December 2021

Dear Friends,

We have hosted some amazing events this fall at the Newark Senior Center. Although we did not know if we would even be able to return to some of our favorite events, we are so grateful for the support of the community to make them a success.

Our Fall Flea Market returned after an absence since October 2019. Thanks to so many dedicated volunteers who helped do all the heavy lifting – and yes, I do mean that literally. We did not have our usual corporate volunteers or our university students. But we did have our amazing, reliable, dedicated, wonderful senior center member / volunteers. We could not have done it without you!

We are also very grateful to our incredible staff who continue to do their “normal” jobs even during the flea market month. Their efforts are truly amazing. Our local Lion’s Clubs also help to make the event a success by helping with meals and taking away the leftover items. Al O’Neill and his fellow Glasgow Lion’s members are kind enough to take 2 trailers full of items to benefit the people of Appalachia. We also hosted the Housing Expo in November. Our community partners were thrilled to have an opportunity to get out and meet people in person to share their products and services. Our members were also pleased to be able to meet with people in person to ask questions and find out about resources. The lobby was buzzing with activity.

As we close out this year, I continue to see what a wonderful community we serve. Please take a look at the Save the Date piece in the newsletter to stay current on upcoming events. We hope that as time progresses more people will feel comfortable returning to the Center. It is such a privilege to greet returning members and meet new ones. Thank you all for your support and your contributions of time, talent and treasure to our community. Happy Holidays,

If you become ill with COVID within 2 weeks of visiting NSC, please notify us at 737-2336 x115 or cgrygiel@newarkseniorcenter.com. Pre-registration for various activities allows us to conduct contact tracing if necessary.

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

4 PILLARS OF RETIREMENT (from a study done in partnership with Agewave and Edward Jones)

Pillar 1: Health – most adults spend 10 years in poor health - the

most feared condition is Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia

Pillar 2: Family – most adults don’t want to become a burden

on family, most are willing to offer financial assistance even if it negatively affects their future. 25% of older Americans have not discussed end of life preferences with anyone.

Pillar 3: Purpose – greatest source is spending time with loved ones. 89% of Americans feel there should be more ways for retirees to use their talents and knowledge for the benefit of others.

Pillar 4: Finances – the cost of healthcare is the most worrisome aspect of retirement.

Seasonal Affective Disorder As the clocks roll backward and the days slowly become shorter, it is not uncommon to feel a change in your behavior as well. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a mood disorder that occurs at the same time every year, when there is significantly less sunlight. Symptoms include a heightened feeling of anxiety or depression, extreme fatigue, and even weight gain.

To combat this feeling and feel happy year round, try these few tricks!

1. Get Into a Routine - establishing a daily routine is a great way to stay focused, motivated and in control while the sunlight changes. To start a routine, begin small and start going to bed at the same time every night and grow your routine from there! 2. Keep in Touch - make plans to meet up with

friends once every week, call your loved ones regularly, and stay social! Growing a support system around you is a great way to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness and keep you moving and focused.

3. Physical Activity - exercising for at least

20 minutes a day, three times a week has many benefits, one of which is the release of endorphins. Endorphins help reduce pain and boosts the feeling of happiness! If you find yourself eating a lot more during the day, exercise will help you stay in shape and burn off those extra calories that might be consumed throughout the day.

As always if you have any questions or are interested in joining the gym, please feel free to stop by the fitness center!
