Dear Friends,

Have you ever heard of anyone, anything, any entity celebrate reaching a milestone of 1,000? More than 20 years ago, the Let’s Dance Group began meeting at the Senior Center. For the past 17 years, Joe and Theresa Pezely have joyfully led this wonderful group. Joe takes great pride in providing music that spans the decades. More recently, the 2nd hour is devoted to rock ‘n roll and line dance so everyone can enjoy the music. As Theresa very wisely said, “we needed to change”. You can still watch or join in as members dance the traditional ballroom steps – we have had many excellent dancers over the years. Each Thursday afternoon members are welcome gather to enjoy more contemporary music, snacks, and meet new friends. Congratulations on 1,000 wonderful afternoons of dance! So many of our activities gain a very loyal following. The Senior Center is a critical part of the lives of many exercise participants, card players, and other enrichment opportunities. I am certain we have individuals who have played hundreds, if not thousands of: hands of cards, hours of exercise, pool or fitness center activity. I know some of our volunteers have committed countless hours of service to the Center and members of our community. We are so grateful for the level of support and participation of our members. Thank you for completing the member survey. The staff and Board will be evaluating your responses as we plan for the future. We will also be holding several focus groups to attain more details from participants. The 1st 2 focus groups are scheduled for May 5th or May 18th at 2:00 pm. Please email me at cgrygiel@newarkseniorcenter.com if you are interested in participating.

We continually welcome new members to the senior center and are so pleased to see others return after a long leave caused by COVID. Thank you for trusting in us and each other as we continue to try to provide a safe environment for members of our community. Enjoy spring,

Gardening: After many years of hard work, our gardener Jim will not be able to help out this year. We are looking for volunteers for general garden maintenance. Jim has done an amazing job of planting many bulbs and perennials but general ongoing maintenance is needed. Carla will assist with plant identification and general guidance. Please look for the symbol next to programming with the focus of “Time to get your house in order!”

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL FITNESS

FROM MARK STIBICH, PH.D., YOUR GUIDE TO LONGEVITY. There are two basic principles to keep your brain healthy and sharp as you age: variety and curiosity. When anything you do becomes second nature, you need to make a change. Curiosity about the world around you, how it works and how you can understand it will keep your brain working fast and efficiently. Use the ideas below to help attain your quest for mental fitness. 1. Play Games Games are a wonderful way to tease and challenge your brain. spend 15 minutes or so, not hours. 2. Meditation Daily meditation is perhaps the single greatest thing you can do for your mind/ body health. It not only relaxes you, it gives your brain a workout by creating a different mental state. 3. Eat for Your Brain Your brain needs you to eat healthy fats. Focus on fish oils from wild salmon, nuts such as walnuts, seeds such as flax seed and olive oil. 4. Tell Good Stories Stories are a way that we solidify memories, interpret events and share moments. Practice telling your stories orally or in written form. 5. Turn Off Your Television The average person watches more than 4 hours of television everyday. Turn off your TV and spend more time living, connecting to others and exercising your mind and body. 6. Exercise Your Body To Exercise Your Brain Choose a variety of exercises to challenge your brain. 7. Read Something Different Books are portable, free from libraries and filled with infinite interesting characters, information and facts. Branch out from familiar reading topics. 8. Learn a New Skill Learning a new skill works multiple areas of the brain.

www.newarkseniorcenter.com

9. Make Simple Changes To really help your brain stay young, challenge it. Change routes to the grocery store, use your opposite hand to open doors and eat dessert first. All this will force your brain to wake up from habits and pay attention again. 10. Train Your Brain Brain training is becoming a trend. There are formal courses, websites and books with programs on how to train your brain to work better and faster. There is some research behind these programs, but the basic principles are memory, visualization and reasoning. Work on these three concepts everyday and your brain will be ready for anything. Meeting of Minds By: Mariah Beckles

Meeting of Minds does more than meets the eye. According to a study done in 2018 one in nine Americans aged 45 and older say they are experiencing thinking declines which is often the first sign of Alzheimer's or dementia. Meeting of Minds is a program run by Laura Greene that aims to assist those with early memory loss. This is achieved in multiple ways. There is a variety of activities that are designed to keep the members engaged and stimulate cognitive activity through puzzles, trivia, crafts, and exercise. Every exercise is designed to accommodate the seniors and whether it is in the form of dancing or chair yoga, it requires the members to think and engage. According to the Mayo Clinic “Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain,” which makes it a vital part of Meeting of Minds daily routine. Every day, before lunch is served, exercise is performed and consists of moments that work the arms, legs, and the mind. When it comes to the various activities they are often a combination of singular and group activities. The level of engagement becomes just as important as the activity itself. As vital as these components are another major part of Meeting of Minds is the social aspect. “Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress, both of which can contribute to memory loss,” the Mayo Clinic states in a recent article. Every member of this program that I have spoken to mentions how they enjoy the social interaction with the various members. “There are people here that I can associate with that are in the same shape as me. It gives me hope.” Fran stated when he spoke with me on why he comes to Meeting of Minds. “Just the interaction with people…it’s important to me.” Josh expressed to me during our conversation. It is a sentiment that was repeated frequently no matter who I spoke to in Meeting of Minds. Judith spoke highly of the program and everyone involved. “I like Meeting of Minds because it does a good service to our age group. Laura is gifted. She knows what she’s doing and does it well.” When asked why she continues to come to the program her response was “I go here because it’s fun”. “You get to keep up with your friends and enjoy life” she added. The most important piece of wisdom I received was “Life is not over because you’re 50 or 60 or 80.” With programs like Meeting of Minds Newark Senior Center proves that there is life after 50.

Kate's Fitness Korner by Kate Boettger, NSC Fitness Center Manager May is National Mental Health Awareness month, 31 days to bring light to mental health disorders and break the stigma that is associated with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. In the US alone, about 20% of adults suffer from a mental illness and there has been a significant increase in mental health issues in the past year due to the pandemic, such as increased fears about leaving the house, feelings of hopelessness and isolation, and anxieties arising from not knowing what is going to happen next. Check out the following tips to keep your mind healthy and happy!

1. Keep Healthy - Studies show that individuals

who make it a priority to stay active and eat a fairly clean diet are less likely to have higher levels of depression and anxiety compared to their sedentary counterparts. During the week, try going on a quick walk, making sure you are eating your fruits and vegetables and sleeping 6-8 hours a night will help keep your mind and body healthy and happy.

2. Call a friend or family member - Since the

pandemic hit, seeing friends and family face-to-face has been limited, leading to feelings of isolation. If you are ever feeling sad, lonely or anxious, give one of your loved ones a call! Not only is it a great way to catch up and connect, but it gives you a chance to talk about anything that troubles you and get some help from someone who cares about you!

3. Take a break - In a world where it seems to be

“Go! Go! Go!” all the time, it’s important to stop for a second to take a breather & relax. Whether it is for a few minutes to eat a hearty meal, sitting outside with a great book, or watching a show that you love, make sure you set a few minutes (or hours) aside to do something that makes YOU happy.

Most importantly, if you ever are having feelings of depression, anxiety, anything really, just know you are not alone. If you ever need to talk to someone, we are all here to help and listen.
