These days, just about anything you want can be delivered to your home, office or secret hide out spot.

For those afraid of human contact, you can happily tap away at your keyboard in your underpants and magically make your weekly shopping appear at your door so not a priceless second of daytime TV is missed.

Given all the development in deliveries, such as supposedly accurate time windows, that we all know fizzle out into nothing, the goods you wait in for all day just get left in the wheelie bin.

Takeaways will always have a place in the hearts of those beyond those of the North-East. And we’ve all diced with death when eating a ropey curry and spent longer on the toilet the next day

after losing the battle with a manky kebab. We’re done with poor imitation Italian pizza and Chinese food turning up in depresses looking packages. Give us something new, different and most of all, something that when connected to our tongue that sends signals to the brain that makes it go “what the f**k was that?” Thank you Deli Delivered for doing just that.

The deli hasn’t just sprung up overnight. This is the hard work and determination of Ash, a former chef at Scallinis and Lewis who frequently visited Deli Espresso, before entering into business with him. With a passion for baking and creating, it’s easy to see how the business has become a success.

With a creative menu, there is a fine variety of

savoury, sweet and a brand new range of healthy salads, drinks and soups. There is literally something for everyone with a keen emphasis on sourcing local produce; you can rest assured that everyone working for Deli Delivered care as much about creating the product as you will devouring a sandwich or milkshake.

For first time buyers, just go for the Oreo Brownie. You can thank us later l

WELL I’LL bE bURgER’ED

Yes the humble (or not so humble) burger is the latest craze to sweep our glorious nation; the Londoners are queuing at venues all over our illustrious capital to get their teeth in to the perfect burger.

After all there are literally hundreds of places to try them and almost all have a signature or favorite to make your mouth water and some of them serve nothing else.

It is causing a furor with celebrity chefs up and down the country; worried that the fancy food industry is going off the boil, personally I love a great burger. It all takes me back to my days living in London, and my first visit to Hard Rock Café and it was fab, Interesting trivia: did you know that the name came from a bar that the Doors called in to for a quick drink while recording Morrison Hotel? They subsequently named side one of the album Hard Rock Café.

Later Morton and Tigrett contacted the band and said “ we are opening a café here in London do you mind if we use the name ‘Hard Rock Café? Morison simply said, “No, go ahead, fine”

Lets forget the smog for a moment though, I don’t expect any of you fancy a three n a half hour train journey for a burger, and why would you, when there are fabulous meaty treats to tantalize your taste buds right on your very own doorstep.

Whoops and the odd excellent vegie option too; sorry the carnivore in me keeps on resurfacing at the very thought of it.

Want to find them? Simples read on, the following pages will have you bolting out of your front door whatever the weather.

Happy Hunting!!!!!

Take everything you know about bars on Osborne road and forget it, Jam Jar has all of the ambience is Uber cool and isn’t in the slightest bit pretentious, rustic wooden tables, large squishy sofas, some fabulous vintage pieces and a sprinkling of neon light. Perfect! But as cozy as it is, this is not about the décor. Jam Jar is about food, and great food at that, from breakfast deals to the supper club from Fillet of venison with creamed celeriac and truffle-poached mushrooms. To this, Pie night at the jar. Tonight’s pie...Chicken, mushroom and tarragon served with seasonal veg, creamed mash potato and braising liquor. There is something for everyone, but this is in fact about the burgers.

We popped in to Jam Jar the other night for a glass of wine and to find out why, or how they are creating such buzz, and in fact, discover first hand what all of the fuss is about.

The staff at Jam Jar are friendly, and attentive enough to let you know they are there, without being at your elbow the whole time, I have had the misfortune to eat in places where I felt they couldn’t get you out quick enough. Not here!

That particular evening our waitress was the lovely Claire, already determined, we passed on the healthy options and the pub classics to get stuck in to,,,,, you got it, burgers!

For me of course the Jam burger, well it would be rude not to. Aged seven-ounce steak patty with cheese and caramelized red onion, bacon, ripe tomato their secret recipe sauce all stacked beautifully in a homemade brioche bun, Wow.

I chose the sweet potato fries as a side. Had realized the size of the burger I might have missed out the fries but I’m so glad I didn’t, the Jam burger is huge, beautifully presented and has to be eaten with a knife and fork or at least cut in to four chunks, it smelled amazing, the

meat just melts in your mouth, the brioche was soft and fresh and the cheese and sauce work perfectly together. Sweet potato fries, I may never eat another normal chip.

If my burger was huge Michael’s Cow v Pig was monumental, and is in fact the same as my Jam burger BUT with a pulled pork burger on top, and a mustard-mayo slaw. Somewhat precariously balanced Claire somehow managed to get to our table upright (the burger I mean not Claire ☺ I didn’t actually believe that anyone could get through this mammoth burger especially when potato fries accompanied it. I hear, it was delicious and judging by the smile on M’s face I believe it.

Great cocktails check. Great atmosphere, check. Great food check, Great staff check. Worth checking out? Most definitely l 88 Osborne Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 2AP 0191 9087158

Fast food? Healthy burger? Yes you heard me, Healthy fast food!

Go Japan, Japanese food with a real twist, I never thought I would ever come across a place like this, and this place is a must! If you haven’t been there yet that’s probably because the “Go! a taste of Japan” has only been around for five moths, nevertheless the concept has proved so successful that the franchise is about to be rolled out in five other cities over the coming months. Luckily for us Newcastle is the first.

Japanese burgers?

We tried the Japanese belly pork and chicken teriyaki, both served in a pale steamed bun, quite a strange looking very pale bread, made from unbleached flour imported specially and exclusively from Japan. Both ‘burgers’ were packed with sumptuous meat, cucumber, lettuce, tomato and a delicious Japanese mayonnaise. Available to eat in or take away the food is also presented in pristine minimal recyclable packaging, hardly surprising then, that Go has already proved a massive hit with the nearby shop and office workers.

It was fascinating to hear that these burgers when analyzed and are lower in salt, fat and sugar than any other burger on the market.

The latest to be added to the menu is the Wagyu burger; the meat is striking because of its wonderful marbling which results in a never-before-experienced succulence that promises to send the taste buds reeling. The fat in the meat has more monounsaturated fats than average meat so it melts at room temperature which makes Wagyu beef suitable as part of a lower-cholesterol diet. This is a result of the stock being fed a special diet and massaged three times a day resulting the most tender of meats. As a result this burger carries a price tag in London of between £69 and £99.

Unbelievably the only place the Wagyu is available, outside London is at at Go, where it is on the menu at an incredible £9.99, after sampling the pork and chicken I simply can not wait to try Wagyu!

Go Japan, also serve prawn or lamb ‘burgers’, sushi, miso soup, deserts, juices, great coffee, green tea and fabulous smoothies. Not to mention smiles and great service.

The De Giorgis the Geordie-Italian family have been cultural catalysts in this city for over forty years. Today, Joseph, Cristina and Aldo are the trio behind Gusto UK, who’ve helped shape some of the city’s best-loved bars and bistros Popolo’s, Alvinos, 9Bar Coffee and Don Vito’s, Secco,Paradiso.

The cocktail bar at Popolo’s captured everyone’s imagination well over a decade ago. The suave surroundings and exquisite top shelf spirits have been the cause of many a hangover over the years, now we are to see this happen all again with the launch of the brand new dAt bAr.

The huge oval bar with twenty keg lines offer up a rotating fifty keg beer list, set off by a huge hand drawn mural of punk and rock and roll iconography. Forget your clinical clean lines and subdued colour palette, dAt bAr is undeniably and unashamedly in your face.

The rear area of the bar sees sumptuous leather booths overlooking the open kitchen. Freshly made sourdough pizzas are in abundance, along with what Aldo hopes to be the world’s best burger.

Much like the screen-printed decor of 9Bar Coffee, dAt bAr positively buzzes, from its fifties jukebox, sixties motorcycle, and seventies car doors, the bar is a perfect collage of sights and sounds l

If NEcTAR mADE fOOD, IT wOULD PROBABLY BE… OH HANG ON A SEcOND THEY DO!

But wait a moment I don’t want to pigeonhole Nectar, as a bar, at night for a few drinks, full of the beautiful people. It HAS fab food and one of the finest mixologists I have ever had the good fortune to meet and who is currently a finalist in the Licensed trade International awards, so get voting guys.

Add to all this the recent arrival of Junipers Pantry to Nectar’s kitchen with their ‘cuisine d’exellence‘, the great music, and really, why go anywhere else?

This week I had the pleasure of finding out exactly what all the fuss is about.

The bar menu is extremely reasonably priced, and delights such as duck pork shoulder and black pudding burger, with caramelized onion, aged Cheddar, and house salad. For the vegetarians, linguini with tomato and basil and rosemary focaccia with grilled goat’s cheese. If the bar menu is making you salivate let me tell you about the restaurant food.

For starters: for me crispy goats cheese croquet served with butternut squash puree, pimiento

pepper and rocket with balsamic vinegar. The croquet was a lot bigger than I had anticipated, also so pretty it seemed a shame to eat it. Melt in the mouth hot goats cheese along with the other flavors explode and then melt in the mouth, luckily I had erred on the side of caution and ordered a lighter main course.

It was quite a cool evening so my dining companion had gone for slow roasted tomato and basil soup with rosemary infused focaccia, I managed to resist stealing any of this; not my usual style, but I was assured that it was as delicious as it smelled.

Next up the mains, I went for something from the restaurant menu. Pan-fried butterflied sea bass with parmentiere potatoes, salsa verde and chargrilled purple broccoli. Again perfectly presented the fish was moist and the underside crispy, perfect alongside the potatoes and salsa verde. My partner in crime opted for Chorizo and pork shoulder burger with carameliesed onion relish, aged cheddar and triple cooked chips. This I couldn’t resist trying, and believe me it was one hundred percent as good as it sounds.

All of this was topped off with an assortment of five cheeses (one of which was fried, yum) and home made focaccia. The perfect end to a perfect dinner. It is also rumored that Nectar/ Junipers Pantry

serve a legendary Sunday lunch. At this rate I will be in there for cocktails on a Saturday night and trying to get a stay over for lunch on Sunday l

Candice Tripp born in Cape Town, South Africa moved to the UK in 2004 to pursue her art career, establishing herself in Newcastle Upon Tyne. We caught up with the Sally Doll artist in her North East studio to delve into her creative mind.

WHAT’S THE WORST THIng yOU’VE EVER HAD TO DO On A jOb?

CAnDICE Easy: I worked as a photographer in the ecommerce department of a luxury-clothing store. When we weren’t shooting products on stuffed dummies, we shot products on real-live humans; Ones that have thoughts, feelings and holes.

Halfway through assisting on a shoot I was asked to clean a model’s vaginal discharge out of the gusset of a pair of leather Diane Von Furstenberg trousers that had already been sold online. I did it with a baby wipe in the Accounts

department. At the time the horror was too large for me to appreciate the smaller contributing factors, which made it worse; notably, the fact the radio was tuned to Heart. Also, I didn’t have any shoes on.

It was an appalling place to work. Turning up every day felt like a compromise in integrity, which sort of worked in my favour because it made risking financial instability attractive. So I quit in favour of pursuing a career in art full time.

The best thing about being an artist is the fact that you can choose which vaginas you get familiar with. Nobody does it for you

CAn yOU TELL US AbOUT FROnT COVER?

CAnDICE Just recently I’ve been entertaining myself with house-on-the-hill imagery; I keep thinking about that shot from Edward Scissorhands - the one that shows the inventor’s house in Peg’s wing mirror. I like the aesthetic and atmosphere of a dark old place being built as close to the sky as possible. The cover came about in a bit of a backwards manner, for a while I’ve had the setting in mind but nobody to attach it to.

I liked the idea of a skull boy who got so caught up in the day that he lost his brain. Of all the things you could possibly lose, your mind would probably have the biggest knock-on effect to what your mom might say when you turn up without it- supposing you can find her, if you can recall who is she or that she exists at all.

It reminds me of those lose-lose scenarios children find themselves in; to get in trouble for going home late vs. getting in trouble for showing up without your belongings.

WHO IS THE mOST InTERESTIng pERSOn yOU’VE WORkED WITH?

CAnDICE Immediately, the person who comes to mind isn’t someone I’ve collaborated with, but he’s a collector who has become a friend. A few years ago he commissioned several small paintings of characters from his favourite Kubrick films. It’s a long-term on-going project, so we maintain on-and-off contact.

His interests are interesting and his job is interesting and I suspect him of being the most intelligent person I know. He’s Dr Ben Swift, a forensic pathologist who welcomes questions and happily answers everything you throw at him. His garden is sometimes overrun with peacocks (“pests!”) he has a fascinating collection of animal skulls, is an occasional taxidermist and can do incredibly neat cross-stitch.

I once asked him if maggots ever complicate his job and this was his answer:

“I shall tell you some fun stuff about maggots. They are wonderful recyclers and can be very useful forensically. Firstly, the newly hatched larva have very weak jaws and cannot chew through skin, so the adult lays its’ eggs either on softer linings of the body (the eyelids, nose, mouth, anus or genitals (if exposed)) or on open wounds. So, if you find a large maggot activity on

the wrists or hands you should look for cuts to the skin: they act as pointers to possible wounding’s. They are also well designed to feast, especially in a big maggot mass: as a maggot is trying to feed constantly, it doesn’t really want to keep “coming up for air”. So the spiracles (breathing tubes) are located around its’ bum. So, the bum goes up in the air and the head down and it can chew away happily for hours.

They form three larval stages (first, second and third instars) and, depending on the environmental temperature and species of fly, can give you an indication of the time since death depending on the age of maggots. When the third instar stage is reached and the maggot is ready to pupate, it will crawl away from the corpse (giving others a chance to feast) and find a dark place to turn into an adult. So, you usually find older maggots crawling up walls or trees, or burrowing into the soil around a body. As the body is consumed and the remains dry out (like jerky), you get different types of flies, such as the Cheese Skipper which ordinarily feeds on dried hams and cheeses, and beetles. Spiders then feast on those species. So you get a whole little environment going on around a body…not to mention large animals that will chew, which I’m afraid includes cats and dogs in a domestic environment, or foxes, rodents and birds outside.

So, a body is picked up and put in a body bag and it usually holds together fine. If it doesn’t the parts still get transported in a single body bag. Many of the maggots hide in the clothing, as they don’t like sunlight much, so they often pour out at the mortuary when you undress the body…then you find them crawling up your leg and getting in your wellies!

Maggots can also be useful if you have little corpse left as you can scoop up a few handfuls and send them to the lab for toxicology tests: obviously a maggot wouldn’t normally have

drugs or medications in them, so if you test them (by liquidizing them) for such you might identify if someone took an overdose. All in all, maggots are helpful, but we do end up washing a large number down the drains! On the down side, they can obliterate a body in days and ruin trace evidence, such as DNA, on the skin so not always helpful”

I suppose I haven’t worked ‘with’ him, but I’d like to one day. I think we could put together a horrible/great illustrated book.

WHAT DO yOU LOVE mOST AbOUT nEWCASTLE?

CAnDICE Probably the people. This goes way beyond “I love my friends”: I find the people here to be genuinely warm and

pleasant. I have never met nicer people in such a high concentration as I have in the North East. There also seems to be a region-wide sense of humour and as an ‘outsider’, it feels like people put having fun above any personal agenda, which is admirable - no matter how much vomit is spilled in the process.

I also love a harsh winter.

(just quickly: why do people always choose to have their seizures and falls outside M&S on Northumberland Street?) l

Communion proves it’s good for the soul as Mumford and Sons member Ben Lovett’s independent music platform visits The Cluny with a new club night. Since its humble beginnings from a West London basement bar, Communion has branched out across the UK to Brighton, Bristol, Leeds, York, Oxford, Dublin and Belfast and now, Newcastle.

Norwegian singer songwriter Thomas Dybdahl, hauntingly atmospheric band Big Sixes, alt-pop four-piece Lisbon and charismatic performer This Little Bird will take to the stage on March 21st for a club night which promises to be unique to Newcastle.

Founded in 2006 at London’s Notting Hill Arts Club by Ben Lovett, Kevin Jones (Bear’s Den) and acclaimed producer Ian Grimble, Communion quickly grew into a flourishing community of musicians and fans alike, providing a first independent platform for the freshest young artists on London’s circuit and beyond.

The monthly London event has seen the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, JJ Pistolet and Peggy Sue all grace the stage from the very start of their fledgling careers. It has also helped spawn the first steps for a diverse range of artists from Kurran and the Wolfnotes to Alan Pownall, The Holloways to King Charles, and Example to Josh Weller, all in

keeping with the eclectic ethos that Communion has come to stand for. Communion doesn’t just provide club nights. Taking the blueprint of what made Communion work so well, Communion Records was founded in September 2009 priding itself on creating a close working family in which to allow artists to develop at their own pace. Production on most releases is handled by Ben, Kevin and Ian themselves, involving other artists from the roster in the recording process for that community vibe.

In 2012, Communion Records released New Faces, a compilation album featuring songs from the likes of Michael Kiwanuka, Daughter and Ben Howard.

The inaugural New Faces Tour follows on from the influential New Faces compilation album and features four of the most hotly tipped new artists for 2014. Luke Sital-Singh, Eliza and The Bear, Farewell JR and Annie Eve will be playing in ten cities over two weeks playing intimate venues including The Cluny, Newcastle, on March 3rd.

Continuing to evolve out of the sometimes faceless vacuum of the music industry for honest, independent champions of good music, Communion endeavours to fill that gap and push the boundaries of music l

What seemed like a usual cold night in Newcastle was completely transformed by BalletLORENT. Upon entering the ballroom, you were no longer in Newcastle but, perhaps, a 30’s cabaret bar, as smoke and chatter filled the air against a backdrop of smooth jazz. That was, until the lights dimmed, the first dancer took to the floor. Everyone was silent in anticipation. Slowly more and more dancers filled the floor. The first costumes seemed to be a silent nod to some of fashions more out there designers like Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh, the head pieces however would have made Isabella Blow blush! The Night Ball was so much more than a ball; it was a journey through decades and across countries. One of the most memorable journeys was early 20’s French Riviera moving across to 50’s Vienna, with a quick stop in 90’s Ibiza thanks to Corona’s Rhythm of the Night. At one point, they entered Russia, when the Cossack dancing began all the girls faded away leaving two of the males slow dancing together, a beautiful middle finger to the current controversies Russia has brought to the world. From beginning to end it was a visual masterpiece of colour, shapes and metres and metres of tulle, these shapes helped by the guys in caped trousers. It was an incredible, inspiring masterpiece and I’m so glad to have been there to see it first-hand l

From Givenchy, Mr. John, Dior, Cecil Beaton and Balenciaga, Hepburn inspired loyalty, set trends and cemented reputations. Creating a hat for Hepburn was to stake your claim in fashion history. At the top of the list was Hubert Givenchy, one of the world’s great designers. Audrey became his muse and their association and friendship lasted a lifetime.

Worldwide, women loved Audrey Hepburn. They avidly copied her look from countless glossy magazine covers and from her movies. They wanted to emulate her sense of style and wit, her make-up, hair and her timeless elegance and of course, they adored her fabulous collection of hats.

This exquisite volume from Reel Art Press features stunning photographs of Audrey Hepburn taken by leading photographers including Dennis Stock, Howell Conant, Terry O’Neill, Bud Fraker and Bob Willoughby, and the book features insightful accompanying text from fashion writer, June Marsh.

Insanity, Tabata, P90X – call it what you will, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT for short) is one of the hottest fitness trends for 2014.

HIIT consists of short, intense bursts of exercise with either active recovery (such as less intense exercise) or complete rest in between and is, without question, one of the most effective and efficient ways to burn fat and boost aerobic capacity.

The benefits are obvious - quick results in a small amount of time and minimal, if any, equipment is needed as only your body weight is needed as resistance.

Dominic Bowser, head personal trainer at Sound Mind and Body gym and lifestyle centre in Benton, explains the science behind HIIT: “Short bursts of maximal effort (less than approx 40 seconds) utilise an energy system that uses the energy stored in the muscle.

“Although no fat is used during the exercise, it is used over a longer period than it would be after performing endurance exercise in order to repair the body and so is burnt quicker resulting in weight loss and toning. Intense exercise stimulates production of growth hormone, which helps to increase your metabolism and helps to promote fat burning up to 24 hours after you train.

“As the bursts of exercise are short and intense, it helps prevent muscle being broken down to provide energy for prolonged exercise so you don’t lose muscle mass – rather you’re maintaining and improving it.

“There is, however, a note that most people miss - the maximal effort has to be exactly that, your maximal effort and not just strenuous. Most people will stop because it is too hard and too uncomfortable and therefore do not get the desired results. You must also have a good diet to support this additional metabolic burn.

“As with any exercise, make sure you speak to a professional before embarking on any HIIT fitness training in order to get the correct advice, avoid injury and maximise your chances of getting the best results. Most importantly, listen to your body: if you are injured or not well, do not proceed with HIIT l

“quick results in a small amount of time and minimal, if any, equipment is needed”

You can use HIIT training with most types of exercise and can get a super effective workout in 20 minutes or less—even in as few as 4 minutes if you do Tabata-style training (20 seconds hard, 10 seconds easy).

A great starter workout is running as fast as you can for 1 minute and then walking for 2 minutes. Repeat that 3-minute interval five times for a 15-minute fat-blasting workout. It certainly works for Mr Bolt!

For more HIIT exercise inspiration, why not try:

l Impactful exercise with weights such as Olympic lifts, clean and press and snatch high pulls

l Explosive press ups and pull ups

l The exercise bike is probably the safest equipment to use with the lowest risk of injury if performed properly.

“Gambling Addiction” it’s all over the news, the government have launched all sorts of caps on how much you can gamble at any one time etc. Maureen Bowman however has different ideas on how to stop and stop for good, Maureen has successfully given treatment to many people to help them to stop their compulsive gambling. Often considered to be no more than a bad habit, the compulsive gambler's 'bad habit' will often have devastating effects upon their life and that of their family and friends. Not to mention their bank balance.

The way we help you to stop compulsive gambling is to teach you literally HOW to control your thinking so that you stop compulsive gambling, stop finding yourself walking into that betting shop or logging on to that on-line casino, or picking up that telephone to the bookmaker By using hypnosis, Maureen can help you to feel more comfortable and confident within yourself, by helping you kick the gambling habit.

People gain more confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth. This particular addiction often responds rapidly to this kind of approach. The average number of hour-long sessions required for the treatment of gambling addiction is 2 - 4, although you can often get positive and useful change from just one session l

I think that after twenty two yes XXII years its safe to say that force behind one of the North Easts biggest ever club nights have just about nailed it, my first experience of this iconic club night was in fact at the Riverside, perhaps nineteen years ago?

Riverside, The Quayside, Digital, Hoults Yard, I think we can safely say that we have put in more hours on Shindigs hallowed dance floors than at any other event in the North East, We have been Housed Technoed and twisted in to all kinds of weird shapes and till all hours and we love doing it.

This time though Shindig have surpassed even themselves, this is the BIG one, Bank Holiday May 4th 2014!

The advice for this gigantic event “leave your morals at home’?

You may have to!

By day we are back at the Quayside at Spillers Wharf for the German born Sven Vath, thirty two years a DJ/producer & electronic music genius. Jamie Jones the East Londoner who

has been credited with the sound that has paved the way for warmer, deeper more melodic Techno.

MK, Hot Since 82, Nina Kraviz, The Martinez Brothers, Caz ‘N Dogz, Guti (live) wAFF, Cristoph, AND our local legends Scott Bradford, Mark Lowry, Neil Bainbridge plus our very own LOOP DJs.

By night 001/W34 Hoults Yard on Walker road “The Germans are coming” Loco Dice, and yet more German genius from a personal favourite of mine Rober Dietz.

By night 002/ The Cut Nicholas Street: Sante & Sidney Charles back to back followed by Steven Dunn.

Yep! the music is over the City this bank holiday, my advice? start taking your vitamins NOW, you’re going to need them l

yOUR bIO SAyS yOU HAVE TEn yEARS’ ExpERIEnCE, WHAT FIRST mADE yOU WAnT TO gET InTO mUSIC?

FELIx When I was a child, my mam used to teach aerobics and took me along, I’d sit and listen to the mix tapes and dance music she used, that exposed me to dance music really early on, then I got my first set of technics, and was working as a glass collector in a club, it and it all sort of started from there. After work we would all sit around having a drink. I started messing around and learned how to use the decks, I loved it, soon after I got offered a job and I have never looked back.

WHAT WAS yOUR WORST EVER gIg?

FELIx Everyone has good gigs and bad gigs, I’m always learning new things, and I can’t name a definite bad gig but I’ve learned to make the best out of a bad situation and turn it around, even if there’s only 600/700 people, I can still get new fans

DO yOU STILL USE VInyL AT ALL OR IS IT A mIx OF VInyL AnD LApTOp?

FELIx I started using vinyl, I think we all did, and I used to sell vinyl at a shop, but I haven’t used it in a while. When I used to play Tokyo in Newcastle and carry 4 bags of vinyl; it taught me a lot, and gave me backache! I love technology, trying out new things and challenging myself. iTunes is a great tool and makes buying music a lot easier it let’s you look at all kinds of music too. Technology is great I enjoy using it to enhance what I do, making gigs bigger and better, I still have walls of vinyl back at home though and I miss the communal feeling of going to record shops, especailly the social aspect of talking about new music. I don’t miss carrying it around though.

WHO InSpIRED yOU In THE bEgInnIng?

FELIx I moved to London for university and acts like Paul Jackson and Ministry of Sound and DJ’s playing the big clubs at the time. The whole house music scene, acts like Armand van Helden and Fatboy Slim and the whole house music movement which is still going strong today.

CAn yOU pLAy Any mUSICAL InSTRUmEnTS?

FELIx Badly. Saxophone and took piano lessons when I was younger, a lot of producers don’t play live music, it’s all created digitally.

WHAT’S THE FARTHEST yOU’VE TRAVELLED FOR A gIg?

FELIx All across Europe to places like Germany and Ibiza, the furthest I’ve travelled would be Thailand; I knew people over there and played on some of the smaller islands too for beach parties, it’s great to play somewhere warm instead of going to work in the rain all the time! Had some great adventures in Northern Ireland and Scotland, you don’t have to travel miles to have a great time, the Scottish and the Irish know how to party and its great going to other cities and getting other peoples take on the music.

WHAT’S nExT FOR 2014?

FELIx I’m playing Northern Lights festival with a lot of local acts, which is exciting. There’s a lot more Electriqa to come at Digital, it’s a huge year this year with gigs and festivals and new music although I can’t give too much away!

FInALLy, IS THE nORTH EAST THE bEST CROWD?

FELIx Of course always! and Digital is one of the best clubs I’ve ever played, there’s a mix of work hard, play hard people, and students which makes it really unique. The Newcastle night life is phenomenal cos its all really compact, whether you get off a bus or the train you’re right in the middle of it all, in other cities you need to take a taxi to go from club to club. We have none of that here; it’s like a little, big city, if you know what I mean!

Big DJ’s like Gate Crashers and Ministry of Sound come to play at Digital and many of them are of the opinion that Newcastle is up there with the best nights out anywhere. The North East just has an amazing atmosphere and its always looking after and supporting its own artists. People are always messaging me with congratulations and support from my local area it’s amazing! And if any of my supporters are reading this, Thanks you lot , See you in Times Square l

new entertainment concept in the shape of an immersive and bespoke pop up cinema event curated and produced by Screenage Kicks, who aim to host a wide range of interesting and quirky film events in unusual spaces throughout the North East. They chose to launch with two screenings of the cult classic ‘The Big Lebowski’ and fittingly hosted the screenings at Newcastle’s newest concept bar restaurant, the boutique bowling alley Lane7. Since most of ‘The Big Lebowski’ takes place in a bowling alley the marriage of Screenage Kicks and Lane7 was perfect. Lane 7’s attention to detail, already makes the space feel like a very cool movie set from some imaginary American cult movie.

Tickets for both of the Screenage Kicks events sold out in a matter of days and the buzz continued on the evening of the screenings.

Characters from the film,The Nihilists, Jesus, The Gutterball Dancing Girls, and The Cowboy Stranger awaited the arrival of the paying public outside meeting and greeting them with choice dialogue from the movie. Inside the crowd had their photos taken with movie props whilst queuing for themed food and drink, such as Dude Dogs, Walter Burgers and White Russian cocktails.

The band for the event, “The Dudes” each member dressed in dressing gown, flip flops and beards dripping with White Russian - just as Jeff Bridges iconic character “The Dude” did. After walking through the crowd and unfurling the Dudes infamous “rug” (on which they invited the crowd to dance) they proceeded to blast though a high voltage set of hits from the soundtrack including Booker T and

Revival, lifting the roof off the venue before the film had even started.

The film: was screened and seated on the actual bowling lanes themselves, where on the second night it was preceded by a fifteen minute tribute to recently deceased ‘Lebowski’ star, Philip Seymour Hoffman and included a series of clips from his finest roles. After a moving ovation the tribute was over and ‘The Big Lebowski’ was screened.

The screening was broken up with an interval featuring a raffle with ‘Lebowski’ themed prizes. Throughout the screening viewers were treated to reenacted scenes from the film, characters took to the stage and mingled with the crowd, the highlight being when a female dance troupe took to the stage in full impressive ‘Gutterball’ costume to trip the light fantastic in time with their on screen counterparts.

After the film the ‘Dudes’ took to the stage again for the climax of the evening a roaring rendition of soundtrack highlight ‘What Condition my Condition Was In’ after which the room erupted into full party mode as revelers sung and danced along to party starters such as ‘Viva Las Vegas’. After a great night of entertainment the crowd were left to complete the evening with free bowling and free pool. Finally as excited happy movie lovers left all talk was of what could Screenage Kicks come up with next l

Insider info: their next party will be a screening of ‘Reservoir Dogs’ at the Stephenson Boilershop. www. screenagekicks.co.uk

To the Manor Born, Hardwick Hall Sedgefield, What is there really left to say about a night that has survived for so long? Plenty! I guess its like Christmas for the grown ups, or more to the point, the Peter Pan’s.

When you have a night where, the Main Room features, Sandy Rivera. Graeme Park and our very own home boy, Ian Blevins, a Soul Room with Jonathan & Deano, and amazing residents, the unbelievably talented Michael Johnson, Pete Wharrier and Rob Oxley, not only are you spoiled for choice, but you would have to be tone deaf not to enjoy one of, if not all the music, if you like to dance you’re going to love this.

Soulful tunes, house, deep, funky, techy there was something for everyone. With the odd massive classic thrown in.

The clientele hasn’t changed to much over the years and if you thought that perhaps with a name like “To the Manor Born” the night might be a little pretentious you would be wrong, Of course it could be said that I’m a little biased because to me it’s like going home. More of a gathering of the clans where I often bump in to someone I haven’t seen since the last Boxing Day gig.

There are way to many nights now, full of twenty something’s, this is not one of them, the majority of the ‘clan’ have well and truly earned their clubbing/ dance music stripes. Personally on the night (yet again) I was glued to the resident’s sets and I’m not the only one, guys I keep missing everything else, STOP IT ……… no don’t not really!

The events creator John Adamson rarely puts a foot wrong when putting together an event, he has been solely responsible for some of the best parties of my life, but if like me you cant wait until Boxing Day 2014, watch this space! And check out what the resident crew are up to at Groovebox, lately held at l
