January 2021

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! For many, 2020 may have been the year to really see what is important to us. It gave us the opportunity to connect with those near and dear, many times in new and different ways. During this challenging time, studies have shown that older adults have actually adjusted better and have a better attitude than younger people. I see the resilience in our members as they make the most of each day.

The NSC Board and staff have made considerable efforts to try to keep members and staff safe and healthy. Even before the pandemic, in an effort to provide healthier air, the Center began to install air purification through bi-polar ionization throughout the facility. The Board gave approval to install these units throughout the building as an additional layer of safety. We have also used, and continue to use, a 90 day barrier against the virus on frequently touched surfaces. The product, BioProtect provides a microscopic shield on surfaces for 90 days. Additionally, staff and members continually sanitize surfaces as they enter various spaces throughout the Center. We also have an amazing cleaning crew that is constantly and thoroughly cleaning the building.

We are doing our best to provide a safe and accessible facility. Changes made over the past decade have enabled us to better serve our members. Thank you for what you are doing as you enter our facility to keep others safe and to be respectful of health concerns of our members. Wearing a mask properly will be required at the center for some time to come. I know that 2021 is going to be a wonderful year. Stay safe, be well and I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.

WINTER WEATHER

During the winter months we do our best to keep NSC open and accessible to our members. Please use your best judgement when deciding whether to come to the Center. Additionally, in light of COVID we are doing our best to safely provide programs & services to our community. When the Center does close, or there is a change to the programming, you can find information at: • www.newarkseniorcenter.com, • NSC's Facebook page, • calling the Center at 302-737-2336

AARP TAX AID PROGRAM

Options are being considered for safely preparing tax returns for members of our community. One option may be a drop off method – participants would complete the intake from, drop off documentation, then return to retrieve documentation and the finalized tax return. No in person contact will be permitted. Please look for final details in the February newsletter, our facebook page or website. Please keep in mind that only a limited number of people may be able to be served. Thank you for your understanding.

You can also sign up for email or text alerts on our website.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Congratulations to Charles Putnam NSC Member, Chales Putnam reached an incredible milestone last fall by donating an incredible 24 gallons of blood to the Blood Bank of Delaware.

Charles has been donating blood regularly (every 56 days) to the Blood Bank since 1998, but he actually started donating with another organization in 1962. Charles has O negative blood, making him a universal donor for red blood cells. This blood is often used in emergency situations when someone's blood type is unknown.

Meals On Wheels A Community Effort

The Meals on Wheels Program has always been a cornerstone of the Newark Senior Center. Delivering hot, freshly prepared meals to homebound seniors has always been a priority. When COVID forced the NSC to close, Meals on Wheels became an essential service. The demand for meals increased 63% from the previous year.

We have been delivering an average of 230 meals per day including bagged suppers since March 2020 and it has truly been a community effort. The food services staff have become essential employees, and our pool of volunteers has grown as people working from home have wanted to help their community.

The success of the MOW program hinges on many factors including; the dedication of the NSC staff, the large pool of volunteers, and the financial support from our community. You can support this effort and enjoy delicious soup from Newark restaurants by purchasing a ticket to our upcoming Empty Bowls event. See page 43 for more information.
