January 2022

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! It feels like we have spent quite some time just treading water. Since the pandemic began, it is difficult to make plans, make changes, or make commitments. Some tasks are easy to put off until sometime in the future. “The future has a way of arriving unannounced”, George F. Will certainly rings true. Now, it is Time to get your house in order!

2022 will be the year we focus on getting our house in order, both literally and figuratively. The staff will be providing information and resources throughout the year. The information is really nothing new. We all know what we should be doing but sometimes we need a gentle reminder, or a firm push, to get started. Early in the year, we will focus on our “paper” house. There are documents that should be in place, planning and consideration that needs to occur, and instructions that need to be given – to someone. We will have local experts from our community provide guidance, advice and access to professional services.

During the spring and summer, we will focus on getting your health in order. As always, we will present a Health and Wellness Fair. This year there will be an emphasis on resources if the time has come to get the help you need. So many times, for ourselves or for those in our care, we do not seek out the help we need. There are many community resources that may be able to extend your ability to live independently or more effectively care for a loved one. It has been my experience that having a little help can often make us a better caregiver or partner.

In the fall, our Housing Fair has been a wonderful addition to resources presented to the community. So literally, the time has come to get your house in order. This may involve home repair, maintenance, energy efficiency or small changes that can make a big difference in extending your independence in your current home. It may also be that the time to move has come. There are many resources that can help with these efforts. Some of these resources may also be free to individuals who qualify. During the holiday season, we often consider giving back. For some giving is generally associated with financial gifts. But, just as importantly, the gift of time can have a wonderful impact on the community. Giving of your time, volunteering, can also have a positive affect on our mental health. Finding purpose, a way to give of your time, can be the best gift you can give yourself. As we look to the new year our time is such a precious gift. Over the past year, we have certainly learned that we never know what tomorrow will bring. It is my hope that the NSC can provide resources to help you make the most of your time this year. Please look for the symbol next to programming with the focus of “Time to get your house in order!”

If you become ill with COVID within 2 weeks of visiting NSC, please notify us at 737-2336 x115 or cgrygiel@newarkseniorcenter.com. Pre-registration for various activities allows us to conduct contact tracing if necessary.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Monday - Thursday 10:00am - 1:00pm As we start a New Year, the Gift Shoppe Managers would like to thank all our Crafters and Customers. You have made this past year a successful one for the Shoppe, despite the changes required due to the Pandemic. We also want to express our thanks and appreciation for our Faithful Volunteers, who offered to work the Shoppe as soon as we were allowed to reopen. Due to the reduced hours, we needed fewer Volunteers, but soon we hope to go back to our normal hours, and see all of you again. The NSC Gift Shoppe has become known in the area as the place to go to for unique Gifts. This would not be possible without all of you – Crafters, Volunteers, and Shoppers! Does radiometric dating prove the earth is 4.5 billion years old? As embryos, did we have tails and gills? Are chickens the remote descendants of dinosaurs? This, and much more, is in Darwinism's textbook. But did you know that each of these claims falls apart upon on examination? Newark Senior Center Funding A very special thank you to our supporters who help fund the many programs and services provided by the Newark Senior Center. The Newark Senior Center staff works very hard to maintain a diverse stream of funding. Sources include: grants, fundraising, donations, and membership dues and fees for service. When you look at the donation page in the newsletter, you may think that there is not much support for things like Meals on Wheels. But, what is reflected in the newsletter are donations that are designated specifically for Meals on Wheels. Please know that our programs with the greatest need receive funding from all other undesignated sources of funding. For example, Meals on Wheels clients receive a meal regardless of their ability to pay. Other sources of funding: general grants, donations and fundraising activities help us to close the gap between designated revenue and expenses associated with Meals on Wheels. Another similar program is our transportation program. Our participants pay only $1 per ride. But the program is funded through all of the other funding sources. There are no programs or services provided by the NSC that do not rely on this diverse funding stream. More information about the Center can be found in our Annual Report. This report is posted on our website and is also available upon request. If you have questions about funding or fundraising efforts, please contact Carla Grygiel at cgrygiel@newarkseniorcenter.com or 302-737-2336 x115. Again, thank you for your generous support of the Newark Senior Center.

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL FITNESS

FROM MARK STIBICH, PH.D., YOUR GUIDE TO LONGEVITY. There are two basic principles to keep your brain healthy and sharp as you age: variety and curiosity. When anything you do becomes second nature, you need to make a change. Curiosity about the world around you, how it works and how you can understand it will keep your brain working fast and efficiently. Use the ideas below to help attain your quest for mental fitness. 1. Play Games Games are a wonderful way to tease and challenge your brain. spend 15 minutes or so, not hours. 2. Meditation Daily meditation is perhaps the single greatest thing you can do for your mind/ body health. It not only relaxes you, it gives your brain a workout by creating a different mental state. 3. Eat for Your Brain Your brain needs you to eat healthy fats. Focus on fish oils from wild salmon, nuts such as walnuts, seeds such as flax seed and olive oil. 4. Tell Good Stories Stories are a way that we solidify memories, interpret events and share moments. Practice telling your stories orally or in written form. 5. Turn Off Your Television The average person watches more than 4 hours of television everyday. Turn off your TV and spend more time living, connecting to others and exercising your mind and body. 6. Exercise Your Body To Exercise Your Brain Choose a variety of exercises to challenge your brain. 7. Read Something Different Books are portable, free from libraries and filled with infinite interesting characters, information and facts. Branch out from familiar reading topics. 8. Learn a New Skill Learning a new skill works multiple areas of the brain.

www.newarkseniorcenter.com

9. Make Simple Changes To really help your brain stay young, challenge it. Change routes to the grocery store, use your opposite hand to open doors and eat dessert first. All this will force your brain to wake up from habits and pay attention again. 10. Train Your Brain Brain training is becoming a trend. There are formal courses, websites and books with programs on how to train your brain to work better and faster. There is some research behind these programs, but the basic principles are memory, visualization and reasoning. Work on these three concepts everyday and your brain will be ready for anything.
