August 2022

Dear Friends,

We all know that the Newark Senior Center is a very special place. As the first and only nationally accredited senior center in the state of Delaware, we have been recognized for: • A strong dedicated staff who work well together as a team • A strong corps of volunteers, • A dizzying array of programs • Strong leadership • A strong financial base with a model Development and Planned Giving program • An attractive, exceptionally well-maintained facility.

Over the years, we have taken great pride in updating and renovating the facility to meet the needs and demands of our community and programming. I know those of you who have been around for many years are very grateful for the programs, services, and the comfortable facility. But it is always very heartwarming to hear from some of our newer members who see this place with fresh eyes. One of our very new members commented to me about how wonderful everything here is but really wanted to commend me on the cleanliness of the facility. As you know, I can take little to no credit. I would like to recognize a very special individual who works tirelessly every day. Gabriella joined us just before the pandemic started. She has worked every day since to keep our newly renovated facility looking brand new. Gabriella does an amazing job and we are so happy to have her here each day. As the gentleman said, the restrooms are so clean, you would think you are in a hospital! Gabrialla approaches every chore with a smile. If you see her around the Center, please thank her for her hard work, dedication, and very pleasant nature. She is truly a treasure. Our therapeutic pool is one of the most appreciated features of the Center. Respondents to our member survey have shown an interest in the return of evening pool hours. This October, November, and December, we will be opening the pool on Monday and Thursday from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. This will be a trial program to see if there is enough interest to continue to staff these pool hours. Please help us to spread the word to those who may be interested in this opportunity. I hope you are all enjoying a safe summer.

Please look for the symbol next to programming with the focus of “Time to get your house in order!”

THE NSC DOES NOT SELL OR GIVE ITS MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Monday - Friday 10:00am - 1:00pm Welcome to the NSC Gift Shoppe! We thought you might be interested to know a little about us: The Gift Shoppe has been part of the Newark Senior Center for over 50 years. Our consignment shop offers only handmade items, and is open to the public. Crafters come from the Tri-State Area where we are known and respected as a place to find outstanding handcrafted items at reasonable prices. Consignment Day is the First Tuesday of each month. Crafters may bring their items for review by Shoppe Managers and they work together to determine the price of each item. Payment to crafters is once a month and 20% of all sales goes to the NSC.

We are fortunate to be staffed by volunteers who generously donate their time. We are most appreciative of their contributions to the continued success of the Shoppe. Without their help, the Gift Shoppe could not continue to exist.

All of Delaware is currently at a high risk and AARP will not allow us to schedule a class until (in our case) New Castle County's risk level comes down to moderate or low.
