PURPLE REIGNS SAM FENDER I’M A BELIEVER TWENTY FOUR
Photography: Paul Gulliford

The NELove front cover shoot came about way back in February this year and as we are Loreal’s first and only Flagship Salon in Newcastle upon Tyne we were aware of their brand new colour release #colourfulhair in advance so it was great fun to get to play with it. We also needed our own Salon images and nothing says professional like using your own images on your salon marketing material! It’s all very well using stock pictures but we wanted something that made a statement about us and the products and equipment we use.

Preparation started back in February to clean out Embers hair following a previous colour that had stained that she had done elsewhere. Every month we worked at cleansing the hair until the time was right and the base was perfect. Always with the condition in mind we kept on using smart bond. Finally we got there and then

it was time to organise the shoot. Have you tried to get 2 models, one photographer, one makeup artist, a photo studio and a space in my own work schedule all together at the same time..... It’s no mean feat but I did it working late into the night the day before and also on the day of the shoot.

I’m so happy with the end result it’s modern, it’s fashion, it’s what we do and who we are..... Come along and find out yourself l

ELLO THERE NE LOVERS

Did you miss me?

I feel like I don’t want to bore you by repeating yet again the very ethos of NE Love magazine but sadly it seems that I must with the same pull quote from our media info that I wrote almost three years ago. Here it is;

NE LOVE a hybrid of colliding words and images: that proudly point out, music culture; art and fashion; from all over the North East.

It’s hard to believe 24 issues down (that’s a lot of pages) that aside from the one publication born of our near breakdown, and my absolute heartbreak at the loss of my darling Bowie, every single other thing we have brought to you is rooted firmly in the North East.

I remember an early discussion with a friend who tried to dissuade me from this by telling me that they HAD TO bring models from London, Really?

Stylist’s, photographers? I think that we would have been hard pushed to find the likes of our dear friends at The Junkyard Creative anywhere.

So guys please keep telling me I can’t do this and that, because, well, have you met me? Tell me I can’t, and then, guess what, I will, I’m a Northerner!

Welcome to Our Northern Stars edition. WE Love them.

We are told that talent creates its own opportunities. But it sometimes seems that intense desire creates not only its own opportunities, but its own talents. LOVE,

POKE; BEND IT TO A DIFFERENT BEAT

There are a considerable number of LGBTQ folk that have habitually avoided the city’s gay scene for the exact same reason that many others love it so much; those who have been desperately craving something a bit less, well, stereotypical; who have been crying out for a place where the music policy casts it’s net a little wider—taking in indie, electronica, punk, hip-hop, soul, r’n’b and leftfield pop--and where, crucially, they can just hang out with other like-minded folk. (muso/artsy/bookish/lefty/hipster queers – call them what you will).

Well this is the exactly the kind of night that POKE’s music-loving founders were longing for back in the summer of 2009. Then it dawned on them, over a beer, that if none of the existing bars were going to offer such a night, they were just going to have to do it themselves…

Since then they’ve dabbled with monthly and even fortnightly events but POKE is now mostly held on an occasional, roughly 3-monthly basis, making it a real ‘calendar event’ for many of its regulars (who might be aged anywhere between 18 and 50ish).

Now you may think from this that POKE’s founders and resident

DJs, Ian Harrington and Paul Michael Bowden, sound like right pretentious w*nkers, yet their nights are anything but po-faced, chin-stroking, naval-gazing affairs. Indeed, they relish the chance of throwing musical curveballs hither and thither, and the likes of Taylor Swift, Alphabeat, Charli XCX, Carly Rae, et al. hold a very dear place in their hearts alongside the more typical ‘indie disco’ fare of Talking Heads, Bloc Party, Missy Elliott, Grimes and The Smiths. (They’re also known to have quite a penchant for 90’s dance hits, too, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that). Basically, if they like it, they’ll play it!

It’s this eclectic music policy combined with one of the most friendly and welcoming atmospheres around which has undoubtedly been the secret to its 8-year (and counting!) longevity.

The next POKE will be a Halloween extravaganza held at Kommunity on Sat 28th October, 10pm-3am.

Check out their social media channels for more info: Facebook/ Twitter/Instagram: @pokenewcastle

And you can also check out previous POKE playlists on Spotify under the username ‘pokelist’ l

ONE FOOT IN THE RAVE

HOW DID YOU START OFF ON THIS CAREER PATH

What started off for shits and giggles, and a real a love for parties and good times, soon developed into a minor obsession. Later developing into 3 companies all working in and around events. Using the analytical skills that I should of been reserving for my coursework at university, I set upon working out how we could get people into Cosmic Ballroom for electro-tinged acts that no one had ever heard of. At that point we decided something fairly vitalthat the experience is as important as the music.

Now I find myself sat here looking forward to Ape-X’s 10th Birthday thinking this was not the plan! Originally I set up my party with 3 friends. We argued furiously about whether the night should be called ‘One Foot in the Rave’… Embarrassingly my idea and the first of many mistakes.

WHAT WAS THE PLAN?

I call this more the 2nd big mistake rather than the plan. I believed that I was willing to give this all up to become a stockbroker and that that was a good idea. I bought a cheap suit for interviews and then what I thought to be the finale of Ape-X featuring DJ Sneak,

turned out in fact to be the very beginning. Some sleazy so and so interviewed me and basically alluded to the the fact potential employees needed to have short hair and tidy up mine. That point was enough for me and I left the interview at that point and never looked back!

SO WHAT DID YOU INFACT END UP DOING?

I started off launching a ticket company with a friend and continued to be an underground club promoter, bringing new acts to the city. I came in to real struggles with the bank involving payment periods so I was forced to do more events which lead to me looking after 10 clubbing brands and managing Cosmic Ballroom

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The people I work with and the experiences we give people. As a company we’re on a constant journey of exploration on how to throw the perfect event, and the full team in the office share this ethos. They are my good friends, going out buddies and support network, so they are everything to me and my company Anything that we do that’s more out of the ordinary I love the

NEL VE.CO.UK / EIGHT

most. Whether it’s bringing new acts to the city, spray painting pineapples gold - 2 years before it became a thing… (Yes I am as bitter as i sound). Doing our Rolladisco and finding out there are loads of middle aged women itching to get their boots on and skate out of retirement and relive the golden years.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Hopefully the perfect event, but that’s probably not possibly. So we should continue to try and understand our customers better, developing a greater understanding of there wants and needs. As well as keeping the ideas factory going, and continuing on our journey the way we enjoy doing so.

FINALLY WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 EVENTS?

I have to say putting on Elrow with the Motion tee was really quite something and a special moment. Ape-X is always my favourite event and you’ll still see me down the front or at the side, but dancing and having a great time. It’s hard to pick a specific one as from the bottom of my heart I can say they are amazing. Finally the Rolladisco is something else, its the most amount of fun I have seen people having in my life and I can’t recommend it enough l

YOUR DAUGHTERS

After returning to the airwaves last month with his second hit single ‘Greasy Spoon’, Sam Fender is one of the UK’s fastest rising stars, first marked by his remarkable debut track ‘Play God’ for his debut home-town headline show at The Cluny on 28th September. Sam’s performance at The Cluny marked the launch of his eagerly anticipated new single ‘Millennial’.

The Cluny was packed to the rafters and so we had an idea that we were in for a good night, the support acts were great too, I was particularly impressed by Hector Gannet. But then there was Sam, he brought vocals that were fresh yet somehow smoky, some heart wrenching soul searching lyrics and beautiful guitar and keyboard. I can’t remember what the first song of the encore was, which is a shame cos I would love to hear it again. At the risk of being accused of objectifying men I have to also point out that looking like a cross between Edward from the Twilight series and James Dean isn’t going to hurt his career either. Speaking of which we were likening his performance to a very early Paulo Nutini gig at that very same venue. That I think is enough of the name-dropping

Sam has over the last few months been on the road, warming up his band out of the spotlight with a mini tour of the Scottish Highlands, unannounced shows in the Lake District and playing festivals in Madrid and Holland with a standout performance at Boardmasters Festival in the summer l Check him out Soundcloud youtube etc, Local talent we Love it!

LETS GET CREATIVE

Ne LOve designer tells all…

Its been 20 years since I left Newcastle College and scurried down to the bright lights of London to indulge in magazine design, it was quite an adventure, still not sure how I survived! It’s been three years since I decided it was time to come back, so I returned to to my roots and set up my creative hub on the shores of Whitley Bay.

Publishing...’pictures and words’ is what I love, transforming material and interacting with aspirational people. For me my ethos for good design is simplicity, just because there is white space doesn’t mean you have to cram a bunch of sh*t in there.

Slowly slowly catchy monkey was how I approached the north, even though I had bags of experience it was all about getting to know the Northern industry and the folks in it.

I came across Ne Love, and thought..this is my kind of mag, its well put together. I got introduced to the fantastic Juin, who ‘got me” and got how a magazine should look and feel, I think our first conversation was about photography and stock and maybe the spice girls mega mix (but maybe that wasn’t us!). So it all began from there and the friendship was made, I love the mag, it emcompasses all a magazine should be and of course its about my hometown :) l www.kellyflood.co.uk

....SOME ARE SILVER AND SOME ARE GOLD

For the last couple of years here at the Glamorous Owl we have been helping people make memories by creating their own jewellery. From friends, Siblings, Mothers and Daughters too, of course couples. After all what could be a more treasured gift than something made with your own fair hands? It’s a little like those drawings and hand paintings that your little treasures brought home en masse from infant school. Except by an adult with love and probably just the one.

Each workshop will take you through the steps to create a beautiful piece of sterling silver jewellery using traditional silversmithing tools and techniques resulting in an everlasting keepsake. Something to be treasured.

Individuals or groups can book the classes and great fun is to be

had with groups like hen parties with bubbly and something more than a hangover to show for it afterward. And while the fun and easy going Claire injects fun and puns at every group, there is a serious side.

Last month they launched the wedding ring service offering the choice of creating your own wedding bands under expert private tuition in a choice of silver 9ct or 18ct gold.  Now that is seriously romantic. l

WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THE GLAMOROUS OWL?

The owner is knowledgable and friendly. (An expert in anything from silver to single malts)!

The stock is unique and bespoke made to the North east.

The venue is centrally located yet quirky enough to find and make you feel like you’ve had a city experience.

I love everything about the GO - and to boot they often have ‘secret sessions’ from local musicians and worshops.

At first glance you might imagine some kind of hypnosis type brain washing. The fact is when I first heard this name, it piqued my curiosity. So I simply had to go along and meet the face behind the business.

Enter Amanda Grieveson, personal trainer, massage therapist and nutritionist, this lady uses science not fads to whip you into shape. Obviously Amanda’s no shirker when it comes to the gym, and while it’s a proven fact that her laser lipo suction removes inches, Amanda also specializes in things like massage. I will admit that I went along and tried the non surgical laser lipo treatment recently and lost 4 inches in one session, however that was not my primary reason to visit Believe 2 Achieve, and at the time of printing, her G5 massage machine has shown miraculous improvements on

a couple of injuries that I have been carrying around for a while, after much physiotherapy and a steroid injection, Amanda has worked on the areas surrounding my injuries. It’s absolute bliss being able to sleep again at night.

So, as I said at the start, I’m now a believer and probably will be spending much more time with Amanda, as I’m pretty keen now to find out which route she will take me down in terms of nutrition and personal fitness. After all they are the only clinic in the UK offering personal training alongside non-surgical laser lipo l

Of course we were blown away by the music and the sound generally but first of all I have to tell you about, well; us really, by us I mean the crowd.

Where have you all been hiding? When a band as cool as Sparks come to town, sounding as fresh as they did when you were a teenager watching Top Of The Pops well you’re going to get a reaction, obviously right?

This Boiler Shop crowd or at least 85% of it were between forty and fifty years old and ninety nine% of them were ‘awesome’ there were all sorts punks rockabillies, people that were and are in to fashion. I mean really people that have a look, one that makes other people look,

To me that’s never meant ‘oh look at her/him, I want to look exactly like that. It meant set me free to look like me!

My faith is restored, Sparks were on fire! The fabulous turned out to see them Ron who my dad hated for his Hitleresque look was on fine form as he made a rare rise from his beloved keyboards to

entertain us with a little dance. First seen I think at this years Glasto appearance. Brother and vocalist Russell was outstanding with a voice that hasn’t aged a day. A mind blowing range and as fun and smiley as his brother is serious.

This is real entertainment from the old favorites like ‘this town ain’t big enough for the both of us’ To some stunning if quirky lyrics from tunes like the second track from their latest hit album “what the hell is it this time”

Not surprisingly the tour is sold out practically everywhere so if you were slow enough to miss out on tickets for this one I highly recommend that you listen to the new album HIPPOPOTAMUS and then work backward through their earlier stuff.

DR BEAUTY WILL SEE YOU NOW

Dr Steven Land is a skilled Aesthetic Doctor with a conscience, pretty hard to come by these days. In a world where beauty is synonymous with perfection and success, it’s difficult to find an honest aesthetic practitioner who will not only guide you through your treatment, but will also steer you away from treatment you don’t actually need.

Land is the Director, owner and sole practitioner at Novellus Aesthetics located in the prestigious One Benton Terrace building in Jesmond, something of a hub for cool independents in Newcastle.

After seeing a gap in the market for good quality practice using the best products on the market Land set up Novellus aesthetics to offer Dr led treatment with assurance, and has built up a loyal client base made upon everyone from nurses to models. With patient safety at the heart of the practice, Land only offers treatments and products that are backed up with scientific research and evidence so patients are never used as guinea pigs at Novellus - sounds strange but you’d be surprised how frequently this happens in clinics, even right here in the North East. He’s also not afraid to turn people away if he feels it wouldn’t be ethical for him to administer treatment.

What sets Novellus apart from its local competitors is the level of skill and expertise behind the needle. Land is a fully qualified, time served doctor who still puts in shifts at NHS hospital The RVI between his aesthetic and laser hair removal clinics in Jesmond.

He’s passionate about safety in the industry and believes that you get what you pay for in aesthetics saying that if it seems too good to be true, it usually is (and we all know how true that statement can be).

Dr Land and Novellus are at the cutting edge when it comes to offering new and proven methods and treatments. Where the research is sound and the benefit is proven, Land is keen to bring pioneering new treatments to the North East. currently Novellus is one of only three North East clinics offering the brand new Profhilo treatment which seeks to encourage skin to repair itself from the inside out without the use of filler or Botox, something the Doctor is super excited about.

So, what’s next for Dr Land and Novellus Aesthetics? An expansion into non-aesthetic beauty treatments is the next step for the entrepreneur. with nails, facials and massage on the menu Dr Land is hoping to widen his reach by branching out into the mediaspa business and with a suite of treatments including light therapy, Botox and filler, laser hair removal as well as products for eyelash and brow growth and cell renewal, we’d say he’s well on his way l

MONUMENTAL BURGERS

When I think of Byron my first thought, perhaps, would not be of burgers. It may however be of people watching through stained glass windows while the wind chases clouds across a sunny sky. That was in fact how this particular Saturday soiree started.

Myself and two friends sat at a table in Byron’s watching the world go by while sipping Merlot and admiring the view of the Monument. Suffice to say we had had a lovely warm welcome and a recommendation for said Merlot from the lovely Ellie. Having chosen this establishment, because we fancied burgers, what better to choose than burgers!

For Craig it was bacon and cheese all the way, a heavenly hangover cure in the shape of a bacon double cheeseburger with a side of cheese and bacon fries. Not watching the carbs then Craig? The only question was, how to order it, “medium” obviously the answer to that question. For Sophie, a more healthy option the Smokey with no pickle with a side sweet potato fries, and for my saintly self, the Smokey again with extra jalapeños and a beetroot and avocado salad. The usual food share ensued, forks to the

ready. Fortunately no one was injured in the making of this food review. Actually the contrary is true, the burgers were all chunky, juicy, meat patties. So chunky in fact, knives and forks were used.

I did manage to steal a fork full of bacon and cheese fries before Craig inhaled them, my food envy kicked in again, I was, however rescued from it by the fresh beetroot, avocado and quinoa salad. Crisp, crunchy and refreshing I only sinned once while eating that, and that was only to steal a single sweet potato fry.

The portions were so generous we only went for one sharer dessert. The classic brownie and ice cream. The ice cream pooling around the warm, chocolatey dessert.

So, a word of advice from NE Love, if you’re wandering around the town and get the urge for beautifully put together, perfectly cooked burgers, served to you by a really friendly crowd in a setting you’d be hard pushed to beat, head for Byron Burgers on Grey Street l 104-108 GREY STREET, NEWCASTLE, NE1 6JG 0191 2612277

ONE of our favourite hotels will be opening its doors to party-goers of all ages this December.

Ramside Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa will be running a selection of family friendly parties and events in the run up to Christmas.

Kicking things off on Sunday 3 December is the first of two family lunchtime performances of Aladdin, with the second scheduled for Saturday 30 December.

Take a magic carpet ride through the famous pantomime as characters like Aladdin, the Genie and Widow Twankey come to life.

On Sunday 10 December, young visitors will be able to enjoy Ramside’s traditional Santa Sunday show. The show, which runs from noon-1pm, is free to watch although donations to the hotel’s chosen charity will be welcomed, and admission is on a first come, first served basis.

A week later, youngsters will get the chance to hit the dancefloor at the lunchtime Xmas Goes Pop party.

A live show hosted by X-Factor duo He Knows, She Knows, the

family party features singers and dancers performing hits from stars including Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Little Mix and more.

Tim Boyd, General Manager at Ramside Hall Hotel, explained that the family events are an important part of the hotel’s Christmas celebrations.

“We have a very busy festive party calendar lined up once again this year, but we wanted to ensure that our younger guests weren’t forgotten about,” he said.

“Christmas is a time for children, so we have made sure they are well catered for here with these different family shows. We tend to find our family friendly events sell out very early, so if anyone wishes to book we advise them to do so as soon as possible.” l

JUST ME AGAIN!

I’ll never forget the first time I put on a pair of women’s skinny jeans, pulling the waist band jaggedly up my milky white hairless thighs, testicles resembling Gonzo from the Muppets, one of my eyes obscured by a long grease covered fringe.

Yet I remain proud of that moment because I had taken the final step into what I consider the last true sub culture, the Emo. The elation as I exited the shop in my new denim leggings and a My Chemical Romance t-shirt was unforgettable.

Oh I had experimented from charver to trendy, you name it I had a go, but Emo fit my miserable teenage self like a proverbial glove. Something’s you just never forget like my parents faces when I strolled in to the house looking like a cross between Noel Fielding and the Child Catcher of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

So I ask you now where are the trends? They’ve disappeared, I suppose there was the hype beasts but sitting outside a shop for days on end and spending mammy and daddy’s money on shoes, just completely lacks character not to mention originality right?

Is it the fear of looking stupid? Or being labelled uncool? Where is that awkward stage where you don’t know who you are or what you’re about?  Maybe it’s fear of being recorded on phones, anonymity has disappeared. Christ I did some really daft things as a teen, I’m so glad they weren’t captured on film so that I can just

deny they ever happened. I did once piss in my friends pocket on a night out (or did I?  ) it’s more fun to tell the story than have videographic evidence

Teenagers today seem to be like the children of the corn, blank stares, not a hair out of place, over made up girls with that look way beyond their years, Placid and bored, except when they are kicking each other’s heads in full of vodka and spice.

It could take hours for my friends and I to convince a passer by to get us three litres of cider and twenty fags. Which we would ration between us like Lord of the Flies, in Boldon Colliery. No YouTube no beauty blogs, just holes in our trainers, and spots, giant angry spots.

Why the rush to grow up, hurrying toward mortgages and bills and Sunday morning trips to Ikea to find that 50p hotdog that can’t mend that feeling of loss of youth.

Indeed youth is wasted on the young, we are of the, never grow up its a trap Peter Pan generation.

So I guess its hardly surprising that teenagers scare the living shit out of me! l

TAROTSCOPES

VIRGO: Unleashing your inner spirit animal is your mission this month. This may be finding your inner strength to make a brave and bold decision or it could using your animal magnetism to attract and lure the object of your affections. Your wild side is definitely going to be on show and could lead you to a transformation which will allow you to stand fully in your magnificence, I can almost hear your roar!

LIBRA: The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is your motto this month. You are being urged to accept nothing less and this is even from yourself. Authenticity is calling and wants you to answer, the truth may be hard to face and can often hurt, but it will most certainly set you free.

SCORPIO: Success and satisfaction are key to your month. Any emotional investment you have recently made will pay dividends which will lead you to feel whole, accomplished and like you belong. Family and relationships offer comfort, companionship, nurture and a happiness and sense of self which seems to have eluded you for some time is now yours. Abundance is yours in all areas.

SAGITTARIUS: Decisions, decisions. This month sees you coming to a cross roads, you may be faced with the prospect of stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a new direction. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. Changes are needed and you will need to make choices. There is a big wide world out there, are you going to venture into it or stick with what you know?

CAPRICORN: “I have a dream‚ Martin Luther King, his words become yours this month as you have a vision which can become reality once you inject a little of your fiery passion into your thirst for adventure and love of a challenge. Ambition and confidence will allow you to move mountains at this time as nothing is going to stop you from getting what you desire.

AQUARIUS: Confusion and inner battles taint your month, your thoughts are not clear and this is causing inner turmoil. You may not want to lose face or admit you were wrong but this egoic way of thinking is adding to your conflicts. You need to ask yourself, is it more important to be happy or more important to be right?

PISCES: Love is in the air for you this month. Passions are ignited and temptation could be rife. This love could be a life changer but, yes the dreaded but it may call for you to sacrifice something, everything comes with a price but a love like this is often priceless.

ARIES: You are doing a Bridget Jones this month as you feel all by yourself. You may have a woe is me attitude or you may be crawling into your cave on your own accord. Either way, this is a perfect opportunity to have a good hard thing about your life and where you are going, Are your actions causing others to retreat? Are you on the right path? are you being authentic? Much soul searching will shed light into the dark areas of your soul.

TAURUS: You are feeling defeated and desolate. The fight has gone from your psyche and you may even be wondering what it truly is that you have been fighting for in the past months. This is a time to walk away from anything that is hurting you or causing pain. Yes, it is hard giving up, but its much harder staying in turmoil. You cannot keep on dancing with the devil then wonder why you are still in hell.

GEMINI: You may feel that people are coming at you from all angles this month. Everyone seems to be against you and you cannot make them see reason. Don’t engage in power games, use your energy in protecting yourself and putting up boundaries. Boundaries are not there to segregate you, they are essential in protecting you. It’s your life, don’t let others control you.

CANCER: You have the Midas touch this month, whatever your turn your hand to will turn to gold in an instant. Career and business ventures look set to see the money rolling in. Its time to life the high life, spend a little as there is more to come, Splash out on some luxuries, fine dining or whatever floats your Yacht. You have worked hard for this, enjoy your rewards.

LEO: Money, Money, money is on your mind. You could be placing too much importance on financial security and not enough on your emotional life. It’s nice to be secure, but you need to look at what it is costing you. Cooking the books may make you happy, but cooking a meal will benefit your loved ones. Money is essential but people hold more importance.

Pixie Tenenbaum is a Fashion and Beauty Influencer and Blogger from the North East known primarily for her awesome writing talent, love of slogan tees and awesome eyebrows. Having spent time in the US, France and London she settled back in the North East and looks set to stay, for now at least. Tenenbaum is one of our own at NE Love and contributes to other publications including ELLE magazine, RION, Belle Bridal and a whole load of other cool print editions (none cooler that NE Love obvs).

Tenenbaum’s story is simple she was previously a Head of Service in the NHS before having a severely disabled child impacting her ability to work a 9-5, she tells us she ‘reluctantly and bitterly’ gave up the job she loved to be the main carer for her son. After suffering what she felt was a total loss of identity and voice, she started to write; Twitter, FaceBook, WordPress, anywhere she could offload and was quickly picked up as a New Talent by ELLE magazine and asked to blog from their infamous Beauty Cupboard. The rest, as

they say, is history, or present in Tenenbaum’s case.

Her Fashion Voyeur blog has a legion of loyal followers who call themselves Voyeurs and Tenenbaum engages them with her quirky outfit posts. Tenenbaum is a regular at London and Paris Fashion Weeks and no strange to a pastel hair switch up, this is one Geordie fashionista with her finger firmly on the fashion, beauty and lifestyle pulse.
