2023 How did this happen? its like everyone hibernated, or at least we did, and you know what? there is value in that too. ‘Put yourself back together, that will be your job for a while, take your time and let that be your preoccupation.’ That’s great advice when you’re feeling completely overwhelmed,…and yes you’re welcome.

There are very important people to thank here too, those of you that help us get back on our feet by putting your hand in your pocket, we certainly felt the love. So WE thank you, thats Kelly (once designer now partner in crime too) and I of course.

I guess it just goes to show, its true that the more love you give the more you get :)

IT TAKES GREAT COURAGE TO SEE THE WORLD IN ALL ITS TAINTED GLORY, AND STILL LOVE IT!

Around April this year a strange phenomenon began to occur. Suddenly and without notice there were poems mysteriously appearing as huge paste ups around Newcastle.

Very curious.

As spring turned to summer several more popped up firstly around the Ouseburn, then Heaton, then Town.

When the accompanying QR code was scanned it took you to an Insta account @ thewritingisonthewall.art where there were pics of poems popping all over Europe.

Oslo, Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, London to name a few.

At first it appeared the North East might have simply been the first stop for this roaming Street Poet, or as they describe themselves ‘Wall Botherer’, but the poems kept returning to the Toon so one can only assume that this must be home-base.

Of late collabs. have appeared with other local street artists such as Cack-Handed Kid, Van Goth, Mul and even Amsterdam’s prolific Laser 3.14 whose much loved ‘Shy Bairns Get Nowt’ tag has been a firm favourite with art fans for some years.

I don’t know about you, but I find something very refreshing about the work. Although I love poetry when I think about it I think of dusty library books and GCSE English Lit.

It’s almost like when you grow up poetry is destined to leave you and be banished to your youthful past.

The paste ups are sometimes spiritual, sometimes political (whoever is doing it is certainly no fan of those ruling the roost in Westminster!) but always edgy.

They kind of brighten up your day when you spot a new one, and finding them is a bit like Pokemon Go but not as geeky.

There are a lot of blank walls in the world and the only time there are any words or images on them usually is if some big corporation has paid for a billboard so seeing poetry published in this way is refreshing.

Will more poems appear? Where will they pop up?

Who knows but for now the writing is most definitely on the wall l

SADLY SOMETIMES IT COSTS BROKEN HEARTS TO CRACK OPEN DOORWAYS TO A WORLD FULL OF CHANGE AND NEW BEGINNINGS

Ambers Law was set up in 2017 following the tragic death of Sunderland girl Amber Rose Cliff, Amber was diagnosed cervical cancer which subsequently spread to her lungs and throat aged just 22.

Amber’s legacy is still ongoing 5 years later, raising awareness of cervical cancer symptoms and promoting screening uptake amongst women and people with a cervix who are eligible through the NHS screening programme.

Amber was a university graduate and a shining star both socially and in her work life, she was the youngest ever housing officer to work for Gentoo where she tirelessly supported her tenants, a that legacy of support that continues through her charity and campaigns.

A more recent NHS vaccination programme allows girls and boys aged around 12 to be immunised against HPV, Amber’s charity would encourage parents and carers alike to allow their children to have the immunisation, to date is the biggest breakthrough in the world of cervical cancer prevention.

People who have HPV between the ages of 16 & 18 have a shown a significant increased risk of cervical cancer, simply by having the vaccine and taking up PAP screening (smear) they are taking significant steps towards preventing their chances of developing cell changes in the cervix which could lead to cancer, the risk is just to great to ignore.

In an age where women are claiming their femininity and sexuality, after decades, no centuries, of little girls should be seen and not heard and: women should not enjoy sex and god forbid mentioning enjoying it with another women.

A long overdue sexual awakening for the fairer sex is well and truly upon us and it is EVERYWHERE!

Gone are the days when women were expected to be Maralynesqe to dress for the opposite sex, hide their talents to make their man feel needed, sorry guys we change a tyre and a fuse and are doing just about every single job that men do too. This is not to say of course that we don’t love having you around or that you aren’t excellent cooks or babysitters.

The reason for all of this is of course, from a female perspective that we have escaped the kids and the kitchen and become the breadwinners, not alway by choice, we need to be both strong and feminine, often due to the financial pressure of modern day living, just as some men have slipped in to the stay at home dad role and done so beautifully, we salute you guys, its tough isn’t it?

Speaking of tough, I automatically think strong and strong is where its at now, after a pandemic and a disastrous effects on businesses and lifestyles, we have seen the rise of incredibly strong men and women, both physically and emotionally. The difference between the sexes seems to be increasingly blurred.

Perhaps i shouldn’t have referred to sex in the opening paragraph because when it comes to the latest fitness craze POLE DANCING we (even us girls) think sleazy bars and scantily clad ladies performing for men’s enjoyment. When in actual fact there are studios opening up all over the country and to aficionados it is freedom, strength sexuality; its art. Only possible at a cost of a fair amount of sweat, slips strains and bruises.

I have written about many a fitness fad over the years bur this strikes me as neither a fad nor a sex thing, its about strength, interestingly the women I know that have take this up think of it more as a sport, like maybe gymnastics, and I have seen them grow stronger both physically and in confidence too. Don’t get me wrong its not for the faint hearted, letting go of a pole that you

have gripped only with your inner thigh is already brave, but no instructor/ trainer worth their salt is going to let you do anything sill and personally I think that being able to climb up the pole with your hands and stay there in your first lesson or two is a real achievement.

In the scheme of things (if you have the space somewhere to install it) buying your own pole- after a few lessons of course, is a great investment. I have friends that have had them installed in their garages and attics and they love it.

I am not suggesting of course that you dash out but a pole and install it yourself (although if you’re the handy type perhaps you could) but I doubt you would get very far without some serious strengthening exercise and a really good teacher however if you just fancy a bit of a laugh, pole dancing parties are also a thing just get a few friends together and off you go!

OH NO LOVE YOU'RE NOT ALONE

Addiction: I know strong word for an intro right? the thing is, its the A word that no-one wants to talk about. be it drugs or alcohol if you love or live with or care about someone that is abusing a substance, chances are you're being abused too. I don't necessarily mean physically but simply put your proximity to someone who's an addict can have a devastating effect on your mental wellbeing and caring for them can cause resentment, exhaustion and ultimately a breakdown in the relationship.

Enter. PROPS, family recovery service and the, frankly fabulous CRAFT programme PROPS help you to understand your situation and ensure you and your family stay safe. While offering support to help you cope with difficult situations and behaviours. Ensuring you look after your personal wellbeing so that you are well enough and able to help your family member.

This is where it gets personal, six months ago I was in that situation, I think the expression my mum would have used is ‘at the end of my tether’ and left my loved one because I simply could not cope with the idea that I came second to alcohol. I have no idea how I knew that PROPS existed but as soon as I called there was someone on the end of the phone that understood… all of it. The absolute helplessness and the inability to discuss the problem with the person causing my anguish. That’s when I was invited along to the Fenham branch of this amazing charity, and where I

met, Julie Gardener.

I’m pretty sure now, that Julie is my guardian angel, she listened to me say… I can’t take it anymore, I don’t want to, sob hiccup, and somewhere between the snot and tears (mine) and the hundreds of tissues and cups of tea (Julie’s) she took a deep breath and calmly told me that yes I could do something, that she would help, and started to talk to me about CRAFT; Community Reinforcement And Family Training.

What followed were group meetings with some other wonderful (but also suffering) individuals whom are caring for people with addictions, as a group we began not only to understand that addicts can’t help it, thats the point, and with craft training we all began our journey towards fixing ourselves again so that we could help our, lovers, siblings, parents and children.

There is no way that I can begin to explain how it all works except to say that Julie was there for weepy phone calls, romantic dilemmas and all with a smile, It makes me feel better just thinking about that…calmness.

Things are so much better now I don’t know where to begin to thank the whole PROPS team, ANON l

It is a pleasure to talk with someone who's ethos is not only very commendable, but is also very very different to the norm yet makes absolute sense.

It's hardly surprising considering how many years Sam has spent in the fitness industry, that he has such educated and considered ideas about how we should go about getting fit. Neither is it surprising that being a surf aficionado he understands perfectly the value of the bodies core and balance.
