elcome to our first edition for 2018! How do we cultivate daily gratitude, so it’s more than just a cliché – it’s a transformational tool which becomes the antidote for judgement? This is the interesting topic many of our contributors explore this month… As our former cover girl Kim Serafini shared: “When we feel deep appreciation and a genuine sincere thankfulness, a couple of processes happen physiologically. We get an increase in oxygen absorption in our cardiovascular system. That is medical proof. So it’s a healthy emotion to indulge in and we get an increase in collagen production. What gratitude does is, it starts a cascade of chemicals so that there is a cocktail your body is being saturated with through the endocrine system.” While there is debate about whether



gratitude is considered an emotion or more a way of being, there can be no denying, it holds the keys to a life of ease the more it is practised. Gratitude is an expression of how we are naturally as beings, it’s a high vibrational state if we choose it in more moments. In fact, Dr Emoto’s gratitude experiment showed that when a group of people gathered to ‘send gratitude’ to a glass of Tokoyo tap water (which didn’t form crystals under the microscope), the group transformed the molecular structure of the water to form a symmetrical crystalline shape. It’s exciting to reflect on the potential for change around the globe when we practise thankfulness and be the energy of gratitude. We are honoured to have internationally renowned healing pioneer Vianna Stibal gracing our cover this month, and enjoy the inspiring interview from Talitha Talarek, on page 12-13.

y name is Micheline Andrews and I am a qualified Integrative Nutritional Health Coach, completing studies at both the ‘Institute of Integrative Nutrition’ and ‘Health Academy Australia’. In addition to coaching, I am an author, educator and bone broth advocate. I thrive on helping individuals create healthy habits so they become naturally embedded into their lifestyle. I love giving people the confidence to turn their desire into action. By guiding clients to overcome little problems and loosen their grip on past habits, I help them see a much wider range of practical options and manageable solutions. I received a personal wake-up call when a significant trauma changed my life. Looking back, it was my turning point. During this time, I discovered the healing elixir of bone broth. I took it to the next level by making the ground-breaking decision to try dehydrating it into a powder form. It worked! This was the beginning of my own business, ‘Broth of Life’. I was the first person in the world to sell broth in powdered form and I soon gained world-wide trademarking. Business boomed. In fact, it grew so quickly I couldn’t keep up! I soon sold it so I could focus on other projects. My passion about the benefits of bone broth will always remain deeply


embedded in everything I do. It has guided me to increase my knowledge of gut health and has made me aware of the incredible healing the body is capable of when provided with the right tools. As I was finishing my studies, I coauthored ‘Sandwich Free, Packet Free Lunchboxes’ which is currently on its second print run. Fish Pie with Mixed Potato Topping RECIPE MICHELINE ANDREWS

Ingredients: 30g fish fillet (cut into large chunks) 150g prawns (de-shelled, pre-cooked) 4 spring onions chopped 50g tapioca or arrowroot flour 1 cup milk of choice 1½ cups broth 2 tbsp butter or ghee ½ lemon zest and juice 1 tbsp dill (dried or fresh) 1 tsp dried parsley TOPPING: 6 medium size potatoes (grated) 1 large sweet potato (grated) 2 tbsp broth fat 50g cheddar cheese grated 1-2 large tomatoes sliced Salt and pepper

Method: Pre-heat a hot oven. 1. In a large saucepan melt the butter/ ghee. 2. Add in the spring onion, sauté until soft. 3. Take off the heat and add in the flour, stirring through. 4. Gradually add in the milk and broth stirring with a whisk. 5. Place back onto the heat and simmer for a few minutes, the sauce should thicken. 6. Add in the fish, prawns, herbs, zest, juice and season with salt and pepper. 7. Bring to boil whilst stirring then remove from heat. 8. Pour into a large baking dish.

9. Season with salt and pepper. 10. Grate the potatoes; squeeze in a clean tea towel to remove the moisture/ juice. 11. Season with salt and pepper. 12. Melt broth fat in a frypan then turn off heat. 13. Stir in the potato until the fat has fully covered them. 14. Sprinkle over the top of the pie. 15. Sprinkle over the cheese. 16. Top with sliced tomato. 17. Place on a large flat baking tray to stop any spillages getting in your oven. 18. Bake for approximately 30 minutes. The top will be golden and the pie bubbling.

Ingredients: 250g cherry tomatoes 1 onion 2 carrots 2 cucumbers 1 cos lettuce or bunch of silverbeet 1 avocado 1 lemon 1 tbsp Banaban organic coconut oil 2 cups of Nutra Organics vegetable low FODMAP broth 1 cup Lotus quinoa A pinch of Planet Organic cracked pepper A pinch of Nirvana Organics Himalayan crystal salt 2 Planet Organic bay leaves

Method: 1. Wash the tomatoes, carrots, cucumber and lettuce. 2. Then, slice the onion, add to a frying pan along with the coconut oil and cook on a low-medium heat until caramelised (about 30 minutes), stirring occasionally. Once caramelised and cool, transfer to the salad bowl. 3. While the onion is caramelising, rinse the quinoa and place in a saucepan with the veggie broth (prepare as per instructions on packet), bay leaves, salt and pepper. Cover and cook on a lowmedium heat for 20 minutes or until cooked through, stirring with a fork occasionally. Allow to cool, remove the bay leaves and add to the salad bowl. 4. Then, slice the tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and grate the carrots and place in the salad bowl. 5. Toss to combine and serve with a scoop of avocado and squeeze of lemon juice.

common New Year’s resolution for many people is to get their body back into shape at the gym. But just because you can’t physically see your colon, doesn’t mean it can’t benefit from a makeover too! It’s easy to look at our bodies and see if we’ve put on a few kilos over the holiday season, but it’s harder to know when your digestive system needs a tune-up. Here are the top signs to look out for so that you can reboot your gut: 1. YOUR MOOD IS A BIT FLAT Feel like you’ve lost a bit of your spark, even though the sun is shining outside? If so, it’s probably time to hit reset on your gut. When bad bacteria in your colon outnumbers the good, our mood can also be affected, sometimes leading to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Considering up to 95% of your body’s feel-good chemical serotonin is produced in your gut, it’s easy to see how an imbalance in your gut bacteria can directly lead to

an imbalance in your mood. Help boost your mindset by stocking up on fermented foods like sauerkraut and kombucha to ensure good bacteria blooms in your gut garden. 2. YOU’VE GOT TEENAGE SKIN And I don’t mean you’ve got a youthful complexion, I mean your skin is breaking out in ways it hasn’t done for years! re-set your body’s age?



hat if bodies didn’t have to age, anyway? What if you didn’t have to lose vitality, youth or health as each year passed? And what if your mouth, teeth and gums were a key to that? Our bodies were designed to selfregenerate, and heal. Why is that for most people, deterioration starts at around age 30? WHAT ELSE IS POSSIBLE? There are body systems that, when fully activated, respond to incoming information – such as a tooth becoming worn beyond repair – that then signal the body to produce a replacement tooth, skin cell or bone or whatever is required. Bodies are naturally designed to move towards growth and renewal! These systems are not just for tooth repair and replacement, but gums, bone, hair – in fact all the organs and systems of the body. Babies learn by placing things in their mouths – their fingers, toes, dirt, rattles – anything they can grab! They have very sensitive receptor systems! The mouth is a major receiving place in the body. But what do all good parents do and say? “Yuk! Spit that out! You don’t know where that’s been! Here suck this!” ‘This’ being a plastic substitute (dummy or pacifier or teething ring). Most parents will limit what ranges of foods, tastes and textures and quantities a baby might choose. This can be cultural or religious but also based on belief systems about what’s right and appropriate.

None of these things may have anything to do with what the baby body actually requires! This is the age when the body is developing the receptor/responder systems – building the body’s capacity to generate and create vitality and health for the future. ianna is the founder of the ThetaHealing® technique (and author of seven books published by Hay House). This technique is seeing people unite in harmony; people of all different races, religions and from all walks of life. A little over 24 years ago Vianna was working from a little office in Idaho Falls, USA. At the time, she was offering readings, massage and naturopathy, and then one day she personally experienced a spontaneous healing, of a nine-inch tumour in her right leg. She found that healing could occur by connecting to that same place from where she was doing the readings – she had found a way to take the brain down to a dream state (a theta brainwave) and have miraculous healings from it; it was also a way to connect with the soul, and with the energy of creation. In that deep state of meditation, it also opens the person up to divinely inspired ideas and opportunities. “It helps you discover your true motivations and it helps to program you for success in your life with love and health and joy. It’s just freakin’ cool,” says Vianna. With this discovery, people started showing up from all around the county requesting appointments, often saying that God had sent them. Soon she had worked with hundreds upon hundreds of people. Vianna knew that if it was possible for one person to witness and experience such profound results, then surely others could do it too. It wasn’t long before people started asking to learn what it was that she was doing, so in 1998, Vianna taught her first classes in the United States. This was her promise to the 12

Creator, to share the knowledge. It was found that the technique was both easily learnt and taught and so the ripple effect began. Vianna mentions that her connection with God has always been of importance having spoken to God since she was just four years old. Faith and miracles were a natural part of her upbringing; she would have miraculous experiences and had great trust in faith healing. She would watch her family for inspiration; her mother being a woman of great faith and having once had a father in-law that was an amazing hands-on healer. Her belief system was in support of divine possibilities. ThetaHealing is well known for the four-level belief (core, genetic, soul and history) and feeling work with instant results often being experienced when changes are made to the subconscious mind. “Everything in ThetaHealing is a realisation of working with other people and going up and asking the Creator for answers. So everything in ThetaHealing is channelled work. The Creator showed me there were four levels. And I started working on the levels because we create


our own reality and if you really take that step and really start delving into yourself, you realise the key to your own life is already within you,” Vianna says. This technique which invariably saved her own life, time and time again (including the healing of her heart after being told that she had congestive heart failure) and has assisted thousands of others, is more than a healing modality. Vianna explains, “You know I watched babies that were born blind that were able to see. I have watched children that were supposed to die, live and become healthy. So I know that we are part of an energy of ‘all that is’ and we create our own reality. I am a living proof – I have had so many things happen in my life. I have watched sickness heal, but I have watched people’s hearts heal and I know that we need to realise that every person matters. We all matter. “The real major healing in the world is realising that we are part of something, that we are connected to ‘all that is’. You know the healing is just the frosting on the cake. Once we teach people that we really can be part of connecting to that special, spiritual energy, that we are a part of, and that we can actually use it in our lives, you know that’s the key and that’s what actually makes the world change – when people actually know purpose and actually feel part of the all. So healing is cool, it gets people’s attention, but ThetaHealing is teaching us that we are a part of all that is, and we have a divine purpose, and we can be in love, we can actually have a family, and have things, because we are part of a divine source. So ThetaHealing is probably the most incredible miracle in my life. “I think that if people stop and are silent for just a moment, they would

realise they are here for something greater, I don’t think it’s uncommon, I think it’s normal, and I think that we are sparks of God and it’s time to realise and wake up.” The ThetaHealing technique is a growing modality, with an estimated half a million certified practitioners and instructors in over 150 countries. It’s a technique which is continually evolving with more information being channelled and courses being created constantly. ThetaHealing has been trademarked to protect its practitioners and instructors and to bring them more respect. There were some rumours started a few years ago saying that ThetaHealing

was ‘anti-doctors’ but that’s not true at all. Vianna says, “We work with a lot of doctors around the world. We work with a lot of people in every walk of life. or the last 20+ years working with the Millennium Children®, I have had parents say they wished their child would be grateful. But what does that mean? And maybe the child is already being grateful. What I mean by that is children express their emotions and their thankfulness and appreciation in unique ways. It is us adults whom teach children to show gratitude the way we need. It is a bit like Gary Chapman, the author of ‘5 Love Languages’, explains that each of us feels loved in a specific way; the same applies to gratitude. As children learn by example, how grateful are parents or teachers towards children when the child is misbehaving, yelling back, having a temper tantrum or being sworn at? In a child’s mind they are grateful that you are being you and that you love them unconditionally even when they are having a melt down, no matter what age they are. What if this melt down was an awakening for the adults to learn gratitude is an art and act of loving. In that awakening,

what reflection is the child for you? What is it bringing up for you? Is it bringing up pain from your childhood, or is it triggering you to really feel your emotions?! The Millennium Children® access their innate wisdom at all times. This is a connection to absolute love and in that consciousness, children are thankful and grateful. Look at a baby, they cry, they demand food and they need to be held, as they innately know they are pure love and they are grateful to you as their guardian. They show this by being in your life. As I mentioned before (and please see my website), gratitude is the act and art of loving. When we as adults, parents, carers, teachers, child care workers and guardians of children remember this, that is when children will know what gratitude is too. What if the parent and teacher said to the child, “I am so grateful you entered my life” or “I am grateful you got angry at me as this helped me to learn you don’t feel like you are being heard”. The

children would learn the adult language that they are to use. Remember we are teaching them how to be grown up. It is time to shine your brilliance and be the example of what is possible for the children. nitially gratitude became a practice I reminded myself of every morning following the loss of a teenage son to suicide. As my grieving process passed through, I experienced a deep awakening to presence and this changed. Gratitude became a natural and effortless arising. I share here a piece from my memoir: ‘Shining through: From Grief to Gratitude’. Gratitude has become my best friend. She gently picks me up when I’m feeling tired or despondent. She inspires me when I might lose faith in the corrupt human world of greed and violence and reminds me that everything is perfect. She softly nudges me in the forest when doubt tries to enter my mind. She whispers sweet songs to me on the wind when injustice tries to separate me from the divine. Gratitude smiles at me from the colourful faces of the flowers in my garden. She sings to me through birdsong, and brings me to laughter

through a child’s innocent curiosity. She smiles at me through a stranger’s face, and reminds me of unconditional love through the eyes of every mother. Despite the cruelness in this world, she keeps reminding me there’s always beauty in Mother Nature’s perfection. She whispers words of wisdom when I’m tired through my loved one’s lips. She offers me fragrance through herbs and wild-flowers. When the sky clouds over, gratitude comes to me as a rainbow that brightens my world again. She shows me strength through humble gatherings of inspired hearts, ready to sing with open hearts. With gratitude as my best friend, I feel lighter. I feel whole because she is never far from my side. If I ever falter, gratitude picks me up and reminds me what a blessed life I lead. She walks by my side, sharing her inspiration with flowers of loving kindness and hope that grow in the pavement cracks on life’s colourful


path. Gratitude inspires me to lift my head high, and to walk in the beauty offered by life. Life’s challenges have pushed me to seek truth while learning to ride the wave of the eternal presence. For without darkness there would be no light. Without challenge we may never reach our full potential. I have lost my footing and fallen many times, and like a wave, life has come crashing down on top of me, seeking to drag me under, but gratitude has always been alive in my heart. Her presence has helped me embrace self-acceptance, which has allowed me to love myself – and love you better too. I feel the gentle strength of presence now. It’s been tempered by my shared grief and loss, from which has grown a greater capacity for love, kindness, and compassion. Life is what it is and it is one hell of a ride. And for this I am grateful.

e don’t hear people talk about it very often, but when you’re giving thanks for all the blessings in your life, make sure you’re not just handpicking the ‘good stuff’. It’s just as important – if not, more so – to express gratitude for all the challenges you’ve experienced. After all, these are the moments that have helped you to grow, learn, and become stronger and wiser. We all experience pain, anguish, grief, confusion (and the list goes on), and of course, it can be uncomfortable and not so nice to deal with. These experiences however, push us to learn more about ourselves, to make changes in our lives where they’re needed, and to evolve on so many levels, so why on earth would we discount them

by eliminating them from what we’re thankful for? Let’s take last year, for example. If you had experienced a year completely free of challenges, with no conflict, no change, no moments where you were forced to look within for the answers, then I’d imagine that you’d be feeling quite stagnant right now. If, on the other hand (like most of us), you’ve found yourself questioning situations or relationships, been amongst conflict, or felt sadness, anger, confusion, and so forth, then it’s absolutely vital that you take these experiences as learning opportunities, and blessings that are helping you to evolve on a soul level. These challenges in life are all part of the human experience, and

it’s important to be able to view every experience as essential for our growth – whether it has been uncomfortable or not. So, if your 2017 (or any other year for that matter) wasn’t as pleasant as you would have liked, please don’t fall into the trap of wishing the year away as if it never existed – this will not help you in any way. Instead, use this pain, confusion, grief (whatever it may be) as motivation to make the changes necessary for your soul’s growth. Be grateful for these experiences that have helped you to move forward with your life. Give thanks for the challenges, for they are often vital in propelling you towards your greatest self. Can reflecting upon, expressing or embodying ‘gratitude’ – be beneficial?




he answer is a resounding, “Yes”. ‘Gratitude’ is generally regarded as a mental attitude characterised by the quality of being thankful and the readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. It is, by definition, altruistic (it does not expect anything in return) and consistent with the open, honest and unconditional extension of love. We have all, undoubtedly, experienced incidental moments of the blissful effects of being immersed in this graceful state, but we can reap considerable benefits by consciously expressing gratitude. For those who connect with their spiritual essence – an eternal multidimensional manifestation of the Divine – through Past and Between Life Regressions, there is much to draw upon in engaging in grateful or thankful thoughts. They will have an appreciation for the thoughts of Buddha, who spoke of “gladdening the heart” by expressing gratitude for events – irrespective of whether those events were considered ‘good’ or ‘bad’ – that

had prompted the pursuit of the spiritual path. Similarly, they will understand the commentary by the great Sufi poet, Rumi, who overtly spoke of the relationship between gratitude and our higher spiritual essence in the following passage: “Thankfulness brings you to the place where the Beloved lives.” Such sessions can be extraordinarily transformative. Even without such experiences, however, we can all access memories of those times where gratitude and thankfulness has swelled our hearts – including those noted by the great Stoic Philosopher and Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, where, “[I]n an expression of true gratitude, sadness is conspicuous only by its absence”. Modern science, too, is showing that even turning our attention to thoughts of gratitude can have profound positive physical and emotional effects – research indicates positive effects related to issues including: blood pressure; anxiety; depression; stress; performance enhancement; pain management;

cognitive functioning; emotional selfregulation; and resilience. How easy can it be? The HeartMath Institute suggests the following: (i) breathe in and out ‘of your heart’; (ii) inhalations and exhalations of 5 seconds each; (iii) focusing on specific memories and feeling of love and gratitude while breathing as described; and (iv) undertake this process three times a day for three minutes on each occasion. This technique will reduce stress and have positive health effects. It seems to be a Universal Truth – being grateful is good for us – and in one way or another, it has been calling out to humanity through the Ages. Perhaps it is time for us all to open our hearts to that message and if we find that few recognise our true essence, we can at least honour it and be thankful that it dwells within. How to

have it all



o have gratitude is everything! To feel grateful for things we’ve received or for the small things that occur, that’s gratitude. It is also how we relate to others, when we see ourselves connected to something bigger than we are ourselves, for example the magnificent planet we live on. We become so busy with life, with so many pressures and stresses, that we often don’t take the time to stop and realise what we do have, much less express gratitude. Our instantgratification lifestyle creates the environment from where it’s easy to be dissatisfied and disillusioned. It’s as if people are part of a mammoth marathon and it has become all about their own needs, climbing over the top of others, without bothering to say thank you.

It does not take much observing to see that people who express gratitude are happier and their relationships at work and at home have a positive impact on their levels of self-worth and self-acceptance. Gratitude’s positive effects truly are long-lasting. Those of us who do remember to send acknowledgements, definitely improve in our manner towards others. We feel energised and have a great sense of knowing we have made someone else feel appreciated. No matter how old we are, a good dose of gratitude can benefit us throughout our lives. In being young or growing old, there are lots of times when frustration and poor communication result in being ungrateful, and not appreciating the

people who are helping us along the way. Choosing to be thankful, to have gratitude for the life we have and how we are being cared for in one way or the other, we will find ourselves less likely to dwell upon the negative side of life. There are often situations that cannot be changed, things may not turn out how we would like things to be, but if we constantly choose to remind ourselves about the values of gratitude over ungratefulness and focus on the positives, life will always deal aces instead of spades. Without gratitude for breath, there is nothing. Teach your children gratitude for the smallest of things and they will be happy adults for life.

Saying yes to healing and


living vibrantly

n 2013 I was given my 3rd diagnosis of cancer. The news of Triple Negative Breast Cancer completely devastated me physically, mentally and emotionally. However, I felt I had the skills and support to get through, and followed a regime of alternative therapies, meditation, diet and supplements alongside surgery and nearly 12 months of chemotherapy and radiation. Finally the oncologist said that there was no remaining evidence of cancer. Life resumed at a cracking pace back to normal routines. Although clinically well, I felt flat and emotionally fragile. Even short-term future plans were impossible to think about, as I felt that my body was going to fail me and my life could be cut short. Alternative therapies helped but the feeling would return. Fortunately, I recently experienced Matrix Reimprinting with Donna Laker which was absolutely life-altering. I have been amazed at how free and unburdened I feel. ave you paused today, to consciously give thanks for someone or something? For some aspect of life that enriches your personal tapestry? When did you last marvel at that inconvenient pelting rain… knowing that it helps feed so many through both cropping and hydration? When stuck in the daily grind, plodding along, just trying to get through, it is altogether too easy to be so blinkered that we do not think to share with others just how much their thoughts and actions are appreciated. It is altogether too easy to focus on what else needs to be done to get finished, to just power through… The change of year brings many reviews with it. For me, currently, I am grateful for the work of so many researchers over the decades, and people like the amazing Fred Hollows, and all their patients, who now have given me the benefit of their experience,

How heart states can return you to you WORDS JANET McGEEVER


t’s easy to be grateful when things are going well. We have different glasses on. We are in a relaxed state. Things look beautiful to us. People seem wonderful. But it’s not always like this. Sometimes life throws us curveballs that prevent easy access to heart states such as appreciation, love and gratitude. It’s times when you feel like you are on your knees from a heartbreaking sadness, frozen or fleeing from a seemingly inescapable fear, flooded with an anger that just won’t leave you, when it is the hardest to be grateful. Heart states like gratitude help bring coherence to the autonomic nervous system – that’s the sympathetic (fight and flight) and the parasympathetic (rest and digest, restorative) nervous system. Therefore, it’s very life-giving to feel these heart states. But what if you are in the grip of strong emotions and you just can’t get

passage to even a little bit of gratitude? When I’m feeling like this, I go simple. I go to the body. I’m grateful I have eyes that see, for some do not. I’m grateful I have ears to hear, for some do not. I’m grateful that I can smell the intoxicating sweetness of jasmine in the summer heat, for some cannot. I’m grateful that I can taste and feel the smooth silky texture of melting chocolate, for some do not. I’m grateful that I have a voice and can speak loving kindness to my loved and dearest ones, or tell the truth that can deepen intimacy between us, for some do not. I’m grateful that I have arms to hold another with love, to carry children, to express and gesticulate with, for some do not. I’m grateful I have hands and fingers to write, to draw, to type, to touch the silken skin of a new born

ll this ‘New Year’, ‘new beginnings’ stuff can be an incredible support to help us move towards our hearts’ yearnings. It can also be an invitation to judgement, comparison and ‘not enoughs’. Let’s remind ourselves that while life is short, we also have time and it’s okay to be in a different place than we expected. Rather than being hard on ourselves, comparing or measuring where we think we SHOULD be, why not simply revisit our definition of success? What is success to you? Right now, success for me is feeling connected to my own heart and life purpose. It is listening and courageously showing up to contribute, even when it’s scary or inconvenient. Success is going to bed and falling asleep with a sense of peace and gratitude. It’s watering seeds of forgiveness, both for myself and others. It’s being truthful, not deceiving myself and being determined

to build a deepening friendship with all the aspects of my being. My definition of success is also in constant change and flow. I feel successful in my life, not because I fit the mold of what the world says is enough, rather because I genuinely like and appreciate myself. I am a good human, I don’t always get it right, yet I am kind, considerate and committed to learning. Success for me isn’t what happens when the world lavishly praises me or recognises some achievement. Success unfolds in my quiet moments: when I am alone and I face a fear; when I show up to greet the world (even though a part of me may feel safer at home); when I reach out to a stranger at the supermarket; or I hold eye contact and smile. or every moment is special – it is a gift, not a given. When you live your life with gratitude everything from the twinkle in the eye, a feather floating through the air, the smell of a rose, a laugh of a child, to the heaviest hardest experience you have been through or witnessed can hold value. You are constantly presented with gems to enrich your soul and evolve you on your path – whether you recognise them at first or not. The key here is to elevate the shift. Having held space for and worked with thousands of people, it is recognised that the healing often will take place and the person finds closure once ‘reason’ has been found and unconditional love fills every cell of their being. This can be a big step for someone who is healing from a traumatic experience. So to see people shift from blame and victim mode and move into empowerment, to co-creator is astounding.

In that moment they take their life back. For some it may seem impossible from where they are sitting to be grateful for an experience which hurt them deeply, but with the assistance of a technique such as ThetaHealing® – it can become very possible in a very little amount of time. It is often said that when people hit rock bottom or someone close to them passes they reach for the meaning of life, they shift out of taking things for granted to actually caring. Gratitude for learning, understanding and for the people in my life. It’s gratitude that kept me rising to the bigger picture or seeing it. usinesses and individuals who run group classes will now be able to manage and promote their services via mudputty, an online community that’s launching on the Sunshine Coast. This project aims to connect local class hosts with people who love to learn and invites anyone who organises group classes or activities to join. I started mudputty because I saw so many people running amazing classes on the Sunshine Coast, but struggling to fill them: everything from fitness groups and outdoor activities, to kids’ programs, music and art classes. The problem isn’t that people don’t want to attend these classes – it’s that they don’t know they exist. People put flyers on noticeboards or posts on Facebook to promote their activity, but it’s hard for busy people to find that information. I want to bring together a like-minded community, so

class hosts can access customers who are looking for what they offer. I am a busy mother of two who discovered that the best activities in my area – for my kids, myself and family – were the hardest to find. I also saw fantastic teachers struggling to fill their classes because class marketing and administration was too time-consuming. And so mudputty was conceived and it’s a central place to connect people who want to teach with those who love to learn. Mudputty takes care of all the marketing and administration for anyone who organises group activities. Through an online platform, it’s easy for class hosts to fill their classes, receive payment, and connect with class attendees. While catering for existing businesses that run group classes or activities, mudputty is also open to people who want to share a passion or hobby, even if they’ve never taught a class in their life.

what would be different?



t’s the new year! Much like spring is the time to clean out the cobwebs of your house, January is the perfect time to clean out the cobwebs of your life. If you are not happy with where you are at, there is no time like the present to make changes. Making goals can revitalise you and inspire rippling changes across your life. Once the holiday festivities are over, if you find yourself thinking, “Back to the same ol’, same ol’ again,” know that it doesn’t have to be that way. Even if you struggle to set goals, change is possible. If you can visualise waking up full of joy, energy, and enthusiasm, then you can reach your goals to get there. The way to move a mountain is one scoopful of dirt at a time. The way to change your life is the same. Making and sticking to a small goal builds willpower. Strong willpower will make it

easier to tackle harder goals. So before you dive in headfirst and resolve to learn a new language, go to the gym more, eat better, and become a better person all at once, pick a small goal. Maybe your small goal is to meditate every morning for even just five minutes. Set your intentions for the day. It takes 21 days to develop a habit. You want your small goal to be a habit. You want to ingrain it into your life so that it is automatic and easy. Once you’ve reached this stage, congratulate yourself. You’ve increased your willpower and added a new beneficial habit to your life. This is the perfect moment to choose your new goal. Choosing the right goal is an art form in itself. Not all goals are good goals. A good goal will be specific. If you are interested in setting a goal of ‘eating healthier’,

it is important to pick parameters. A good goal for eating healthier might be ‘eating two pieces of fruit a day’ or ‘only eating out once a week’. These are actionable goals that you can measure to know whether you’re accomplishing what you mean to. Of course, everyone trips up. If you skip a day on your path to a new, happier you, don’t let that become an excuse for giving up. You are important. You deserve to spend time to make your life brighter, happier, and more fulfilling; however you define that. No matter where you are now or where you want to go, you can make concrete changes that will push you forward into a new chapter of your life. It’s a new year. Now it’s time to make a new you.

Healing your life

assists the planet



hile completing the very practical job of ironing clothes, I tuned in to watch ‘Myths and Legends’ on Netflix. I have always had a fascination for signs, symbols, mythology and tales after studying story writing and seeing the ‘Hero’s Journey’ in all narratives, so this program was right up my street. The host spoke of the collective attachment and belief in ancient stories and how they have shaped our consciousness – good, bad, worthiness, punishment, the journey, the ‘dark night of the soul’ and the hero’s enlightenment at the end. If we look at our life experiences, we can see how this formula has unfolded, the lessons learnt and how it forms our ideas or self-image; we believe ourselves to be a victim, survivor, hero or victor. Having worked with many people balancing their ‘Energetic DNA’ (and having loads of recalibrating myself), I have observed that a significant amount of what we perceive as our personality, challenges or conclusions are in fact a connection to energy masses of thought

or belief we are bound to in different ways that effect self-worth, attitude, awareness and self-recognition created by past experience of all souls. The need to dig deep and understand the ‘story’ when healing is believed to be important, expressing may be therapeutic for the individual, however, when you understand that largely you are healing the pain and wounds of all souls throughout time, it’s going to take a lot of time! There is no separation. The Hawaiians knew this when they practised Ho’oponopono and Eckart Tolle expresses this elegantly in his work also. So where do you start? By noticing your thoughts, beliefs and emotional reactions, observe them like you would a movie, so that the emotion is not held onto, as I am sure you have read before the suppression and repression of emotion is the underlying source for physical pain and stress. Aligned movement

– what is it?



rom the moment the single cell is fertilised, our body and nervous system grows and develops towards ideal functioning as a selfhealing and self-righting entity moving in harmony and balance with gravity and earth rebound. Our body takes in nourishment – oxygen, water and food where it’s converted into energy generated primarily by muscular movements. The energy is then stored throughout the body and used to maintain life. Our muscles act like pumps to move blood and lymph and are a conduit for electrical impulses. When our skeleton is aligned from the feet up and rests within the axis of gravity, our muscles are at the ideal length to use the least amount of effort (energy) for the greatest amount of force. When the skeleton is out of alignment, it becomes subject to the

relentless downward pressure of gravity and the muscles contract in an effort to keep the structure upright and moving, the muscular tension inhibiting flow. The restricted flow of blood, lymph and electrical voltage slows cellular renewal, accelerating the ageing process. From this functional perspective osteoporosis, heart disease, arthritis, nervous system imbalance, learning difficulties, depression, anxiety, digestive and elimination dysfunctions, immunity disorders… can then be approached from a more responsible position without the use of heavy medication and feeling helpless. he beginning of a new year is a time to reflect about the year before –what you did well and what you could do differently. It is a time to be grateful for your learnings from being ‘in flow’ and ‘out of flow’. will never forget my most favourite birthday surprise as a child! As I arrived home from school, I heard my parents yell out, “Kirsten, go into the laundry”. I was rather confused by this request, but wandered into the laundry and heard a very strange noise. Sitting in a basket was the most divine, golden puppy I had ever seen! I screamed, cried and was overwhelmed by this most precious gift! I have always loved surprises and now they are wrapped very differently, but always feel so valuable! The surprises that I love are the ones that open up and unfold from our emotions! I recently had a client who wanted help with her profanities. She said, “They’re rolling off my tongue everywhere! Please help – what is going on?” We traced her lineage back to her grandfather, who would rage, curse and swear whenever he drove. We explored it energetically – her grandfather’s partnership challenged societal conditioning in that his wife was

the breadwinner back in that time. My client’s evolution was in opening up to her earning potential as a woman and embracing her own male energy in her business. In one session, numerous passive income opportunities opened up. The trapped energy in her body, which manifested as profanities or rage (her grandfather’s conditioning), was her body wanting to open up to her power, potential and ability to create more money for herself. The energy of rage was able to be transformed into earning potential and to own her ability to be the ‘breadwinner’ in partnership, just like her grandmother! Wonderful surprises also unfold in our home! My husband used to feel restless in the home and his go-to would be leaving home to free himself from this uncomfortable emotion. Once he realised his ‘restless’ emotion was inviting him to open up his creativity and delve into his gift of song writing, he was able to surrender in the home. More importantly, he was able to surrender to his heart!

I understand my own creative frustration and how in the past, I used to run it out through exercise. fit and fabulous: Part 1



had been unhappy for over six years and knew that I needed to do something about my health and fitness. Yet there was always next week, or after Christmas, or after the school holidays, or simply not thinking about it! By November 2014, I weighed 115kg and was suffering from serious stress related health problems. I had gained a copious amount of weight since giving birth to my twin boys in 2006. I was chronically obese, at risk of diabetes and could easily have had a heart attack. I had been diagnosed with severe Scoliosis, a spinal stress fracture and several stress related medical conditions including Pyrole disorder and chronic fatigue. Yet, despite the obvious risks, I found it hard to stick to any weight loss and exercise program. Then things started to change for the better. A friend of mine who is a health and fitness devotee introduced me to FamilyFitNation. She raved about their delivered, tasty, organic meals which

were correctly portioned. In November 2014, I ordered my first week’s supply of FFN energy meals delivered by Dmitri Simons in person to my home. What happens after

the holidays?



nce the holiday period is finished, a lot of people start with New Year’s resolutions. These goals can include: trying to lose weight, improving their diet and exercising. I see a lot of people in the mornings, jogging, riding bikes, etc. Unfortunately it seems that these new regimes do not last very long. It’s not viable trying to eat little when you are hungry and exercise when you don’t have the energy. It is a bit of a vicious cycle. Overweight people don’t choose to be overweight, feel tired, and be very inflamed. Having worked in emergency medicine for a number of years, and seeing people with conditions related to lifestyle, it made me think of the real reasons why they don’t change. It is not because they are lazy, it is because they are following the wrong ideas of how to get healthy. Having a healthy diet is essential to give the right fuel to the body and mind. This is critical when we start exercising. Doing strength training, is one of the factors that helps to slow

have asked a few people what does it mean to them. Strangely enough it has a completely different meaning to each individual. This is what I know about gratitude… IT’S A MAGNET FOR MIRACLES. It’s a supernatural tool that once found, will propel you and others into a space beaming with new revelations. 1. In every circumstance look for the gratitude. 2. That becomes a habit. 3. Habit begins to retrain the brain. 4. Brain creates happy hormones (dopamine).

5. Pass on the happiness to others. Practise it. Create a gratitude jar. I have noticed it changes the colours I wear, my posture, my smile, the lines on my face. I sense people with gratitude. They walk into a room and instantly the vibe shifts. It flows from them, just like dark energy does. It’s light to carry and will energise the owner. Seek it. Speak it. So as I dig deeper into the mixed world of gratitude, I uncover something about myself that leaves me glum. I realise I project so much love and gratitude for others and outward things

that I never stopped to be grateful for myself. I’m so critical of me. Fat arms, no dedication and discipline for exercise, swear too much, drink too much, stress too much, impatient and the list goes on. I struggle to believe a compliment and with all I have overcome and achieved (bucket loads), I have never stopped to think sh*t you are brave. So in this moment with you here, I acknowledge and proudly say to myself. I’m grateful for you Sonya.

Sweating and body odour Your skin has two main types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands occur over most of your body and open directly onto the surface of the skin. Apocrine glands develop in areas abundant in hair follicles, such as your armpits and groin, and they empty into the hair follicle just before it opens onto the skin surface. When your body temperature rises, your eccrine glands secrete fluid onto the surface of your skin, where it cools your body as it evaporates. This fluid is composed mainly of water and salt. Apocrine glands, on the other hand, secrete a solution that is thicker than sweat and contains fatty acids and proteins. This fluid is odourless until it combines with bacteria found normally on your skin. Antiperspirants and deodorants Deodorants contain ingredients that neutralise the odour and kill the bacteria. They don’t stop you from perspiring, like antiperspirants do. But don’t think that just because it


doesn’t contain those nasty aluminium compounds that it’s safe. Deodorants can still contain petrochemical penetration enhancers like propylene glycol, toxic, hormone disrupting chemicals like triclosan and allergenic and neurotoxic fragrance compounds and of course, paraben preservatives, which are controversial in their potential relationship with breast cancer. All antiperspirants have an aluminium-based compound as their main ingredient. If you look at the back of an antiperspirant container, the aluminium-based compound is always the first ingredient listed. Here are a few of the common active ingredients: Aluminium chloride, aluminium zirconium tricholorohydrex glycine, aluminium chlorohydrate, aluminium hydroxybromide. The aluminium ions, are taken into the cells that line the eccrine-gland ducts. When the aluminium ions are drawn into the cells, water passes in with them. As more water flows in, the cells begin to swell, squeezing the ducts closed so that sweat can’t get out.

Alum-free myth of crystal deodorants Rock crystal deodorants contain ammonium aluminium sulfate and potassium aluminium sulfate. Alum is actively astringent. It coagulates the albumin in the tissues and in the blood, produces local contraction of the capillaries. Anyone wishing to avoid aluminium compounds would be well advised to avoid products that contain these ingredients. The importance of sweating! New research is revealing something remarkable about why the body sweats. Beyond its obvious role in regulating body temperature, sweating has been found to facilitate the elimination of accumulated heavy metals and petrochemicals. If it’s a chlorinated pool that is keeping you cool, entertained and fit this summer you should be aware that there are harmful chemical compounds in your pool water, many of which have been linked to serious health problems. Conventional pools use disinfection chemicals such as chlorine to kill pathogens. Chlorine was used during World War I as a chemical weapon and today its uses include disinfecting everything from tap water to industrial waste and sewage. At low levels, chlorine inhalation causes irritation to skin, eyes and throat. At higher levels, it causes symptoms of ‘Swimmer’s Asthma’, ‘Swimmer’s Erosion’ (wearing away of tooth enamel), and increased risk of diseases such as melanoma, bladder and rectal cancer and asthma. Children are more susceptible to the effects of chlorine because their bodies absorb it more readily than adults. Absorption of chlorine is accelerated with increased activity, which means

DBPs are especially hazardous to a person’s health. Human skin will absorb small amounts of pool water and pull chemicals out of the water and deposit them into the bloodstream and tissues. Anybody who goes to a chlorinated pool will be exposed to both chlorine and DBPs from the pool water or the air around it. DBPs are known to cause a number of health issues, including asthma, allergic reactions, bladder cancer and respiratory illnesses. DON’T FLOAT – Extending about a foot above the pool water is a zone filled with trichloramines (DBPs). The urea in the urine reacts with chlorine to form trichloramine (DBPs), which produces the distinctive odour in indoor pools, and has been associated with respiratory symptoms. DON’T WEAR SUNSCREEN – Chlorine transforms sunscreen into cancer-causing toxic chemicals. Sunscreen’s active ingredient, Avobenzone, breaks down into phenols and acetyl benzenes, when it reacts to UV radiation and chlorinated water on wet skin. Both are toxic and linked to problems such as immune system damage, infertility, and cancer. he fundamental understanding of healing is not to resist or to repel. The problem is that this process happens almost like a reflex without your active involvement, and is pretty much what happens in allergies; you repel a substance and a reflex action occurs, inflammation. The reflex action is the flight/fight/foetal response of shock releasing adrenaline and cortisol, hence why these drugs are very good at treating the symptoms of allergies. When an allergy occurs, there is not only a repulsion to the substance and a reaction in the three dimensional physical body but there is also a reaction in the six dimensional spiritual body. The spirit body is simply our consciousness, over any one subject and we have six channels that make up our consciousness, three negative and three positive channels. t’s the start of a magical day where anything seems possible. The sun is just starting to poke its head over the horizon. You open your eyes and wake up. What will you create your day to be? Do you realise how much your choices impact the day that unfolds? What if your day went something like the following: You get out of bed, and two kids with happy, smiling faces greet you. Their eyes are sparkling with the joy of seeing you. Your dog jumps up on you and gives you a big morning welcome. What do you choose? Do you smile and return the greetings? Or do you ignore it as you are consumed by your thoughts

about the day ahead. Let’s explore what happens when your dread of the day ahead overpowers you. You become tense and snap and snarl your way through the morning chores. The smiles on the faces around you start to fade, as your tension and stress spreads to the whole family. Now everyone is cranky and frowning. You are stressed before you even walk in the door at work. The day deteriorates from there, as everything that could go wrong, does. With every new problem you get more and more tense. Your day that started with potential and magic, has instead become one of the worst days of your life. At this stage you are considering banging your head against a wall. Then a magic fairy, in the form of a work colleague, turns up at your desk. She recommends that you go outside for a walk to get some fresh air and perspective. What will you choose? You can ignore her and continue to wallow in the depths of despair for the rest

of the day. Or you can go for a walk, put the events of the morning in the past and live in the moment. If you choose this option, you can let Mother Nature work her magic on you. Repaying your dog’s unconditional love WORDS VIVIENNE PASTARS


t truly is a wonderful feeling to share, or have shared, a ‘special’ relationship with a dog. Their intuitive awareness, conscious presence and endless friendship is a feeling you never forget, and rare to find between humans. While dogs appear to unconditionally ride our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual rollercoasters… do we ride theirs? Do we return the love? I was deeply moved to learn that dogs do indeed live ‘in the moment’. However, they also hold, deep within their bodies, old memories, stresses, traumas and fears. Coupled with the well-known fact that our own human emotions may be adding to their discomfort, I think it’s time we recognised that dogs are more emotionally like us than we ever thought. I wanted to ‘give back’ to the dogs and help them regain their natural state of balance and emotional wellbeing. From this desire ‘Zen Dog Massage’ was born, inspired by Zen – and dogs! Zen is beyond definition, but many definitions attempt to capture it! It’s an attitude, not a belief. Zen is present-centred and brings together body and mind to experience

the fullness and unity of reality. When I work with a dog, I create a ‘space’. A space of trust for the dog to ‘just be’ and experience. I acknowledge the interconnectedness of body, mind and emotions. By ‘space’, I’m referring to conscious space, I bring my entire presence to the dog. I take a walk with the dog on their inner journey without judgement, without intellectualising or needing to impact the outcome. I give my heart, let go of control and offer unconditional support. From an inner stillness, I can connect with the dog at a deeper level where understanding is beyond words. In essence it is the dog’s customised experience in that particular moment. The beautiful book with the perfect title – The Zen of Touch by Gwyn Williams bears a quote “Strip back the unconscious layers, dissolve the doubts that prevent you from being your boundless being”. How appropriate. Using proven body energy techniques I will support the dog on their return journey back to that joyous boundless being. Like humans, some journeys are

fast while others have twists and turns requiring patient unravelling. You can be sure I will be there with awareness, appreciation, and the ability to feel and influence the dog’s energy, whatever the stress, wherever it lies and whatever form it’s in. I am forever grateful to the dogs that have shared and touched my life thus far and to the many more yet to come. I honour the place in you that is the same in me. – Namaste.
