NEWARK SENIOR CENTER

E-mail:

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! I have always tried to write a new piece for each monthly newsletter – 220 letters! This year, I decided to look back at some from year’s past. I am resharing a portion of this letter from 2019.

“Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, love the people who treat you right, forgive the ones who don’t and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get the chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.” – Dr. Seuss

As I am enjoying time with my grandchildren, I am being reintroduced to the wisdom of the authors of many children's books. Although I don't believe this quote is a part of any of his books, it is certainly a wonderful outlook to adopt. Sometimes we all face challenges, but studies have shown that in addition to a healthy lifestyle, our attitude can extend our years but also add quality to our lives.

As we enter this winter season, many may face loneliness and isolation as the weather makes it more difficult to get out and about. When the weather isn’t a deterrent, please consider joining us for lunch or any of the other opportunities provided each day at the Center. Social interaction may be just the thing you need to boost your spirits and your energy.

As we welcome the new year and new and returning members, we hope every person feels a sense of kindness and belonging.

I wish you all a happy and healthy new year.

A special thanks to Stein Tree Service for trimming our trees this fall.  We are very grateful for this gift that helps us all to be proud of this wonderful place that is the Newark Senior Center.

Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.

The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.

New Managers sought for Established Newark-based League

Ever played Strat-O-Matic baseball? “Strat” is played with cards, dice, and charts where players take on the role of a team manager, controlling the batting order, pitching staff, & strategies. The cards are based on real-life statistics of actual MLB players.

Newark’s John B. Wockenfuss (JBW) Strat-OMatic League, founded in 1981, has twenty (20) teams playing a 130-game season beginning each April. It’s a commitment of approximately 3 to 4 hours per week. We currently have vacancies and are looking for new members!

BE ALERT FOR SCAMMERS & IMPOSTERS

- edited from Delmarva Power pamphlet

Phony Invoices

Scammers can pose as 3rd party suppliers and send phony bills via email to some customers. The email asks you to click on a link within the message. It is suspected that, by clicking the link, your computer could be infected with a virus or malware.

Reloadable Debit Cards

Scammers also call targted customers to tell them that their account is delinquent and that their service will be shut off for non-payment unless they purchase a reloadable debit card for a specific amount from a local retail store. Victims are then instructed to call the scammer's telephone number with their debit card's account and unique serial numbers. Once the scammer obtains this information, the value is downloaded, swept and stolen without a trace.

HAM GRANT

Jada's Journal

January is the ideal time of year to start over and concentrate on improving your quality of life. Big, drastic changes don't have to be the focus of New Year's resolutions. Rather, choose modest, achievable goals that you can truly maintain. Every small step counts, whether it's improving your diet, increasing your physical activity, or simply taking better care of yourself.

Consider what works for you if you want to maintain an active lifestyle. It could be dancing, stretching in the morning, or going for a stroll around the block. Selecting an activity you enjoy will make it feel more like something you look forward to than a duty.

In addition, it is important to take care of your emotional wellness. Whether it's a peaceful moment with a cup of tea, a phone call to a friend, or deep breathing exercises, it's important to make time for yourself. Self-care may make a big difference.

Keep in mind that this January is about progress rather than perfection. Keep moving forward and enjoy the little victories. You arere capable!
