October 2020

Dear Friends,

October is usually one of our favorite months of the year. It is the time of year that we see another miracle occurring. The gathering of other peoples “stuff” to sell for the benefit of the NSC. If we had a most frequently asked question section “Are you having the flea market?” would be at the top of the list. Unfortunately, we are not able to operate this incredible fundraiser safely. Over the years, we have evaluated all of our fundraising events. Because of decreasing revenue or lack of interest some have been discontinued. Others, like the flea markets and Empty Bowls have continued to flourish. Hopefully, these types of events will resume in the coming year. We are now in our 3rd month of gradually reopening the Center. As you can see on the following pages of the newsletter, each month we are adding additional programs, expanding hours and seeing more people each day. Since the COVID pandemic began in March we have tried to use a common sense approach to administering various programs at the Center.

The reopening has gone very smoothly. I appreciate the care, concern and consideration members have shown to insure a safe facility. The staff is constantly evaluating the facility, staffing and programming as we work our way through this. Safe and measured is the approach we are all taking as we strive to increase opportunities for activity and socialization in a controlled environment. The value of socialization and remaining physically active as we age have been driving principals of senior centers for many years. During the past 6 month I believe we all have a greater appreciation for being connected to others. You may not feel comfortable resuming “normal” activity but we will continue to offer virtual programming so that you have the opportunity to participate at some level. Meals on Wheels continues to serve the most vulnerable in our community each day. A very special thank you to our many long-time volunteers as well as new volunteers who have joined us since March. We are so grateful for your generous spirit! During the month of October, I hope you will take advantage of the cool fall air. It is the perfect time to comfortably gather with friends and family. Stay well,

FALL CELEBRATIONS...VIRTUALLY We are obviously not able to hold our popular Halloween Social this year and we are also limited in how we can honor our Veterans...but we don't want to let these occasions go unnoticed! We are asking our community to send in pictures of themselves in their favorite Halloween costume (from your childhood or more recently). We will post an album on the NSC Facebook page and ask people to "like" their favorite...winner will receive an NSC prize pack! Additionally, if you have pictures of yourself in uniform, please send those so we can put together a digital collage to thank our service members

Please email your pictures to Kelly Riale at kriale@newarkseniorcenter.com. Halloween pictures must be received by 10/20. Veteran's Day pictures must be received by 11/2.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.
