The last thing you want is to be overwhelmed and stressed by too many choices. This issue is full of tips and advice, beautiful bold colors and modern style—it’s a great place to begin your wedding planning journey without the hassle of diving in blind.
First, narrow down your style. You’ll be building your wedding around it, so you’ll want to stay consistent when you’re talking to vendors. Our Style Profiles start on page 34 and showcase some of this year’s hottest colors and themes, courtesy of some of our favorite vendors. From retro chic to moody boho, you’re sure to find something you’ll love among these pages.
Next, build your dream team. It’s important to have a team of industry professionals you can trust to make your wedding dreams a reality without the stress of having to do it all yourself. Unique to The Celebration Society, our Venue and Vendor Guides (pages 47 and 103) showcase Chicagoland pros and all they have to offer side-by-side for you to compare.
Don’t forget to have fun during the planning process! Dress shopping can be daunting—try adding a few fun elements, like mimosas or post-shopping dinner, and make it a day out with a few special people. Our bridal gown feature (page 111) was shot on-location at Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park, which served as an absolutely romantic setting for this year’s stunning fashion. From delicate lace ballgowns to sleek beaded sheaths, there’s just so much WOW in this feature!
Selecting your invitations, flowers and cake can be so exciting! We’re seeing more and more deep hues and vibrant accents popping up in the wedding world. Pinterest and Instagram are loaded with black cakes and bold bouquets. We’re so in love with the amazing details in this year’s gallery! Take a look (page 136) and get ready to be inspired.
Wedding planning is a long process, but it’s worth it the effort! See real couples and their happily-everafters starting on page 151, along with words of wisdom from a recent bride on page 184. We hope this issue inspires you and serves as the perfect guide for your perfect day.

Many brides are surprised that most vendors insist on knowing their budget before providing a detailed proposal. Truth is, this saves you both time and prevents miscommunication, sticker shock and getting attached to an idea you just can’t afford.
Because you’re a busy bride with limited spare time, you’ll want this process to be as efficient as possible. Also, the vendors you’re interviewing respect your time and aim to make the proposal process as simple and straightforward as possible. With knowledge of your budget, each vendor will be able to provide a proposal in the price range you have specified.
A proposal with no budget guideline has several dangers. The first one is sticker shock. Many brides are truly shocked by the cost of wedding elements. Being surprised by your proposal price is not only unpleasant, but it may cause you to eliminate a wedding vendor from consideration who is truly capable of supplying a fantastic alternative for half the price—they just had no idea how much you wanted to spend!
Beyond the sticker shock, there’s another danger: attachment! You’re likely to become attached to all of the beautiful options conjured up in that initial proposal—and they’re way out of your price range. This will only create disappointment down the road as you find it impossible to be satisfied with more budget friendly alternatives.
Your style, taste, and personal preferences are equally as important as your budget. But, if you start out with a proposal that’s above your budget, trimming it down will be the only solution. That will mean parting with some elements you may love, and it also will delay arriving at your “budget happy place” while your salesperson revises your proposal. To avoid this dilemma, simply share your budget with vendors in your first conversation.
There’s a possibility that your vision and budget aren’t a match for a particular vendor, and that’s okay! If they aren’t able to offer the service or product you’re looking for within the amount you’re willing to pay, don’t be shy about telling them your budget is firm and you’ll have to look elsewhere.
If you consult several reputable vendors and continue to hear your vision can’t be accomplished within the amount you want to pay, it’s probably an indication your budget isn’t reasonable. Consider shifting money from another category within your overall budget, or open your mind to more budget friendly options that still allow you to have a great event.
Great vendors will do their best to offer an alternative to suit your budget, whether it’s a fabulous short rib small plate station instead of filet mignon, or ranunculus for your bouquet instead of peonies.
Occasionally, brides can get stuck in what is referred to as 'proposal la-la land.' This is what happens when you continue to swoon over Pinterest pictures and celebrity weddings featuring ideas far outside your budget range. Remember, the goal is to arrive at a proposal you’re happy with and can afford.
Some couples say they don’t feel comfortable sharing their actual budget with vendors they’re interviewing, for fear that they will "use up all the money,” and I want to offer some insight on that topic. Any vendor you’re considering hiring should make you feel comfortable and cared for as a customer. If at any point you feel pressured in a used-carsalesman-fashion, you’re in the wrong place. When it comes to budget, remember: you’re in charge. Your florist or caterer isn’t going to reach into your wallet and take your money. When you agree on a price, make sure you’re comfortable with the amount you’re spending.
You’ll make your planning process easier, avoid disappointment and sticker shock and develop a great relationship with your vendor team by sharing your budget from the beginning.

Start with your Budget and Style
In Chicago, the average cost of a 150-person wedding is approximately $42,000 with downtown weddings costing more ($51,000) and suburban weddings costing less ($33,000). When you start planning your wedding, one of the very first things you’ll need to create is a budget. The most helpful approach for you, your partner, and your respective families will be to openly discuss how much everyone will be able to contribute. Today, it is not uncommon for the bride and groom to foot the entire bill, or for the families to share the expenses. When discussing your expenses with your loved ones, be sure to remain courteous and realistic.

Before you go all Pinterest crazy and the little green monster inside of you starts to take over, we want to give you a bit of guidance to make sure that during your wedding planning process, you stay true to you. We know on a regular basis we are plagued with an overwhelming urge to keep up with the Joneses and it can be especially difficult to fend off that urge when it comes to your wedding. Here, we’ve compiled some basic tips to help you identify your true style as a couple and arm you with the know-how you’ll need to pull it all together.
Ultimately, you know deep down inside what's truly important to you. Just know this: your wedding is the first big event you will host together as a couple so it's the first time to let your personalities truly shine in front of friends and family. Whatever your source of inspiration, make decisions that feel right to you, not what you've seen other couples do.
Everyone has a hobby, activity, cause or pledge they fully support and this may be just the place to draw inspiration from. Show off your priorities in life to your guests by finding inspiration from what your true passions are.
Your venue will have a great deal of impact on the environment of your wedding. If you opt for a barn, you'll likely want to go for a more rustic feel. Or, if you book the most prestigious hotel in town, a glamorous wedding for you it is! Don't overlook your biggest expense in the wedding as a possible source for your overall theme too.
Are you a morning person or night owl? Whatever your preference, the time of day you ultimately choose to host your wedding ceremony and reception will affect the feel of the event. If you and your fiance are up and at 'em each day with a morning coffee, a brunch wedding just might be the thing for you. The possibilities are endless!
Inspiration abounds from a myriad of places and a muse might be just the thing you center your wedding style around. Your favorite movie, color, flower, character, season or destination. Pick something near and dear to you and let it guide all of your style decisions.
When you put together your guest list you'll either be looking at a large event or intimate gathering. The amount of people you choose to invite will affect the environment so when looking for sources of inspiration, remember how big or intimate the event will feel with the amount of friends and family in attendance and work off of that.
Be considerate of family traditions and wants but don't feel chained to them.
Be authentic to YOUR true style.
Create a budget, fine tune it and stick to it.
Edit. Edit. Edit. Start with a big picture and bring it into focus from there.
Manage the guest list... Don’t feel obligated to invite everyone. This will help your budget too.
Do you and the future hubs have a common interest that brought you together? Flying, skydiving, traveling or food? Whatever it is you spend your free time doing, consider letting it be the source of your wedding style. Golf anyone?
If you're a Great Gatsby girl at heart, a formal setting just might be the style for you. But, if a laid back casual setting is for you, so be it. Consider your personal preferences on dressing down or up when identifying the style wedding you want.
Do you hail from a great land afar or find yourself among a long lineage of great folks? Then let your family history and heritage guide the style of your wedding and enjoy reminiscing with your parents and loved ones about your roots.
The time of the year could greatly affect the overall style of your wedding. Temperature and foliage are great places to find inspiration and build your wedding style around.
Don't spend too much energy focusing on what others are doing.
Don't let the party details outshine the magic of your marriage.
Don't skimp on wedding vendors. Trust us... you get what you pay for.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
Branding might be a term you've only thought to be relevant to marketing departments. When it comes to modern day weddings, branding on a personal level takes company logos and color combinations and transforms them into monograms, slogans and themes.
Monograms, color preferences, favorite fonts and even paper weights are the essential tools-of-the-trade wedding stationers and designers use to make your personal style shine through to family and friends.
If you want to create a custom wedding brand, your stationer is the go-to creative guru to turn to. They are the graphic designers behind all the great typography and scroll work you see in wedding magazines and blogs.
Here are several places we recommend you use your personal wedding brand...

I was impressed with the beautiful scenery, flowers, hats, jockeys’ uniforms, rustic box seats and a horse named Eternal Circle and thought how wonderful this would be for a photo shoot. We focused on the horse jump backdrop, soft colors and flowing drapes creating a dreamy romantic and elegant ceremony. Deep vibrant colors, mercury glasses, candlesticks, mirror, mint julep glasses and the circle of ‘enteral life’ completed the reception look.

A Vetted Resource of the Most Reputable Special Event Locations Across Chicagoland.
Our Venue Guide is all about finding the right location for your wedding. After all, it all starts with your venue. There are appropriate facilities for parties of all sizes, but when you’re choosing the perfect spot for your next event, all of those options can be overwhelming. The size of the crowd will narrow your choices, but then there are still numerous types of venues to consider.
Whatever your particular tastes, when the time comes to choose your wedding location, know what to look for in a venue before you book.
See more details from the wedding featured here on page 172.
So, exactly what type of occasion do you envision for your upcoming wedding? Knowing this will ease your venue search because the setting affects the overall style tremendously. Not to mention the budget! In Chicagoland, the options for brides are limitless. From country clubs to hotels, city clubs, resorts, barns, private mansions and everything in between... you’ve got options.
HOW MANY HOURS DOES MY RENTAL FEE INCLUDE? ARE THERE OVERTIME CHARGES?
Some venues charge by the hour for use of their facility. Knowing exactly how many hours are included, and allotting plenty of time for set up and tear down is important.
HOW DO YOU CHARGE? PER PERSON, BY THE HOUR OR FLAT FEE?
It’s always good to know how your venue charges for rental. It's likely facilities that include catering will charge a per person rate and venues without catering will charge a flat fee or hourly rental.
CAN I BRING IN MY OWN VENDORS OR DO I HAVE TO USE A PREFERRED VENDOR LIST SUPPLIED BY THE VENUE?
Many venues will supply you with a list of their preferred wedding vendors to use. This can be helpful to the bride who needs direction and referrals but also a hindrance for brides who know exactly which vendors they'd like to use. Clarify with your venue whether it's required or not to use their specified vendors before you book.
CAN I BRING IN MY OWN ALCOHOL?
Venues that don't carry their own liquor license may allow brides to bring in their own alcohol. This is not typically the norm, but there are a few venues out there with this option. Remember, if you do opt to bring in your own alcohol, you'll want to hire a bar service to tend to guests.
IF NOT, IS THERE AN ALCOHOL MINIMUM?
Often venues with liquor licenses will have a bar minimum in addition to the cost of their venue rental. Best to have a heads up about this before you book for budgeting.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THE SPACE HOLD (NOT JUST OFFICIAL CAPACITY) ACCORDING TO MY ROOM SET UP?
Your room set up will greatly affect the amount of guests you can have at your wedding. Official capacities are for the fire marshal. You'll want to focus on how many guests you can fit into the room with a seated dinner, estate table, dance floor or buffet set up.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE VENUE RENTAL?
Most venues have house items that are included in the cost of their facility rental like dance floors, tables, chairs, standard linens, etc. But, there are several venues that don't offer this and could result in an additional cost to you. Ask before you book.
WHAT IS THE PARKING SITUATION?
Valet parking, limited options, street parking or ample complimentary parking for guests are all important things to consider.
WILL THERE BE OTHER WEDDINGS HAPPENING ON THE SAME DAY?
Depending on the size of the venue, it will be nice to know whether your event will be the only one happening on property or if there will be others. Other events may infringe on your time use of the venue or create confusion for guests so best to be prepared.
HOW MUCH ARE TAX AND GRATUITY? ARE THEY INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE PRICES?
Taxes and gratuity can vary greatly. Some venues include both in their package prices while others add it on. Be sure to consider this when you are planning your budget, as it can be well over 30% of your reception budget.
The thing about a wedding venue is... there are a lot of extras, options and upgrades and every single venue has a different package and procedure. So, to make sure you are comparing apples to apples, use this handy checklist when identifying the best venue for you.
The Emporium’s charming details include 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood walls, antique furniture, and splendid views. Our unique barn venue has a casually elegant ambiance, large dance floor, and is fully climate-controlled. Adjacent to the Emporium is a private brick patio with a monumental outdoor fireplace for you and your guests to retreat to during your celebration. Trees and paths surround The Emporium and attached parking lots, creating an ethereal setting for your reception. We believe in including everything you will need, without charging many a la carte fees. With its timeless gem of a spring-fed lake, the Lake Geneva area has been known as a vacation destination for more than a century. Although settlement began in the 1830s, it wasn’t until after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that massive estates began to materialize along the shores of Geneva Lake. Wealthy Chicagoans sent their families here, traveling back and forth by train, while their city homes were rebuilt.
Expansive summer homes were built for national names such as Wrigley, Selfridge and Drake, and many of these estates still stand today. The 20.2-mile public shore path is a top attraction, as you can walk around the entire lake for a front-row view of its historical mansions and modern-day estates. Or walk a portion of the path and enjoy a boat cruise back to your starting point through the Lake Geneva Cruise Line.
Sparkling and clean, Geneva Lake itself is ideal for boating, swimming and all sorts of watersports, from sailing and paddleboarding to wake-surfing and skiing. There are sailboats, vintage steam boats and even larger vessels available to rent for bridal showers, bachelor or bachelorette parties, rehearsal dinners or wedding receptions. And of course, there’s always the option of spending a lazy afternoon at the beach!
Nearby Delavan Lake has its own storied history as well, with five noteworthy homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright still standing on its shores. Boat tours are offered through Lake Lawn Resort for a cruise along the lake’s 11 miles of shoreline. It’s also a popular fishing lake, both in the summer and winter.
If you’d like to tie the knot on the water, the Riviera Ballroom is in the heart of Lake Geneva. Opened in 1932, the city-owned Riviera was a popular venue for some of the biggest names in music history, including Louis Armstrong. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and its restored second floor ballroom has an expansive view of the lake.
Expansive summer homes were built [here] for national names such as Wrigley, Selfridge and Drake, and many of these estates still stand today.
For bridal parties, the area is home to some of the finest resort spas, day spas and salons, offering a wide range of amenities for true relaxation. Some include everything from a fitness center to indoor pool, tennis courts, climbing wall, sauna and steam rooms. Spa services range from a massage for two to manicures, pedicures, body wraps and chemical peels.
For the bachelor, adventure awaits in the form of many award-winning golf courses, ranging in difficulty and terrain. There’s also a zip line tour through the Wisconsin woods, laser tag and paintball facilities nearby.
And for all of the family and friends arriving in Lake Geneva for your event, fresh restaurant options await. Throughout the downtown and surrounding area, guests will find plentiful choices ranging from intimate bistros with outdoor seating to fine dining at resorts and around the lake. And don’t forget the shopping! Lake Geneva’s downtown has dozens of boutiques and specialty shops. Browse for clothing, home furnishings, antique treasures or that unique piece of art—Lake Geneva has it all.
Just across Lake Michigan, a not-so-far-away destination offers stunning, picturesque scenery with the nation’s longest freshwater coastline, wildlife refuges and over 100 state parks. Combined with its rich automotive and arts history, Michigan is an ideal place for a romantic getaway, whether it’s a honeymoon, or everything from the bachelor party to the reception.
The state’s coastline offers scenic views, 129 lighthouses and numerous islands. Among these islands, situated in the waterway between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, is Mackinac Island. No automobiles are allowed in this Northern Michigan escape—visitors find their way around the island on bicycles or by carriage. The island’s quaint setting is the perfect backdrop for fairytale weddings. With just under 50 local wedding vendors, plenty of lodging, a variety of recreational activities and historic sites, and great shopping, Mackinac Island has everything you’ll need for a destination celebration. Before you leave, be sure to indulge in some of the island’s delicious (and famous!) fudge… or fill your wedding dessert table with it!
Not far away is Traverse City and the Grand Traverse region—home to several wineries, the National Cherry Festival and an assortment of wedding venues. Take advantage of the area’s natural beauty and exchange vows in a romantic vineyard or barefoot in the sand of nearby beaches. For a post-wedding adventure, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offers miles of hiking trails, impressive sand dunes and scenic views from towering bluffs. Or, take an exciting boating excursion on one of Traverse Tall Ship Company’s replica schooners.
Those in search of a more historical, urban setting should take a trip to Detroit. Known as The Motor City, Detroit is home to the first Ford automobile and The Henry Ford—an indoor/ outdoor museum named after its creator. Having one of the largest theater districts in the county, the city is also known for its rich arts history. Visitors can enjoy local museums and

attractions such as the Motown Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts, which holds Diego Rivera’s intriguing Detroit Industry Murals. Set aside time for shopping and a bite to eat at the Eastern Market—one of the country’s largest year-round markets. Just an hour away is the culinary hotspot of Ann Arbor, where you’ll find even more great shopping, arts and culture, and over 300 restaurants.
After the wedding, escape to the Upper Peninsula for an adventurous getaway. Take in the beauty of the region’s wildlife refuges, breathtaking waterfalls and endless acres of forest. Surround yourself with fresh air and

All this is waiting, just across the lake. From exciting nightlife and tourist attractions, to picturesque scenery and miles of shoreline, it’s easy to fall in love with all Michigan has to offer.
With sunny skies, a tropical breeze, and temperatures in the mid-80s year-round, it’s no wonder the slogan of Aruba is “One Happy Island.” It’s a perfect Caribbean destination for the most romantic weddings and honeymoons in every season: consistent weather, white sand beaches and Instagramworthy turquoise waters.
The tropical island is located in the southern Caribbean, just 15 miles north of Venezuela (in fact, on a clear day, you can see the coast of Venezuela from the southeastern coast of Aruba). The official languages are Dutch and Papiamento (the local tongue), but most natives also speak English and Spanish. This is a surprisingly easy island to travel to, with daily nonstop flights from many U.S. cities. And the U.S. dollar is commonly accepted throughout the country.
There are many options for getting married or honeymooning, from hotels to vacation rentals. At the adults-only Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino, guests can enjoy cocktails in an open-air lobby or alongside a peaceful pool with ocean views. Or they can take the water taxi to the Renaissance’s private island, where flamingos roam and there are two expansive beaches — one for families and one for adults only. Renaissance Island is a popular wedding site, with couples exchanging vows on a secluded beach. A boutique spa, casino and shopping round out the experiences for wedding guests.
For a romantic, intimate honeymoon, Bucuti & Tara is the top choice for many newlyweds. This AAA Four Diamond resort was designated the #1 Hotel for Romance in the Caribbean for 2018 by Trip Advisor. Only 104 private, adults-only guest rooms are available at this oceanfront resort, and all guests are guaranteed a beach chair just a few steps out of their room.
Bucuti & Tara’s Romance Concierge can help plan activities at the resort and around the island, such as a private dinner on the beach, couples massage, professional photography session, or a sunset sail.
Foodies will be impressed by the more than 250 restaurant options in Aruba. Virtually

every ethnic cuisine is represented, prices are reasonable, and there are some very unique experiences. For those who literally want to dip their toes in the water while enjoying a sunset dinner, the Flying Fishbone offers just that. Couples or groups can slip off their shoes and dine while the ocean waves lap gently onto the shore and under the tables. And at the Screaming Eagle, couples are served dinner… in bed. Lounge beds for two with ample pillows and cushions, soft lighting and gauzy privacy curtains are the ‘table’ of choice at this popular night spot.
During the day, Aruba’s waters are the main attraction for visitors. The southwest side of
the island boasts white sand beaches with beautiful, warm water. Visitors can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, fishing, or just lounging at the beach, cool drink in hand. For the more adventurous, couples can rent all-terrain vehicles, or take a hike or horseback ride across Aruba’s postcardperfect terrain. And of course there’s plenty of shopping around the island, from the casual island marketplace to high-end brands such as Ralph Lauren and Gucci.
Whether it’s a destination wedding or idyllic honeymoon, couples will never forget the happy island of Aruba.
Besides the setting, your wedding vendors will make the most impact on the success of your wedding day. The professional services they supply like wedding planning, coordination, entertainment, floral design, rentals and catering are the essential event elements no party could take place without. Their expertise orchestrate the senses you and your guests will experience throughout the day, so finding the very best companies to execute your style is of utmost importance.
That’s where we come in. The Celebration Society is connected to the most reputable wedding vendors across Chicago. We have a personal relationship with almost all of the vendors represented in this book. Seek their expertise and soak it up.
You’ll be a better hostess because of it.

The proposal was everything you dreamed it would be. You’re rocking the diamond ring. You’ve called your mom. Now what? Now you begin to put your vendor team together. Here’s how (and when!) to find the people that will move heaven and earth to make sure your day is perfect.
Plan on hiring a full-service planner at least 12 months from your wedding day. You should choose your wedding planner first to reserve your date on their calendar and have their guidance during the entire wedding planning process. From the beginning to the end, your wedding planner will be your experienced counsel for every vendor interview, contract, and scheduling question.
How do you charge? Per hour, lump sum, percentage of total budget?
Are there specific vendors you like to use?
What is the process of selecting and hiring vendors?
Can I use other vendors?
What is the process of paying vendors? Is that done through you or direct to vendors?
Do you handle vendor services, contract and payment processing?
Do you handle guest list coordination and RSVPs?
What is your specialty?
How many meetings will we have together? In person, via phone?
How much does it cost? $
Full service wedding planners range in price from $5,000$7,000+, while monthof coordinators will likely charge between $2,000-$3,000 depending on the scope of work.
Venue and catering should be booked about 12 months from your wedding day. Book early to reserve your preferred wedding date as event venues will likely be booked for weddings up to a year in advance. Your budgeting will rely on whether or not catering is included in the pricing on your contract, so do your research. The style of your wedding venue will affect the overall style of your wedding. Whether you choose a glamorous ballroom or countryside barn—everything from your wedding dress, flowers to music selection will be affected.
. .
Do you specialize in specific food types?
How much does it cost? $
Catering costs are dependent on the menu, venue and set up, but for a starting point can run between $35-$110+ per person not including any alcohol, linen or decor upgrades.
Is a tasting included in your services?
Will you provide waitstaff? Is that extra?
If so, what is the ratio of staff to guest?
What will your staff wear?
How do you work with my wedding planner and venue?
Will you feed everyone, including band members and waitstaff? If so, what is their menu and cost per person?
Do you handle china, silverware and glassware rental?
What do you charge for cake cutting and serving?
Is tax and gratuity included?
How do you handle clean up and trash removal?
Plan on purchasing your wedding dress about 11 months from your wedding day. Once you decide on where you will get married and where the reception will be, it’s time to go dress shopping! Knowing your wedding location is just as important as knowing your dress size when it comes to shopping for a gown, so be sure to have a solid idea of your venue. Most bridal stores will need to place the order for your dress from the dress designer at least 10 months in advance, while custom creations could take even longer. Pick your bridal party and groomsmen attire now too.

Are appointments required to try on bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses?

How long will it take for my gown to arrive?

Wedding dresses are going to range enormously depending on designer, intricacy of details (like lace or beading), and how much of the gown is custom. An average dress, however, is going to hover anywhere from $2,000-$6,000.
Plan to book a photographer 11 months from your wedding date. Since photography businesses are most often run by a single person or small teams of creative professionals that work one wedding per day, it's important to book early. Be sure to take your venue into account when determining your preferred photography style. Digital photography thrives both indoors and out, and has a timeless look while light and airy film photography should be reserved for those celebrating their day outside, since it needs as much natural light as possible.
. . .
How much does it cost? $
Professional wedding photographers will likely charge between $3,000$6,000+ depending on experience level, demand, medium, and packages.
What is your primary style of photography? Traditional or documentary?
How independent is the photographer? Does he want to know all the shots you’d like or free reign to shoot all the moments of the day at will?
Will the photographer I book be the one to shoot my wedding?
How long after the wedding will the photos be ready?
What happens if the photographer is ill on the day of the wedding?
What are your backup procedures?
What is included in your pricing? Albums, hours of coverage, engagement session, etc.?
Plan on hiring a videographer about 10 months from your wedding date. More often than not, a videography business is run by a single person or a duo of creative professionals that work one wedding per day. Much of why you’ll hire them is based on loving their editing style, ability to capture details most important to you (like a first dance, or the ceremony itself) and loving their pricing even more, so once you find your match, make it official by signing the contract. With a film, you'll be able to relive your day with your future family and remember even the smallest details you and your vendor team worked so hard to create.
. . .
What is your cinematography style? Documentary, movie-like or artistic?
Have you worked with our photographer?
How does the crew stay unobtrusive during the ceremony and reception?

PRICE RANGE
Professional wedding videographers will likely charge between $2,400$5,000+ depending on experience level, demand and packages
Plan on choosing your floral designer about eight months from your wedding day. With such a length of time from your day, you have a good amount of time to get on the schedule for the best wedding florist in your area and brainstorm with them on what the vision of your wedding is. With the help of your planner, you and your floral designer can select a color palette, make note of blooms you love (or hate!) and lay out a proper budget for the arrangements you'll need created. Knowing what styles you like before going into a consultation means more time talking helpful specifics for you and your florist.
How much does it cost? $
Flower pricing is dependent on the amount of decor at your wedding. You’ll want to budget starting at $1,500 for the basics like bouquets and boutonnières, and know the sky is truly the limit for the rest.
What is your style?
What is your process?
Has the florist/designer worked at your venue before?
How do items get returned after the wedding? Will they pick up?
Does the designer offer rental items— vases, trellis, decor—or must they be supplied via a rental company?
Can my guests take centerpieces home?
Do you charge for mockup centerpieces before my wedding or is that included?
How can I stay within my budget without having small bouquets and arrangements?
Dahlias are my favorite kind of flower. Will they be in season for my wedding?
Plan on hiring your hair and makeup artist team about six to eight months from your wedding date. Chances are you are as thick as thieves with your hair dresser and have your cut and color pre-booked every time you leave the salon, and for good reason! But does your stylist do bridal updos? Many don’t. That's where on-site teams come in. Your beauty vendors will likely only be able to serve one full bridal party per Saturday. So book them sooner rather than later.
. . .
How far in advance should I book my appointment?
I’d like to book with my bridesmaids. Will you be able to accommodate all of us?
How much time should I allow for hair and makeup on my wedding day?
Is there an extra charge for airbrush makeup and/or false eyelashes?
How much should I expect to spend?
Is a down payment required to book an appointment?
Do you offer consultations and trials?
My hair is fairly thin. Do you offer hair extensions?
Do you offer onsite services? How far will you travel?
Can you accommodate sensitive skin?
Do you offer a touch-up kit or touch-up services?
much does it cost? $
On-site bridal hair will usually cost around $125 while full makeup application will average around $85. Bridesmaids and moms average around $85 for hair styling and $75 for makeup application. Trials and consultation for both typically run about $75.
Look into booking your stationer six to eight months in advance of your wedding date. If you would like to send out save the dates, you’ll want to choose your stationery designer eight months in advance. For invitations only, you should start to look at options six months out. Traditional etiquette states invitations should be mailed out at least eight weeks prior to the wedding day. Custom stationery processes will likely take around two to three months, since multiple consultations, proofing and printing time needs to be taken into account.
Do you design custom work or sell from invitation lines?
How much does it cost? $
Depending on the complexity of the invitation suites, you can expect to pay between $4 - $8+ per invite. Further customizations will increase your per piece price.
Do you help with branding or custom monograms?
Is there a specific style you specialize in?
Do you offer calligraphy or addressing services?
Can I purchase additional personalized items like Save-the Date, welcome bags, favor tags, etc.?
Will you supply a proof before the invitation is officially printed?
What happens if there is an error?
How long after I place the order will the invitations come in?
Can I customize the wording?
Can personal photos be added to your designs?
Plan to hire a baker six to eight months in advance. While a cake baker can serve multiple weddings in a weekend, chances are they can’t serve an endless amount. So we say get on the schedule in advance by signing the wedding cake contract. Again, it’s likely you’ll have your tasting a bit later in the process, but reserving your spot in their weekend schedule ahead of time will make sure you get the cake baker you like the best. Before your tasting, be sure to research what types of frostings and finishes do best in your style venue.

What is your average cost per slice?
Will you design a custom cake or do you have preset styles to choose from?
Is the cake stand provided by you? PRICE RANGE
Your wedding cake will likely cost approximately $4 - $8+ per slice depending on the complexity of the design, baker’s skill level and availability. How much does it cost? $

In the midst of all the fun that comes with wedding planning, a bride ought to know a thing or two about those serious contracts she’s signing on the dotted line.
Why do I have to pay a deposit to vendors like photographers, DJs, planners, etc?
To discuss a deposit, it also becomes a discussion about contracts—they go hand-inhand. The contract spells out the agreement (date, time and rate; and what you should expect from the vendor, what the vendor should expect from you) and the deposit is the force behind that agreement. The deposit allows the vendor to be confident in turning away other potential clients for the same date, and it allows the couple to feel confident their vendor will show up and perform their hired duties the day of the wedding.
“The deposit allows the vendor to be confident in turning away other potential clients for the same date, and it allows the bride to feel confident their vendor will show up.”
Is a standard practice of wedding vendors to require a deposit? Yes. If the vendor you are choosing to work with doesn’t require a contract and deposit, you should be concerned about what other things they are leaving out of their business (e.g. insurance, back-up equipment, or experience). If there isn’t a contract and deposit requirement, that is a red flag. Remember, a contract and deposit also protects the customer and adds peace of mind that a vendor will show up and do the job they are hired for.
How much money should I expect to put down for my deposit? This amount varies, but 50% is fairly standard.
Read over any contract you are signing, and ask the vendor you are working with to explain anything you are unclear about. Weddings don’t happen for a number of reasons—break-ups, family disagreements, weather issues, and sometimes the couple get so overwhelmed planning they run off to Vegas to elope. If you need to cancel, notify the vendor immediately and just be open to having a conversation about what your contract may entitle you to. Many contracts have the flexibility to deal with the various
reasons for cancellation. Sometimes if the vendor is able to book another client with a comparable package on the same day, the deposit or a portion is refundable no matter the reason.
What if I pay a deposit and the vendor has to cancel?
You should ask for your deposit to be promptly refunded.
What type of legal wording should I look for in a vendor contract specific to deposits? You should make sure what is and what is not refundable is clearly articulated. Some vendors who work with multiple clients in a day may
allow for a partial return of deposit, within a certain period of time before the event. Most photographers can’t do that because it’s much harder to fill the date, especially the closer you get to the event.
What if I cancel, and I feel like I deserve my deposit back? The terms should be clearly spelled out in the contract. Weddings (and planning them!) are emotional, but when dealing with vendors a customer should always keep in mind that they are working with business owners.
By Terry Smedley Q & A
Whether you prefer a towering six-tier confection or a simplistic couple’s cake, choose the dessert that’s best for your day.
Should I steer clear of any frostings or finishes if I’m hosting an outdoor reception?
If you are having an outdoor reception during the hot months, try to steer clear of buttercreams that contain ingredients that can’t take the heat like cream cheese.
What’s the key to making a naked-style cake wedding worthy?
Most people who select naked cakes do so not because of the look of the cake (although most do love the simplicity), but because they aren’t a fan of frosting. They love that they can have more cake, less frosting and with the addition of floral or some decorative elements have a beautiful cake that tastes good.
My future husband and I aren’t really fans of cake. Do we still need to have one? What are my other options?
Oh heavens no, there are no hard and fast rules! Dessert buffets are hot right now. They are a fabulous alternative to cake or to supplement cake for your guests. The benefit of a dessert buffet is your guests get a variety of choices for their desserts, and can be designed to coordinate with and complement your reception.
What information should I have ready for our cake consultations?
Do your homework! Before you book a consultation, ensure the company provides the type of cake you are looking for. A baker may specialize in old fashioned cakes or naked cakes, so don’t ask them to create a cake style they don’t generally offer. Be prepared to leave a photo of your inspiration cake with the baker after your consultation.
Cake toppers: are they a thing of the past?
Cake toppers are making a comeback, but not necessarily the traditional bride and groom. More often you may see custom laser cut toppers that express the sentiments of the couple, such as “To the Moon and Back” or “Mr. and Mrs.” or clever custom cake toppers showcasing the couple and their interests.
I love the look of real flowers on a cake. Are they really safe to include?
Many flowers are in fact edible. Check with your florist to ensure that whatever they are providing for your cake is safe and organic. While all flowers are a treat to see, some ought to come with a warning label. The most common poisonous wedding flowers include lily of the valley, hydrangeas, stargazer lilies, angels trumpet, oleander and delphinium. If your preferred florals appear on this list, fret not. Consider adding faux tiers to the cake. These tiers blend with the design of the rest of
the cake, often covered in identical fondant or completely in flowers.
What are the hot trends?
We’re seeing personalization of cakes. Taking on themes from hot TV shows, like Game of Thrones, to sports teams and comic book heroes. Flavor pairings are also trending. Creative options include Nutella, tequila and lime, orange and champagne, peaches and cream, caramel apple and almond amaretto just to name a few.
If there’s one gray area in the wedding world, it’s paying gratuities. Long-standing etiquette says ones thing and modern trend says another. We say: if you loved your service—show it with a tip.
By Meghan Bishop
Whether your vendor owns their business or is an hourly employee matters little. Gratuity says "I'm so thankful for the extra care you showed to me," and giving shouldn't be determined by who the boss is. It's determined by the quality of service. Here's a list of the vendors you should plan to tip because of their onsite expertise at the end of your very long, very fabulous big day.
Traditionally, it has been thought that you don't need to give your wedding planner anything for a tip. But, considering they're the one vendor who has done the bulk of the work on your wedding—we say, why not? Did he/she knock your socks off by pulling off your wedding flawlessly? Was there a ton of extra work involved that wasn’t discussed when pricing was set? Whatever the case may be, you can feel comfortable giving between $100 to 10% of their fees in cash or a gift in the same amount to show your gratitude.
TIP: $100 to 10% of fees
In our opinion, your photographer and videographer will be the most important vendors you choose. Each photographer on the day of your wedding should be tipped $100200, and second shooters $50-75.
TIP: $50-200 per person
Not sure what to give the string trio that played your wedding march? What about the choir that sang as you lit your unity candle? If it was a professional group, 10% of the entire amount charged to be split amongst the musicians. If it’s a civic or church group and they didn’t charge, give a donation either to the group or the church—just as you would a religious officiant.
TIP: 10% of fee to be split among musicians
TO REMEMBER WHEN TIPPING...
Every guest was on the dance floor and your party was non-stop all night! You should tip $25-50, per musician. For the DJ—he/she is the one person responsible for the entire flow and energy of your event. We think they deserve a whole lotta love for guaranteeing a good time.
MUSICIAN TIP: $25-50 per person
DJ TIP: $100-200
Your dad’s friend is a judge, your neighbor got registered online, your junior high school pastor, or your pastor now that you are an adult has accepted the job of conducting your service— etiquette says no cash should be given. Instead, give a thank you card and a gift card or a donation to the house of worship if affiliated.
TIP: A donation and thank you note will do
This varies depending on the region of the country you are in. In the Midwest, a 20 to 22% service charge is usually added to the catering contract. But if you are super happy with the service, you can give the catering manager a lump sum to distribute among the wait staff. You can get the anticipated number of wait staff from the caterer beforehand to help you prepare.
TIP: $20-50 per person (and check your contract)
Your bartender will deal with a bunch of guest
craziness the evening of your wedding (i.e. "There is tooooooo much coke in my Jack").
Bartenders who work on a catering staff team make a higher hourly wage than what you'd expect in a restaurant so you can tip them the same as the other catering staff. No need to go above and beyond, unless you really want to.
TIP: $20-50 like the other catering event staff
Your driver will wait outside for 30 minutes as you say your goodbyes to your friends and family and make sure your take-away plate is in the car for your midnight snack before he drives clear across town to your desired place! Proper tip is 15-20% presented after arrival.
TIP: 15-20% of fees
This one is optional. Rental drop off delivery people sometimes get $20-50 per person depending on how much they are bringing in and having to set up. Most of the time you have a team of 2-4 depending on the size of the order and they will be the last ones out of the space at the end of the night.
TIP: $20-50 per person
As important as pictures are, your hair and makeup professional will help ensure you look the best! Hair and make-up professionals should get 15-20% of the total bill.
TIP: 15-20% of services
Some vendors may have gratuity included in their contract–if this is the case, no tip is necessary. Read your contract to be certain. Also, if a vendor does not fulfill what was expected, don’t feel obligated. And if you want to reward a vendor that you didn’t get a chance to see or interact with, don’t underestimate the power of a sincere thank you card with a little token of your appreciation inside. Tipping is something you should be prepared to do (a lot of) on your wedding day. The caliber of the professionals you hire will determine the amount of tips you should budget for.

Elements at Water Street

Anastasia and Nick chose the beautiful Elements at Water Street in Naperville as the backdrop for their big day. The morning began with the wedding party getting ready, then meeting at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church for an afternoon ceremony. Anastasia fell in love with a strapless, all-over lace David Tutera gown from Bri’Zan Couture. Her bouquet was an assortment of ivory blooms and greenery. Her bridesmaids carried similar, smaller bouquets and wore neutral dresses with a metallic lace bodice. Nick and his groomsmen perfectly complemented the party in modern tuxedos—the groom in bold blue with black lapels and the others in navy.
The couple happily exchanged vows and made their way out of the church handin-hand as husband and wife. They shared a few moments alone together with hors d’oeuvres and champagne before joining their guests for an evening of celebration. A timeless, elegant white and gold reception awaited them. Tables were set with gold linen napkins, glowing votives and a variety of centerpieces, including crystal candelabras and short and tall floral arrangements. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal before the couple cut into a three-tier cake from De’Etta’s Bakery. Anastasia and Nick performed a choreographed dance to Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” then Sounds Abound kept the dance floor packed all night as everyone joined them in celebrating. Just days later, the newlyweds escaped to Italy for a 14-day honeymoon.
“Our photographer, Erin with Cinder and Vin, doubled as a day of coordinator and helped solve potential problems before I even caught wind of them! She kept me relaxed, checked what I needed throughout the day, and interacted so well with all the guests (all while capturing the most important day of our lives). She was a life saver!”

Jordan and Michael met on a cruise and have been inseparable ever since, so it only made sense to tie a nautical theme into their wedding! The Columbia Yacht Club seemed to be the perfect location for their intimate celebration, offering picturesque views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. Guests were greeted with a glass of champagne upon entering the evening ceremony. The couple chose to write their own vows and exchanged them in front of their closest friends and family before making a joyful exit.
The ceremony space was transformed into a beautiful reception with white chiavari chairs, striped navy linens, blue uplighting and white and green floral arrangements that sat atop tall clear vases. Guests received bottles of Zinfandel from Peju Winery as favors, along with a meaningful photo of themselves with the newlyweds. After dinner, the couple cut into a city-themed three-tier cake from Alliance Bakery, shared a memorable first dance, then danced the night away to music provided by Gary Hipperson of Sounds Abound Entertainment.
“We both did not want to wear tuxes and went for custom suits instead. The suits were from Surmesur, located in the Chicago Loop. We wanted similar looking, but not perfectly matching suits. Michael opted for a vest and bowtie, while I wanted a full length tie with suspenders. We also went with a fashionable touch and wore no show socks with our Montauk shoes, which Grant McNamara of The Wedding GPS, aided in the choosing of.”

Joy and Michael fell in love with the fairytale setting of The Monte Bello Estate—a venue that’s situated in the bride’s hometown of Lemont. The day began as overcast and rainy, but the sun mades its appearance just in time for their evening ceremony. Joy felt an abundance of love surrounding her and her soon-to-be husband as her father walked her down the aisle. She wore a heavenly A-line dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline and delicate lace details. Her bouquet was a gathering of white and blush blooms wrapped in an ivory ribbon. The bridesmaids’ matching bouquets perfectly complemented their dusty pink dresses and the groomsmen’s blush bow ties. Joy and Michael exchanged vows in front of an ornate gazebo, then cheerfully exited as husband and wife.
Guests enjoyed cocktail hour at an outdoor bar before heading into a dreamy reception. Ceremony flowers were repurposed as centerpieces and sat atop blush linens. Chandeliers hung from a draped ceiling, creating a romantic glow for that evening’s celebration. Dinner included Chicken Champagne with sautéed mushrooms and a light cream sauce and a salted caramel and vanilla cake. Joy and Michael shared a first dance, followed by a choreographed father-daughter dance that got everyone on their feet! The couple joyfully exited their reception through a tunnel of dazzling sparklers, looking forward to their honeymoon in Costa Rica.
“Our flowers were insanely beautiful –Little Shop on the Prairie in Lombard, IL did the most amazing job! The arrangements were shades of white, ivory, blush, dusty pink and various shades of green. They included hydrangeas, roses and spray roses, and various summertime greens, such as eucalyptus, jasmine vine and ruscus.”

Chris and Judy planned a large, traditional wedding filled with wow-factors! The day began with a traditional Greek ceremony. Judy wore a custom gown and veil from Bri’Zan Couture and carried a bouquet of white and pink blooms. Her bridesmaids, junior bridesmaids and flower girls dressed in delicate pink gowns with sparkling details. Chris and his groomsmen donned modern black tuxedoes with black bow ties and romantic rose boutonnières.
A breathtaking reception awaited them. The venue was filled with lush floral arrangements and gold details. They made their grand entrance and took their seats at two ornate gold chairs, which sat in front of a fabulous wall of flowers. Guest tables included gold chiavari chairs, luxury linens and custom menus. After dinner, the newlyweds cut into a magnificent seven-tier cake covered in pastel flowers, then shared a romantic first dance. The celebration continued into the evening with dancing and a variety of entertainment. Shortly after the wedding, the couple embarked on their honeymoon to St. Lucia.
“My bridal dress was a designer ball gown that was transformed and custommade by Bri’Zan Couture, and the veil was hand made and designed by Bri’Zan to match my gown. My bridal party wore a MacDuggal Designer ballgown. The bodice was sophisticated with an off the shoulder appeal. To bring in sparkle, we added a customized rose gold crystal belt to the waistline. My flower girl, junior flower girls and junior bridesmaids all wore custom Bri’Zan Couture dresses.”

Mary and Michael planned a beautiful waterfront wedding at Lake Lawn Resort in Lake Geneva—a place that Michael and his family frequented while he was growing up. The day was beautiful and breezy and began with photos of Mary with her bridesmaids and Michael and with his groomsmen. Mary wore a mermaid gown with a ruffled bottom and carried a bouquet of white blooms, thistles and greenery, which perfectly matched her groom’s boutonnière. Billowy slate blue bridesmaid dresses complemented the lakeside location, while the groomsmen’s navy suits added a crisp touch of tradition. The couple wrote their own light-hearted vows and exchanged them in a beautiful outdoor ceremony before heading off for photos with family.
Guests mingled during cocktail hour before entering a beautiful indoor reception with white candle centerpieces, slate blue napkins and rustic cross-back chairs. The wedding party took their place at the head table, which wrapped along one side of the room, and enjoyed a champagne toast and delicious plated dinner. Mary and Michael worked with a local bakery to create a beautiful dessert display with a modern threetier chocolate and vanilla cake, chocolate covered pretzels, macarons, cake pops and puzzle-piece cookies. The celebration continued with Double Platinum DJ Service, who went above and beyond to create a memorable evening!
“During our vows, Michael went first and his vows started out as the ‘traditional’ vows...but in typical Michael fashion, he turned it around and they became the funny/sarcastic vows I was hoping for. When it was my turn, I couldn't help but laugh because I didn't think that Michael was expecting sarcastic/funny—let alone football vows—from me. We got so many compliments on our vows...they were everything that our relationship is built on, which made them perfect.”

Pinstripes’ intimate, modern space offered the perfect setting for this couple’s big day. Missy and Danny, both professional graphic designers, wanted to incorporate geometric elements into every piece of their wedding, from the invitations to the cake. They exchanged vows in an outdoor ceremony in front of a triangular backdrop that was repurposed as décor during the reception. Vibrant pink bouquets popped against Missy’s gorgeous almond Stella York gown and her bridesmaids’ navy chiffon dresses. Danny donned a succulent boutonnière and a light gray suit, matching his groomsmen.
The couple kept their reception modern and fun. An acrylic welcome sign greeted guests as they arrived. Peach napkins were folded neatly over gold chargers and navy linens. Gold terrariums housed succulents and delicate prink blooms, serving as centerpieces and hanging décor. Dinner was served family-style and included some of the bride and groom’s favorite dishes. Dessert was a striking three-tier white and gold vanilla mousse spongecake by Toni Patisserie & Café, along with a gelato bar with three flavors and a variety of toppings. Guests received cookie favors that depicted the couple’s beloved cats, and enjoyed an evening of dancing, bowling and more. With the goal of saving for their first house, the newlyweds escaped on a mini-moon to Lake Geneva, WI after the wedding.
“Karen Daudelin prepared all our flowers. I chose peonies, which remind me of my late grandmother, and blue thistle to add texture and contrast to the bright summer flowers. We wanted a mix of corals, pinks, blues and plenty of succulents. I love the look of succulents in wedding bouquets and made sure we had them mixed in with our bouquets and boutonnières.”

Lucy and Nate met while attending college at the University of Denver and fell in love during their sophomore year. One wonderful morning in 2016, Lucy woke up to find Nate on one knee with flowers and a Starbucks cup that read “Mrs. Putnam.”
With the help of Allison DeYoung of LK Events, the couple began planning their wedding for October of the following year at the Chicago Botanic Garden in the bride’s hometown of Glencoe, IL. It was an unseasonably warm Midwest autumn day. Lucy looked stunning in beautiful ivory separates from BHLDN and carried a bouquet of cream roses. The wedding party dressed in black—bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses and Nate and his groomsmen donned classic black tuxedos and bow ties. Guests enjoyed hot cider as the couple exchanged vows in the Grand Allee, then made their way to the English Walled Garden for cocktails.
A candlelit path led to a tented outdoor reception, with cream and blush floral centerpieces by Revel Decor, beige linen napkins, rustic cross-back chairs and a cozy lounge area that overlooked a large pond. After enjoying a plated meal by the venue’s in-house chef, the newlyweds cut into a rose-covered classic white cake with fresh raspberries and lemon filling. The couple shared their first dance, then celebrated with their guests for the rest of the evening as Lakeshore Encores of Gold Coast Events entertained with a variety of music.
“It was the last Saturday in October—kind of a gamble for an outdoor ceremony, but it ended up being in the 70s. The ceremony was in the Grand Allee, a tree lined spot in the garden. We then moved to the English Walled Garden for cocktails. At sunset, we made our way on a candle lit walkway to the McGinley Pavilion, a covered tent patio overlooking a large pond. Dream come true.”

Marissa and Francis exchanged vows in a beautiful outdoor ceremony on June 9, 2018. Here are a few words of wisdom from the bride about their planning experience!
What was the most difficult part of planning and how did you handle it?
The one thing that surprised me was how much the expectations around the day weighed on me. I had my own expectations to deal with, but also what I believed everyone else was expecting. To get through it, I relied on my family and friends that were more than happy to help, and kept reminding myself that no matter what, at the end of the day, I'd still be married to my best friend.
How did you involve the groom in the planning process?
Francis and I discussed from the very beginning that this was going to be both of our days, and we'd both be involved in the vision and planning of the event! There were things that he cared more about, and things I cared more about, and we would divide and conquer.
What did you splurge on and why?
Photos are one of the only things that will last past a day that is honestly a whirlwind. Finding a photographer that we loved was important to us, so we were willing to go outside our budget. Knowing that Kristin was behind the camera, I
felt confident and knew that she would show the beauty of the event, no matter how stressed I felt! We also splurged on adding greenery to the ceiling of our reception space. It completely transformed the space and was definitely worth the extra cost!
What's the best advice you could give to a bride on her wedding day?
Enjoy your day! And get a wedding planner—at least a day-of one. It's so easy to get caught up in everything going on that day, but this is one of the only times you get to have everyone you and your spouse love in one place. Just try to be in the moment and enjoy it! Whenever I'd start to worry about something, I'd text our planner and she would simply say, "don't worry about it, I've got it, you just enjoy," and it would help SO much.
What's the most important thing you've learned in the months you've been married?
The wedding consumes so much of your life leading up to the big day that it's easy to lose sight of what it's all about. After the wedding, we had a chance to just focus on each other and our life together, and that's so special.
