Dear Friends,

One of our members has said that the Newark Senior Center is like a hospital that treats loneliness. He is a regular in several of our card groups and really values the time he is able to spend at the Center with friends.

During the past three years many people have experienced loneliness and isolation on a whole new level. It is important to keep in mind that lonely or socially isolated people are more likely to be sick; loneliness is a bigger public health threat than obesity. Fortunately, our community provides many opportunities to fight loneliness. Most important - start with a plan. Take a look at the newsletter to plan activities throughout the week. I strongly believe that everyone needs a reason to get up and get dressed each day! Keeping your “loungewear” on all day should be a luxury, not a habit.

Consider coming to the Center and joining us for lunch. After a long hiatus, the menu is now being printed in the monthly newsletter on page 46. We have a wonderful kitchen staff offering a hot entrée, freshly made soups, and made to order sandwiches. There are many activities scheduled each day to offer physical activity, mental stimulation and socialization. We also have a library – join in on a challenging puzzle, borrow a book or magazine or use the computers. These all provide opportunities to connect with others.

Yojani and Chef Joey also work together to plan our socials. Please take a look at the Save the Date calendar on page 4. They do a great job with a special meal and entertainment. Another great opportunity to plan to join friends or make new ones.

Anika, our Social Services Director, coordinates our support groups. For many, support group may be an uncomfortable term – possibly think of it as a discussion group with a purpose. Gathering with peers in a comfortable place can provide immeasurable benefits.

We see new members each week at the Center. Please make them feel welcome, introduce yourself or invite them to join in an activity. We also have many longtime members – I invite you to try something new, broaden your horizons. One of my favorite times of the week is hearing the laughter coming out of the shuffleboard room. It really is wonderful to hear the joy that the company of others brings to the lives or our members.

Correction – The phone number for the Delaware General Assembly questions or concerns should be 302-744-4351.

Please Note

We are transitioning to a new database & software system. If you are expecting an email from NSC & you do not see it in your inbox, please check your junk and spam folders. If you still do not see it, please contact the office. Thank you.

Kate's Fitness Korner

As we age, our caloric needs decrease but have an increased need of nutrients and vitamins compared to younger adults. This is due to less physical activity, metabolism changes and loss of muscle and bone mass. Here are some special considerations you should take in account when planning your next shopping trip!

Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy on a daily basis improves diet quality as it includes a ton of naturally occurring nutrients and vitamins. For example, oranges have tons of Vitamin C to help build your immunity and milk has calcium to keep your bones nice and strong!

Most older adults don’t eat the required amount of protein during the day, especially adults over the age of 71. Eating protein can help prevent the loss of lean muscle mass and keep your body weight stable. Good sources of protein include lean (90/10 or 93/7) ground beef and turkey, chicken and seafood as well as peanut butter, protein shakes and eggs.

The ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease with age and use of certain medicines. Decreased levels of B12 can lead to fatigue, weak muscles, weight loss and irritability. To increase B12 absorption, make sure you eat fortified breakfast cereals, red meats, eggs, and fatty fish!

If you have any questions or would like a healthy recipe or two, stop by the fitness center and check out the recipe of the week!
