FILM The Bealtaine Festival presents

The Glenn Miller Story

Dir: Anthony Mann | USA | 1954 | 113 mins | Cert: G

Starring James Stewart as the famous band leader, The Glenn Miller Story traces Miller’s rise from pit-orchestra trombone player to head of the most successful big band of his era. Given an officer’s commission during World War II, Miller helmed the swingin’est military band ever heard. Stewart, looking remarkably like Miller, is disarmingly eccentric. Henry Mancini was the movies musical director leading a credible homage to Miller’s particular sound. Watch out for Louis Armstrong leading a jam session on Basin Street Blues in a speakeasy in Harlem, and singer Frances Langford doing Chattanooga Choo-Choo in a well-boned strapless dress. Thursday 16 May 11am Admission FREE

The Legend of Luke Kelly On 30th January 1984 it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Luke Kelly. He has left an indelible mark as being the greatest folk artist of the 20th Century. The Legend of Luke Kelly show has amazed audiences following sell-out performances in many Irish venues. Lead singer, Chris Kavanagh bears a remarkable resemblance to Luke while his singing talents capture the depth and passion of the great man. He is joined on stage by accomplished musicians who all consider it an honour to bring Luke’s memory to the stage in the ultimate tribute to the King of Balladeers. Saturday 18 May 8pm (Doors 7.15pm) Admission =C20
