WHERE MODERN MEETS TRADITION; STONEY’S BARBERSHOP

I’ve been in this industry, Hairdessing /barbering, now for 28 years. I love it, it’s moved on so much in the last ten years, Fashions are dictated by what is relevant or current at the time, barbering is timeless! Men’s hairstyles cover so many eras. The 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, right up to the modern day. Classics like the Flat Top, the pompadour, the physchobilly quiff, the jelly roll, or more modern styles like the underpinned crop, the skin fade, the drop fade, the undercut, disconnections, texture. Men and boys are rocking all of these haircuts today with confidence. Diversity! That is the key, wondering what is going to walk through your door, and, better still knowing you have the skills to execute all of these styles.

Ever saw a cowboy film without a barber being in it!!!! Picture it, the sheriff on the lookout for that ruthless cowboy who always seems to

be in the barber shop having a shave and shooting down shots of whiskey. It’s still the same today lol. Cut throat shaving is a massive part of our industry now and has made a huge resurgence in the last 10-15 years. Men take so much pride in there appearance these days which is great and not before time. I’m fortunate enough recently, to have taken part in the regional finals of the Bluebeards Revenge Britains Best Wet Shave in which I have won. This is something I’m extremely proud of as I take my trade and my profession very seriously and at the same time enjoy it immensely. The day I tell myself I’m off to WORK is the day I’ll pack it. ELLO THERE NE LOVERS

Here it is at last we are here, 21 the official coming of age and dare I say possibly my favoutite magazine to date? So perhaps its not really that strange that my Dad has cropped up twice in this edition, because I miss him of course but the things that he said to me, that have stayed with me! so apart from all you readers and believers and contributors its him I wish I could thank.

He said of love: Always go for someone that will not only be proud to be with you, but will risk everything to keep you! Im almost sure he didnt mean me to apply this to a magazine. Yet here we are, 21 times blood sweat and tears, its not glamorous there ae always tantrums (usually me) but then by some miracle it all of that turns in to something that we are incredibly proud of!

So the following is an old poem about being 21 that was written around 1920 right after the first word war, so while it fits our Peaky Blinders time frame it just goes to show that if you wait long enough everything will come back in to fashion AND if youre anything like me, despite its age this poem will resonate with you, I was impossible and bulletproof at 21. Here goes.

When I was twenty one I heard a wise man say

Give pounds and crowns and guineas But do not give your heart away

Give pearls away, give rubies, but you stay fancy free But I was tweny one my dear there was point in telling me.

RE: CREATI N CREATE

NEL EIGHT

The minute I walked in to Your Workshop North East I was transported back years to Dad’s shed where there was always some crazy idea going on. Dad often had bits of transistor radios and TV’s in various states of repair or disrepair depending on how you look at it. It drove my Mum insane but I adored Dad and I loved hanging out with him in ‘the shed’ as a result of this, a rather quirky habit, for a girl anyway (sorry feminists) I developed a bit of a mmm I wonder why this isn’t working thing, followed by a lets take it apart and see thing. While at school the boys got to do wood and metal work and the girls learned?

Yes domestic science, otherwise known as learning to cook and sew because obviously the would be your job!

But I digress; these days few people have the luxury of a garden shed (I know some that don’t even own a tool box) but if you want to make do and mend, salvage something old and beautiful, build something from scratch, just fix create, get oily, dusty, learn to use tools or you simply have a project to tackle and you lack not just the space but the tools for the job this is ‘your space’.

If like me you are a bit of a lets fix it type this place is heaven, it isn’t just a ‘here’s a bench and some tools’ gig either the three technicians love what they do too and its their job top make sure your project is possible and viable. They are there to help you as much or as little as you need.

PRANGMAN ENTER

IT ALL STARTED WITH DRUM AND BASE

Hailing originally from Newcastle upon Tyne, Prangman’s formative years were spent assisting with DJing at his father’s pub, moving on to his own material at the age of 13, producing and DJing hard house, trance, house, progressive house, tech house, breakbeat and Drum and Bass. The North East of England proved fertile ground for him to organize and perform at parties. While studying Music Technology at Leicester’s DMU, he met producers and artists and was influenced by the new genre of dubstep in 2005 and helped organize weekly party “Hubstep”, which ran until 2011. At this time, both the Prangman alias and the monthly “Sous-Sol Projet” event series were born and continue running today. His first major studio collaboration was with Lyndsey Murray on ‘Far Away’ in in 2011.

‘Chamber’ is the new EP from electronic producer Prangman to be released via Migration Records (sub-label of NexGen Music). Dan Meldrum aka Prangman has enjoyed airplay from Rinse FM’s Marcus Nasty and shared stages with the likes of Flava D, El-B, Wen, Khan & Nee, Mooney, Teebee, Wookie and DJ EZ and Jackmaster. He performed at the 2013 Horizon Festival in Bulgaria and has held a residency at the regular Sous Sol event series, one of Leicester’s most

established parties. Most recently, his participation at Outlook Festival in Croatia alongside Digital Mystikz, Loefa, Mooney, and Killjoy was also well received.

Of ‘Chamber’, Prangman states: “I use brands, objects or places to influence my decision on track titles, this can help me direct the sound of the track or the choose samples required. I like to fuse genres together to make a whole new unique sound. I guess it all stems from the Drum & Bass days. I’ve always been a massive drum and bass head and love the Neurofunk sub-genre”.

Prangman cites a range of influences, including UK Garage artists Flava D, EL-B, Killjoy and Mooney and drum and bass producers Calibre, Break, Calyx, Tee-Bee, Black Sun Empire and Noisia & Phace. “Far Away” is a sparse, rhythmic vocal breaks track with overtones of acid jazz and soul. Lindsey Murray’s husky vocal phrasing is offset by an understated keyboard progression that allows “Far Away” to breathe with the excitement of a new discovery l

STRINGS IN THE HEART OF NEWCASTLE

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE

Born in Newcastle Aonghus Dracup, learnt the violin by ear as a child through the Suzuki method. He achieved grade 8 by the age of 18. After many years as a Teacher of English both in the UK and abroad, he decided to return to music and studied Violin Making under Shem Mackay at London Metropolitan University where he was awarded the Tom Jenkins Award for best instrument in 2010. Following two years as a workshop apprentice at Bridgewood and Neitzert in London before returning to the North East in 2012 and setting up his own studio on Pilgrim Street in the heart of Newcastle.

Services provided include minor repairs such as peg bushing and closing seams to major repairs such as neck re-setting and crack repairs. Up to full set up services available including new bridge cutting, soundpost adjustment and string heights.

Aonghus makes instruments of the violin family based upon the great Italian and Austrian makers of the 17th century. As well as these more conventional instruments, he has researched the folk fiddle tradition of Norway in depth and succeeded in creating a synthesis of traditional Norwegian crafts and motifs with his own creative input in the form of wood carving and ink drawings.

“I hope to produce more individual instruments, each one responding to the specific needs of the musician.”

THE B-SIDE OF

WE CATCH UP WITH THE ENIGMATIC IF SLIGHTLY ANGRY ANTONY DALY.

Hi Tony, we like to think that the majority of vinyl junkies know exactly where 586 is and it’s great to be tucked away in B&D studios with independent businesses such as your good self. Do you think that most of your clientele are DJ’S etc.? No. I think there’s a fairly even and healthy split of those who DJ regularly at their own parties and in bars locally, people who have a set of decks at home and maybe once played out more, but now just do it for the love and customers who own one turntable and buy records to listen to, at home. Many DJ’s now, don’t play vinyl and some may never have started off on a pair of turntables, or even been near them.

We spoke briefly about record store day and as ever, you had an alternative view about what you think it’s all about now in comparison to what it started out to be. Want to tell me a little more about that?

Record Store Day has gone from small labels and bands, saying “Thank You” to their loyal fans and businesses who’ve supported them, to Major companies getting involved and turning the whole occasion into a “Black Friday” esque nightmare, but replacing 60 inch colour tele’s, with 12” splattered vinyl, “Culture Club” Albums. There are already reports of certain records releases being put back, so Pressing Plants can churn out the shite that will no doubt cost £20 plus, for a record that you’d easily find in bargain bins for no more than a couple of quid.

Who buys this stuff? Often, the types of people who you’ll rarely see supporting a Record Shop, regularly. They buy (and often ask others to buy additional copies for them), to sell on straight away via Ebay – for vastly inflated prices. They’re vultures l

There is more into Scandinavian design than trendy words ‘Hygge’, ‘Lagom’ and ‘Sisu’ will tell you. Not only is this Nordic phenomenon about being cosy and strong but it is also bright and colorful as seen in Newcastle’s new Scandinavian lifestyle store KOTA. Opened in December last year, KOTA has already won over hearts of both Grainger Market regulars plus newer clientele, students and design enthusiasts of North-East. Krista Puranen Wilson, the owner of KOTA tells that all the items are carefully selected small editions that you cannot find anywhere else in the North-East, or for most cases even in UK. For KOTA it is also important that their products have been ethically produced of natural materials whenever possible. At KOTA

An exploration of the enduring appeal of glasses

A few things have become apparent to us over the last few months (since CrossEyes pitched up on High Bridge) one of these is of course that on entering you immediately feel relaxed and experience the kind of customer service that you haven’t experienced elsewhere. This lot are something else, we want to pop in for a coffee now every time we pass by!

Then there is of course the super cool Danish eyewear, with the latest optical technology and just as cool interior design. The philosophy at CrossEyes is to be simple and transparent with their pricing - The aim is to let you know the price of your glasses at the start rather than at the end.

Best of all though is the feeling that we were proved right again we

came we saw we loved, and lately on more than one occasion when I have said to a friend great glasses and the increasingly common reply “yea thanks got them at CrossEyes”

You have to be completely blind not to see how uber cool they are. Of course other glasses are available :) but quite honestly why bother.

TAKE ABROW

NO PAIN NO GAIN!!! …….. REALLY?

When I first came across the lovely Ruth from Ruby Red it was whilst looking for a cosmetic tattooist that did feathering (eyebrows that look like individual hairs) as opposed to a solid line. If you take a look at Ruby Red’s Facebook page you will see many, many delighted customers but more importantly some before and after’s that would blow your mind. On the basis of this, and some personal recommendations, I decided to take myself off to sunny Sunderland and find out for myself what all the fuss was about. I found out!

Ruby Red’s can be found upstairs from the National Slimming Clinic on Waterloo Place in Sunderland. It was like meeting an old friend for a coffee, I was so at ease (even though Ruth was very strict about me filling in all the forms properly!) that as opposed to being nervous I was quite looking forward to getting on with it. I have to say it was rather a nervous laugh and when she told me that it would be painless. Painless tattooing!? Really?! Yes! Really!

The numbing cream was left on enough time to really work it’s magic and I can honestly say without any hesitation that the process was painless. Add to that the fact that I was relaxed, we laughed and I left with perfectly shaped and coloured brows. I don’t think they’ve looked this natural in years. Brush stroke brows are fab, I’m due back in a few weeks, not only am I not dreading it but I’m actually looking forward to it l

And no guys, I’m not suddenly ‘fessing up to having any masochistic tendencies! Its true there was NO PAIN (She says arching a perfect brow)

My Story

I’ve been at the helm of my own business for 25 years this year and in that time I’ve watched similar businesses come and go...Newcastle Hair & Beauty Clinic is the longest standing beauty salon in Newcastle and I think that’s down to my strong management style and my fantastic team of female dominant staff. Like anybody, I’ve been through hardship and I’ve weathered it, as a result What piece of advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your journey? Enjoy the moment it passes so quickly. Keep a diary there will be so many amazing mile stones and memories along the way that you will forget a lot of them that should be cherished. There’s will be disasters and bad decisions on your journey but they will only add to your experience of life and enrich it by enabling you to grow and learn. After all if there was no rain we wouldn’t see the rainbows.

How did you acquire your first high profile / influential client? What affect did this have on your business? My first high profile client, Cate Blanchett, was by chance. She was in town filming the movie Elizabeth and we treated her during her stay. Since then we’ve had a few celebrity

clients but we respect their rights to privacy and would never advertise their whereabouts on social media or announce their arrival, we aren’t that type of salon. I’m sure though, you’ll have seen our salon on MTV’s Geordie Shore as we regularly have the cast & crew in to film their treatments for the show. We do work with some high profile bloggers and magazine editors and gain quite a lot of media coverage, you only have to google us to find that out!

How do you keep your clients coming back for more? Again, five star service. Our clients know that our service is second to none and our reviews and testimonials reflect this. I also think that it’s about knowing your market, because the salon is in the centre of Newcastle’s shopping district, we know that our clients fit a certain demographic and what our most requested treatments are so I ensure that staff are fully trained and confident before practising.

Which women along the way have inspired you the most? My original inspiration of a strong women was when Margaret Thatcher became our first female Prime Minister. I was studying economics at school and regardless of what anyone thought of her policies I admired that she constantly made decisions (rightly or wrongly) and stood by them. I was overawed by her strength of character to stand up to everyone under massive pressure.

IT’S NOT MEME IT’S YOU

IF I SEE ANOTHER PHOTO OF A HALF DRUNK GLASS OF PROSECCO

I’M GOING TO HAVE A BREAK DOWN!

Ah the internet, the information super highway, or that’s how it began, now it’s a melting pot of lonely trolls sitting in there room cackling away as they ram crisps in there mouths surrounded by empty cans of monster, or couples on date night taking photos of their £7 “amazing” dinner at Weatherspoons #noonecares. Ever thought that maybe if you talked to each other instead of texting and taking selfies you could finally pluck up the courage to say “I’m unhappy, it’s not me it’s you”

If I see another photo of a half drunk glass of Prosecco I’m going to have a break down!

But first things first I’m aware of the irony of slagging of the social media because that’s what landed me on the platform your reading right now but the internet used to be such a fun place didn’t it? Cats falling off stuff and that video of the dog that can talk, now, anyone that watched 14 seconds of question time, or answered a question on university challenge (my record is 6 by the way ) can force their moronic views down our throats, open wide everyone !!!

Then, there is the dreaded click bait, click her too see some ageing pop star without make up, I read an article online entitled you’ve been doing these things wrong all your life, who knew I’ve been eating bananas wrong all my life? , Trust me, when I say I’m a thirty one year old single male, I’ve seen every single porn video the internet has too offer and if you think after that I don’t know how to eat a banana your sadly mistaken, I’ve seen a lot of alternative ways but I’ve survived this long just giving it a good peel and a chomp. Another nuisance Facebook competitions! I mean come on, if you are stupid enough to believe a

mystery benefactor is giving away a free Range Rover because they ordered too many, or you a Ferrari because a pigeon landed on it maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to have a computer. But don’t forget too like, share, comment, tag 11 friends, sacrifice a goat, and bark at the moon just in case.

This brings me to gap year students! You know what I’d really like to see? 309 pics of trees, scraggly cats, your sunburnt skin and you pointing at stuff, thanks I’ll sleep tonight, I’m also really glad you took time off from missing lectures and drinking trebles to really find yourself. And oh how I have enjoyed hearing about your spiritual journey when you were shelling peanuts in a factory in Australia.

And you know what’s the worst the bottom of the barrel? Even worse than “eeeeeeh Hun inbox me” (just text them)! The crime of all crimes on social media is of course the combo of hangover posts and requests for Sunday dinners, if you can’t handle a hangover don’t drink, if you insist though, please just suffer in silence. I don’t need to hear how you need someone to stroke your hair, and I certainly won’t send help, As for you people who constantly send game requests or chain letters you are basically a digital Jehovah’s Witness!!

Last but not least: YES I do know someone’s who’s doing lifts, amazing invention, they’re called taxis and absolutely perfect when your at home hung over and hungry, take one and step away from that computer l

The afternoon sun is shining stripes across the wooden floor and late afternoon diners when we show up, after my long day it was absolutely idyllic to plonk myself down facing out on to the quayside with a lovely chilled glass of pinot. main meal, gnocchi with truffle oil baby vegetable’s, wild mushrooms and pine nuts, I have never come across gnocchi served like this it was golden brown and looked like some kind of glorified croquet.

Darin had played it safe and plumbed for Shillings Sunday roast beef dinner always a winner the meat was perfect the veg al dente and slathered in butter.

All this was finished off with lemon parfait served with vanilla and coffee ice cream, and a walk back up the quayside in the spring sunshine to walk it off.

Looking for a perfect Sunday? Look no further, They used to say it was lucky to find a shiny shilling, they were right l

COCKTAIL

Here at NE Love we still consider Prohibition to be one of Newcastle’s coolest hidden gems. So hidden in fact that on our latest visit the Uber driver couldn’t even find it; but oh! dear reader you should. Burlesque is great fun and the staff are great fun. Dress up to really immerse yourself in the experience.

On our last visit a Vaudeville style cabaret that saw NE Loves very own Charlie climb on stage to ‘twirl his tassels” I’m afraid we can’t promise that particular outrageous show again.

But if you want to do something fun and different in a small intimate venue.

1st. Insist, search, find it, tell off that taxi driver.

2nd. Then tell Prohibition I sent you.

3rd. Let your hair down and enjoy! l

VIRGO: “Go on now go, walk out the door, just turn around now, ’cause you’re not welcome anymore” Listen to Gloria Gaynor this month. You need to slam the door on someone or something once and for all. It may be upsetting but you will survive.

LIBRA: “communication let me down and I’m left here” You may feel Tony Hadley’s pain this month. Your actions may have backfired and you’re facing the consequences. Waiting for the phone to ring is never nice but next time, be careful when listening to gossip. Listen to your gut instead.

SCORPIO: “I see trees of green, red roses too and I think to myself, what a wonderful word”. You’re channeling Louis Armstrong. You feel grateful and blessed. Colours are brighter, food tastes sweeter and love feels deeper. You’re realising that true riches don’t have to be bought as they surround you already.

SAGITTARIUS: “Should I stay or should I go now? If I go there will be trouble an’ if I stay there will be double”. The clash faced a similar quandary. You have to make your mind up. When you’re at a crossroads, look both ways before you make a move. A decision must be made and only you can decide.

CAPRICORN: “Don’t stop, thinking about tomorrow, don’t stop, it’ll soon be here, It’ll be, better than before Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone” You have that Fleetwood Mac feeling. Think positive, get your fighting spirit back and know that you have the strength to get through anything. Bounce back and know that a brighter tomorrow is around the corner.

AQUARIUS: “It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight, risin’ up to the challenge of our rival” You’re in Rocky mode. You’re fighting your corner and aren’t prepared to give in. Your instinct is sharp and you know where you’re headed. Kick naysayers to the curb and march on.

PISCES: “I’ve nothing much to offer, There’s nothing much to take, I’m an absolute beginner, But I’m absolutely sane” Bowie is your driving force. You have a new idea about how life should be and are looking to explore and adventure it. You may not have the experience but your will and determination compensates. Go where your spirit calls you. Travel light and you will find everything you need.

ARIES: “Governments crack and systems fall, Lights go out - walls come tumbling down!” Weller knew the score. You will see the structures you have built your foundations on dissolve. As old Ideas and ideals disappear, you are left in a panic. But don’t worry; all they were doing was restricting you. This demolition is the perfect way to be free and start again.

TAURUS: “It’s a new dawn, It’s a new day, It’s a new life, for me, and I’m feeling good” Nina Simone is your spirit animal as she guides you towards a new beginning. There is no time like the present for making life changes. Use your renewed energy to start fresh. It will feel so damn good and you’ll have the world at your feet.

GEMINI: “It takes a leap of faith to get things going, It takes a leap of faith you gotta show some guts, In your heart you must trust” You don’t just have to listen to Springsteen to know you need to take a huge step into the unknown. That little voice inside of you has been nagging you to wipe the slate clean. Now is the time, jump and your net will appear.

CANCER: “I think it’s gonna be a long long time, ’Till touch down brings me round again to find, I’m not the man they think I am at home, Oh no no no I’m a rocket man” Prepare to exit your comfort zone as news may surprise you but don’t worry; excitement follows. Expect the unexpected as one action could change your life. Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll reach the stars.

LEO: “Our house it has a crowd, there’s always something happening, and it’s usually quite loud..“ Expect Madness on the home front. You may want to run and leave them to it or you may be laying down difficult demands. Home should offer Sanctuary and not feel like prison so take away any rules and regulations. Every happy home has a heart, keep yours open.
