NEWARK SENIOR CENTER

E-mail:

Dear Friends,

The Newark Senior Center relies on the support of our community to fulfill our mission. It is during this time of year, and only once per year, that we ask our community to support the Center through the annual appeal. Many of our donors choose to support the Center throughout the year making donations on a monthly basis or making donations in honor of or in memory of important people in their lives. We are so grateful for the support of so many.

Donations help us to balance our budget but on a more personal level, donations help us to keep our programs and services affordable. Two very good examples of how donations can make a difference are in our transportation and food services programs.

Our transportation services are provided to the greater Newark area. The busses pick up individuals at their home and bring them to the Center and then return them home later in the day. The busses also take people shopping on Friday. The fee to members is $4 per ride, but the cost to the Center is closer to $10 per ride. This cost includes the bus drivers, fuel, insurance, maintenance and administrative costs. That shortfall is covered by donations, fundraising efforts and grants. We are so grateful to be able to provide an affordable source of transportation helping to prevent isolation.

Our Food Service Program is also heavily dependent upon donations, fundraising efforts and grants. Meals on Wheels are delivered to residents of our community regardless of their ability to pay. The average donation from MOW recipients is less than $2 per meal. The fee for our mid day meal at the Center is $5 per meal. The cost to produce those meals is approximately $11 per meal. That cost includes menu planning, food supplies, equipment maintenance, utilities, insurance and staffing. Although our meals are not free to our noontime meal “customers”, I am certain that anyone who has enjoyed lunch at the Center knows what an incredible value it is. But just as important is the opportunity to gather with friends instead of sitting at home alone.

Thank you for your consideration of support of the Center. We are so grateful to those who can provide financial support so that we can keep our programs and services accessible and affordable.

I hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday season. Please take a look at all of the wonderful opportunities at the Center this month coordinated by our amazing staff!

Happy Holidays,

Reminder – Please scan in or sign in every time you enter the Center. This is in addition to signing into each activity. We need this information for grant reporting purposes. If you need a new key fob, please visit the front desk. Thank you.

The Newark Senior Center is the first and only senior center in Delaware accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a division of the National Council on Aging.

BE ALERT FOR SCAMMERS & IMPOSTERS

Phony Invoices

Scammers can pose as 3rd party suppliers and send phony bills via email to some customers. The email asks you to click on a link within the message. It is suspected that, by clicking the link, your computer could be infected with a virus or malware.

Reloadable

Debit Cards

Scammers also call targted customers to tell them that their account is delinquent and that their service will be shut off for non-payment unless they purchase a reloadable debit card for a specific amount from a local retail store. Victims are then instructed to call the scammer's telephone number with their debit card's account and unique serial numbers. Once the scammer obtains this information, the value is downloaded, swept and stolen without a trace.

Yoga is one of the best ways to keep yourself feeling lively and healthy as you age! Slow and gentle yoga with a holistic approach that focuses on strength, balance, flexibility, bringing mobility to the joints and breath control. Poses, when practiced regularly, will contribute to improvement of physical strength, mental clarity and the cognitive connection to both. We will be doing standing poses and poses on the floor. Remember to bring your mat.
