A view from the past Nenagh is the second largest town in the county of Tipperary, and does a thriving trade. The town was at once time a stronghold of the Butlers. It possesses few antiquities, the ‘Nenagh Round,’ the circular keep of the castle of the Butlers, and one of the largest and most notable structures of its kind in the island, being, perhaps, the most interesting feature. It was built in the time of King John. Between it and the courthouse stands the townhall, a modern structure of handsome design. Nenagh was converted into an assize town some years ago, previous to which a summons to court involved a journey of nearly 140 miles. The name is derived from the Irish word N’Aenach, signifying The Fair, and even at the present day it is the seat of one of the largest yearly “fairs” in the south of Ireland. from Atlas and Cyclopedia of Ireland (1900)

Lady Wilde

“ Patricia Leventon’s one woman show portrays the life of Lady Wilde in an imaginative and informative style. This show provides great insight about Oscar’s life and the influence of his mother.” Belfast Telegraph Courageous and strong minded, Wilde’s mother defied her family’s pro-Union politics and under the name of Speranza, electrified Ireland with her passionate tirades in verse and prose against the English. She married the brilliant surgeon Dr William Wilde, later knighted by Queen Victoria. At one point she bravely defended him in a libel case that was the sensation of Dublin, and foreshadowed her son Oscar’s trial some thirty years later. Witty, often outrageous, with very strong feminist views, she was most memorable in the midst of literary companions. Former Royal Shakespeare Company actor Patricia Leventon captures her in full flight. Thursday 8 September 8pm Admission =C10

The Irish health system, what lies ahead for national and local services?’ While it is not possible to predict what will actually happen the public health system in Ireland in the years ahead, including hospitals such as Nenagh, the Programme for Government and recent announcements by Minister James Reilly give us a pretty good idea of what direction he wants to go. Whether these plans are possible in the context of the austerity imposed on the country through the EU/IMF/ECB deal remains to be seen. This talk will explore how we got the unequal, inefficient system that we have and make some suggestions for the future which could ensure a quality, universal public health system. Sara Burke is a journalist, broadcaster and health policy analyst. She has a weekly health slot on RTE Radio 1’s Drivetime programme. Her book on the Irish health system Irish Apartheid, Healthcare Inequality in Ireland, was published by New Island in 2009. Wednesday 23 November 8pm Admission FREE

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Dir. Werner Herzog | France, Canada, USA, UK, Germany 2010 | 90mins | Cert G Having gained unprecedented access and overcome considerable technical challenges, Werner Herzog has captured on film, the interior of the Chauvet Cave in southern France. This is where the world’s oldest cave paintings – hundreds in number – were discovered in 1994. He reveals to us a breathtaking subterranean world and leads us to the 32,000-year-old artworks. We come face to face with pristine and astonishingly realistic drawings of horses, cattle and lions, which for the briefest seconds come alive in the torchlight. Herzog’s engaging narration weaves in wider metaphysical contemplations as we learn more about the Paleolithic art and its creators.
