Dear Friends,
Tis the Season --- of giving.
This season the Newark Senior Center has been working on a gift to our members. Our new software and program platform has allowed us to give the gift of making our programs more affordable, more accessible. Many of our long time participants are so appreciative of this simplified process – no more registration for each class, no more standing in line at the front desk to pay, no more trying to navigate the website. We also hope that this new platform will improve our ability to effectively communicate with members.
Jessica Feinberg, our Development Director and Katie Rivera, our Program Director have been working for many months on the development of this platform. We do know there will be bumps in the road. If you notice something that seems to be an issue, please bring it to our attention. It is only with feedback from staff and participants that we can really optimize the experience for everyone.
Since implementation on November 1st, we have received an amazing gift from so many of our members. We appreciate the patience you have shown as we navigate the new system. But just as importantly, so many of you have expressed your empathy as you too have had to deal with changes in technology over the years. For many of us, our experience started before computers were even an option. Slide-rules, fortran card decks and then Lotus were our introduction to this new world of technology. Now – we are navigating the universe in the palm or our hands. Truly amazing.
I have had conversations with many members about this transition. The good news, whether dealing with technology or any other life challenges. Here at the Newark Senior Center there is usually an actual person standing right in front of you to help resolve an issue. Thank you all for your gift of patience, understanding and of course your very generous spirit.
Happy Holidays to all.
Please Note
We are transitioning to a new database & software system. If you are expecting an email from NSC & you do not see it in your inbox, please check your junk and spam folders. If you still do not see it, please contact the office. Thank you.

Kate's Fitness Korner
by Kate Boe ger, NSC Fitness Center Manager
The holidays are filled with tradition, family, thankfulness, and of course food! Nutrition is very important, but remember to always keep a balanced lifestyle. Consuming proteins, complex carbohydrates, and key vitamins and minerals through different whole foods, fruits, vegetables will allow you to lead a healthier lifestyle. Nutrition and healthy eating will allow you to live longer, have healthier skin, teeth, and eyes, support muscle growth, boost immunity, maintain a healthy weight, and lower risk for cancer and other disease such as type two diabetes and obesity. One thing that is important to remember, is to allow yourself grace and times to indulge and enjoy your favorite holiday foods and make a comfort meal when you need it. Everyone deserves a break, and that is why balance is so important!
Hydration is Key: Drink half your body weight in ounces daily to feel hydrated and less bloated!
Consume Protein: consuming protein sources such as eggs, lean meats, seafood, poultry, beans, and lentils will allow you to maintain muscle mass and feel more energized.
Enjoy a Variety of Foods:
keep your diet interesting based on your personal preferences, financial needs, culture or tradition. Mixing up your protein source, using different sources for carbohydrates, and enjoying different snacks from time to time will help keep you motivated to continue eating healthier.

The Delaware General Assembly has finished a session during which we proudly passed numerous laws to provide assistance to seniors and improve your quality of life. We wanted to reach out directly to you to better inform you of some of these accomplishments and how they will help you.
• Relief Rebate: We approved a $300 relief rebate for residents to combat rising costs. If you haven’t received your check, please go to de.gov/rebate or call the Department of Finance at 302-577-8200 (press 1 for rebate information.)
• Healthy Delaware Families Act: Under our new paid leave law, full-time workers will be able to take leave to care for a senior in their immediate family who faces a serious illness.
• Senior Property Tax Credit: We restored the full senior property tax credit to $500.
• Funding for Senior Centers: We appropriated $9.5 million for senior centers and their various programs (such as Meals on Wheels) across the state, including $800,000 for the Newark Senior Center.
• Funding for Libraries: We funded $25 million for library projects in all three counties, providing for the construction of new facilities and renovations of existing buildings.
• Telehealth: We have made telehealth (via internet or phone) a permanent option for residents and expanded it to include licensed providers in other states.
• Test-to-Treat: Pharmacists can now order and perform tests and treat several ailments, including influenza and strep.
• Prescription Drug Costs: We have taken action to rein in the cost of prescription drugs, such as capping the cost of prescription insulin at $100 per month.
• Mental Health: Insurance companies are now required to cover annual behavioral health wellness checks in Delaware.
• In-Person Early Voting: This is the first year Delaware has offered in-person early voting. This allows residents to vote in person up to 10 days before Election Day.
• Clean Water for Delaware Act: Delaware has made historic investments in various projects to protect drinking water and address flooding and drainage concerns.
• Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC): Making Delaware’s EITC refundable will provide working families with financial relief on their income taxes.
We look forward to continuing to update you on our progress in the General Assembly in the coming months, and we ask that you don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. To get in touch, please call 302-734-4351.

THE ORPHAN TRAIN MOVEMENT OF 1854-1929
Wednesday, December 14th 10:00am
Presenter: Donna Aviles
Learn the history of this seventy-five year "social experiment"--now recognized as our country's first Foster Care System--which transported an estimated 250,000 homeless children from the streets of East Coast cities to farming communities of the Midwest in search of stable homes. This presentation includes the first person account of orphan train rider Oliver Nordmark who, in 1906, traveled with his younger brother from the Children's Village on Long Island to the small town of Bern, Kansas. Attendees will hear audio recordings of Oliver telling just what it was like to ride the orphan train and then be chosen by a childless farmer and his wife. Additional recordings include "life in the orphanage" and "living in a sod house on the Kansas prairie." The presentation concludes with a discussion of the importance of journaling one's own story, through oral history or personal narrative, as a means of preserving social history. Q&A is encouraged throughout the presentation as well as at the end. No Cost. Please register at the Reception Desk.
REASONS TO BELIEVE
Tuesdays, November 15th - December 20h 1 - 2pm
Presenter: Dr. Gerald Culley
Traditional faith is not in fashion these days. The media are filled iwth skepticism toward The Bible. We hear that a book compiled many centuries ago must be riddled with myth, legend, folktale, and outright fiction. To think that it's a reliable source of history is naive, and to make it the basis of a personal religious faith is pure folly. This is the 21st Century: an age of practical politics, personal computing, and social networking! But did you know...a hard look at this ancient book reveals that it is historically accurate, archaeologically supported and scientifically sound! No Cost. Please register at the Reception Desk.
