restaurant before departing home. CURRAN TRAVEL

YOUR EXIT PLAN DON’T LEAVE LIFE WITHOUT IT VIA ZOOM
Wednesday, November 9th
Presenter: Carla Grygiel
1:00pm
Thanks to Phyllis Edwards for sharing this important presentation.
Many people plan for the future; how we are going to spend our life – vacations, activities, finances. Some of us have even done some planning on how we will exit this life —will, trust, power of attorney, and living will. But even the savviest among us may overlook one crucial element in our exit plan: a Letter of Final Instruction. It’s the ‘missing link’ connecting how you currently live with how you plan to exit. This letter of instruction is a non-legally binding document that provides your family with guidance upon your death on little things that wouldn’t necessarily go into a legal document. It answers the questions that the rest of your exit plan does not and can save your family a lot of stress and confusion.

VIETNAM MAILBAG
Tuesday, November 1st 1:00pm
Presenter: Nancy Lynch When American troops in Vietnam answered the call to correspond with a young reporter four decades ago, they could not have envisioned the enduring relevancy of their war letters or the rich legacy their words, photographs and memorabilia would leave to succeeding generations. Ms. Lynch discusses and reads selected war letters from her book, Vietnam Mailbag, Voices From the War: 1968-1972, based on her popular newspaper column, “Nancy’s Vietnam Mailbag.” She is accompanied by Vietnam veteran Rick Lovekin, a Huey helicopter door gunner, Cobra crew chief and frequent letter writer to Nancy, who shows slides from Vietnam set to 1960s music.
