ELLO THERE NE LOVERS

Wow where’s this year going? it seems rushing by me in a flurry of places to go and things to do, old friends and new ones, new places and old favorites. People are planning Christmas for heavens sake!

EDITORS LETTER H

Never ones to miss out on a good time we have had some fab nights over at Times Square and Boiler Shop and so on, but I think its about those who you spend these glorious times with, more than where you actually were. This has been on my mind a lot since my incredibly talented sister and niece on, seeing our fabulous Peaky Blinders edition 21 said ‘hey Juin we should do something with Dandelions & Pearls!

This then is how I ended up in one of my favourite venues, Colonel Porters with four great models the aforementioned Dandelions and the huge talent that is Kaya Wren. And how we were able to bring you this edition of NE Love number 23; it’s always going to be dear to my heart for obvious reasons.

I’m going to dedicate this one to my parents Brenda and Bernard Filon, I hope that wherever they are they can see that my sis and I pulled it off and didn’t bicker once, (well maybe a bit over the sandwiches)

Don’t forget time is precious spend it well;

How to travel in Time; Read.

How to feel Time; Write. How to stop time; Kiss. How to escape time ; Music Pretty much ticked all those boxes then 

LOVE, PASS IT ON! JUIN XX

WHAT’S JESMOND GOT? WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Jesmond has always been full of life, with some of it’s most popular visitors being students. The streets are always busy, with easy ways to travel in and out, as everything is within walking distance of frequent metros and buses. A growing population of both students and young professionals, has made Osborne Road extremely popular. It has always had fun bars and restaurants, more so in the summer months because of the popularity of al-fresco dining and drinking.

Everyone loves to dine out occasionally, but once we’ve found somewhere, we become creatures of habit! So why not try out some of Jesmond’s more sophisticated restaurants, where you can wine and dine in style! We suggest you put on your Sunday

best, and go try out something new and exciting. There is such an eclectic mix that you are sure to find something to your palette.

Do make sure that when you visit Jesmond you take a stroll off the beaten track and down the beautiful, charming side streets. Jesmond is packed full of hidden gems and quaint little cafes and shops.

For the fashionistas amongst us, Jesmond is an absolute must see as its full of hip and high end stores, not to mention some fabulous hair dressers, spas and beauty salons l

TANTALIZING TAPAS

THE BLUE BELL COMES UP TRUMPS AGAIN

Standing on the edge of Jesmond dene in Jesmond Vale is the Blue Bell we have always had a bit of a soft spot for this place, and it’s not just its location, or the doggie snacks and beers, although if I’m honest it is a bit of a pooches paradise and the walk over is very beautiful. The food was always pretty good and I love to Sunday lunch there, but the staff have always been the main pull for me, they are so amiable that it’s a good thing I don’t live nearer I would be very tempted to prop up the bar all evening. We popped in the other night and you know what they are upping their game again, with tapas and they are amazing tapas, There is a deal where you get three tapas for twelve pounds and its right on the money.

We decided that we couldn’t have just three, the menu is vast so after much indecision we went for, Lamb meat balls, Scallops and Chorizo Peach and Palma ham skewers with a raspberry sauce, oh my oh my! all great but Palma ham and peach what a combo,

its of course a nice light dish so its great for hot summer days but who knew that would work? The next three were Asian fish cakes, tempura veg and baked Camembert. The tempura veg was golden and crispy and great dipped in the hot runny cheese. Last on our list of delights were the Asian fish cakes, they were golden orbs of beautiful fish but if you like (as I do) to spice things up a bit, the wasabi mayo will blow you away. If I were the chef I would patent it. It seems to me that the sky’s the limit for these guys, at the time of print they were about to host their very first party for British Airways, not bad as first parties go. The new outdoor space has its own bar and room for 100 guests and is beautifully situated just below the Blue Bell in the garden area. As if we need an excuse to party! l

NAPOLI IN NEWCASTLE

One of my favourite things about Jesmond is of course that here you can find the most coveted pizza in the north, Its hard to believe that Cals’own has been part of the Jesmond land scape for just a little over a year, tucked away just off Osborne road on Holly avenue you can find a restaurant that thankfully lacks the pretentiousness of many other in the area. But what Cals lacks in pretentions it makes up for in bucket loads of courtesy professionalism and awards. Yes awards, I have watched these guys since the early days back in Heaton and they have collected accolades like other people collect…well stamps. They won Best European restaurant in the North East 2016-2017

On my visit last Sunday I was lucky enough to have Chef and Managing Partner Cal himself cook for me if this happens you’re in for a treat. Talk to him about food and you find quite the conversationalist, one can immediately see the respect and passion he has for creating his own versions of pizzas.

Guess what? Two new awards since my last visit an, AA rosette for culinary excellence 2016-17 and if that’s not incredible enough they have a second that I had never even heard of, the Vera Pizza

award, vera is the Italian word for true. Cals’own having won this incredible title is even more astounding if you take in to account that Cal is the first ever British chef to be honoured with this award. In fact there is another in our fair isle but the chef that has it is as you would imagine Italian.

If you can resist the pizza their specials board holds delights such as Garlic King Prawns, Insalata Caprese and Bacon Wrapped Dates, but frankly if you have pizza on your doorstep as good as you would find in Napoli and better than you can find anywhere else in the UK including London why try to resist.

So drive if you have to but whatever the case grab yourself a slice of Neapolitan pizza, cooked in an Italian wood-fired oven. You will also find a full bar service with an excellent selection of wines and beers to pair with your amazing food.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

NEWCASTLES TIMES SQUARE WE CAME WE SAW WE DANCED

When we first got wind of this, if I’m honest I was afraid for my health and my sanity, it was an absolutely huge line up and I pretty much to go to it all. Jake Bugg, James, Leftfield, Libertines (with our very own Maximo Park) Manics, Hacienda Classical and Brian Wilson presents Pet Sounds. Go choose?

In the end we decided Libertines was a must see and after the last time we saw Hacienda Classical we had to be there too.

The Libertines strolled on to the stage to a fairly excitable crowd, the repertoire included a huge sing along with the band to ‘What Katie did’ the mayhem that was ‘You cant stand me now’ which in my humble opinion is probably the best track Pete and Carl ever did together. Then an almost haunting rendition of ‘I no longer hear the music’ It was all over much to soon, much beer was thrown around or spilled the rain held off but that didn’t keep me dry.

Eventually we left smelling like a brewery but still smiling, Rock n roll baby.

Speaking of smiling, what a crowd turned up for Hacienda Classical, Its interesting to see the different audiences too, this was no less a party but somehow somewhat more civilized. The music was of course brilliant but its so much more that that. There were hundreds and hundreds wall-to-wall happy smiling people. The age range was vast but the old dance crowd from across the northeast turned up, There were moments when the orchestra was so beautiful it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

In short; Music to give you goose bumps, well done Times Square and long may it continue. We’re lost in music l

SHINDIG

Celebrating a momentous 25-year history, Shindig is one the UK’s renowned clubbing institutions. Ahead of the forthcoming event on August 27th, Juin spoke to boss of the World-famous Circus Events/Recordings, Yousef, about his performance in Newcastle.

This August bank holiday weekend, you’ll be back performing in Newcastle for Shindig at Digital. What are some of your fondest Shindig memories and of Newcastle itself?

At one point I almost moved there, I had such close ties with the region, a girlfriend who was living in Jesmond and I played bi monthly. I was part of the team almost! I recall my first Shindig gig - after some time of trying to get booked they bent and let me play before Darren Emerson. It was 100% vinyl then and they had 4 decks set up so I just got to work doing my thing, and it went very well. After my set, I recall Scott Bradford saying he was truly impressed and that I rocked it like Derrick Carter (who was my hero at the time) but without the mistakes, which couldn’t have been more of a compliment!

Your own Liverpool-based event Circus is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, can you

reveal any tips for longevity in nightlife?

Yes, we are looking forward to a strong run of Circus 15 year events around the globe. The Circus home is resolutely Liverpool though. To remain doing something you love you should take money out the equation, it doesn’t matter what you do. My partner in Circus and our team work incredibly hard to build develop and protect all the time what we have invested into our party. We have always stayed true to our musical roots toounderground house & techno with a musical expansive pallet. If we are into it and its quality we book it!

As you know, Shindig is also celebrating a huge milestone this year of 25 years. What are the biggest similarities between Circus and Shindig events?

I guess we both do what we feel we love and keep going at it!

Finally, can you give us a peek into the plans for the last part of the year for Yousef & Circus?

I’m flat out touring the globe and August is pretty crazy! The Circus 15 album is now done with 15 new tracks made for my label Circus Recordings by the likes of Hot Since 82, Carl Cox, Joris Voorn, Jamie Jones and more. And of course, the Circus events will continue! l

ME AGAIN!

I recently paid a visit to the theatre dahhhhhlings, I know, how very Frasier Crane of me, I’ve seen enough episodes now to deem myself a bit of a clinical psychologist; a skill that comes in handy when psychologically profiling an audience.

I enjoy theatre, it’s a colour movie and in 3D too, sometimes you even get smell-o-vision depending on the person you sit next to, which brings me to my main gripe, THE people! What’s with the audiences of today? In the theatre, cinema and the like? I can’t be the only person that dreads taking my seat to see if I’m sitting next to a circus animal, human bin, or chatterbox?

Most performances are ruined for me by one or all of the above, that appalling lack of manners, it’s like listening to the opera in your headphones while sitting on the metro at 11:45 on a Friday night. It seems to me that some people just can’t help themselves and frankly if they can’t sit for more than a couple of hours without ramming something in their gobs then perhaps have an eating disorder or maybe even diabetes? I could handle all of it if it weren’t for the fact

that invariably it sounds like someone chewing glass or blowing bubbles in a vat of hair gel.

What we need here are rules, you should only be allowed to eat whilst wearing velvet gloves and even then it should be something soft like tinned peaches.

You should not attend if you’re coughing like you have a 40 a day habit, you know, that wet cough that sounds like a dog barking crossed with someone trying to start a two stroke petrol strimmer that spreads across the auditorium like a bacterial Mexican wave.

If it was up to me I would have ushers equipped with paintball guns and the second you made a noise, pow!

None of it would be so upsetting if it was a cheap night out but it’s all the more frustrating because I feel like I get bent over a barrel at the ticket office every time I go as the average theatre ticket is £45, and the cinema £9 plus.

You know you’re getting truly shafted in the dark when all I want is to watch a movie but there is some little cretin on snapchat to his mate all the way through the most important scene.

So there you have it, my theory on why ticket sales are falling and people buy android boxes from Amazon and stay home.

Its simply a vicious circle, where the main problem at the cinema now isn’t the piracy, its YOU! l

STONEY SAYS…

Education! What are we without it? Empty that’s what we are. As we go through life we sometimes take for granted what we have learnt. My career started as a hairdresser at Saks in Newcastle and I was fortunate enough to work with some amazing hairdressers, something I didn’t realise or appreciate till later on in my working life. I have been in this business for 28 years now which has seen me go from apprentice, to junior stylist, to stylist to barber to salon owner to Grand Master Barber to lecturer at south Tyneside college and now a regional educator at the MBA (mobile barbering academy).

I never visualised myself all those years ago being an educator but I have to admit it something I really enjoy. Working at South Tyneside college I get to work with young school leavers and also mature Students, passing on years of knowledge and skills to them. It’s really fulfilling as you know your trying to give these kids the best opportunity and start in there chosen career. Recently I’ve been approached by the MBA which is the brainchild of Jack Robinson Pullen. The MBA is a national training academy which is directed at Barbers and Hairdressers around the country who want

to up there skills and learn about men’s barbering/hairdressing. We teach everything from fading, shaving, advanced barbering, scissor technique.

Myself and Chris Moon from Kutz barbers Newcastle have been chosen as the north east regional educators for the MBA. It’s slightly different to college as your working with skilled/semi skilled learners so it’s a bit easier to teach as they have a better understanding of what we’re doing in practical sessions. So, my point is, if your out there and your wanting to start a career in this wonderful trade, get educated and get educated by the best people you can find wether it be college, apprenticeship or further education l

“A PICTURE PAINTS 1000 WORDS”

BARBERS NOT COWBOYS

On Wednesday, 7 January, a Parliamentary debate which called on the Government to 'change with the times' and put in place compulsory state registration of hairdressers or barbers was heard. In the UK you do not need to have any qualifications to practice as a hairdresser or barber. The hair industry has 38.8 million clients who are currently unprotected from unqualified practitioners, with 351 injuries caused by hairdressers or barbers reported in one year alone.

State registration provides assurance to the customer that the hairdresser or barber is appropriately qualified or has worked as a hairdresser or barber for more than six years. The current legislation governing the practices of hairdressers and barbers dates from the 1964 Hairdressing (Registration) Act. This act enabled the state registration of hairdressing but the system remains entirely voluntary.

We have constantly made it our business to point you in the right direction. Happy new haircut l

SO SPA SO GOOD

GREY STREET’S LUXURY URBAN BEAUTY RETREAT

It’s halfway through the week and I’m tired, stressed and I really need to relax. The sky is grey and the rain is pounding the pavement. As a matter of fact when I walked in to the Grey street hotel and asked the guy on reception to direct me to the spa, he replied, the bar? True story, the point is though, that I was well and truly frazzled and it showed. Lets just say my mood matched the weather.

I was directed downstairs to the brand new All About You, the basement location really works in its favour, I sensed a kind of peacefulness just walking in. I was welcomed by Elaine, the owner of this new paradise slap bang in the city centre, where we chatted for a while about the idea that customers are encouraged to call in after work and enjoy a stress-busting massage before heading home, or pop in with their friends for a manicure or a makeover before a night on the town. For me then after filling in my questionnaire a stressbusting massage, I was handed over to my therapist who whisked me off to a low-lit beautiful treatment room where I smelled various different massage oils to choose my favourite, which turned out to be botanical, I’m a big believer in the fact that your body knows what it needs, be it carbs, sleep, exercise, I seem to be going for botanical products a lot lately, I’m addicted to products like Aesop’s, I may need to do more research on exactly what my bods telling me. In the end though when I got undressed and laid face down between the fluffy warm towels for a massage that started by washing my feet in warm water, working its way up my entire body and ending at my fingertips. What more can I tell you? Not much really, I’m usually errrrr chatty to say the least, but here I reached a level of relaxation that I can’t really explain except to say it was absolute bliss.

The rain was still pouring so I’m sure the skies were still grey but I cant honestly remember, I headed home and that night I slept like I haven’t slept in months which was of course the reason I woke feeling so great the next day l

KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS?

WHAT A CHEEK!!!!

I think that all women (and some guys) have complained at some point in their lives that while dieting they never loose the weight where they want to that’s why we are constantly hearing “oh why cant I lose some of this bum” or it always goes from my boobs first.

Sadly there isn’t a great deal we can do about any of this but; I think everyone that is relatively slim or slims down quickly for a holiday of over a certain age will lose it from their face. This ages you because the cheeks sag and wrinkle and as you age. As this is the case properly placed dermal filler injections can correct age-related volume loss and provide contour and lift, this is where Rachael comes in. As it turns out she isn’t just about frown free brow lifts and kissable lips oh no she’s a cheeky girl too.

Registered nurse Rachel is available for consultations in the comfort of your own home, fillers, skin resurfacing Meso therapy and AQ stamp, with an initial consultation free there certainly something to smile about l CONTACT RACHEL AT THE FACE ON 07876566112

VIRGO: Practicality, prosperity & planning will take up a majority of your month. You are wanting to secure your future and keep your finances flowing. Security is on your mind, especially around your living space. It’s time to plant roots and figure out where you feel is ‘home’.

LEO: Recent stormy waves you have been riding start to settle. As with all storms though, they often leave a messy aftermath and this will force you to make a decision. Letting go is never easy but it’s essential at this time. Set a new course, the transition may not be easy but it will lead to a much more fulfilling phase.

LIBRA: Thoughts of yester-year fill your mind as you take a stroll down memory lane. Past events could serve as a source of inspiration, you may have a second chance to change an outcome. Reunions, reconnecting and renewal look likely, so maybe call on the gift of hindsight to make sure you don’t end up living with regrets.

SCORPIO: Why are you looking at that pool of spilt milk? There isn’t anything you can do about it now. Things may be a little bit messy but the best thing to do with mess is clean up what you can and then forget about it. Sweep that dark cloud that is looming over you away, move on and move upwards, the milk was going to go off anyway!

SAGITTARIUS: Check you out rocking your creative brain! Art, music, and colour are filling your world and you are dancing to the beat of your own drum. Ideas are a plenty and doors are ready to open for you. You are shining brightly, your magnetism and winning charm will get you everywhere. The limelight is yours, revel in it.

CAPRICORN: It’s back to school as the universe wants to teach you something. If you study hard and take notice of the lesson plan, you will end up top of the class. No playing out on a school night though, get your head in those books and be open to the wonderful knowledge and wisdom that is about to be presented to you. If you put the hard work in you will get the rewards.

AQUARIUS: Ostrich syndrome is not going to work for you this time. You need to sit up and take notice to what is being presented to you. Apathy has taken over and your ‘What’s the point?’ attitude could lead you to miss out on a golden opportunity. Give yourself a shake, turn that pout into a smile. When you smile at the world, it will most certainly smile back!

PISCES: Your dreams could become reality now, so that idea you have been thinking about needs action. Give the lovely folks over at the Dragons Den a call as your entrepreneurial mind could be on to a winner. Keep your mind on the job in hand and as Del boy said to Rodders “This time next year.....” Dream big!

ARIES: Why so serious? You do realise that being cold and hard doesn’t suit you right? All it does is keep you segregated rather than protecting you. You could be your own worst enemy, Why not put the iron fist down and replace it with those lovely kit gloves. You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

TAURUS: I’m sure Bob Dylan’s song Like a rolling stone should be your theme tune. You feel left out in the cold, isolated and possibly rejected. Loss of some sort is making you feel like you have failed, but look at it this way, you have only learnt how not to do something. Ask for support, it is there, remember he also sang Shelter from the storm.

GEMINI: I know rest is a four letter word but come on.... Time out is needed, you are on the verge of burn out, there is no point in just hoping things will change, you need to make it happen and your first port of call should be looking after number one! You cannot give from an empty cup, so take a break, fill yourself back up. Meditation and contemplation are your prescriptions from the universe, take daily as needed.

CANCER: If cut you in half I’m sure love would be written through you like a stick of rock!. You are channelling your inner ‘Earth mother’ and want to care for and nurture whoever crosses your path. Love is all you need at the moment, you have so much of it that you are sprinkling it wherever you go. A great time to start growing something new. Love is limitless and the soil is very fertile.
