This month we feature the work of Don Tolman. I remember attending one of Don’s talks about eight years ago and was chuffed that quite a few family members could come along and share the inspirational experience. Don is not only an internationally renowned whole food expert, he is a man on a global mission to empower people to be educated in the areas of ‘self care’. It’s not just about the whole foods, he also talks about

Don has assisted people all over the world from a wide variety of backgrounds and I remember being in tears at his ‘Bootcamp 4 Brains’ when he showed a video of a lady who had a serious accident which led to her having spinal cord surgery which then resulted in her becoming a T 12 complete paraplegic. With assistance from Don and the wholefood regime suggested, she was able to walk again and live a fully functioning life. Wow! Many thanks to Andrew Dudek for his story on Don Tolman on pages 1415 and look out for the series of articles about Don’s work each month for the rest of the year. Enjoy!

ears ago the thought of drinking a green smoothie would send shivers up my spine, especially something that had raw kale in it! Then when I was around 24, just as my life seemed perfect having found my soulmate, after purchasing my own home, studying at university and working in a well-paid job, I fell ill. It started with my body rejecting many kinds of foods, then I started to rapidly lose weight. I went from 49kg to 42kg in just a couple of weeks, then I started to get the most terrible migraines imaginable where I would just collapse from the pain. I would also get dizzy spells, blurry vision, panic attacks, insomnia and severe anxiety on a daily basis. Not knowing what was wrong with me, I started to develop phobias of everything including my own couch, because it was where I used to lay every time I got sick. Then depression kicked in where I just could not get out of bed and feelings of hopelessness and emptiness would take over any

other emotion. That was the time I said enough is enough and I decided to take my health into my own hands. After seeing a naturopath and holistic doctor I was told that apart from having many food intolerances, I also had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – symptoms included anxiety, blurry vision, dizzy spells, depression. So I embarked on a body healing diet and kicked gluten, dairy and sugar out of my system! But I also realised that I had to put all the nutrients that I lost when I was sick back into my body to help my body heal itself, the way it should. When I started researching what ingredients I needed to heal my symptoms… it came to me… make a smoothie of course! And that was when my obsession to find the perfect smoothie started. The quest began to find the smoothie with all the nutrients I needed but also one that tasted great and gave me sustained energy. So here it is, the smoothie that helped me heal… I hope you enjoy drinking it as much as I do every day!

Dairy-free potato salad RECIPE THE ORGANIC SISTERS

Ingredients: 2 medium sweet potatoes 8 medium white potatoes Extra virgin coconut oil or olive oil 1 cup raw cashews (soaked in water for a minimum of 2 hours and drained) 1 / 3 cup lemon juice 2 tbsp nutritional yeast 1 cup water 6 spring onions (scallions) 2 large handfuls baby spinach leaves or rocket Salt and pepper Method: 1. Place the cashews in a bowl and cover with water. Allow them to soak for at least 2 hours. 2. Preheat the oven to 180°C. 3. Cut the sweet potato and white potatoes into approximately 3cm size pieces (there should be enough to fill 2 large baking trays). Coat

them evenly in the oil. Spread them evenly on baking trays lined with baking paper. Season them with salt and bake for approximately 40-50 minutes or until cooked and golden. 4. While the potatoes are cooling down, drain the cashews well and pop them into a blender along with the lemon juice, nutritional yeast, water and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Blend this all up until smooth and creamy. 5. Place the cooled potatoes into a large bowl along with the spinach leaves and finely sliced spring onions. Pour the creamy cashew mixture straight out of the blender on to the potatoes and stir gently with a wooden spoon until it’s nice and evenly coated. Pop it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

What is P.I.Y. shopping?


ustralian shoppers are leading the way in a retail revolution. As the country becomes increasingly health conscious in its eating habits, and catches onto trends such as quinoa, chia seeds, bee pollen and gluten-free products, the question that many consumers are asking is, “how can we afford them?” “The reason that some health foods are found with such a high price tag in supermarkets is often because the customer pays a premium for the packaging,” says Paul Medeiros, the founder of ‘The Source’, a grocery store with a difference. “As a shopper I was frustrated by the fact that my healthy eating choices seemed to be having a negative effect on my income, and also the environment. At the end of the week I was left with a bin-full of plastic bags and containers. I wished I could just go into a shop and fill up my own container, with the exact amount that I needed.” The Source is a ‘package-it-yourself’

health food store (or P.I.Y.) where over 400 bulk products, including nuts, seeds, grains, muesli, honey, oil and confectionary are stored in bulk food bins. Customers can scoop produce into brown paper bags or containers they bring from home, or purchase glass jars in store to fill. Our range now includes household items and personal hygiene products such as shampoo and conditioner as well. “What we offer is not only more environmentally-friendly, but means that customers can buy exactly as much or as little as they need, rather than being restricted by the number of servings that a supermarket thinks they should purchase,” explains Paul. “It seems like a new idea to some customers, but it’s really an old concept that we want to bring back into fashion. If you think about how our grandmothers used to shop, they would buy only as much as they needed, wrapped in paper or glass jars. We are also very proud of the fact

that every shop is a plastic-bag-free zone.” On the Sunshine Coast there are three ‘The Source’ stores – at Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa. Although Paul believed in the concept of P.I.Y. shopping from the start, he admits that even he was surprised by how customers embraced it. Due to demand they are expanding rapidly, on average opening one new store every month across the country. Interestingly, some of the stores’ biggest fans are mothers. “I think there’s a myth that busy mums rely on supermarkets because they’re fast and convenient,” says Paul, “but we still provide a one-stop-shop for most items on a shopping list, and this is a really fun and interactive way to shop with children, because they love helping to scoop, weigh, and label the items they are bulk buying.” Visit: for a full list of locations.

Creating kindness with our bodies WORDS LUISA TOALDO


ll too often we can become caught up in the stress and fast pace of everyday life and leave our bodies behind. What if you could choose different? What could kindness with your body look like? Kindness with your body doesn’t always have to be black and white. Perhaps one day it is the low-fat green smoothie your body requires. Perhaps another day it could be to drink a little more water. What if you could let go of your expectations of what being kind to your body looks like and actually ask it what it requires? I always assumed kindness to my body was expensive beauty treatments, days lounging around sipping cocktails and relaxing. This of course is a brilliant choice if that is what my body requires for that day, in that moment. Sometimes too though my body loves to move and sweat. A fast-paced boxing

session with sweat pouring off me can feel so nurturing for me and my body when it is what we require. Creating choice can also be a kindness to your body. Asking it what it requires is the first step to a communion and kindness that is harmonious to your body. So how do you know if what you feel is required is true for you? It may be a whisper of a smile across your body, those moments when something just feels lovely and light, that is the truth for you and your body. I have come to know very acutely too, when I have ignored my knowing and my body. Upset tummy, a feeling of discomfort and general ‘just not quite right’ make an appearance. But again this is a chance to express kindness with your body. Thank it for giving you another barometer for which you can tune in and get to know what does and doesn’t work for it. Have you ever had

just too much to drink and woken the next day thinking “Ugh, I’ll never do that again”? Here is another barometer of perhaps how much alcohol your body would like to ingest in that moment. Next time you may now know to ask your body, “One more glass body?” and allow it to honestly let you know what works for it. When you don’t cut yourself off from anything you can experience everything. Being in communion with your body and having kindness for it can allow for new and exciting experiences to show up. When you impose the rules and restrictions, the fun is gone and the chance for choosing no longer exists. So what if kindness with your body could create the change you have been seeking? hese days it seems so many more children are suffering with autism spectrum disorders, ADD or ADHD, temper tantrums and general moodiness. Personally I would rather not label them, the truth of the matter is children’s behaviour is changing, and you have to wonder why? There are many theories based around it, let’s look at two of the many primary areas that I would focus on addressing. HAVE YOU HEARD OF PYROLURIA? It is a metabolic condition where the person does not optimally absorb or utilise key nutrients that are needed for the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. This happens when the body produces molecules called pyrroles. These pyrroles act like magnets to many vitamins and minerals. Children with pyroluria may present with agitation, anxiety, bed wetting, clenching jaw, lack of focus, frequent tantrums, overwhelmed easily,

afraid of groups, eczema and poor sleeping patterns. The reason is these are influenced by neurotransmitters, however, with pyroluria the balance can be thrown out as a result of nutrient imbalance. My husband was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADD as a child, we have had him tested as an adult and no surprise he had a high pyrrole reading. As an adult he has responded amazingly well using the pyrrole treatment of nutritional supplementation of vitamin B6 and zinc, I only wish it was tested when he was younger. This is an area of my work that I am incredibly interested in because so many of my patients have pyroluria. A simple urine sample is all that is needed to test pyrrole levels. TREAT THE GUT World renowned Dr Natasha McBride, author of Gut & Psychology Syndrome (also known as GAPS) treats an array of childhood conditions like those listed above purely by addressing the digestive function of the child.

The program usually comprises of bone broths, fermented foods and the elimination of foods like grains. She is a pioneer in this area, the protocol is very similar to what I offer children and families daily in the clinic. So why do we address the gut? Easy – bacteria influence the mind, the gut influences your neurotransmitters and the gut is where we absorb nutrients. There are countless strains of bacteria that are documented to influence the function of the brain, for this reason correcting any digestive problems is so important. I would usually encourage this through stool testing and then balancing the gut flora through probiotic supplementation, dietary changes and fermented foods. These few areas are just the tip of the iceberg. Areas like the child’s immunity, heavy metals, histamine levels, life circumstances, pre existing conditions like autoimmune disease all need to be addressed.

Holistic Bliss is honoured to exclusively present to its readers “Quintet – The Tolman Interviews.” It’s Don Tolman like we’ve not quite seen before; a five-part series of discussions covering five unique but indivisible aspects of our health, harmony and happiness. Here now, is Part 1 (The Body)… ANDREW: You are an outspoken advocate against the political push towards “mandating” vaccines via legislation, both in the USA and now in Australia. In Queensland today, the various vaccine manufacturers’ own published ingredients in flu vaccines currently being administered contain Octoxinol 9 and Octoxinol 10 – known spermicides and sterilising agents. What possible reasons are there for such ingredients to be injected into a person’s bloodstream? (Don looks at the manufacturers’ ingredients list, and ruefully shakes his head.) DON: The vaccine industry is probably one of the darkest, most ridiculous industries that has ever been forced upon the people. These ingredients… are meant to create sterility in the male and the female. So, if you want to have a baby, they’ll want you to spend 20 or 30,000 thousand dollars for IVF, because that’s another industry that’s on the rise, and they’re doing everything they can to promote it. They don’t want people to get pregnant without having to pay them… so that’s ultimately, I kid you not… the very basis of this. The word vaccin-ium was used in classical Latin – it was a type of berry. To vaccinate used to mean, literally, to eat berries, because when we look into this, the berries that come forth in the spring… are Nature’s Vaccines! So whenever the berries are on, go get

them. Eat as many of them as you can, and you will have absolutely no worries. Some people typically just don’t understand their own bodies. If you have a house (a body) you better open the “flu”, to let all the gasses and poisons out! Your body “flus” or vents, 24 hours a day. What’s interesting is that, if your body isn’t venting enough, through lack of water, walking, fresh air, sunshine, or not enough plant-based foods… then that’s actually called “influenza”, which means… “not venting”! The flu is not some horrible, mysterious disease… it’s your body cleaning house, and protecting you. Just keep drinking liquids… and puking! ANDREW: Allergies are seemingly on the rise. “Elimination and Allergy Diets” actually encourage us to ingest MSG, colours, preservatives, benzoates, nitrates, sulphites, sweeteners… even pink musk sticks! What’s the “answer” to allergies? DON: They just love the idea of “fighting” a disease; everything is a “war” and so we suck in and fall for it. When it comes to allergies (say pollen, or mites)… you just need to make your own salt water nasal spray! Get a little bit of peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree, put a lot of salt water with it, and suck it in through the nasal passages, and if you’re able to, swallow a little as well. The body’s immune system will strengthen… and you will get over the allergies. ANDREW: What about food allergies? DON: The number one cause of food allergies is taking too many antibiotics at an early age. The way to overcome the allergies is through small, teeny tiny dosages. Put the food, or the seed, or the nut, whatever, on your lips. You lick your lips… and eventually spit it out. Do this for seven days, eventually swishing it around, then spitting it out. A week later, you actually swallow the particle and follow up with a glass of water. ANDREW: What about household chemicals? DON: With things like formaldehyde in our carpets, bedding etc, you get… an onion, slice it in half, and put it in each room! Through an electromagnetic force, that onion will attract all of the particles in the air, even dust mites. Keep it going for about seven days, thinly slicing the

onion layers off regularly and throwing them in the rubbish! ANDREW: What, generally, leads to physical sickness and/or disease in your opinion? DON: All sickness is due to one, or both, of the following: toxicity, or deficiency. This applies equally to say, toxicity in our relationships. Or a deficiency in things that nurture our hearts and souls… like actually pausing to smell the roses, and feeling the radiance of the sun on our bodies. Fasting, for example, is one of the most powerful ways to exorcise our “demons”, whether by way of a water fast, juice fast, or a “mono fast” (consuming only one type of fruit or vegetable for an extended period). Our stools, breath, urine, skin, mood, body odour and state of wellbeing will tell us with great accuracy whether we need to fast. This includes addictions! Can you fast from Facebook for a week? If not, you’re addicted to it! ANDREW: Please share with us some more of your thoughts about the Peaceful Revolution. DON: I’ve seen more of it happening in the last six or seven years than I ever have in my entire life. A lot of these (former) doctors, oncologists, and researchers are quitting their careers, and/or doing documentaries, and getting “the message” out there. Two documentaries that come to mind are “Bought” and “The Truth about Cancer”. raditionally the word Medicine meant ‘to make whole and complete’. Plato, a mathematician and writer of the philosophy stated ‘to heal is to make whole, the entire mind/ body/spirit. To cure is to eliminate or relieve immediate distress.’ When I was nursing I found the medical system wanted to cure but forgot to assist the process of making a patient whole. A heartfelt memory for me whilst nursing was Mr Banks (name changed). He was a diabetic patient whom repeatedly was admitted for diabetic leg ulcers and weight reduction. Mr Banks had been with us for many months as we assisted him with wound care. He seemed to be happy and enjoyed his food. He knew the medical routines and each of the medical staff history as he took the time to get to know them. He practised whole-istic care. This particular evening I did not finish my shift until 11pm. All the patients were mostly asleep. Mr Banks was due to go home the next morning. He had lost 22kg and his leg ulcer was nearly healed. As I did my rounds with my torch

to check on patients, I noted Mr Banks agitated. I found him digging at his wound with a fork and making it bleed. I switched on his light and sat on his bed to talk to him about what was happening and dressed his fresh wound. It was time for the whole-istic approach with no judgment from me. That is when Mr Banks shared he was more happy in hospital as he got fed, had company and was given love and support in the form of attention to his wound. My heart connected to his and I could feel his pain and isolation. He shared that he would make a wound to get back in to hospital so he could be cared for. Mr Banks gifted all of us whole-istic care and yet as the medical system we had not done that for him. So that night I sent notes to relevant staff to organise support for Mr Banks at home. I reassured Mr Banks that he will have a different situation when going home. The other important factor for me was to ensure Mr Banks knew I did not judge him for his act. Let’s now go back to the word

MEDICAL … to make whole and complete. What if we allowed and provided situations and circumstances for people to feel whole and provide wholeistic care for people, animals, plants and the earth? I know the world would be so different and that there would not be disease. Remember you are already perfect just in different stages of remembering. with your body


o often we set out to do what we can to have a greater sense of peace, possibility, joy and ease in our lives, but in the process we are either trying to drag our bodies in the direction we decided they need to go, which means we decide what is good for them, or try to dominate or override our bodies, or we are judging our body and the ‘issues’ we think we have with it, making ourselves the victim of our body and believing we are less capable of creating the changes we desire as a result. Either way, these situations illustrate how we make ourselves either greater or lesser than our bodies, rather than equal with it. You are not your body, but you have a body. Have you considered that your body has its own consciousness and capacities, and a

desire to contribute to you and your life beyond your wildest dreams – if you let it? What would you have to be or do differently to have an equal 50/50 partnership with your body? What if you started to ask your body what it knows about what it desires and requires? What does it desire to contribute to you that you have been ignoring? increases dynamically. What if you began every day by asking, body, what could I contribute to you today? What do you desire to contribute to me? What could we create together that would be joyful, fun and invite more money? If you really want true freedom, and to have everything that is possible in life, you have to have consciousness with your body and as well with your being. e as humans spend our entire life making decisions on what to eat every day. An activity most of us think we consciously make and control, right? But perhaps the gut and its multitude of bacteria, what we eat and feed these bacteria is more important than we think. In her new book, ‘Gut: the Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ’, German microbiologist Giulia Enders, gives us a fascinating insight into our last taboo, our gut and poo. In her book, the way the gut works is explained and the influence it has on our wellbeing and health. The gut-brain connection is the new field of research in modern medicine and in the last ten years, hundreds of academic articles have been published. Two-thirds of our immune system and 95 per cent of the serotonin we produce is made in the cells of the gut. Who hasn’t felt irritable when we haven’t eaten for a while,


there’s no doubt our gut can affect our mood. The type of foods we eat, the amount of antibiotics we take and how we eliminate can all affect our digestive system. Enders suggests that we start with eating prebiotic foods; whole foods with plenty of fibre and resistant starches. But for these prebiotic foods to support and feed the good bacteria we need to have the good bacteria already present in the gut. This is where the probiotic bacteria come in. Many cultures worldwide have some form of probiotic, German sauerkraut, Korean kimchi, Indian lassi all contain the good bacteria beneficial for your gut. Adding these types of foods to your diet daily will populate the gut with these good bacteria. These good guys then populate the intestines and force out bad bacteria. The roles these good and bad bacteria can have on mood and wellness is just being understood.

So we got the energy and nutritional goodies from the probiotic and prebiotic food and the gut has digested it. Great, now the icky bit no one talks about! Faeces are made up mainly of water but one third of the solid part is dead bacteria. This dead gut flora is mixed up with indigestible vegetable fibre and toxins the body needs to get rid of; food colorants, waste medicines or cholesterol. Stuff we don’t want in us! Enders recommends squatting with a footstool to eliminate our waste, explaining the way the puborectalis muscle relaxes in this posture and the health benefits of eliminating this way. She cites evidence of less gut diseases in countries that still squat to go. The western medical world is just beginning to correlate diet, gut health and toileting posture as integrated for total wellness.

any of us spend too much precious time beating ourselves up. We ask ourselves, “What is the right thing to do?” We worry about whether we are eating the right foods, saying the right thing to our children, loving a partner the right way, doing the right thing for work. To add to the list of benefits, soluble fibre “mops up” low density lipoproteins, also known as LDL or bad blood cholesterol, as it binds to this “bad” cholesterol and assists its removal from the blood. Soluble fibre can be found in: apples, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, psyllium, cucumbers and celery.




There are two forms of fibre obtainable from the diet; insoluble and soluble fibre. These fibres have differing effects, though are both beneficial to health.

Insoluble fibre is (you guessed it!) unable to dissolve in water and passes through the digestive tract relatively undigested. It is this type of fibre which is responsible for building the bulk of the stool, therefore assisting healthy bowel function, as well as increasing the transit time of food and waste through the gastrointestinal tract. Insoluble fibre acts as a prebiotic that feeds probiotics which make up the healthy microflora of good bacteria in the intestinal tract. Maintaining a healthy microflora is essential for optimal digestion, immune function, and maintaining healthy bowels and colon.

Insoluble fibre can be found in: onions, tomatoes, cabbage, celery, silverbeet, spinach, beet greens, and bok choy. Adults need approximately 35 grams of fibre per day. PROTEIN Protein is an essential nutrient required by the body for energy, muscle maintenance, growth, repair, and structural support. The word protein, in a nutritional aspect, tells us that this nutrient contains long chain amino acids. There are nine essential amino acids, meaning they are unable to be synthesized within the body and must be obtained from the diet. These include: phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine and histidine. These amino acids must be present in a certain amount to make up a “complete protein�. Animal meat, eggs and specialist protein powders are a complete protein. Quinoa, buckwheat, hemp seed, chia seeds, soy, and mycoprotein (called Quorn) are all complete vegetarian proteins. Vegetarians can also use protein combining methods to ensure they are getting adequate protein. One of the most common things I see in my practice is inadequate protein intake in teenagers and those going through periods of convalescence. Each 1kg of weight requires approximately 0.8grams of protein daily. You can figure

out your ideal base protein requirement by multiplying your ideal weight by 0.8g (eg 80kg x 0.8 = 64g protein required daily). Note: These ideal measurements will change with weight loss programs and age. POTASSIUM AND SODIUM Potassium is an alkalizing mineral which plays a role in cardiovascular function, blood pressure regulation and maintenance of a healthy pH within the body, amongst many other things. Sodium is an acidic mineral, important for adrenal function and hormone synthesis, as well as cardiovascular function. To promote detoxification through alkalization, support healthy cardiovascular and kidney function, and overall health, these


minerals must be present in a ratio of 5:1 in favour of potassium. An imbalance in this potassium/sodium ratio can promote many health complications such as hypertension (high blood pressure), cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, kidney stones and stomach ulcers. Many people fear salt and avoid its consumption. This is not a healthy decision, as salt is still very much required by the body! Processed foods are rich in salt, as it acts as a preservative. One of the best ways to correct your sodium/potassium balance is to reduce and avoid processed, packaged foods and increase your green leafy vegetable consumption. Swap your table salt for Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salt, which contain trace elements and a small amount of potassium. Potassium and sodium can be found in a ratio of 5:1 in apples, asparagus, beef, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, grapefruit, onion, orange, papaya, spinach, strawberries and tomatoes, to name a few. I believe the most important thing about food, and yourself, is understanding the magic within. Knowing what is in your food, and what your body requires, allows us to make better nutritional decisions, and help us learn how to use food to nourish and heal us.

I’ve had an avalanche of questions and interest about Happy Mouth Generative Energetic Dentistry and it’s clearly not just about having perfect sparkly whites! What does the mouth represent? For many people the smell of the dentist’s office and the sound of the drill is enough to induce anxiety and stress! So what is the Happy Mouth System and what does it cover? Dr Tom Kolso has been a practising dentist in the US for over twenty years. Put a note in your phone in one week’s time and ask yourself this question, “What difference have I seen in my money over the past week?” To make a real difference to your money, don’t focus on money only, go to the root of the ‘vibration’ and focus there.

Shungite:Origins of the healing stone WORDS RICHARD GILES


he previous article in July’s edition about shungite covered the Russian health research work on the stone. The first congress on shungite in 2006 sharing scientific work on its properties was held in the town of Petrozavodsk, Karelia, near to where much of the shungite deposits come from. The origins of shungite probably go back to up to two billion years ago. According to Russian geologists, sediments of unicellular organisms mixed with mud and silt formed sediment layers that accumulated in the Karelian region in an environment of brackish water saturated with minerals and salts. Compression forced these layers to sink and subterranean volcanic activity added heat and this transformed organic materials into other forms responsible for the creation of the molecular structure of fullerenes (soccer ball like structures). What is most fascinating for me is that shungite’s early formation is much, much older than coal and oil. The main deposits are found in

only one place on earth – in Karelia near Lake Onega (N.west Russia) and amount to about 9,000 square kilometres of deposits. Most of it was found near the surface in the past, but today it’s found about 200 metres below the surface. It was given the name shungite by a Russian geologist, Alexander Inostranzeff in about the mid1880s. I looked at its health effects and the bio-energetic properties last month, those that enable shungite to protect the body from electromagnetic fields (EMF and EMR). One of the fascinating effects involves shungite tiles added to the walls of a room and the room used for dealing with stress, cardiovascular problems and trauma. Several health care establishments in Russia, and now in France as well, have developed rooms that are tiled with shungite. Health rooms in hospitals, in military establishments and in prisons have been established in Russia to treat stress, hypertension and heart problems. In 2006 a shungite room in the

Voennomeditsinsky Health Academy tested patients on a treatment programme. They had conditions ranging from hypertension, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and coronary heart disease. Results indicated that some 80% of the patients showed various levels of improvement in their conditions. Up to 40% showed significant decreases in all problematic health conditions. Several Russian health establishments such as spas, have shungite rooms and so does the Military Academy of Medicine in St Petersburg. Those rooms have been used for a variety of health conditions including the treatment of diabetes and respiratory tract problems as well as those mentioned above. With its water purification properties, its role in protection from EMF and its role in dealing with a number of health issues, shungite can be truly called a wonder healing stone. he had us at hello! Actually I felt I was being ‘worked on’ before I arrived for the one-day experience on the 28th June in Brisbane, as I didn’t sleep well the night before (which is unusual for me) and didn’t eat much breakfast in the morning (also a rare thing). However, when my partner and I arrived at the Brisbane Convention

Centre and found our seats, I felt a serene energy permeating the room which remained there for the whole day. I was curious about what would unfold and just so damn grateful to be there! The energy created in the room, allowed a lot of things to surface and a large number of people in the audience felt safe to share, ask questions and transform. Marianne referred many times to ‘A Course in Miracles’ and quoted a variety of spiritual teachers.

She read the energy of every situation and connected with everyone in the room in an honouring way, so it was quite extraordinary to watch her speed of response and the care and wisdom behind it. She looked ageless. Marianne’s view is simple, there are only two emotions: fear and love, and the type of love that has no opposite, is all that is real, and is who we all really are. When we are connected to love, God, Source whatever you like to call it, life becomes a flow and an ease… miracles occur! She said, “Enlightenment is not a learning – it’s unlearning the thoughts of fear this realty has taught us.” So it’s been a few days since the event, and I’ve noticed any ‘petty’ thoughts that enter my head seem to fade away more quickly. My partner and I have reflected on different parts of Marianne’s talk quite frequently, which is so amazing to share together… there was a lot covered in one day, but we were not left overwhelmed or tired, it was more like being nourished on all levels. All I am left with right now is, please Universe keep showing me the truth of who I am, in every moment… and then it’s my job to choose it! Yoga and Kahuna –

Pathways to Enlightenment



ong before I met the Kahuna, Abraham Kawai’i, and began my traineeship with him, I’d been involved in the Yoga community through the practise of asana. I loved the physical creativity I got from learning to perform new gestures with my body. It was the first time in my life I felt I had something that belonged only to me that I had complete control of. I was empowered and became adept, but off the mat my life was out of control and heading for a crash. I met the Kahuna in the late 1990s and found the connection I’d missed in my Yoga training that enabled me to expand the ownership of my body/life off my mat, out of the classroom and into my everyday life. However, I believe that without one, I wouldn’t have the other… two decades ago my Yoga teacher recommended I learn massage which

eventually led me to the Kahuna. For a few years after I started training with the Kahuna, I stopped practising asana, wanting to delve deeply with open heart and mind into the universe of the ancient Kahuna until one day I decided to begin a regular home asana practise again. My Kahuna teacher had shown me through example the sanctity of my life by inspiring a consciousness of my body as a sacred vessel, the home of my eternal spirit and because of this I found my relationship with asana had changed, became slower and deeper. What surprised and delighted me most was this expansive awareness of myself in motion stayed with me, off the mat, out of the classroom and into my regular life routines. The knowledge and wisdom Yoga offers us can be paralleled with the ancient wisdom and knowledge of the

Kahuna. Both recognise the divinity residing within us and seek to bring the physical into harmony with the spiritual. Both recognise the body as the container of our spirit and through the expansion of our physical range of motion, in their own unique and complimentary ways, can change our life to one that is lived to the full instead of one that is endured. id you know there is nothing actually wrong with you and that you were born perfect and will die perfect? You are whole and complete on all levels including when you have disease. We forget that we are excited and eager as a soul to enter this earth world and experience duality, pain, love and so much more. This concept is something the new generation of children have an innate understanding of and was brought through my awareness when I nursed Bianca. When I was nursing, I was blessed to have been a part of Bianca’s life for a few hours. You see she was born with no brain but was alive and breathing. Her parents were shocked and in grief. The medical staff were also feeling that way too. There was a part of the medical system that wanted to know more about Bianca and do investigatory tests to learn more. For me it was about Bianca and her parents experiencing an whole-istic approach to this situation. I sat with the

parents and held Bianca as they were a little frightened of hurting her. The sheer delight and gift Bianca gifted me and the connection of pure absolute love was extraordinary. I could feel Bianca and this divine sense of perfection and divinity. She knew she was whole and complete as intended and created. She was strong and I could feel her purpose. Bianca was a divine rainbow child. Her parents were rattled as you can imagine. It was important that they connected with her and ‘listened’ to her. I said “talk to Bianca and share what your thoughts are, what your fears are, tell how much you have waited for her, and anything else you want to tell her.” There were tears of joy and sadness from both parents and yet Bianca seemed to be at absolute peace with the whole approach and circumstance. She was teaching an whole-listic approach to the parents, the family and medical staff which is normal for a rainbow child. The heartfelt connection was a sense of acceptance in this process and the family were looking at the situation as perfect.

esearch is showing that the level of endocrine disorders is at an all time high. In fact, male semen quality has reduced 40% to what it was years ago, genital malformation in baby boys has increased by 400% according to the World Health Organization report of 2012 and we are on the tip of the iceberg in relation to the level of these disorders in society. Is it just my kids I should be concerned about? Everyone should be concerned about this. With the high level of infertility and the alarming rate of chronic illness our children are experiencing (for example one in 66 American school-aged children have autism; research is showing the actual figure to be 1 in 38), some researchers are saying that we are the only species actively contributing to our own extinction and that if we continue on the trajectory we are on, it may well be the next of the generation after that who

will be the last to have children. On average there are around 200+ chemicals in breast milk globally and babies’ umbilical cords around the world also have on average of 200+ chemicals. Is it any wonder our chronic disease rates are so high not only in adults but in children – it never used to be that way! Preconception care is paramount to having healthy children and this preconception care needs to start by avoiding the mostly untested chemicals from a young age, not simply just during pregnancy. During pregnancy we pass our fatsoluble chemicals onto our children. Babies unfortunately are being born pre-polluted because their mums are polluted. The greatest way to prevent this is to remove toxic chemicals from our lives, especially from our children, as their little bodies are not equipped to detoxify (their detoxification ability is not that of an adult until around seven years of age) and their endocrine

systems are not developed. Sadly, to make matters even worse, we are giving birth to pre-polluted children and then without understanding the impact whatsoever, we are lathering them with additional chemicals when their little bodies are ill-equipped to handle the exposure. Things have to change, but to change, people need to be educated. ose is well renowned for its beauty, grace and exquisite aroma. It was one of the first flowers from which an essential oil was ever distilled way back in the tenth century. It is a flower that has been highly revered and used throughout history. Perhaps Cleopatra is one of the best examples. The story goes… to lure Mark Antony she had her ship rubbed down in rose wax, the sails dipped in rosewater and hundreds of exquisite rose petals strewn across the bedroom! There are different types of mites that cause mange in dogs – the most common being sarcoptic (sarcoptes scabei) and demodectic (demoxex canis). Chronic mange can be very debilitating to an animal and symptoms may include depression, lethargy, severe itching, anaemia, hair loss and thickening of the skin. Sarcoptic mange (also known as scabies), is caused from mites that burrow under the skin. Itching can be intense, causing inflammation and

infections to develop. Sarcoptic mange is contagious and the dog is best kept isolated from other dogs until successfully treated. If you have more than one dog that is constantly itchy, then it may be due to sarcoptic mange. All dogs’ bedding should also be washed thoroughly. Sarcoptic mange can cause a skin rash on people also, but the mites cannot live on humans for more than a few weeks. Demodectic mange is caused from a mite that lives in the hair follicles and can cause great discomfort and irritation to the host. It is more common in young or elderly animals and particularly those that have been recently vaccinated. It appears as a bald patch or thinning of the hair usually on the head around eyes, lips and mouth or neck area and can occur on the legs, paws and trunk in severe cases. It can often clear up without treatment by the time the animal reaches one to two years of age. There are two forms of demodectic mange – squamous and pustular. In the squamous form, the hair falls out in patches leaving dry lesions that may become inflamed and swollen. The

pustular form may result from a bacterial infection when the skin becomes thickened and inflamed. Demodectic mange is an immune deficiency disease and may or may not cause itching. A skin scraping will confirm if your dog has the condition. Demodectic mange can be localised with only one area affected, usually around the eyes, lips or mouth with hair thinning in these areas. It may however become generalised and spread over the body in multiple areas causing hair loss with crusty sores. In my experience, it is essential to treat a dog with mange both internally and externally. A natural, raw food diet is the best defence for building a healthy immune system with added supplements to support healing including vitamin C, antioxidants and vitamin B complex. I have had great success using homeopathic remedies to treat animals for a variety of conditions, including mange. part of my treatment for mange which are given internally to help with skin infections and to strengthen the immune system in conjunction with anti-parasitic herbs applied externally on affected areas of the skin. I also use a lemon rinse for external treatment. The recipe is a simple one and is as follows: Chop up around six or more lemon skins and one whole lemon. Fill a large saucepan with about five litres of water

and bring to the boil. Simmer just until the peel is mushy. Remove from heat, cover and allow to cool before straining into a sealable jar for storing in the fridge. Apply the solution liberally to affected areas (avoiding face and eyes) and leave to dry on the skin. Use once daily for at least 10 days. I have found that alternating the lemon rinse with external herbal solutions gives the best results. (The lemon rinse should not be used on cats.)

Mange can be very debilitating for some dogs and many of the conventional treatments used are quite harsh, so it is worth looking at a more natural approach that supports your dog’s immune system rather than weakening it. DO YOU SUFFER WITH IBS? Cramping, gas, reflux, irregular bowel movements and constant bloating? Food sensitivities, allergies and intolerances These symptoms suggest that you are reacting or sensitive to something, but what? The digestive system is basically a long tube, so inflammation is often generated from something that has entered from the outside. What does the gut carry? Food! So it is more than likely that something you are eating is reacting. Even if it is seemingly healthy. Many people will cut out gluten and dairy, but still have reactions. Perhaps you are reacting to the gluten free products? Many people don’t consider vegetables as intolerances, but they certainly can be. These foods can activate the “hypersensitive” part of your immune system. This response does not always become evident straight after you eat the food. This makes it very hard to identify what the reactant food is. Reactant foods can damage the gut lining and this can cause irritation and lowered nutrient absorption.

Microbial imbalance Bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites could all potentially be causing your symptoms. You have trillions of bacteria in your gut and they can easily become imbalanced. A condition known as small intestinal dysbiosis (or SIBO) is characterised by excess bloating usually caused by an imbalance in bacteria. There are bacteria that help with the breakdown of carbohydrates, some fibres and other protein. When there is not enough of the “good guys” in there you will experience increased gas, reflux and bloating because the other bacteria will ferment your food and produce gas. Fatigue, foggy mind, irritation and poor motivation can be secondary symptoms of SIBO. There are tests that can determine the level of SIBO. If the food is not being broken down properly in the small intestines the large intestines have too much work placed on them and hence Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may develop. The role of bacterial imbalance in IBS and SIBO is very well documented and recognised in both Naturopathic and Conventional Medicine.

Hypochloridia and low digestive enzymes Hypochloridia is low stomach acid. Stomach acid is essential for breaking down proteins and it starts the whole digestion process off. There is a belief that reflux is caused by too much stomach acid, when in fact it may be from not enough stomach acid. If stomach acid is low, it opens the digestive system to bacteria that alter our digestion, in particular fermentation and breakdown of carbohydrates. This can produce lots of gas and cause changes in bowel movements. Hypochlorydia can also cause iron and B12 deficiency, leading to fatigue and anaemia. Enzymes help us break down foods and absorb the nutrients. Many people pass undigested food or have irregular bowel movements because they are lacking sufficient levels of the enzymes required. Food that does not digest correctly and travel through the digestive tract in a timely manner can feed bacteria, giving rise to bloating, brain fog, fatigue and cramping to name a few.

Stress When you are exposed to stress, trauma or illness your body’s hormones cortisol and adrenaline become out of balance. This greatly influences bowel movements as it can cause damage to the cells that line the gut. We know the feeling of “butterflies” in the tummy or nausea when we are nervous so we know there is a gut:brain connection. When you are stressed your body is unable to heal properly and digest food efficiently. Ironically, to have a happy mind you need to have a happy gut! In an article I was reading, Dr Gershon, from University of Columbia, states that 95% of serotonin is made in your gut, this is your happy, feel good neurotransmitter!
