Dear Friends,

Think globally, act locally was a very common approach to protecting the environment. I like to think of this approach as it applies to time, talent and treasure. The Newark Senior Center is what it is because of so many people in our community who intentionally choose to support this organization.

Time may be perceived as the easiest thing to give. But, at the NSC we rely on so many volunteers who give so generously of their time. These individuals are kind, caring, understanding and dedicated. Each month our volunteers provide well over 1,000 hours of service to sustain the Meals on Wheels, Meeting of Minds, the Reception Desk and our Gift shop. Meals on Wheels provides much needed nutrition to the homebound throughout our community but our volunteers provide a compassionate visit – often the only human interaction that these clients experience. Our Meeting of Minds program serves those in the early stages of memory loss as well as respite for their caregivers. This guided group experience has served our community since 2016 and will be expanding in the coming year. Our reception desk volunteers are the face of the Center for our members. They provide tours, assist with membership and program registration but just as importantly provide a friendly face to all who visit the Center.

Talented members of our community often use their life experience to enhance programming at the center. Many members are involved in the technology club, lead various group, or even serve on the Board of Directors or a committee. The NSC is so fortunate to count among it’s members individuals with very diverse backgrounds, professional experience and so many willing to share to enrich the lives of others.

Treasure may very well be one of the most important gifts from this community to the NSC. Many years ago, the community came together and gave of their treasure to build this wonderful community resource. The thought that if you build it they will come certain rang true with the construction of this place. As the years have gone by, many donors, local businesses and foundations have chosen to support the Center. For many, myself included, we are able to see the difference the Center makes in the lives of so many each day. Because of our generous donors, we have been able to keep our programs and services affordable, renovate, maintain and expand the facility, and develop and expand programming to meet the needs of our community.

Treasure can come in many forms and at different times. Our Legacy Donors have made arrangements in their estate plans to recognize the Center. This can be done in your Will or it can be done by naming the Newark Senior Center as a beneficiary or partial beneficiary of a retirement, investment, savings account, or insurance policy. Over the years we have been able to add the education wing to the building, replace critical equipment as needed and renovate the facility. Legacy gifts have ranged from a few thousand to more than a million dollars. These gifts have transformed the Newark Senior Center from a small building on Main Street to the first and only nationally accredited senior center in the State. If you have any questions about this form of giving, Jessica Feinberg, our Development Director or I are available to answer your questions. This is also something that is best discussed with a trusted financial advisor.

Thank you to all who make the Newark Senior Center a true community treasure. Happy June!

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Recently, there has been a lot of news centered around "loneliness" and how it can impact someone's physical health.

Other than being emotionally painful, loneliness can impact people in many ways:

Depression: A 2021 study published in Lancet Psychiatry found associations between loneliness and depressive symptoms in a group of adults 50 years old and older. Research also suggests that loneliness and depression may feed off of and perpetuate each other.

Physical health: Several studies have linked emotional stress with depressed immunity. Other research links loneliness and depression with poorer health and well-being. Therefore, people who are experiencing loneliness are susceptible to a variety of health issues.

Physical pain: Research shows that the areas of the brain that deal with social exclusion are the same areas that process physical pain, adding a scientific explanation to the oft-romanticized experience of a "broken heart."

If you’re experiencing loneliness, there are some things you can do that may help:

Thank You to our Volunteers

To be honest, the Newark Senior Center could not function without the hundreds of volunteers that help us to carry out our mission each and every day. There are the volunteers that help each day in essential roles such as delivering Meals on Wheels, assisting in the Meeting of Minds and working at the Gift Shoppe and our Reception Desk. There are dozens more that help "behind the scenes" on a regular basis. There is also an army of volunteers that help at our special events like the flea markets in April & October. Whether you help "out front" or more "in the back," please know that the NSC Board & Staff see you and appreciate all that you do to help the Center day in and day out.

If you would like to learn more about the various volunteer opportunities available, please contact Maura at 302-737-2336 ext 101 or maura@newarkseniorcenter.com for more information.

CAPE MAY – HISTORY BY THE SEA

Monday, June 19th 10:00am

Many people think of Cape May, NJ as a place to go to in the summer for a vacation by the sea. For those of us in Delaware we may think of Cape May as the New Jersey version of the Atlantic Coast of our Sussex County. While there are obvious parallels, it may not be appreciated that interesting, unique, and significant historical personalities and events occurred in the Cape May region which have had national and international consequences, beginning as early as the 15th century. My presentation provides an overview of the rich history of this area and the impact it has had that continues even into the present day. No Cost. Please Register at the Reception Desk.
