Dear Friends,

One of my sons shared a Youtube video with me this weekend. You can view it if you go to Youtube and search for “the magic coffee table”. The video shows a conversation between a young couple. The wife is very frustrated by having to work all day and then come home to prepare dinner, do laundry, straighten, clean …. The husband says don’t worry and then shares a secret with her. Every time he puts dirty laundry in the basket, miraculously it is clean, folded and put away. She is just shaking her head and asks if he is crazy. He then goes on to tell her about the magic coffee table. No matter how much stuff he puts on it – by morning, magically it is all cleaned up. She just stares in disbelief. Some of you may also have a magic laundry basket, a magic coffee table, and maybe even a magic dishwasher. I laughed so hard when I saw this video but my husband didn’t get as much of a kick out of it as I did.

So why am I sharing this with you here? Many times I have commented that the senior center appears to function effortlessly. “Magically”, the rooms are clean and set up, supplies are available – think toilet paper and soap, instructors appear on schedule, lunch is served, busses arrive, the heat and A/C work…. I think you get the picture.

The Newark Senior Center only works because of the efforts of amazing individuals, working as a team. The team includes staff with over 235 years of combined service to the center, volunteers, members, community supporters, outside service providers, local contractors, so many individuals.

We are so pleased that you, new members and old, have chosen to be a part of the magic that makes this such as special place. Is it perfect? No, nothing is. The Center will continue to serve members of our community, to grow and to thrive.

Bus service available Monday - Friday Cost: $2/day

• Participants who would like to use the Newark Senior Center transportation system must register for a ride at least 24 hours in advance.

Newark Senior Center Board of Directors is composed of up to 18 members of our community. Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month (except July & August) at 5:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest.

Construction Update

We expect construction to be completed by the end of the year. This expansion will provide additional flexible space that will be used for exercise, enrichment, socials and lunch. We look forward to completing this project and having additional space for the wide array of programs offered here. We also look forward to continuing to serve the growing demand for our Meeting of Minds program. The west entrance and the Meeting of Minds patio entrance will not be accessible for much of the construction project.

August is National Eye Exam month, so let this serve as a reminder to schedule an appointment to get your eyes checked at least once a year!

As we age, so do our eyes and cataracts are one of the most common eye issues that individuals run into every year. You might hear the term being thrown around, but what exactly is a cataract? Our eye is broken up into two major parts, the lens which allows light to pass through into the retina that allows us to see the finer details of everyday life. Over time, a cataract forms when the proteins of the lens break down, which leads to a cloudy patch on the lens and blurred vision. Age is the main cause of cataracts, but smoking, drinking alcohol excessively, different medications, and diabetes & cardiovascular disease can increase your risk of developing cataracts.

To keep your eyes in tip-top shape, be sure to wear sunglasses when outside and get your eyes dilated every or every other year. If you suspect you might have the beginning stages of cataracts, talk to your optometrist at your next appointment to be on your way to seeing clearly again!

HEARING LOOP NOW AVAILABLE AT THE NSC. Please check with your hearing specialist to see if your hearing aid is equipped with an enabled t-coil. The hearing loop sends pure clear sound directly from the sound system to your hearing aid. The hearing loop is available in the center section of the Evergreen room and in Classroom 1.

MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERY

We are looking for regular or substitute drivers for several routes in the greater Newark area! Meals are delivered Monday through Friday and can be picked up between 10:30am-11am. Each route takes about an hour of your time. YOU can become a Meals on Wheels volunteer if you have a valid license, insured vehicle, and pass a background check. NSC delivers an average of 150 hot meals each day plus bagged suppers to homebound clients in the greater Newark area. YOU can help seniors continue to live independently in the community by delivering a healthy meal and friendly smile. Please, contact Maura Jongebreur for more information: 737-5747. GIFT SHOPPE VOLUNTEER

Volunteers handle sales of handmade consigned items. Volunteers are asked to work once or twice a month, 10 - 1. Stop in the shoppe to leave your name and number! Training provided.

MEETING OF MINDS PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for individuals to assist in our Meeting of Minds Program. Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 weekday/week from 9:30AM-2:15PM. As a volunteer for Meeting of Minds you can be a cheerleader, companion, and advocate! Volunteer responsibilities include assisting members with activities, creating a relaxing environment, and lunch set-up. RECEPTION DESK

We are seeking upbeat individuals with experience with computers and customer service to work at the NSC Reception Desk! Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one shift every other week. Shifts are weekdays from 9AM–12:30PM or 12:30PM–4PM. Volunteers are responsible for giving tours of the Center, answering the phones, and using the computer to register people for memberships, activities, and classes. TRAVEL

• Please sign up for trips as soon as possible and at least 40 days prior to the trip. Payments to the bus company and destinations are due & trips will be cancelled due to lack of registrations.

• You can register for trips in person or by phone, Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 3:00pm

• New trips cannot be registered for until the 1st of the month

• All trips depart from the North Entrance and are rain or shine

• Cancellation Forms are located at the Reception Desk & must be completed for ALL cancelled trips. Refunds will not be given for cancellations unless the seat can be resold. For trips costing less than $15 and ALL JITNEYS, refunds will be issued in the form of credits.

• Phone numbers & emergency contact information are required for all trip participants.

• Individuals requiring assistance – NSC offers a wheel-chair lift for Jitney Jaunts only – please notify Receptionist when you make your reservation. Individuals requiring assistance to meet basic needs must travel with a companion. A reservation must be purchased for the companion to ensure seating.

JITNEY JAUNTS

• Jitney Jaunts are local trips using the NSC bus & are limited to 16 passengers (12 person minimum). There are no tour guides on these trips.

• When dining as a group, please keep in mind that some establishments will include a gratuity of up to 18%. Every effort is made to provide individual checks, but some restaurants cannot accommodate this request. If this is the case, checks will be provided for tables of 4.

• Jitney Jaunts are for NSC Members only. All Jitneys leave & return to the Center. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Center.

• Payment in full is due at the time of registration. Phone reservations require credit card payment.

EXTENDED TRIPS

• Flyers are available in the lobby with full information on all the trips.

WHO WE ARE

We are a group of Senior Center members who like to help other seniors learn about technology. We are not a techie group, just volunteers who enjoy learning new things and helping others learn. We have over 200 members with varying levels of technology experience, many of whom are eager to help others.

WHAT WE DO

We train you on the use of lab resources, including document, photo and slide scanning; converting different types of video to a DVD or digital format. We also help with problems on devices (computer, tablet, camera, smartphone).

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer programs and classes for all levels of experience. Monday afternoon labs for club members offer oneon-one help with a more experienced club member. Thursday afternoon programs offer a variety of speakers on the latest technology. We also offer open lab sessions for Senior Center members on Mondays and Tuesdays.

HOW TO JOIN

You must be a member of the Newark Senior Center to become a member of the Technology Club. Stop by the computer lab when it is open and someone will provide you a brochure listing all the benefits and offer a membership form to complete. After you join, you will be offered classes, free instruction and free advice for your devices. You will also have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. HOW MUCH DOES MOW COST? Clients make a donation toward the cost of their meals based on their individual financial situation. Meals on Wheels staff work with clients to establish suggested donation levels. Qigong (pronounced "chee gung") is an ancient Chinese exercise that combines easy to follow movements with mental focus and breath. Qigong is now practiced around the world for mental and physical wellness. We will learn seasonal qigong exercises as well as set forms which can be performed seated or standing.

Meals On Wheels A Community Effort

The Meals on Wheels Program has always been a cornerstone of the Newark Senior Center. Delivering hot, freshly prepared meals to homebound seniors has always been a priority. When COVID forced the NSC to close, Meals on Wheels became an essential service. The demand for meals increased 63% from the previous year.

We have been delivering an average of 230 meals per day including bagged suppers since March 2020 and it has truly been a community effort. The food services staff have become essential employees, and our pool of volunteers has grown as people working from home have wanted to help their community.

The success of the MOW program hinges on many factors including; the dedication of the NSC staff, the large pool of volunteers, and the financial support from our community.

If you are on Medicare and have a Medicare Supplement, you can ignore signs in a doctor’s offices saying “This office does not accept [company name] insurance. Your bill is submitted to Medicare and then Medicare forwards the bill to your Medicare Supplement Plan for coverage. Depending on the type of Medicare Supplement you have, you may be responsible for annual deductible (Plan G) or the deductible plus there may be a $20 copay per visit or if the provider elects to charge 15% more than the Medicare approved amount, you could be responsible for that as well (Plan N). If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you may be required to use plan doctors and/or to obtain preapproval. Marketplace or employer insurance can have similar limitations. In those instances, you have to make sure that your insurance covers services by each provider that you deal with.”.

Construction Update

We expect construction to be completed by the end of the year. This expansion will provide additional flexible space that will be used for exercise, enrichment, socials and lunch. We look forward to completing this project and having additional space for the wide array of programs offered here. We also look forward to continuing to serve the growing demand for our Meeting of Minds program. The west entrance and the Meeting of Minds patio entrance will not be accessible for much of the construction project.
