Hi Friends, Happy New Year!

I want to thank all of you who have contributed to our Annual Appeal. As of the time I write this, we are at about 50% of the way to our $100,000 goal! It is so gratifying to know that there are so many who also believe in our mission of enhancing the lives of the 50+ community and want to support it.

In 2026 NSC will be celebrating our 60th anniversary. It is remarkable to me that over the past 60 years, our mission has not really changed. In fact, some of our programs have been around for 60 years. Did you know that our secretary, Margaret Fraser, used to BE the transportation program? She would pick members up at their homes and bring them to the Center. While the transportation program has obviously evolved and grown over time, we have always believed it was important to provide opportunities that fight isolation.

Meals On Wheels is another cornerstone program of the NSC. We now prepare and deliver an average of 250 meals each weekday to homebound clients in the Greater Newark area. According to a study by Brown University, Meals on Wheels is the only program proven to prevent people from prematurely being admitted to a long-term care facility.

Just as important is the personal connection that volunteers make with the recipients.

I recently heard that we have a MOW client who is 103 years old and told some of the volunteers that she liked gospel music – those volunteers now deliver her hot lunch with a side of gospel music!

On February 22nd we will host our Empty Bowls event that specifically benefits the Meals on Wheels program. See page 47 for more information and grab your friends for an afternoon that is sure to leave you with a warm feeling!

A Guided Group Experience for those with early stages of dementia or memory loss

WHO QUALIFIES FOR MEALS ON WHEELS? Individuals are age 60+ and/or

physically disabled; they may be homebound, unable to prepare an adequate meal, have a chronic disease or condition, be recovering from an illness or injury, or be very frail & lacking family support.

HOW MUCH DOES MOW COST? Clients make a donation toward the cost of their meals based on their individual financial situation. Meals on Wheels staff work with clients to establish suggested donation levels. by Jada Hall, NSC Fitness Center Manager As we welcome a brand new year, it’s important to not pressure yourself into changing routines, habits, and expectations overnight. The most meaningful growth doesn’t come from trying to be a completely different person on day one. It comes from small, steady steps that feel natural and kind to your body and mind. This year, I want to remind you just like I remind you to accept where you are and be kind to yourself. You don’t need to jump into intense workouts or overhaul your entire lifestyle all at once. Start with one small thing that feels manageable. Maybe it’s adding a few minutes of stretching in the morning, taking a gentle walk after lunch, or choosing a healthier option for one meal a day. These small increments build a foundation that actually lasts, because they’re realistic and compassionate. What matters most is consistency, not perfection. When you take things slowly, you give yourself room to adjust, breathe, and grow without burning out. And those tiny choices? They add up in ways you won’t even notice until one day you look back and realize how far you’ve come.

So as we step into this new year together, I hope you give yourself the grace to start gently. Be patient with yourself. Celebrate the small wins. Trust that every little step forward counts. You don’t have to change your whole life overnight you just have to be willing to begin.

As a volunteer for Meeting of Minds you can be a cheerleader, companion, and advocate! MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERY

We need regular or substitute drivers for several routes in the greater Newark area! Meals are delivered Monday through Friday and can be picked up between 10:30am-11am. Each route takes about 90 minutes of your time. YOU can become a Meals on Wheels volunteer if you have a valid license, insured vehicle, and pass a background check. NSC delivers an average of 200 hot meals each day plus bagged suppers to homebound clients in the greater Newark area. We are a group of Senior Center members who like to help other seniors learn about technology. We are not a techie group, just volunteers who enjoy learning new things and helping others learn. We have over 200 members with varying levels of technology experience, many of whom are eager to help others.

WHAT WE DO

We train you on the use of lab resources, including document, photo and slide scanning; converting different types of video to a DVD or digital format. We also help with problems on devices (computer, tablet, camera, smartphone).

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer programs and classes for all levels of experience. Monday afternoon labs for club members offer oneon-one help with a more experienced club member. Thursday afternoon programs offer a variety of speakers on the latest technology. We also offer open lab sessions for Senior Center members on Mondays and Tuesdays.

HOW TO JOIN

You must be a member of the Newark Senior Center to become a member of the Technology Club. Stop by the computer lab when it is open and someone will provide you a brochure listing all the benefits and offer a membership form to complete. After you join, you will be offered classes, free instruction and free advice for your devices. You will also have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Thursday, January 8th & 22nd 9:30am Bags2Mats consist of volunteers who recycle plastic bags and soft-like material to create mats for the homeless in Delaware. Join us to collect, cut and loop plastics. Volunteers are also needed to crochet and/or weave mats on our 3x6 loom.

The plastic mats help to retain body heat while also keeping bedding and other belongings dry and clean.
