Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! It seems to be tradition at this time of year to commit – or recommit to becoming more physically active. I might typically share the wonderful fitness opportunities for every level of ability. The new ease of participating with the fitness access pass. The streamlined process of automatic billing and no need to register. The options available at the Center from the therapeutic pool, the fitness center and the instructed exercise classes.

But instead, I would like to highlight the response of from our member survey conducted in 2022. One of the most frequent responses was the opportunity to connect with others. Most if not all of us really need connection to others. The NSC provides a safe environment to meet new people, possibly reconnect with friends from our past, or even deepen existing relationships.

Many of our members meet regularly at fitness classes then gather for a cup of coffee, lunch or simply a chat in the lobby. Others enjoy the more social activities like the card games, shuffleboard or billiards. No matter the activity of your choice consider branching out and taking advantage of some of the other offerings of the Center.

The staff does an amazing job of pulling together so many opportunities each month. This newsletter is full of a wide array of choices, truly something for everyone. Many of our members have come to us from other parts of the country and are delighted to find the Center to be an incredible resource that truly enriches their lives and helps them develop a new social network.

Thank you to all who have chosen to become a part of the Newark Senior Center community. Members, volunteers, donors and community partners all make this the perfect place to “celebrate life after 50”!

Bus service available Monday - Friday Cost: $2/day

In order to meet social distancing and contact tracing requirements, we are implementing the following procedures to the NSC Transportation Program:

• Participants who would like to use the Newark Senior Center transportation system must register for a ride at least 24 hours in advance.

• Registration is available online at www.newarkseniorcenter.com, by phone at 302-737-2336 or in person at the Reception Desk. Do not leave a voice message for a bus reservation or a cancellation.

• Payment ($2/day) must be made at the time of the reservation. NSC accepts major credit cards, cash or check (in person).

Newark Senior Center Board of Directors is composed of up to 18 members of our community. Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except July & August) at 5:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest.

• Transportation reservations can be made for 2 weeks at a time, as space allows.

• Cancellations must be made by 2pm the day before your ride in order to receive a credit.

REMINDER FOR NSC BUS RIDERS

In order to receive credit for cancelling a NSC Bus Ride, you must speak with an NSC Staff member before 2pm the day before the ride you wish to cancel. CREDITS WILL NOT BE ISSUED FOR MISSED RIDES OR RIDES CANCELLED AFTER 2PM THE DAY BEFORE. VOICEMAILS DO NOT COUNT.

HOPE DINING ROOM SOUP KITCHEN

Are you or a friend in need of a good meal? If so come to Hope Dining Room, Monday through Friday from noon - 1:00. For nearly 40 years, Hope Dining Room has been offering free lunches to those in need at Kingswood United Methodist Church, 300 Marrows Road. More than 20 Newark area faith and community groups volunteer to prepare and serve hot sit down lunches. Anyone who needs a meal is welcome. New serving groups and volunteers are also needed. Are you in need of medical equipment and don’t know where to get it? The Brookside Lions Club has the following equipment to give you to use until you don’t need it anymore: Wheelchairs, Canes, Crutches, Camodes, Raised Toilet Seats, Walkers, Shower chairs, and Bath tub side rails. HEARING LOOP NOW AVAILABLE AT THE NSC. Please check with your hearing specialist to see if your hearing aid is equipped with an enabled t-coil. The hearing loop sends pure clear sound directly from the sound system to your hearing aid. The hearing loop is available in the center section of the Evergreen room and in Classroom 1.

AARP TAX PREPARATION

Fridays, starting February 3rd 8:00am - 12noon

AARP will again provide free in-person tax preparation for uncomplicated returns on Friday mornings starting on February 3 from 8:00 until noon. It will be on a "first come first served" basis. There will be NO phone-in appointments. Sign-up sheets will be posted at the main entrance (through the awning in the back of the building) at the front door THE MORNING OF the tax preparation day.

Kate's Fitness Korner

January is the month for wiping the slate clean and starting the year off fresh, maybe even developing a routine. To make sure you are getting the best start, try this quick stretching routine before you get out of bed in the morning to wake up your muscles and get them ready for the day!

1. Full Body Stretch: Start by laying on your back and your legs flat on the bed. Start to raise your arms above your head and reach back as far as you can while keeping your knees straight and reaching your toes away from your body. Hold position for 10 seconds and relax. Repeat 3 times.

2. Figure 4: Cross your right foot over your left knee. Slowly bend your left knee toward the ceiling keeping your left foot on your mattress. Hold position for 10 seconds and relax. Repeat on each side 3 times.

3. Bed-to-Floor Stretch: Swing your feet over the side of your bed so your feet touch the floor. Keeping your knees bent, hang your head and arms down to the floor. Round your back over your knees and let your arms and head dangle to the floor. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 3 times.

If you’d like more stretches to do throughout the day or a demonstration of this quick routine, stop by the fitness center!

Learn about portrait measuring, features of the face and mixing skin color.

FEBRUARY: MONOCHROMATIC PAINTING

February 3rd - 24th Cost: $44 (4 sessions)

Paint in one color to observe values. This lesson will be in two parts: one mono painting and one regular color painting of the same subject.

MARCH: FLYING BIRDS

March 3rd - 31st Cost: $55 (5 sessions) Learn about painting birds from another perspective.

WATERCOLORS WITH BRUCE SIMMONS

Group's emphasis is on producing donations to various community groups. Members are welcome to work on their own projects, share pattern ideas, or attend to learn new skills. We are currently accepting full skeins of yarn and cotton/ quilting-type fabrics, flannel and fleece only. Please save all other sewing/crafting items until donations for a future flea market. MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERY

We are looking for regular or substitute drivers for several routes in the greater Newark area! Meals are delivered Monday through Friday and can be picked up between 10:30am-11am. Each route takes about an hour of your time. YOU can become a Meals on Wheels volunteer if you have a valid license, insured vehicle, and pass a background check. NSC delivers an average of 150 hot meals each day plus bagged suppers to homebound clients in the greater Newark area. YOU can help seniors continue to live independently in the community by delivering a healthy meal and friendly smile. Please, contact Stefanie Thomas for more information: 737-5747. GIFT SHOPPE VOLUNTEER

Volunteers handle sales of handmade consigned items. Volunteers are asked to work once or twice a month, 10 - 1. Stop in the shoppe to leave your name and number! Training provided.

MEETING OF MINDS PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for individuals to assist in our Meeting of Minds Program. Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 weekday/week from 9:30AM-2:15PM. As a volunteer for Meeting of Minds you can be a cheerleader, companion, and advocate! Volunteer responsibilities include assisting members with activities, creating a relaxing environment, and lunch set-up. RECEPTION DESK

We are seeking upbeat individuals with experience with computers and customer service to work at the NSC Reception Desk! Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one shift every other week. Shifts are weekdays from 9AM–12:30PM or 12:30PM–4PM. Volunteers are responsible for giving tours of the Center, answering the phones, and using the computer to register people for memberships, activities, and classes. TRAVEL

• Please sign up for trips as soon as possible and at least 40 days prior to the trip. Payments to the bus company and destinations are due & trips will be cancelled due to lack of registrations.

• You can register for trips in person or by phone, Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 3:00pm

• New trips cannot be registered for until the 1st of the month

• All trips depart from the North Entrance and are rain or shine

• Refunds will not be given for cancellations unless the seat can be resold. For trips costing less than $15, refunds will be issued in the form of credits.

• Phone numbers & emergency contact information are required for all trip participants.

• Individuals requiring assistance – NSC offers a wheel-chair lift for Jitney Jaunts only – please notify Receptionist when you make your reservation. Individuals requiring assistance to meet basic needs must travel with a companion. A reservation must be purchased for the companion to ensure seating.

JITNEY JAUNTS

• Jitney Jaunts are local trips using the NSC bus & are limited to 16 passengers (12 person minimum). There are no tour guides on these trips.

• When dining as a group, please keep in mind that some establishments will include a gratuity of up to 18%. Every effort is made to provide individual checks, but some restaurants cannot accommodate this request. If this is the case, checks will be provided for tables of 4.

• Jitney Jaunts are for NSC Members only. All Jitneys leave & return to the Center. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Center.

• Payment in full is due at the time of registration. Phone reservations require credit card payment.

• Please arrive 15 minutes before the published departure time.

EXTENDED TRIPS

• Flyers are available in the lobby with full information on all the trips.

• Deposits and completed reservation forms (available on flyers) are required upon registration of all extended trips. Final payment deadlines are listed on flyers.

• Please arrive 30 minutes before published departure time.

• NEW: We will only process deposits & insurance due at registration. All balances will be paid directly to travel agency.

Must have 40 passengers by March 1st. We’ll arrive at the Tomasello Winery for a lovely sit down luncheon, shopping and sampling. Please make meal selection when registering: chicken marsala or almond encrusted tilapia . Then off to Tropicana Casino for 5 hours for dinner on your own and free time. We are a group of Senior Center members who like to help other seniors learn about technology. We are not a techie group, just volunteers who enjoy learning new things and helping others learn. Over 200 members with varying levels of technology experience, from all walks of life, are eager to help others.

WHAT WE DO

We train you on the use of lab resources, including document, photo and slide scanning; converting different types of video to a DVD or digital format; & help with problems with devices (computer, tablet, camera, smartphone).

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer programs and classes for all levels of experience. Monday afternoon labs for club members offer oneon-one help with a more experienced club member. Thursday afternoon programs offer a variety of speakers on the latest technology. We also offer open lab sessions for Senior Center members on Mondays and Tuesdays.

HOW TO JOIN

You must be a member of the Newark Senior Center to become a member of the computer club. Stop by the computer lab when it is open and someone will provide you a brochure listing all the benefits and offer a membership form to complete. After you join, you will be offered classes, free instruction and free advice for your devices. You will also have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. ACCESS: $30

Starting November 1st all fitness/exercise memberships will change to Monthly Fitness Access. This membership will cost $30/month and will include unlimited visits to the pool and fitness center as well as unlimited group exercise classes for 1 month. This will streamline memberships and will replace the Pool/Group Exercise and Fitness Center memberships.

• If you currently have either a Pool & Group Exercise membership or a Fitness Center membership, the time you have left will automatically transfer to the new program and you will have access to all of the Group Exercise, Pool & Fitness Center amenities on November 1st.

• When it is time for you to renew your Fitness Access, you will be required to provide a credit card to be put on file and be charged monthly.

• Extensions will ONLY be given if you miss 5 consecutive days for a medical reason. Please contact Jamie Wigal at ext 122 or jwigal@newarkseniorcenter.com if you require a extension.

• You no longer need to register to attend classes or time slots

• You can still pay $8/class or visit if you do not wish to commit to an entire month.

AQUATIC AGELESS EXERCISE

Jump right into our aqua classes and build cardiovascular fitness and strength. Just like swimming, our water aerobics classes are easy on your joints, yet challenging enough to help you reach new levels of fitness. Because of their low-impact format, water aerobics classes are suitable for every age and fitness level, from beginning exercisers through elite athletes. Tone and sculpt your body with no impact to your joints. This popular water aerobics workout is a swimming blend of cardio and resistance training, and may incorporate resistance tools such as buoyant water weights and noodles.

You are as young as you feel! Feel fantastic as you resistance train to help improve your strength and endurance. Enhance your flexibility, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness through a variety of exercises to develop a healthier you. GUIDELINES

• Class sizes are limited. You must pre-register, registration is available for the 30 days of your membership.

• For the pool & fitness center, please register for the day you wish to attend, you no longer need to pick a specific time.

• Participants are required to bring their own equipment to group exercise classes: mats, hand weights etc.

• Please do your best to respect social distancing as possible.

This mindful mat class will strengthen your “Powerhouse”: abs, back, hips, buttocks, and thighs. Develop long, lean muscles, heighten mind-body awareness, and alleviate back pain. While practicing breath work, improve core stability, circulation, coordination and balance, flexibility, control and stamina, body alignment and posture, all while relieving stress and tension. Exercise mat required, however exercises can be modified for the chair.

Qigong (pronounced "chee gung") is an ancient Chinese exercise that combines easy to follow movements with mental focus and breath.
