Gut Healing Choc Hemp Smoothie Words Helen Marshall
B
efore I cleaned up my diet seven years ago, I used to love chocolate milk or a low-fat chocolate dessert as an afternoon pickme-up. I believed because it was low fat it was healthy and the dairy made it full of calcium and good for my bones, right? Wrong. Turns out those desserts were full of carcinogenic sweeteners and the milk made me constipated, and we haven’t even started on the additives and preservatives. Yuck! Eating plants and animals most of the time was fine, but I really missed that afternoon treat – so, I made a primal alternative, so I didn’t need to miss out. Humans hate deprivation, as you’ll have experienced first-hand. When you tell yourself you can’t have chocolate, – what’s the thing you can’t stop thinking about? Chocolate!!! So, if the deprivation approach has failed you, congratulations, you’re normal! Why not try finding primal alternatives to the foods you love, to make your version of clean living easier?
‘No deprivation’ is the premise I have built the Primal Alternative brand on. Bread : The good,

hy are the things that taste so good often the worst things for us? Case in point: bread. Many people struggle to properly digest bread products in their diet. Whether it gives you constipation, bloating, heartburn or diarrhoea, I’m seeing more and more clients who can’t escape the unwanted side effects of bread consumption. And I’m not even talking about coeliacs; there’s a growing population with a strong sensitivity to bread products without actually having an allergy, and therefore feel healthier when they minimise consumption. But why is bread so bad for us? And are there better options available to satisfy your carb cravings while keeping your gut happy? Bad – White bread If you haven’t figured it out by now, refined white bread is pretty much considered the devil in health circles. It offers little nutritional value, causes weight gain, spikes blood sugar, and has been shown to contribute to symptoms of depression. So it’s no surprise that
white bread is the absolute worst for your gut health. If you’re struggling with IBS symptoms, this is definitely one to avoid. Just as bad – Wholemeal This one may come as a bit of a surprise, as most of us grew up believing wholemeal bread is healthy. To a certain point, it is, but even wholegrain bread can blow your calorie intake for the day when eaten in excess. The problem with wholemeal bread is that it’s still a highly processed wheat. Given the main issue with white bread is the higher gluten content in modern wheat compared to ancient grains, unfortunately, wholemeal bread won’t let you escape your IBS symptoms. Better – Sourdough Sourdough is a much better option when consuming bread. The fermentation process reduces the gluten content, enhances the bioavailability of nutrients and releases more fibre, which in turn can encourage the growth of helpful bacteria in your gut. But there’s even a sliding scale of goodness when
it comes to sourdough. Sure, a white sourdough is a much better option than eating conventional bread, but to get the best results for your gut, search for an organic ancient grain loaf such as spelt, amaranth or Khorasan. These varieties typically have even less gluten and higher nutrient availability. Best – Sprouted bread Without a doubt, this is the best bread variety you can choose for great gut health. Before production, the whole grains are soaked and sprouted to improve health benefits. Sprouted bread offers increased digestibility, higher protein content and improved enzyme activity. Other benefits include more antioxidants, fewer antinutrients, higher fibre, and it won’t spike your blood sugar as much. If you struggle with IBS symptoms after consuming bread, look out for sprouted bread in the refrigerated section of your nearest health food store. Macadamia and Lemon Myrtle Shortbread Cookies RECIPE Julie-Anne Outhwaite
Paleo, Vegan, Gluten Free, Grain Free, Low G-I, Keto Ingredients: 2 cups ground almonds 1 cup arrowroot starch ½ cup coconut flour 2 tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp baking soda ¼ tsp salt ⅔ cup maple syrup ⅔ cup coconut oil 4 drops lemon myrtle oil 1 cup macadamias, chopped 1 dollop of love
NOTE: Maple syrup can be swapped with ¼ cup monk fruit powder or 2 tbsp stevia and increase coconut oil to 1 cup to keep dough consistency. Method: 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well to combine into a soft dough. 2. Wrap dough in plastic wrap or waxed paper to form a cylinder approximately 5cm diameter. 3. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Keto Rich Dark Chocolate Cake RECIPE TABITHA LEE
“Come take a walk on the DARK side. I promise you, it’s not scary. There is no sugar there, you are safe.” Ingredients: Base 1 heaped cup desiccated coconut 2 tbsp raw cacao powder 1 tsp vanilla ¼ cup pepita seeds 1 tbsp stevia powder or monk fruit Pinch sea salt 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted Filling 2 cups raw cashews 1 cup ripe avocado 1¼ cups full fat coconut cream ¾-1 cup raw cacao powder ½ cup stevia powder or monk fruit 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp fresh orange rind ¼ tsp sea salt ¾ cup coconut oil, melted
Method: 1. Line a 20cm springform pan with baking paper. 2. Place the coconut, cacao, vanilla, pepitas, stevia and sea salt into a Vitamix blender and pulse until very fine crumbs. Add the melted coconut oil and further blend until resembles a doughlike consistency. 3. Press onto the base of the lined pan and place aside while you prepare the filling. 4. Place cashews, avocado, coconut cream, cacao powder, stevia, vanilla, orange rind and sea salt into the cleaned Vitamix jug and blend on high speed using your tamper stick to ensure the filling is very smooth. Place the melted coconut oil into the mixture and further blend until combined. Pour over the base. 5. Place into the refrigerator to set for 24 hours. 6. Remove from the pan and slice with a warm knife and serve with your favourite side condiments.
Top Tips: Ok here I have some yummy tips. If you are not worried about if this cake is keto and want it slightly more indulgent, omit the stevia for 1 cup of pure Canadian maple syrup. If you choose to do this, please use the AYAM full fat coconut cream as this cream sets firmer. If you are using stevia use any full fat coconut cream as the AYAM will be too firm with the stevia. If you don’t have oranges and have edible essential oils, use 3 drops of orange oil. I love wild orange. You could make this cake chocolate mint by using a couple drops peppermint oil, but only start with 2 drops, taste, then reassess if you need more as peppermint, if you add too much, is not very forgiving. A
permaculture garden is your continual source of wonderfully fresh, nutrient- and mineraldense produce for a healthy balanced diet. The vitality of produce is highest just as it’s harvested. It then rapidly degrades and loses nutrients – even in the fridge. So surround yourself with edible gardens you can harvest from each day or each meal! Replace processed foods with real foods. By surrounding yourself with a diverse garden full of vegetables, fruits and herbs, you will naturally eat more of them every day. Abundant permaculture gardens produce so much leafy green salads and greens of all kinds that you’ll have the luxury of accompanying every meal with a nutrient- and fibre-packed salad, and surplus to give to friends and neighbours. Eating whole foods from your garden keeps you feeling fuller for longer. For example, a bowlful of
homegrown salad has much more fibre than iceberg lettuce and overwatered spinach leaves. Did you know that broccoli leaves are one of the most nutrient-dense salad greens? They are high in protein as well as vitamin A. Whereas iceberg lettuce is among the least nutritious greens to add to salad. Why not add some fast-growing greens to your salad and leafy green garden? Try chia greens, radicchio, watercress, cos lettuce, rainbow chard, mustard greens, spinach, kale, beet greens, dandelion greens, tatsoi, bok choy, radish, collards, endive, sorrel, corn salad, turnips, spring onions, fava greens and pea shoots. The most popular meal in our household is frittata and salad – it’s super quick, super fresh and super filling without the calories. First, we wander through the garden and harvest a bundle of the healthiest looking greens, herbs and whatever other seasonal vegetables look amazing that day. Next,

we visit our lovely hens and collect the eggs. We thank them with a bouquet of older leaves from the garden – ones a bit past their prime – then head back to the kitchen to cook it all up together. It’s a particularly filling and healthy meal because we always enjoy it with a fresh fibre-filled salad. While the frittata is cooking, we go back out to the garden and collect some salad ingredients: cherry tomatoes, snow peas, peas, cos lettuce leaves, mizuna, mustard greens, fava greens (broad bean leaves), basil, oregano, parsley and rosemary – a leaf of this, a leaf of that. It’s a meal that looks amazing, tastes amazing, keeps me full, and I never tire of it. It’s different every day depending on what we find in the garden, and the freshness is so uplifting. mental programs that playout throughout life. That Christmas my Mum bought me a set of dumbbells and when I was old enough, I bought myself a gym, to which natural body building has become a passion that has spanned decades. It seems easy when I say it like that in a
few lines of text. The bigger reality is that amidst all the perspiration there were two keys that made the difference: 1. Meditation [Internal Game] Incidences like the one above are often emotionally charged and form internal programs and beliefs about ourselves. Often the programs running in our heads don’t match our desired result, and we find ourselves trying and failing over and over again. For example, we desire our body to be one way, but our internal story doesn’t match the image of what we’re creating. Establishing a meditation practice enables us to step outside the programs. When we develop the ability to be able to get outside the mind, we dwell in stillness and it’s in that stillness that we can truly experience what abundance might feel like and begin reimagining a version of ourselves which can form the foundations of a more desirable internal programme. For me, meditation has become a daily practice and something that I am passionate about teaching, as it allows me to consciously shape my life. 2. Find a Coach [External Game] The second thing was finding a coach who had the success that I wanted. To effectively learn the habits in thinking and behaving, we need to find someone who has the long-lasting results we are looking for. Meditation is super important, however there comes a point

where we need to take effective action. It wasn’t until I found a coach, who had the success I wanted, that I mastered my body and began competing in natural bodybuilding competitions. weighing you down?

o you find it hard to keep your head above water and are just surviving from payday to payday? Please do not feel that you are alone. We usually associate weight management with the extra kilos that may have crept on (especially during the Coronavirus). However, carrying around the worries of not being able to pay the bills or manage your financial situation is also a burden to your health. Just yesterday, I had a new client come in for her second appointment. At her first appointment, we looked at the ‘big picture’ of her life. We discussed where she is now and where she wants to be. This takes in not just the financial situation, but various aspects of her life that she wants to change or achieve. We also discussed how to accumulate wealth and possible tax-saving strategies. I like to increase clients’ knowledge about investing, to take away the fear and enable them to make informed decisions.
We found that she knew how much income she was receiving but had no idea how much she needed to pay all the bills. She did not have a current will in place and did not know that she needed to have an enduring power of attorney as well. The nomination of a beneficiary on her superannuation was in place; however, it could be restructured for an enhanced outcome when she passes. Over the years, I have seen many people who give their super fund statement a cursory look when it arrives and then file it away. Imagine their shock when I point out that their ex-husband or ex-wife/partner is still nominated as their beneficiary! Getting back to my new client’s first appointment – after our initial discussion, her homework list included: 1) provide copies of payslips; 2) budget (we provide a template); 3) write her wish list of short-, medium- and long-term goals; 4) provide details of all super funds; 5) provide details of current personal insurance cover; 6) update will and enduring power of
attorney; and 7) read the investment material provided. She commented that in the back of her mind, she knew all these things needed to be addressed, but it was too hard and overwhelming. However, someone giving her a homework list for her life gave her the challenge to address all the issues. At her second appointment yesterday, she proudly advised that she had done all the things on her list. This meant we could formulate the next steps to help her achieve the things on her wish list. She had a big smile on her face, her body language showed she was in control, and she said, “I feel like a big weight has lifted off my shoulders”. A
bundance breaths is a simple but amazingly powerful exercise to attract prosperity, which takes less than a minute a day and can easily make you a money magnet. Through the Law of Attraction, you become what you focus on. Too often, it can be challenging to know exactly what that is. Sometimes it’s easier to just focus on feeling abundant, rather than the specifics. It’s the feeling that has the attraction power anyway – you can get specific when all the money comes in! Follow the process below or listen to the guided visualisation at www.WildlyWealthy.com/abundance Gently relax and close your eyes. Take a moment to imagine you’re surrounded by tiny, minute glowing particles of abundance that you can reach out and touch and bring into your life whenever you desire (which you can!). Take a long, slow, deep abundance breath in for the count of three, expanding and filling your lungs.
Imagine you’re breathing in those tiny glowing particles of prosperity, filling every fibre of your being, and feel your body being flooded with abundance. Hold your breath for the count of six and feel every cell in your entire body plumped with prosperity, filled with abundance, resonating with riches. Then slowly breathe out that abundance to circulate throughout the universe. Once again, take another long, slow abundance breath in. This time, see your body light up from the inside out, glowing with prosperity, sparkling with riches, dazzling with wealth. I like to imagine my body glowing from the inside like the dazzle in Aladdin’s cave! Hold for the count of six, seeing and feeling that glow, then breathe out the abundance to circulate throughout the universe. One last time, slowly breathe in a big abundance breath and while you hold that breath, imagine and feel what it’s like to be totally abundant, amazingly wealthy, to have achieved
financial freedom and be rich beyond your wildest dreams. Feel how that feels; feel how light and free and good that feels. Expand that feeling; feel it flood through your body. Embrace that amazing feeling throughout your body, mind and spirit. Finally, slowly breathe the abundance and prosperity out to circulate throughout the universe. When you’re ready, open your eyes, feeling prosperous, wealthy, and rich, rich, rich! This easy but powerful process can be done daily to attract more prosperity. It only takes a couple of minutes but has amazing money-magnetising powers. Once you get really good at your abundance breaths, you won’t even need to close your eyes – you will be able to feel those feelings, see your body glowing with prosperity, and really feel you are beginning to attract money into your experience. his month, I’d like to focus on the third Q, which centres on one of the most important keys to achieving healthier eating and maintaining a healthy weight – that of practising mindfulness and mindful slow eating. Q4 QUICK – how fast are you eating? Try to eat slowly and mindfully with as many chews as you can of the food in your mouth. As a family, sit together around the dinner table and aim to finish main meals using the 20-minute rule. Mindfulness or ‘living in the current moment’ is a huge and powerful movement essential for dealing with the many stresses of our everyday lives, and can be part of a whole-family approach to improve everyone’s mental and physical health. Stage 4 in my book, Ride to Life, describes how to share a mindful meal together; all members of the family including both parents together at the table at a pre-agreed, regular, nonnegotiable time of the evening: • There is a shared appreciation of the

meal and preparation taken to bring it to the table. • There is NO technology; e.g., phone, iPads, laptops, TV turned off and preferably nowhere near the dinner table or in the room (no exceptions – it’s non-negotiable). • Everyone stays at the table for the duration of the meal – a balanced, mindful meal experience requires 30 minutes of time, making it an ideal opportunity to connect and catch up with one another through deep communication enabled by conversation, a celebration of wins, expression of concerns and looking ahead. • If you find it challenging to have conversations around the dinner table, then see more exercises outlined in the Ride to Life book. • Before you embark on your new dinner routine, discuss as a family, the expectation of politeness and respect at the table. • Each family members paces their

ur bodies are as amazing as they are complex. Whether you realise it or not, your body is like a high-performance vehicle. For example, is your body like a Ferrari? Maybe it’s seen a few miles but still works powerfully and looks pretty good. Or is it more like a crushed-in mini? Remember, your body (highperformance vehicle) needs a strong engine (kept in top shape with the right type of exercise) and high-performance fuel (optimised nutrition) to work effectively. Mindset is the highly skilled driver constantly reviewing, fine-tuning and helping you stay on track. Synergising mindset, nutrition and exercise behaviours as part of your lifestyle is the most effective nonsurgical approach to weight loss and health – and I would argue more empowering and fun as well! An
integrative medicine approach to weight

cycle between periods of abundance and famine, getting our body into a state of ketosis, where fatty acids are burnt as energy for a constant supply of energy to keep up with normal body functions. In times of excess food being available, we created a mechanism of survival, where we accumulated reserves to get us ready for the winter times of starvation. This has been referred to as the Thrifty Gene Hypothesis. In my practice, I try to mimic nature with cycles of fasting and reduction of excess energy foods as a reboot switch for the endocrine system, to try to normalise the excess insulin most people are subjected to nowadays, as the times of famine never come. We see incredible results, reducing weight and even reversing type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and other chronic pathologies when this is implemented correctly. There has been confusion in the last few decades regarding what a healthy diet should be. So far, I don’t think we

iven these uncertain times with the actual pandemic, it is even more important to try to maintain a healthy immune system. We are seeing the biggest toll from this existing virus on the most immunocompromised, diabetics and elderly people. Unfortunately, two-thirds of the population are metabolically unhealthy, with soaring numbers of prediabetics and diabetics. We are exposed to energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods that are high in sugar and fat. There is certain toxicity with any excess energy foods we eat and don’t burn. The adipose tissue or fat is considered an active endocrine organ that produces proinflammatory cytokines, contributing to the low-level chronic inflammation we see in obese people. As hunter-gatherers, we used to
have been getting it right as the number of morbidly obese people is increasing dramatically. The modern way of life, with very little physical activity and high stress exposure, doesn’t help with trying to keep a healthy weight. Therefore, it is extremely important to try to reduce the high energy foods that are normally deprived of nutrients, and keep up the right amounts of protein to avoid sarcopenia or muscle loss to preserve a lean body mass and prevent the epidemic of osteoporosis in our ageing population. Eat clean unprocessed foods, locally grown and are environmentally friendly, with an adequate amount of protein, preferably animal as it is the most bioavailable nutrient-dense food that we have been eating for millions of years. ave you struggled to lose weight and keep it off over the years? Internationally acclaimed researcher and ketogenic expert, Deborah Murtagh from New Zealand, has facilitated countless women all over the world to be empowered and create a new life with her famous Ketogenic Switch program. Deborah has lived experience with body image and weight issues. “I was dragged off to Weight Watchers at 13 years of age. And it’s part of why
I became an international women’s weight loss coach,” she said. Her early experiences were a catalyst for change and, in turn, she has become an inspiration for others. Gluten and homogenised dairy were also having an impact on my daughter’s brain and health.” Today, Deborah and her three

beautiful daughters are fit and healthy, and her unique ketogenic diet is her much-touted secret tool to her abundant energy to run her eight companies – and find the time to conduct research as an unpaid volunteer. This ketogenic research is ground-breaking with positive implications for not only weight loss but also for people with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and many other health conditions. “We are seeing women reverse diabetes, fatty liver and have dramatic health improvements,” she shared. Deborah has personally adopted a ketogenic diet for over 17 years now. She says she cycles in and out, eating carbs once a week. Although, 70-80% of the time being in ketosis is her preferred state and she can’t imagine living any other way. That’s also the feedback from tens of thousands of people she has coached over the years. “Once you experience what it feels like to have your body in nutritional ketosis, you never want to go back. And when you begin, you get to day four and you feel like the curtains have been drawn, the veil has lifted, the mental fog has gone, you have exponential energy, and you’re not hungry – the hunger hormone, ghrelin, shuts down. You are left with constructive hunger, which is about eating when you are actually hungry to fuel the body. It’s a very successful, appropriate and easy way to lose and regulate weight. People feel better and sleep better,” she shared. What happens over time (after 3-6 months of going keto) is people become fat-adapted and the body is retrained to prefer ketones. What happens at that point is their carbohydrate tolerance increases over time, and that is a huge benefit. The mitochondria in the cells increases, and the more we have, the healthier, more vibrant and youthful we are. When nutritional ketosis is combined
with intermittent fasting, we can further enhance health and optimise brain function. This may be why the keto diet has received much global attention in recent years, but there are also many myths about it too. “Not all keto diets are created equal,” Deborah said. “I prefer to call it ketogenic not keto; keto often gets a bad rap because some people think it’s about high fat and eating large amounts of bacon. My program is one of the lowest fat ketogenic diets out there. Babies are born in nutritional ketosis; breast milk is ketogenic. Why did nature design us this way? It’s the way we were meant to be fuelled. Nutritional ketosis is a tool that is valuable for us.” The standard, modern supermarket diet has a high percentage of processed foods and carbohydrates. When we have too much glucose in the body, insulin will convert the excess glucose into fat for later use. This was fine when we were living in times of famine, but there isn’t famine like our ancestors experienced and more people are becoming insulin resistant. “We are experiencing feast and feast and as a result, obesity is a plague of our time. Glucose is like burning old, dirty lead petrol, whereas with ketones you become a hybrid, twin fuel engine. Switching to ketosis is like a clean and green burning fuel. Your body will still utilise some glucose, and it will always have enough glucose to fuel the cells that are important. But ketone bodies don’t require insulin to be transported inside the cells,” she said. So what role do the emotional, spiritual and mindset factors play when it comes to weight management? Deborah looks at the whole picture, including diet, and shares her comprehensive insights. “You can have the best diet in the world, which I believe my protocol is, but all of that goes out the window if people are self-sabotaging, if they are ‘eating their stress’ and ‘eating their grief’, if they are lonely and their needs aren’t being met, or they feel unsafe, they will turn to food for comfort.” Deborah believes mindset is everything with all aspects of our life, and she brings an holistic approach to everything she does. She has also learnt how to grow stronger through adversity after having many personal challenges, including her now ex-husband going bankrupt about nine years ago and being unofficially bankrupt herself for six years, and losing two homes in
earthquakes. She says what changed her life was changing her mindset. Now, her life is about practising gratitude and staying in the flow. “I teach people how to increase emotional intelligence, how to step into the ‘observer’ so that people are more observant of emotions rather than allowing the e-motion (energy in motion) to override them. I teach how to transcend the ego, which bridges towards spirituality. We have women of all religions and faiths within my program, so everyone can be a part of what I teach, and the common thread is having a belief system that there is a higher power and purpose to our lives.” Deborah runs spiritual retreats around the world called the Soul Switch Program, which focuses on shifting consciousness and transcending ‘problems’. “It’s about aligning with the vibrational frequency of love, which has the ability to heal people, connections, the body, and the immune system. We know from epigenetic research what overrides our genetic expression and controls our immune system is our consciousness and our belief systems.” That’s why people often go into spontaneous remission – it’s a shift in consciousness that has taken place. “I cry tears of joy when I see people breaking through their barriers.” And with tears of gratitude, Deborah shared with me, “I feel like I have the best job in the world. And I don’t own it – this work would have been born whether it was me or someone else. ow do you know if your weight is ‘emotional’? Easy! If you can relate to any of the two statements below, your weight is most likely emotional. Learning to become emotionally fit will give you great results. 1. I exercise regularly and eat well but still carry weight. 2. It is hard for me to maintain regular exercise and eat well because of my commitments. Here are four ways to increase your emotional fitness: 1. Stop taking on the emotional stress of others. Simple to understand, challenging to do day-to-day with family members. Whether you like it or not, your energy is entangled with the others in your home. The easiest way to not take on the stress of others is to stay focused on your areas of growth or what you love to do. Just like a plant, if you keep growing towards your light, the old parts naturally and effortlessly fall away. All of us are equipped with the ability to manage, understand and transform our emotions. We must learn how to do this.
When we do, our body can maintain a natural weight with little effort. 2. Get help with long-term sabotaging patterns and programs. Don’t let them hang around! Whether your habit is with eating/drinking, getting sick, being tired, working all the time, complaining, always busy with kids or lack of money, anything can evolve or be changed. There are many amazing modalities, tools and techniques that can help you transform your long-term sabotaging pattern and programs. Take action here! Your body weight will love it. 3. Open up about past secrets. Whether you have been the victim or persecutor, this secret has a lot of energetic weight. The longer you hold onto your secret, the heavier it becomes. Eventually, this energetic weight becomes physical weight. Secrets usually carry a lot of shame, regret, self-pity, anger and fear. We are all slaves to inner ancestral and socially conditioned patterns and programs that make us act out being a victim or

Stop emotionally losing it at home. If you regularly lose your s%#t at home with different experiences but the same emotion, you are suffering from internal emotional stress. T
he body is an entity in constant motion. It has two separate brains, the central nervous system (CNS) and the enteric nervous system, which is embedded in the lining of the gastrointestinal system and communicates with the CNS through the parasympathetic nervous system via the vagus nerve. The sympathetic nervous system, also called flight/fright, directs the body’s rapid involuntary response to dangerous or stressful situations. A flash of hormones boosts alertness and heart rate, sending extra oxygenated blood to the muscles. Breathing quickens to deliver fresh oxygen to the brain, and extra glucose is shot into the bloodstream for a quick energy boost. This energy is drawn from the digestive system, so for the term of the stress response, this system is working under par. Ideally, this is a functional response to a short-term situation.
However, when this life-saving response to danger isn’t resolved naturally, a person becomes locked into a pattern of stress then exhaustion. In this situation, losing weight is much more than eating less, changing your diet, taking supplements, diuretics or laxatives. If the gut isn’t functioning well, it doesn’t matter what is thrown at it, it’s not going to be able to process and eliminate properly. Stress can arise from any number of events and become deeply embedded in the habits and patterns of daily life. Instead of trying to figure out what started this ball rolling, I’ve found through personal and empirical experience that the best way to change these patterns is by restoring correct alignment through body awareness. Our most primal fear is the fear of falling, a life-saving awareness in response to gravity. The position of the feet is the messenger of safety or danger
to the nervous system. Becoming aware of how we are positioned and how we move our body through space, and learning new ways to move in alignment, we can gradually restore functional motility to the gut. We become more mobile on all levels – restoring movement to the spine, building neural pathways to underused body parts, experience less pain and becoming more energetic. Approach your body in a more compassionate way instead of ‘battling’ or ‘fighting’ weight gain. Even these two words commonly used in relation to resolving weight gain evoke fear and stress. To be well, we need to be well with our self first. Always think and speak well of yourself, being nonjudgmental of you and others. any people struggle with weight loss – both achieving it and maintaining it. Unfortunately, many will achieve weight loss only to find they yo-yo back to their previous weight or even end up heavier than they were before. Why is this? Weight loss is as much about mental health as it is about physical health. There is a significant psychological and emotional relationship between emotional avoidance and selfsoothing with overeating. People binge eat for a variety of reasons, such as avoidance, reward, self-soothing, protection and self-harm. Medical issues aside, eating disorders, including overeating, are often ‘feeling disorders’. To achieve sustained weight loss, the relationship between the person and their emotional body needs to be explored. By building a more compassionate, empathetic and supportive relationship towards the self, people find instead of avoiding the discomfort of emotions by overeating, they can learn to hold
discomfort compassionately and be with the pain – achieving self-love as opposed to self-harm. As a psychotherapist, when working with disordered eating, I aim to uncover what is at the core of emotional pain in order to access a specific ‘cognitive reframe and healing intention’. Our emotions are the signal and, therefore, the access point for healing. Anger may call for forgiveness, hurt call for compassion, and emptiness call for connection. By identifying the blocked emotion, you can identify the unmet need and align yourself to health and healing. s I turn the corner into my 60s, I am blessed to finally realise that weight gain through my 50s and menopause isn’t something I need to take into the next decade. Despite a well-worn fallacy that ‘it’s just what happens in menopause’, my research and personal weight loss (with Deborah Murtagh) has challenged that belief. My menopausal ‘spread’, about 8-9 kilos extra that mostly resided around my mid-section but generally all over, was not just weight gain but chronic inflammation. I had normal weight fluctuations through my 20s to 40s. I’d always exercised, ate sensibly and generally kept foods out of my house that I could binge on if things got a bit intense. But 45 had a different plan for me: a big relationship breakup, the tragic death of a family member, and glandular fever, after which I became chronically fatigued with adrenal burnout. excess weight blocking you from living your dreams and vision?

eight can come in many forms: heavy thoughts, too much stuff, density, emotional baggage, shame and of course, our body. There can be a lot of things in our environment (inside and out) that make us feel heavy and tired. But have you ever realised that this very heaviness is the reason why you aren’t living your dreams yet? Let me explain. Let’s say you’ve got a vision, a dream. You’re totally set on achieving it, so you try hard to move forward, take the right steps and do the right things. But you hear crickets – nothing, or at least not enough. Why is that? It’s because you need to shift the old first. This can be in the form of: • Decluttering your house, your space, your email inbox or your wallet • Your old mindset and beliefs • Body weight, if you don’t feel good about it (because body fat cells store toxins that have previously entered our life – as environmental toxins,
negative thoughts and yucky emotions) You carry this extra weight in the form of: • Dense or trapped emotions that can flare up; for example, as frustration, anger, sabotage, feeling sluggish or tired • Too much stuff in the house that doesn’t give you joy • Broken things that make you feel shabby or poor • Clutter that annoys you when you look at it or clouds your mind as you think of all the things you still need to get done. Ultimately, it leaves you feeling low, right? It creates a contracting feeling within, as you feel guilty, ashamed or negative about yourself for not having sorted it, done it or let go of it yet. Your mind might be kicking in, asking, “But how can I make it happen?” This creates an extreme contrast to the expansion, lightness and happiness your dream/vision makes you feel. It’s a vibrational mismatch leading to cognitive dissonance, and you’re left

with a sense of heaviness, contraction or being overwhelmed, which makes you feel deflated. So what can you do about it? First, you need to understand that the old you can’t attract what you want (with the old thoughts, stories, beliefs, emotions and messiness cluttering your inner and outer space), otherwise you would have already received it a long time ago. Weight Management became wait management for me WORDS JOHNITA FRANCIS
L
ook, I don’t mean to skite or sound off about any special talent I have, but, I do have a knack for finding any weight that I have lost. So there. I know you are probably jealous of this wonderful gift I have, but it wasn’t always like this. In my younger days, actually until I was about 29, I never had any issues with weight at all, I was 52kg on a skinny day and 56kg on a fat day. I gave birth to my son on November 23rd, 2007 and that is pretty much when it all changed. I had some major drama bringing the little man into the world, long story short, a blood transfusion of the wrong blood type and BAM! Goodbye body. I spent 12 months trying to work out why my body would not just ‘go back’. Finally full of frustration I ventured off to the GP. Eight minutes into the appointment I was given antidepressants and duromine. Feeling unheard and accused of being sad and fat, I sat out the front of the medical
centre, crying. I just had a baby, I didn’t do anything else, what was wrong with my body! I looked up the road and saw a sign stating ‘Naturopath’. Oh. Ok. Can’t be any worse than the treatment I received at the GP. Off I went. Lo and behold, the naturopath had a cancellation and got me straight in for a chat. So apparently when you get the wrong blood type, your own blood type reacts BIG TIME. So for the second time that day I sat and ugly cried. I knew something was not right, I also knew that I was not eating crap, nor avoiding exercise, I also knew I was neither sad nor depressed. I was 90kg for the first time in my life and felt like a stranger in my own body. I developed allergies to fructose and now had thyroid issues all courtesy of the blood transfusion. It took me seven years to get most things back to where they should have been. I have never been back to 56kg ever. The closest I have been is 62kg.
And you know what? I am completely and utterly OK with this. I weight train heavy lift three times a week and run incline five mornings a week. My body may never be the same BUT my mindset has evolved. I go easy on myself. I have always eaten healthy and exercised and both made absolutely no difference whatsoever to my weight, not during those seven years. You know You. You know when something is not right. If your health professional is not listening nor giving you the time and decency you need to work through your weight issues, find someone else. I
have to be honest. Since menopause and living a high-stress lifestyle, I would like to lose about 8-10 kilos. I tend to go round and round in circles, constantly looking for the secret key, the secret diet or the things that work, but in reality, I just like to drink and eat, possibly a fraction too much. One thing I know for myself is that exercising does not help me lose weight. In fact, it makes me hungry. It’s become all so confusing out there that we forget the true key and true goal is to be connected to our body. We know what’s best, I know what’s best – it’s just willpower I completely suck at. I look at my husband who has been a perfect weight his whole life, and the difference between us is he has a

routine. Every morning he wakes up and makes himself a vegan organic porridge with seeds and fruits (he is a vegan). He has a huge vegan lunch, and once again his dinner is always the same food – he doesn’t deviate, three times a day. Extremely healthy and filling. Yet I will miss breakfast, be ravenous by 11 am and make poor choices. Fail to plan, plan to fail. I really do believe this statement is the truth. I’m not one to be giving advice on weight or managing it, but this is the one thing I know works. Preparation and forming a good, constant habit is key. Also, the worst thing I can do for myself and anybody else is to ban a particular food. As soon
as it’s banned, I want it more! Really, gaining weight starts with poor choices and mindset – if I’m stressed I eat, if I’m sad I eat, its just my pattern. Let’s face it, it’s a nice thing to do. I truly believe in my heart and soul, especially as I get older, that to a degree, weight is not important. For instance, I’m going on a five-day escape with my husband where I’ll have to wear swimmers. Normally, I would be thinking about my body in swimmers, but this time I’ve given myself permission to just forget about it. I’m going to 100% enjoy the moment and be comfortable and approving of myself, exactly as I am. www.ecotan.com.au

ood oral health is important to your overall health and weight management. The process of chewing food in the mouth is a mechanical process that needs to be done the right way. Did you know that chewing food and digestion are the same process? Chewing stimulates your salivary glands to release saliva. Saliva contains special chemicals to break down carbohydrates and aid digestion. Chewing your food thoroughly allows your taste buds to signal your brain to communicate with the stomach about the type of food you ingested. In turn, the stomach secretes chemicals and enzymes necessary to digest that particular food. Are there symptoms of not eating properly? Yes, absolutely. We see so many patients who are on acid reflux medication. Of course, chewing properly is not the only reason for reflux but is often a contributor. If you do not chew your carbs thoroughly, you will start experiencing symptoms such as acid reflux, heartburn and sometimes
even constipation. Another symptom of not chewing properly is weight gain. When we talk about chewing properly, we are referring to crushing and grinding your food. Thorough chewing takes time, and when you eat slowly, you feel full faster, which means you take in fewer calories. Of course, the opposite is true too. This brings me to the importance of good oral health and strong teeth and the importance of a balanced or functional occlusion. This refers to the way your upper and lower teeth contact each other when you close your mouth or chew your food and affects the way you smile, speak and eat. When you have a balanced occlusion, you have optimal chewing ability. Besides poor chewing capability, occlusal problems could lead to sensitive or fractured teeth, headaches, neck or jaw pain or muscle tension. Every tooth is vital for the proper alignment of your bite. Teeth support one another and when one is lost and is not replaced it causes the teeth next to it
to shift or tilt into the empty space. The teeth above or below a gap can also start growing downward (or upward) since they have nothing to chew against and can loosen and eventually fall out. With missing teeth, all remaining teeth will be more susceptible to decay and gum disease. Teeth also provide stimulus to bone cells and keep them from dissolving. When a tooth is absent, the bone cells begin to die off. How my
became a
catalyst for change

hen I healed myself naturally from fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis after seven years of chronic illness, I was so angry. I remembered the time I was offered medical retirement (disability pension) – I was 45. Of course, I said “No!” And the time I was referred to a psychiatrist after complaining about severe inflammatory pain in my whole body, every single day. The depression, anxiety and insomnia sent me over the edge, and I contemplated suicide. It was at this point that I knew I had to take control. I left that clinic for good. It took all my strength not to allow the complexity of my situation to take over. I prayed all day, every day, for three days, over and over and over: “Thank you for my healing. Show me the way; I surrender, I’m ready for your guidance, bring me the people.”
I forced myself to eat, and I didn’t sleep much. I held back my tears, resisting the urge to cry because I knew I would collapse and not be able to get back up. Thinking over recent years about all the money I spent on ‘experimental’ alternative therapies that left me more than $10,000 in debt, the jobs I had to leave and the relationships that suffered, it was difficult to stay positive. I realised that autoimmune illnesses are invisible, and this is why I found it difficult to talk about the depth of my suffering. Then the phone rang. It was Ros, my friend of 17 years, inviting me to a health event the next day and I knew I had to go. I had asked for guidance, so I needed to follow through. Was this the answer to my prayers? Yes, it was. I spoke with a doctor who attended the event about my symptoms of memory loss, cognitive issues, trembling, blurry vision, bladder

in your mind a future experience with which you can identify. Every time anxiety comes up in a conversation, it always has negative associations. In truth, anxiety is a rush of energy that’s caused by an emotion or a feeling. Our thoughts create the relevant

emotions, and those emotions create the feelings that are then associated with its biochemical reaction. As humans, we tend to focus on negativity; it’s termed ‘negative bias’. Once upon a time, this was very necessary, as the anxiousness a caveman had helped him stay alert and, more importantly, alive. This type of belief system has become so hardwired into our DNA that we’ve lost the ability to focus on growth, as we’ve been scared into a survival mode. The media doesn’t help, with its mantra of ‘if it bleeds it leads’, so naturally you turn the news on in the morning, and you get primed for a day of negativity. A negative thing may happen, and we immediately react and stress. We continue to think about that experience and stress even more. There’s a part of your brain known as the reticular activating system (RAS) that recognises this pattern and sets itself to scan your day, looking for moments or events to reinforce whatever your current beliefs and emotions are. Your RAS thought all the positive events were not important enough to focus on because they didn’t resonate with your current belief, so it chose to highlight anything that would keep you in your current state of mind. The truth is that your perspective on anxiety has the power to shape
how it impacts you. A recent study in the Journal of Individual Differences found that participants who viewed stressful events as challenges, rather than threats, gained a boost in energy from their anxiety. As a result, their performance improved dramatically, despite its common reputation for being a problematic symptom. I guess what I am saying is if you can use it to your advantage, there is much to gain from how you deal with your anxious state of mind; that is, not allow it to escalate quickly and control you or cause you to suffer for the rest of your life. A way to change the problematic feelings that lead to debilitating anxiety is to change the associated thoughts. Ultimately, this leads to changing your actions because thoughts create feelings that dictate an action. Fear and the perceived possibility of a bad thing happening is usually twice as bad than if the real fear actually happened. That’s because whenever we anticipate anything, the thoughts we project and create will always be an extreme version. Successful people today masterfully use this primitive survival tool and channel that energy towards creating their desired outcome. When you’re able to shift your perception and apply intent, then stress and anxiety become a powerful commodity. That’s because
your subjective mind meets the objective truth, and that revelation will highlight that moment and turn it into an ecstatic experience. Consequently, we then look for the next moment that we can apply this new-found knowledge. Finding your inner calm happens much more easily when you make an active choice to use the agitation or energy that anxiety creates towards your desired and creative purpose. When you can repeat that process, again and again, your body begins to understand that this energy is leverage for getting things done. So this energy no longer brings with it a series of negative imprints but rather a new outlook that is associated with being proactive and productive. The heart chakra –
Anahata

ikipedia suggests that Anahata is the heart chakra. In Sanskrit, Anahata (Nad) refers to the eternal sound, the sound of the celestial realm. Anahata is also associated with balance, calmness, and serenity. The heart chakra became suddenly meaningful when something unexpected happened in my life a short time ago. On a lovely sunny morning, out of nowhere, I had a heart attack. As I rose from bed and my feet touched the ground, I knew something was not quite normal. I wasn’t in pain, but I experienced great discomfort. It felt as if I had a tight band around my chest. After telephoning my son to please come and take care of Buddy, my beloved dog, I called an ambulance to take care of the physical side of what was happening inside my body. While attending to these practicalities, I silently chanted HU – pronounced hue – the ancient eternal sound, which is a part of my daily spiritual practice which I rely on without fail and trust completely. Despite feeling quite sick, I just knew all would be well and I had no need to be concerned. I was soon inside the ambulance, lying on a gurney, being cared for by some efficient and skilled paramedics. The young woman who was ministering to my immediate needs, placed a tiny pill under my tongue, and within minutes I felt much better. Such relief! Free from discomfort, I was able to relax and begin to enjoy this novel situation. After all, I had never had a heart attack before!
I am passionate about living in the moment. This skill has become a part of my life and is as natural to me as breathing. I had no concerns about what had happened, certain as I was that my physical well-being would be looked after at the hospital once we arrived. Living this way has liberated me from unnecessary stress and worries, so despite my circumstances, I was able to bring my attention to the young paramedic and to chat with her about what was on my mind at the time. I told her about a book I had recently published and how most of my time and energy had gone into creating a website and blog to connect with others who might be interested in spirituality as I was. This little incident – the heart attack – might slow me down in achieving what I had planned! She was a good listener, and very interested in spirituality. Soon we were both exploring the purpose of this heart attack. Had it occurred so I could connect with her, talk with her about the book and the spiritual experiences many people have? We had a good laugh at this idea, even though personally, I had seen such ‘coincidences’ often enough to know how very real this can be. Curious to know more, we were soon discussing the difference between belief and experience – two very different things – and how one could distinguish between what was real or not. As we approached the hospital, my companion was looking up the book title on her mobile phone because, by now,
she was determined to read it. No matter how much she tried, somehow, she could not find it. After several unsuccessful results – and feeling a bit silly – I spelled the title to her letter by letter. It was only then the mystery was solved: instead of entering ‘The’ in the search engine, she had been entering the letter ‘Z.’ This is where the magic happened! You see, while the young woman was dumbstruck as to why she would have entered the letter ‘Z’ instead of ‘The’ (stating that her English was pretty good and she had no idea how this had happened), I went on a totally different tangent. Z is short for Wah Z, the spiritual name of my Inner Guide and therefore very meaningful to me. When I am aware of being a conduit for love, connecting soul to soul with another, I suddenly become teary just as I did on this occasion. It’s like an inner sign that Divine Spirit has used me to touch something or someone in a special way. These are tears of love and of joy, like touching the heart of God for a few precious seconds. The day’s event had now become a divine gift. This was the beginning of a few very special days that helped me keep my heart open to find more joyful love, no matter the place or situation. Once again, it was proof that life can be full of amazing adventures when we are able to look at any event from a higher viewpoint. www.myteb.org

A
few months back I remember listening to bestselling author and meditation teacher Jack Kornfield’s podcast. He spoke of a poster that he saw when he was in Santa Cruz many years ago. It was of Yoga Master Swami Satchidananda. The Indian
religious teacher was wearing a loincloth and standing in a yoga posture called tree pose, with one leg up and his hands over his head. He was balancing there on one foot. Jack went on to say that this wasn’t anything unusual – except he is in this pose balanced on a surfboard, riding down a very large wave. Underneath it says in big letters, ‘You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.’ This feels like life itself.
Lately some folks have asked me, “how is it that you are so damn happy all of the time?” “And how come it looks as if all of these changes don’t seem to appear to have hit you?” “Don’t you have off days?” The truth is I have many! Today is one of those days, and on these ‘kind of days’ I understand that it’s in writing, or getting outside and breathing in and out consciously that helps me the most. It’s in the witnessing of the restlessness where I have the chance to get back online. Online with the beating of my heart that I’m so grateful that hasn’t ever given up on me yet! Love is what heals, and by becoming gentler with myself while becoming present to the ‘off-ness’, I usually have the chance to bring in balance and calm. Our humanity unites us and I think there is a natural inclination to want peace. This is a time to come together, pay some visits with our collective fears, uncertainties, hopes and dreams. To do this, I have decided to have a practice around being happy for the simple things – the birds’ song, the trees moving

in the wind, and hearing kids play in the neighbourhood. Inside these simple moments lies the heart of humanity and the love of all beings. Every sound, every taste, touch and feeling, becomes a life worth living, realising that although the yoga postures are important, they are truly just one aspect of the bigger picture for growth and healing. Through being mindful of the body, tension need not be made bigger. Pain in the physical body can become less and less as awareness is brought to the areas that need more breath, acceptance, and unconditional love. A new way of being is born, but it isn’t so much new, as it is a shedding of sorts, being the parts of us that perhaps were never us to begin with. Healing isn’t something that can be forced as it creates a division within, and an uncomfortable feeling inside. I find that the moment I accept something as it is and forgive myself for not being at peace, my non-peace feels seen and heard. In surrendering and being present with my off-ness, I don’t go into selfsabotage mode leading myself down the path of despair. Once I’m feeling more compassionate with myself, it trickles down to the folks around me. Have you ever noticed that the gentler you are with yourself, the easier it is to be you and live in the 1440 minutes in the day? No matter what happens, our soul will never lose any of its luster. We will always be beautiful spirits having this
wild and crazy human experience. The big question is, “How are you being asked to grow?” And, how are YOU riding the waves these days? For me, there are moments of the highest highs, and out of nowhere lower ‘feeling’ days of growth and grief that knock on the door to visit. So, although there is a lot of the root chakra fear stuff going around, the enlightening moments are there too. Fear and love seem so far apart at times where it hurts. Here is what I do know… I am still a work in progress. I am not fully wise. I am contributing to the well-being of the Earth by healing parts of me. I am exactly where I am meant to be with hidden blessings that have not yet been revealed and some days are just plain better than others. Yet overall, I feel my best when I am not jumping back to the past or moving fast into the future. Being attentive to the simplest things in life (to me) is a life well lived. My every day is about to consist of large amounts of time home-schooling my children, as living here in Northern California, we have been in the Shelter In Place mandate since March 16th. Having a regular routine of practising yoga, meditating, chanting and being out in nature as much as possible is what I’ve been self-prescribing myself in the hopes of healing all the negative stuff I’m feeling and seeing.
The waves can be challenging to ride! Fast and furious at times. What seems to help is also sharing my feelings with dear friends whom I know will always be there. Community is everything and to make the effort to connect is important. Hang in there human family, we will get through this! Don’t lose hope! Sometimes it is quite helpful to get a perspective on how far you have come. Have you come to any deep realisations? Have you had some time for reflection? Perhaps give yourself permission for some reflection for a few minutes a few times in a day – to clear and re-boot the mind into the heart’s energy. I sincerely hope that you are getting through these days and are leaning into learning more about who is really inside. Thank goodness we have each other! You are not alone! This time in our lives is valuable and if at all possible, try not to numb yourself away from what you’re feeling. The majority of us have been given the chance to slow down and the others are fighting for their lives, caring for the sick, stocking our shelves, picking up trash, delivering mail, and driving trucks so we don’t ever run out of the essentials. If we could live with our body like animals do... WORDS VIV ADCOCK
M
y dog has no point of view at all about her weight or the shape and size of her body. She doesn’t spend the day looking at herself in the mirror pulling at grey hairs, checking her weight on the scales or wondering if her bum looks too big. When she greets other dogs, she doesn’t compare herself to the other dog’s shape, age, colour or breed. When they meet, dogs don’t look each other up and down and go into that silent dialogue of judgment of the dog in front of them. A greyhound doesn’t say to a dachshund, “Oh look at your little short legs and tiny paws and look at my long lean legs and muscular body”. As nature is allowed to have its course, every animal maintains its natural weight effortlessly. It is humans’ tendency to incorrectly feed or overfeed that causes domestic animals’ weight problems. You don’t see a fat giraffe in the wild! I have adopted a greyhound who came directly from the racetrack. She is still 100% pure athlete, even after eight months into domestic life. She has a unique way of being with her body that has taught me much.
Being a greyhound, she is on the lean side (ribs showing) and not carrying an ounce of extra weight. We often get comments from children saying, “Look at the skinny dog”. In the early days, I was self-conscious about her weight and took it upon myself to try to feed her more. I was projecting my stuff onto her. She graciously showed me very quickly that she knew when she’d had enough to eat and would walk away from food. After having a Labrador who ate everything and anything, including raw broccoli, it was a new experience! She inherently knows how to maintain a bodyweight that works for her, which is different from any other dog I have known. She has taught me to get over

my point of view and honour her awareness. When working with owners about their animal’s weight, it is often the owner’s unconscious need for comfort that leads them to overfeed their pet. It is often misidentified as a kindness to give the pet too many treats. It is not a kindness to the animal if they become overweight. If you asked your animal what it would like to eat and how much, you may be surprised. My dog clearly enjoys the luxury of moving her body and running for the sheer joy of running. What if you allow yourself to enjoy your body – exactly as it is right now?

Food as medicine for dogs WORDS Dr Elaine Cebuliak
T
he Chinese proverb, “you become what you eat” is also true when it comes to feeding our animal friends. Pet foods that are full of harmful pesticides, preservatives, food colouring, and chemicals, have been associated with disease. If you want your fluffy friend to have a shiny healthier coat, with sweeter breath and stools, then make them a wholesome diet. If your pet has particular problems, then there are nutritional treatment guides that you can follow. Below are some suggested recipes. Wherever possible buy organic foods. For overweight dogs substitute brown rice for potatoes and for white rice. Old Dog Bones diet – Arthritis
Step 1 – make the broth – into a large pot place: 12 cups of water 2 cups of oxtails 2 cups of pork soft rib bones 1 cup diced celery 1 tsp ginger powder 4 tbsp fresh basil 6 cloves of garlic Bring to the boil and cook on low heat
overnight or for 10+ hours. Remove the bones and discard, leaving the gel and soft cartilage into the stew. DO NOT FEED COOKED BONES! Step 2 – add the following: ½ cup rice 2 cups carrots 1 cup beets 4 cups greens (chard, beet greens, spinach, broccoli etc) 3 cups of sweet potatoes, diced Enough water to cover 1 cup of liver or heart muscle Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and cook until the rice is done. Store in the refrigerator. Add five tablespoons of cod liver/flax oil once cooled. Treatment for the Skin 1 stalk of Chinese broccoli – gai lan 1 carrot 1 cup Shiitake dried mushroom 3 cloves garlic 5 tbsp flax/fish menhaden oil 2 cups chicken broth (no MSG) 1 tbsp seaweed, daikon or spirulina Slice veggies into pieces, bring chicken broth to a boil, add garlic and mushrooms. Reduce heat and add veggies, steam until soft and tender,
serve over rice. Add ½ teaspoon cod liver/flax oil blend for a 20kg dog size, prior to serving. This is especially good for dogs with skin problems, liver problems and old age. Diet to assist urine incontinence In a large pot with adequate water boil up: 4 cups watercress 1 cup parsley (Italian) 6 cloves garlic 1 cup celery 2 cups Azuki beans ½ cup green onions ½ tsp ginger powder ½ cup dried Shiitake mushrooms 1 cup pearl barley 1 cup green beans 2 cups cabbage 2 cups soup bones Beef, pork, lamb or kidney Fresh sea salt or spirulina or missing link Add ¼ to 1 cup to your regular dog food. animalwellness.com.au

Becoming consciously vulnerable: Energy mastery for sensitive souls WORDS REBECCA-LEE
T
he truth about humans is that we are vulnerable. Vulnerability is our ability to feel and be touched by life around us. No matter how tough, strong or above it all one appears to be, underneath we are all vulnerable to some degree. To protect ourselves, we build walls within our energy body to survive. These walls have kept us safe for a long time; however, after a while, they begin to have consequences, such as not being able to let love in or let love out. These walls rarely come down once we build them. Through my Unlock Your Love Blocks sessions and program, I support people primarily in two ways: 1. To become consciously vulnerable, and 2. To have conscious boundaries. To become consciously vulnerable means we can allow ourselves to feel; to be touched emotionally or spiritually.
We begin to drop many of our ‘walls’ and feel with our hearts. We connect with this vulnerability rather than try to disguise it, hide from it or pretend it is something else. A conscious boundary is the ability to put up an energetic wall when we need it and not let anything come into our field that we don’t want. Energies are coming towards us all the time. This can be extremely overwhelming, especially when you are an energy sensitive person; that is, someone who is vulnerable to energies and can easily feel and be affected by these energies. Being conscious of these energies and knowing when they have entered your field is extremely important to your wellbeing – especially when you are energy sensitive! One of the primary skills you can develop is discerning which energies are yours and which belong to someone else, and then being consciously in

control of what energies come in and what ones stay out.
