Dear Friends,

It really is unbelievable how time flies. April – Flea Market month is upon us. The Flea Markets in April and October along with our Annual Appeal are our major fundraising events. Each year these efforts raise just under $150,000 to support Center operations. Please keep in mind the annual operating budget for the Newark Senior Center is just under $2,000,000 a year. As you can see, these efforts make up just a portion of our revenue. Some other sources include, grants, donations, fees, and memberships. Over the years we have always tried to keep our memberships and fees as affordable as possible. For many who choose to participate in the more social activities, the only fee is the annual membership fee which has been $33 per year for many years. We are so grateful for the donations from our generous supporters who help us make ends meet.

The Flea Markets rely on the support of so many people from our community who donate good saleable household items, clothes, jewelry … really almost anything. For details, please see page 41. We also rely on volunteers throughout the month who sort through donations, volunteers who help set up and staff the sale and of course, just as important – our loyal shoppers. We are always looking for new volunteers to help with this massive undertaking. Please help us to spread the word to friends, family and neighbors. The Flea Markets are a tremendous opportunity to pick up almost anything, for some it is a treasure hunt, for others it is a great opportunity to shop for necessities like clothing and household items. Thank you to all who will make this a wonderful Flea Market.

We are getting closer to the start of our facility expansion. The main part of the expansion will be to construct an addition over the existing patio space outside of the Evergreen Room. The expansion will provide additional dedicated program space as well as free up some space throughout the Center to allow the return of some pre-pandemic favorites. We look forward to continuing to serve our members as well as the greater Newark community.

The second part of the renovation will be to expand our Meeting of Minds program. The program provides socialization and stimulation for participants as well as much needed respite for caregivers.

As we proceed with this project, we may need to relocate, condense or even cancel some programming. We always try to minimize the impact on programming but certainly appreciate your understanding as we work with our Contractor to complete this project as soon as possible.

Enjoy Spring!

HOW TO RECOGNIZE DECEPTIVE MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT PLANS AND WHERE TO TURN IF YOU THINK YOU ARE A VICTIM

Monday, April 24th 10:00am

Presenter: Trinidad Navarro, Insurance Commissioner for the State of Delaware

As your Insurance Commissioner and a lifelong public servant, I take the protection of our residents, especially our most venerable, very serious. I am particularly concerned with the recent increase in Medicare Supplement Plans that are advertised on television, in the mail, on the Internet and sometimes door to door.

You may recognize commercials for Medicare Supplement Plans featuring William Shatner, Joe Namath and Jimmie “JJ” Walker. The ads are sometimes misleading and can have serious consequences for seniors in our communities and throughout our State. Many of these plans are not offered in Delaware, they do not produce what they promise and, in some cases, will disenroll you from Medicare.

Let’s talk about what to look for in deceptive advertising, how to avoid it and where to turn if you think you are a victim. A member of the Delaware Medicare Assistance Bureau will be on hand to answer questions and can schedule free one on one counseling with a trained volunteer near you. The session will be followed by open period for all your insurance questions. No Cost. Register at the Reception Desk.

1. Coat 8-oz. ramekin or custard cup with cooking spray. ADD egg, 1 Tbsp water, spinach and mushrooms; Beat with fork until blended.

2. Microwave on HIGH 30 seconds; stir. Microwave for another 30-45 seconds until the egg is almost set.

3.Top with cheese and tomatoes. Enjoy immediately!
