Dear Friends,

Sitting at the front desk this morning, one of our volunteers remarked about what an amazing place the Center has become to so many people. The NSC provides social connections that serve as such a valuable support system. The Center provides the opportunity to be a participant in so many activities, from exercise classes to enrichment classes that cover a wide range of topics. One of the comments made by our accreditation review team was that the center offers “an almost dizzying array of programs”. There truly is something for everyone.

Many individuals have found purpose by providing more than 20,000 hours of volunteer service each year. Some of our volunteers utilize the talents and skills that they have learned or developed during their years of work. Others contribute by leading groups, taking responsibility and broadening their horizons while enriching the lives of others. Newark is a very rich and diverse community with many opportunities to get involved and feel connected to others. The Board and Staff at the Center appreciate all those who make this a tremendous community resource. For more than 50 years the Center has received strong support from so many in the greater Newark area who have really established a Center that provides a supportive community and endless opportunity.

A new organization in town, The Newark Partnership, is a community coalition dedicated to economic, cultural, aesthetic, environmental, and social enhancement of the City of Newark. One of the primary goals of this organization is to work together toward the common goal of enriching and improving the quality of life. I have been working with the Nonprofit Enhancement Committee since it’s inception. Our first project is a school supply drive to support our local classroom teachers. It is our hope that this simple effort will bring together individuals, businesses, and the nonprofit community to support those who do so much to nurture the children in our community. The Newark Senior Center will serve as a collection site. Please consider donating: glue sticks, washable or dry erase markers, boxes of tissues, hand sanitizer, #2 pencils or blunt tip scissors. Donations will be accepted from August 12th – 22nd. There will be other donation sites around town. Please go to www.thenewarkpartnership.org for more information. I know we have a very generous community and sincerely appreciate your support for this effort. We can make a difference! Please Note: If you have a larger vehicle you are welcome to park in the rear of the building where there are double spaces on the blacktop area. Please do not park on the grass. Thank you for your cooperation.

INTERMEDIATE WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP

Last Classes: Mondays, August 5th & 12th 5:30 - 7:30pm Instructor: Bruce Simmons This summer, I am creating an “Intermediate watercolor workshop for those who want to continue building their capability and who have previously attended at least one of my 5-session workshops. Focus will be less on learning basic skills, and more on where and when to apply those skills. Subject matter will be principally of your choosing. Ad hoc demos will be more aligned with your needs. The intent is that this intermediate workshop will both support your artistic interests and help develop your watercolor skills. Member cost: $5, Non-Members: $15 About the Instructor: Bruce began painting with watercolors soon after graduating college. In part it was a way to balance against the "left brain" demands of the occupation he had chosen, but more than that, he was attracted by the lumenosity the medium could impact, particularly to the sky & water. Retirement has offered the opportunity to persue watercolorwith a renewed passion. His objective is to continue developing abilities both to see and to render, while also sharing what he has learned with others.
