10 YEARS

MAY YOUR CHRISTMAS BE WRAPPED IN HAPPINESS AND TIED WITH LOVE. & 2024, BRING YOU ALL THAT YOU WISH FOR!

Kelly & Juin x

EDITORS LETTER H ELLO NE LOVERS.

I obviously have to start this with a massive thank you to all of you who have supported us throughout the last 10 years, yes 10 years.

It's difficult to believe where, I finally found the strength and faith in myself to go for it.

I would be lying if I said it had been easy, I think it was a knee jerk reaction to having my heart broken by a partner I trusted, losing both my parents and having to move out of my flat in the city centre, all in the space of about 18 months. I think that all that kept me going for a while there was my penchant for vodka and popping over the road to No28 at all hours of the night to drink it in great company. It's fair to say I was traumatised and I had to call it Love because I felt such a lack of it at that time. Thats when I put my big girl pants on, and with the help of the Murphy's Eric Ade and Alisia I managed to muddle my way through that first edition. Since then Michael Ritson and Kelly Flood (both incredible designers) have stepped up to the plate. and I met all of you amazing people. All of those AMAZING WOMEN.... you know who you are. Get thee behind me naysayer, conspiracy theorist and Debbie downers and let us say a great big THANK YOU to all you absolutely beautiful believers, that know 100% how contagious your smiles are :) WE LOVE YOU 2024 BRING IT ON. LOVE…DONT BE GREEDY…PASS IT ON!

PRETTY POLLY kelly catches up with the enigmatic Polyvinyl Q Tell us abit about Polyvinyl - how did it all start, who are you? John: Well we’re a band from the NE of England, we all knew each other individually, but primarily, me, Jamie and Ryan played together previously in another band, and after a few false starts we decided to take things more seriously and start Polyvinyl. We then started looking for a second guitarist and vocalist. We then asked our life long friend, Jake, to join us on guitar. We all love Jake and he adds such a unique style and character to the band. We then asked another lifelong friend, Hannah to join on vocals, who we had previously played with at St Joseph's school. So the next day, we rehearsed and polyvinyl officially was born!. Q What is your creative process like? Jamie: Well, we rehearse religiously, every Thursday. We have a good understanding of the need for a balance between the importance of commitment and the ability to form a creative environment to write in. We jam a lot, take turns with the lyric writing, to try and combine styles and ideas. John: In terms of writing music, it's usually an idea of one of us bringing an initial idea to the practice room Hannah: It usually starts with a riff, and as far as lyrics, we all have an eclectic mix of influences that seem to combine together well. John: The subject matter is mainly story NEL VE.CO.UK / TEN

based. Hannah: Yes, they do tend to be quite narrative in nature. We often come up with characters within our songwriting too. John: And none of them are particularly happy! We realised this relatively early on, we haven't really written your typical love song yet, and we’re starting to think maybe we never will! Hannah: All the characters we create are going through something John: Yeah, they're all going through something isolating, and we try to keep it relatable as possible. But we're always having fun when writing. Q What’s your debut EP Closure about? Jamie: So this was based around the process of grieving. Each song represents each of the stages of grief. We wrote the songs, then actually came up with the concept for the EP afterwards. We firmly believe that a collection of songs should be just that, and, although you can enjoy a song by itself, that it should be improved by the context. I'm proud to say that I feel like our debut EP, “Closure” achieves that. Q How would you describe your sound? Hannah sounds like a crossbetween Blondie and Chrissy Hynde and some of the stuff isn’t unlike the pretenders, whats your inspiration/influences? John: For a start, as individuals, we all have different tastes. I think me and Hannah have quite similar tastes, but

even then, we differ a lot too. Band: David Bowie, Beatles, Bleachers, 1975, LCD Soundsystem. A lot of new wave revival and post punk basically! Quite a mix of styles really! We still like a lot of contemporary music too like, Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Wire, Radiohead. And loads of 80s stuff like Smiths, Siouxxie, Pretenders etc. Q What new music do you like? Jamie: Softplay, and of course, The new Beatles Song! John: Bleachers, Im really loving Hannah: There's so much great local music too, Blom are really great, and then there’s the more alternative stuff, like Richard Dawson. We’re very lucky to have such great new music in our region. Jamie: Then there's our dear friends Catch the Sparrow and MXYM who both supported us alongside Steff Mundi on our EP launch show too, definitely worth checking out. Q Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows? John: We have a show at Bobiks on 26th November, Independent Venue Week next Feb 2nd at the Globe. We are currently securing some festival slots for next summer too, so keep your eyes peeled on our social media (@polyvinylband) Jamie: MY favourite has always been riverside, I played years ago in another › ›

band, and would love to play that stage again with Polyvinyl Jake: I really love the Cluny and Cluny2, both amazing venues! John: In terms of least favourite venues, we don’t really have them! We always focus on the crowd in front of us and the energy in the room. There are of course times where things go wrong, but that’s not necessarily a reflection on the venue itself. We understand how hard it is for venues to operate these days, and are always happy to be playing. Q Who would you most like to collaborate with? Hannah: I'd love to collaborate with PJ Harvey, she's a genius. I have listened to her since I was about 12 years old and just love her mix of punk and folk and both of those genres are very important to me too. John: Jack Antanoff for me, he seems like such a nice guy and he’s doing some amazing stuff at the moment. NEL VE.CO.UK / TWELVE

Ryan: Josh Homme (so i can record in his LA, desert studio!) Jamie: Mark Owen from take that! Jake: The Strokes. Q Do you have any back stage rituals? John: I don’t Hannah: I always have to have a pint first! Or else, my nerves tend to get the better of me. Q What is the best advice you’ve been given? Jamie: Best bit of advice I was ever given was from Graham Lewis of Wire. He said, “Anyone can write a song about anything”. It really inspired me to write all the time, and constantly think about songwriting throughout the day. John: He also advised me about getting our own sound engineer as soon as possible. Also, in terms of practising etc, we talked about watching the Beatles’ Get Back and how they keep their writing and

rehearsal sessions fun, and there was plenty of experimentation and messing around enabling them to write some really interesting songs. Hannah: For me, it was realising that the performance element is just as important as the sound. Ryan: Also, it's important to enjoy the music that you make. We have played in bands previously, and not enjoyed what we were creating. I think the audience can tell when an artists’ heart isn't in it, so we always make sure to keep that in mind when writing and performing. Q What does 2024 look like for you? Jamie: Well, Ryan’s getting married! John: We have some festival slots lined up for next summer. And we also have our second EP out early 2024, which we are currently working on. There’ll be a short film accompanying this too, so there's lots to do, but we’re really excited about what 2024 will bring for us l

I had a conversation with my beautiful German friend Anja one day when we were lazing around a costa blanca beach topless, yes cos we still can, And suddenly she broaches the subject of menopause, but from a very different perspective, to the usual. I was gobsmacked when she he said ‘ I don't know how you feel about it but I feel totally free’ Of course I ask what exactly what she means? ‘and I quote ‘I don't make bad choices just because I want to get laid’, thats brilliant right? When the NEED for sex has gone its a whole new story ……….And oh sorry guys if you're the type of person that thinks that it’s just men who have urges/needs you will you need to rethink that too obviously. The difference being of course that men allegedly think of nothing else (every 7 seconds) wth? How do you have time for anything else? Anyhoooo, I digress again massively, No change there then :) Back to the subject of us women, and the fact that suddenly it seems that menopause is not all bad, and in this day and age it's pretty much controllable insofar as the nasty symptoms are concerned. HRT oh glory be :) I can believe I’m selling you the positives of men-o-pause no, and of course some women have a really hard time, so sorry in advance if that's your case. It seems that I have been thinking a lot lately about time and aging because this kind of takes me back again to the piece from a few months ago called ‘One foot in the rave’

I mention this again now because, just after the topless beach convo, I was at a very cool, possibly my fave North East haunt, ‘let's just say for arguments sake, Im at King Street in North Shields, in any event the conversation in the ladies loo turns to??? You got it menopause!! I have not lost my marbles; this conversation was actually joyful. Why? I hear you ask. Because suddenly I am totally immersed in Anya’s. These are women I respect and admire on so many levels, for the most part professional women that still party, are really interested in quality music, art and fashion, and are rejoicing in it all now. No longer controlled by those pesky hormones. They are out, out dancing, getting great haircuts wearing amazing clothes. Just think, prior to this toilet convo I was thinking It was about time to hang up my dancing boots! I know, right? Get us lot; topless sunbathing and raving! Yey! What would our mothers say? Its so sad that just a few years ago women were more or less led to believe that once your reproductive days were over you were too, more or less, buy a comfy cardi and go to the bingo and…….. Well fade! You know what I say “Shine on Sister” you are free!!!!! “Don't make a sound, don't throw it all away, remember me so tenderly, Don't let it slip away. It's not over not over not over yet” l

GANGLAM STYLE Seoul’s southern beauty district No matter how you feel about going under the knife (or needle) fillers and anti wrinkle treatments are very much de rigueur these days and it's pretty easy (if you choose your therapist carefully of course) to see why. If you look better you feel better, simples, right? What would you say if I told you that there was a place where these things are celebrated, an idea I love because I know a few of my peeps developed a sudden pout for example and deny - Why Deny?, it's just silly and believe you me it's not the ones that have gone for the natural look either. Anyway as I was saying in Seoul it's celebrated, Ganglam does have the highest number of cosmetic surgeons per capita but those are being replaced by non invasive cosmetic contouring and toning. These range from ones I have heard of to injecting ‘salmon sperm DNA’ don't knock it right? Also the drop in no down time treatments are attractive,

but add to that laser lifting costs just 30 English pounds and lip edge filler at about 40? That’s a treatment that can cost you upward of 600 dollars in New York. That's not all, since the government seems to agree with me! (there's a first) because they believe that attractive people find it easier to get jobs, you can get tax breaks!! Yea tax breaks for your treatments. I know obviously that not everyone is a fan and believes in natural beauty; fyi me too but I just like the idea of hanging on to it for as long as you can. And while you're all mulling it over, has anyone got Rishi Sunak’s number? I'm sure I can convince him that a more beautiful, happier Britain is good for the economy. :) Alternatively of course you can go to one of OUR reputable therapists that offer payment plans & you can thank me later :) l SEVENTEEN / NEL VE.CO.UK

NE LOVES 10 MINUTES WITH

JUNKYARD QUEEN TORIA DE ROSI (GET to know our NE Loves) 1. What first attracted you to your profession? I actually booked into a salon to have my hair done and loved the vibe in there so much, how the team interacted with one another and their guests and thought I want to be part of this industry 2. Fave hairstyle and product? My current favourite is a shullet which is a modern take on a mullet and a shag 3. Fave celebrity hair? I’d say Miley Cyrus all recent hairstyles have been awesome but the classic all time favourite has to be Joan jett! 4. Re celebrities, who's your crush? Hmmm don’t really have a celebrity crush but I’ve always been slightly obsessed with Madonna! 5. If you had a time machine what year would you go to? I love that I got my childhood in the 80s, teens in the 90s so was blessed with the best NEL VE.CO.UK / EIGHTEEN

kids tv/toys and then amazing ground breaking music for my teens (imo) but if I could time travel as an adult then probably the 80s! 6. Which movie could you watch over and over? Hands down rocky horror picture show 7. What's the best advice you have ever been given? What people think of you is none of your business 8. Name 3 things on your bucket list? Travel to Hawaii Have a second home in the USA I need to think about the third I’m pretty content with where I am right now 9. What do you like most about yourself? Probably my resilience I think I have the ability to work through challenges and see the positives 10. Back to hairdressing…tell me about a client that made you want to

run screaming from the salon… No names…unless it was me. OMG it was me wasn't it? Haha no comment! I’m joking it absolutely isn’t you! I’ve been lucky I’ve never had a nightmare client to be fair, but it all comes down to communication and managing expectations, although I’d say one of the hardest things to learn to do is say no, we always as hairstylists want to deliver and make our clients happy but sometimes, especially I think after the few years we have had as an industry on the whole we need to learn to have boundaries and be ok with turning work down or being able to tell someone you’re not prepared to compromise on a service that isn’t right for them or us. Love spending time in the company of this kind beautiful down to earth woman So would you! l

BEWITCHING BEAUTY Many moons ago a woman that had an incredible influence on my current mindset bought me rosemary plants and told me that if you planted them in your front and back doorways nothing bad could get in. I have had it ever since. But dear rosemary does more than just protect you, it takes care of your hair too, Yep shinier thicker longer hair in just a few months, and bonus if you have those babies protecting you from evil you can use them to protect your locks too. Here’s how! Cut some rosemary sprigs into small pieces to release their aromatic oils. Pour into a saucepan some coconut and castor oil then add the chopped rosemary. Heat the saucepan over low heat and let the mixture simmer gently for about 30 minutes. You can massage this oil in to your roots and treat your split ends to leave on for as long as you feel you need but not overnight. Or make a slightly more potent blend and then mix it into shampoo or conditioner, adding it to your shampoo or conditioner means you get the benefits while washing your hair. Just be sure to thoroughly wash your hair to get the product out well. On that note it’s probably wise to do a patch test the day before home made the oil conditioner and a word to the wise, be careful with your eyes l You’re welcome :) Merry Part x

IT’S LIKE A FINE WINE If you have been to 28 before chances are that you have been many times. If however you have never been…. why? Just why? Living in the city centre you tend to pop in to all of the bars at one point or another “oh that’s new let’s try that” but there’s just something about the hidden gem above the Grainger Market that draws you in time and time again, an inexplicable je ne sais quoi. Yes of course it has a kind of cosmopolitan cool, the best cocktails ever, great staff and when there is music: the music has its own 28 vibe. It’s to be expected I guess as 28’s owner DJ’d for years on the local scene and let just say he know a tune or two. This particular Friday Kelly and I are feeling slightly overwhelmed after a crazy deadline we are peckish tired and in need of a pick me up. Where do we head? You guessed it! Today we are too tired even for a proper booze up but the food looks really appetising. Thankfully we opted for just two ‘small’ plates, Fried Halloumi, not under normal circumstances anything NEL VE.CO.UK / THIRTY6

to write home about but this, with mint yoghurt and pomegranate molasses is divine. There was no question that our other ‘small plate” they aren’t small, was Korean belly pork bites, the perfect amount of kick with Kimichi and pink ginger with spring onion, no that’s the kind of food people like me would fight you for! Last but not least the Large Plate aka massive plate, No28’s own Cuban Sandwich: Mojo pork, cured ham, Swiss cheese and pickles. Delicious (tip if you’re having this you don’t need a side of fries,, as delicious as the Parmesan truffled fries are, and believe me they are. So! there you have it peeps, another of the reasons that draw me time and time back to the scene of many cocktails, laughs smiles fun ambience, dancing and great music. No28 What’s not to LOVE! l

I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY! Here at NE Love our tastes in everything from art to fashion to music are eclectic to say the least, so I was very excited to find something that literally soothes the soul, Steve Luck contacted us by chance and I at first thought that I had been so moved by the music simply because of my state of mind on first hearing it. So moved in fact that I was tearful. I love strings, and piano was always something I wish I had learned, and now by sheer 'luck' and in the current climate and ugly wars and hate crimes I find something that you just makes you think of beauty. I listened to it today and again was moved: not to tears today, but pensive, it's a nice soothing feeling aided and abetted by these beautiful city written tunes by Steve Luck, in the heart of Newcastle. I don't know, it feels 'reassuring' somehow? If you feel the need for some head space, the need to relax or think, or clear your head this one is for you. I was recently abroad and it was a clear starry night, I was looking up and thinking how incredibly tiny and insignificant we are, when I got a call to say we had lost a family member, I was sad of course grieving BUT, realised that we should celebrate just being here every single day, Its hard when its cold and dank outside and such sad things happen, so maybe look for the positives in all the small things, and when you lift your glass this New Years, try to remember the good stuff and how lucky we truly are, move on with an open mind, there is beauty all around! I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY! NEL VE.CO.UK / THIRTY8

Enough from me, here are a few words from the man himself about my favourite track from his forthcoming album have a listen. Blue Dot This is a meditative solo piano piece inspired by the famous Pale Blue Dot image of earth taken in 1990 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft from 3.8 billion miles away. Scientist Carl Sagan said of the image “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world...our posturing’s, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.” https://youtu.be/7ijDtp1Vc5o l
