TABLE OF CONTENTS
maschiavo@verizon.net
Dear Friends,
I had a wonderful conversation with one of our grateful members this week. She expressed her appreciation for the center and said that nowhere these days can you get more for less. Barbara was talking about our new Fitness Access Pass. This pass allows members to participate in fitness activities in the guarded therapeutic pool, the staffed fitness center and the instructed exercise classes, all for the very low cost of $30 per month. It is very important to us, and always has been, to keep our programs as accessible as possible. We are seeing increasing participation, many new members and many returning members. This past year, we have welcomed nearly 700 new members!
Membership for the Center is still only $33 per year. The Center provides incredible opportunities to remain active in the community. With the wide array of programs, there is truly something for everyone. One of the most important outcomes of the center is the social connections that are formed. Please be sure to welcome new members into the Center and into the various groups. It is never easy to come to a new place for the first time. I value the friendly and welcoming environment that we try to provide.
As this year progresses, we continue with our facility expansion. The expansion is taking place on the north and west sides of the building. I am thrilled to be able to share that because of the generous support of the State of Delaware Community Reinvestment Fund, the Crystal Trust, the Crestlea Foundation and the Longwood Foundation, the project is fully funded. We are anticipating that the project will be completed this winter. We are excited to expand programming for our members as well as provide access to more families in our Meeting of Minds program.
As we have more available space. It is our goal to provide more enrichment programming. I always refer to this as what I would consider Social Studies. It may be classes focusing on: history, art, travel, civics etc. We will be looking for facilitators, discussion leaders and presenters for various classes. Please reach out to our program staff if you have any suggestions or would be willing to share your experiences or expertise. Katie Rivera is our Program Director and Heather Mitchell is our Program Coordinator.
Join us for lunch or one of our social events in the coming months. The construction has little to no impact on our programing and opportunities at the Center.
Enjoy summer!

Meals On Wheels A Community Effort
The Meals on Wheels Program has always been a cornerstone of the Newark Senior Center. Delivering hot, freshly prepared meals to homebound seniors has always been a priority. When COVID forced the NSC to close, Meals on Wheels became an essential service. The demand for meals increased 63% from the previous year.
We have been delivering an average of 230 meals per day including bagged suppers since March 2020 and it has truly been a community effort. The food services staff have become essential employees, and our pool of volunteers has grown as people working from home have wanted to help their community.
The success of the MOW program hinges on many factors including; the dedication of the NSC staff, the large pool of volunteers, and the financial support from our community.

Your bill is submitted to Medicare and then Medicare forwards the bill to your Medicare Supplement Plan for coverage. Depending on the type of Medicare Supplement you have, you may be responsible for annual deductible (Plan G) or the deductible plus there may be a $20 copay per visit or if the provider elects to charge 15% more than the Medicare approved amount, you could be responsible for that as well (Plan N). If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you may be required to use plan doctors and/or to obtain preapproval. Marketplace or employer insurance can have similar limitations. In those instances, you have to make sure that your insurance covers services by each provider that you deal with.”.

Kate's Fitness Korner
by Kate Boe ger, NSC Fitness Center ManagerAs we’re entering the hotter months, it’s very important that we keep ourselves cool when working outside in the garden, walking around town or just enjoying a nice summer day. Studies have shown that adults older than 65 or have a chronic medical condition are at a greater risk of developing heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which occurs when your body’s temperature regulating systems are being overworked and start shutting down. Here are a few tips to keep cool during the next few weeks
1. Wear light fabrics and loose fitting clothing, such as cotton, linen-blends in lighter colors. Avoid fabrics such as polyester and nylon as they do not wick away sweat and sometimes can cause you to sweat more!
2. Avoid going outside during peak heat hours (late morning through early evening) and stay inside in air conditioning. This might be the easiest way to stay cool during the summer, and many local libraries, malls, senior centers (wink wink) offer great activities and events to keep you up and moving inside!
3. Drink water, even if you aren’t thirsty. Dehydration is the primary cause of heat exhaustion and is crucial when it comes to being outside during the day. If you know you are going to be outside on a hot day, make sure you have a glass of water before you head out, as well as a bottle or two of water to sip on throughout the day.
