May 2021

Dear Friends,

May is Older American’s Month. The theme this year is “Communities of Strength.” I have always considered the sense of community at the Newark Senior Center to be one of its strengths. Someone who is new to the Center might come for a particular activity or service. But, as we form connections to others we feel that we are a part of a greater community.

For many, it is the social connection that becomes the most important facet of membership at the Center. Through our relationships with our peers we feel comfortable sharing life’s experiences. Many times, it is the casual sharing that expands access to programs and services that benefit us as individuals, our family or our friends. The Newark Senior Center offers a more formal connection to resources through our Social Services Director, Anika Turner. She is available by phone, email or in person to explore resources that are available here at the Center and throughout the Newark area.

The newsletter is filled with opportunities to develop social connections, strengthen our relationships and enhance our lives. We are currently offering a wide range of both in person and virtual programs. I have been participating in one of our virtual book groups. It is really wonderful to chat with others about a book and to hear different points of view and develop connections with others. We feel more secure if we know we have a strong support system. This past year has made us very aware of the strength of that system and our relationship with our community. As we move into and through spring, I am hopeful that we can learn from this past year and develop those connections that bring joy to our lives. Take care,

The COVID 19 Vaccine is getting into the community & we are considering how to safely resume the various programming that does not naturally allow for social distancing. Please take a moment to complete a survey at www.newarkseniorcenter.com to help us navigate this next step.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Wendell Davis Retires Wendell Davis has served as the Facility Director at the Newark Senior Center since August 2009. Even before starting as an employee, Wendell and his mother were frequent Meals on Wheels volunteers. During the past 12 years, Wendell has overseen major transformation at the Center. We have renovated, expanded and replaced much of the Center that was originally built in 1996. He has also been an excellent steward of the daily facility operations as the Center generally hosts more than 70,000 guests per year. Wendell is now ready to turn the page and more fully enjoy life as an official retiree. We are very grateful for all that he has done for the Center over more than a decade. Thank you – we wish you well. Carla and the entire Newark Senior Center community.
