Wantagh Seniors In The Spotlight At Awards Night

Dozens of students from the Wantagh High School Class of 2023 were recognized for their accomplishments over the last four years during the annual Senior

Awards Night on May 30. More than 50 awards and scholarships were presented during the festive ceremony, which brings the school and community together.

Presenters included board of education trustees, administrators, teachers, PTA leaders, alumni, community residents, officers of local service organizations and

business owners. Darlene Thompson, the senior scholarship coordinator, was the master of ceremonies. General organization coPresident Sean Browne and

Miss Wantagh Lilly Sloves led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone said the award recipients include students who have focused on academics, made a positive difference in the school and global community, and found innovative ways to put their skills on display.

Class of 2023 valedictorian Katherine Killian was the recipient of the board of education’s Paideia Award for leadership, scholarship and service. It was presented by Board President Laura Reich.

Salutatorian Nora Toscano received the Superintendent’s Excelsior Award for achievement and dedication, presented by Superintendent John McNamara. Katherine and Nora also both earned the President’s Award for

Outstanding Educational

Excellence.

Markus King and Lilly Sloves received the Wantagh High School Assistant Principal Award, chosen by assistant principals Nick Pappas and Dr. Christopher Widmann. Joanna Valvo earned the Black and Gold Award, and Sean Browne was recognized with the board of education Appreciation Award for his service as a student liaison this year. Scholarships were presented to graduating seniors from several parentteacher organizations including the PTA Council, 6-12 Association, Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary PTAs and SEPTA. Awards night concluded with memorial scholarships in honor of former Wantagh staff, students and community members.

A To Z Themes Close Out Year At Wantagh’s Mandalay School

The end of the school year is near, as evidenced by the annual ABC countdown at Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District.

Every day for the last 26 days of school before summer vacation features a theme for each letter of the alphabet. It began on May 15 with

animal day, and students were encouraged to wear shirts with animal prints or pictures. May 23 was gametime day with each class taking a break to

play some games. That was followed by hero and heroine day, with students donning superhero attire. Students will work their way through every

letter until the end of the school year. Flag Day coincides with T, so it will be a tribute to red, white and blue. On June 22, they will celebrate Y with their

yearly desk clean out, and finish up with Zip up Zee Backpack and Zoom Out of School Day on June 23. Photos

Bonding With WWII Vets Is Life-Changing

For 20 Wantagh High School students, accompanying their country’s greatest heroes to the National World War II Museum was the honor of a lifetime. Juniors and seniors were paired with World War II veterans for a trip to New Orleans from April 19-21, and it was an experience they will never forget.

The Soaring Valor program is sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation to bring World War II veterans to the museum that was built in their honor. The opportunity became available to Wantagh High School in March and despite the tight time frame, it came together very quickly.

Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone said within 48 hours of the announcement, 53 students submitted essays expressing their desire to attend.

“We knew it was a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity,” Dr. Guzzone said. “At its core, the program is to honor the service of these heroes, who put everything on the line at the age that our students are now.”

Senior Lilly Sloves expressed interest in attending because she wanted the experience of meeting World War II veterans. She was also inspired by her older brother, who visited the museum last year.

Each veteran was paired with one student from Wantagh High School and one from Lake George High School. Lilly’s veteran hails from Manhattan and at nearly 98 years old works as a Big Apple greeter. They sat together on the plane and were able to get to know each other before arriving in New Orleans. She was struck by his stories, especially how he helped free Japanese prisoners in the Philippines after the war ended.

Angelina LaMacchia’s veteran was 96 years old and she said that they have kept in touch since the trip,

texting daily. She recalls his story about being a deepsea diver while stationed off the coast of Texas. With an uncle who was in the Marines in the Vietnam era, Angelina has deep respect for those who served in the United States military. She applied for the Soaring Valor trip because she knew a chance to meet World War II veterans would never come around again.

Ryan Arbeit was paired with the oldest veteran on the trip, a 102-year-old from Maine who was a Navy pilot dive bomber and flew off the USS Ticonderoga. He noted that his veteran was very warm and witty, and told stories with great

detail. When he got home, he shared many of those stories with his family and friends.

“They were just so humble,” Ryan said of the veterans. “They made tremendous sacrifices. They didn’t have to do it, but they did do it. We wouldn’t have the world we live in without them.”

Sean Browne’s veteran was a 98-year-old from North Carolina. He said they quickly developed a strong bond and Sean was able to hear many stories from his veteran, including his time on a transport ship from Boston to Japan. Sean noted that his veteran was particularly thrilled to see a

picture of one of the ships he was on at the museum.

“Even though it was only two days, you really got to form a relationship with your veteran,” Sean said.

After a dinner on April 18 in Hauppauge, students departed early the next morning from Wantagh High School. They arrived at MacArthur Airport for a chartered flight with their veterans and chaperones. Students were amazed by the huge display of patriotism, from bagpipe players to a gathering of veterans from other eras to simple applause from other airport patrons.

“It made you realize how big of a deal it was,” Lilly

“We’re lucky to have this be our struggle, that I’m 18 years old and not having to go off and fight in a war,” Ryan said.

The students said it was gratifying to know how much their presence meant to the World War II heroes. Angelina said the hardest part of the trip was saying goodbye to her veteran on the last day.

“Hearing how much I meant to him was lifechanging,” she said.

The 20 students were accompanied by eight chaperones – Dr. Guzzone, Superintendent John McNamara, Assistant Principal Dr. Christopher Widmann, Director of Humanities Julie Rosslee, social worker Iris McNultyKline and teachers William Jackson, Deanna Pepe and Maria Prisco.

Mr. McNamara thanked the Gary Sinise Foundation for providing this opportunity to Wantagh students, and said it was the best field trip he has ever been on.

In New Orleans, the students visited the sevenbuilding museum with the veterans. There was a performance by the Victory Belles, who sang popular 1940s songs, and a 4D movie experience that documented the war. Students and their veterans toured museum exhibits, which focused on different aspects of the war including the conflicts in Europe and the Pacific and notable moments like D-Day.

Students said that the trip put their own lives into perspective. Recognizing that the veterans were fighting a war at their age, the stresses of school pale

“It was a great privilege to be a part of it,” he said. “Our students got so much out of the trip. To be able to experience the World War II Museum with a World War II veteran was eyeopening for our students. I was so proud of how they interacted and engaged with our veterans.”

Wantagh provided the veterans with several gifts. The school gave each a “mail call” booklet with messages of gratitude from students, staff and residents, as well as a Wantagh hat with an American flag “W.” The Wantagh Foundation for Education Excellence gifted each veteran a mug, and the Booster Club gave them Wantagh shirts.

“Our students were outstanding,” Dr. Guzzone said. “They were compassionate and eager to learn. They really made the veterans feel special.”

Fifth graders at Wantagh Elementary School got a glimpse of the future on May 8 when they met with student ambassadors from Wantagh Middle School.

As the transition to middle school nears, fifth graders received advice and guidance from those who best know what the

student experience is like there. The ambassadors visited each fifth grade classroom and shared a digital presentation. They discussed the middle school schedule, elective classes, extracurricular activities, lunch and recess, spirit activities, special events and rules

and expectations.

Perhaps most important, the ambassadors tried to alleviate any anxiety about the upcoming transition by highlighting the middle school’s supportive environment. They noted the “Warriors Care” motto and the Caring Warriors kindness recognition

program. Ambassadors also talked about the “helping team” which includes the principal, assistant principal, nurses, guidance counselors, psychologists and social workers.

A great aspect of middle school, the ambassadors explained, is the ability to make new friends as

students from all three elementary schools come together for the first time in sixth grade. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session.

Student ambassadors are sixth, seventh and eighth graders who were nominated by their

teachers for being good representatives of the school. They will also visit Wantagh’s other fifth grade classes at Forest Lake and Mandalay elementary schools. The program is overseen by teacher Corrie Harris and psychologist Tracy Zelenetz.

Catholic Daughters Of St. Bernard’s Holds Successful Baby Shower

Fulfilling its effort to support women who have given birth and are in need of assistance, Catholic Daughters Court #1690 of St. Bernard’s Church in Levittown holds an annual baby shower collecting contributions of baby clothing, diapers and supplies from the congregation. This year’s collection resulted in several carloads of donations to be delivered to two local organizations dedicated to help women who are pregnant or who have given birth.

The contributions support the work and services provided by Birthright in Wantagh and Momma’s House, which recently relocated to the former convent at St. Bernard’s Church property.

Birthright is an organization committed to providing confidential, non-

MOMMA’s House provides housing for young mothers aged 18 to 24 years and their babies for approximately two years, allowing the young mothers to continue

Wantagh Wind Ensemble Debuts Composer’s Latest Work

Audience members were in for a treat when they attended Wantagh High School’s spring concert on May 18. They enjoyed a performance by the Wind Ensemble, which included a song composed by renowned musician Erik Morales to premier at the show.

The original piece, “Huntress of the Fiery Air,” was part of the Wind Ensemble’s four-song set. Students were led by band conductor Danilo Aviles, and they got a tune up with Mr. Morales the day before the concert. He worked with the student-musicians for an hour to fine tune the piece.

Last year, Mr. Aviles said, students performed and “fell in love” with a well-known song by Mr. Morales, “Dakota Fanfare.” He pursued an opportunity through Nassau BOCES for a commissioned piece by Mr. Morales. BOCES provided the funds to bring the partnership to fruition.

“Huntress of the Fiery Air,” a 5-minute, 45-second piece that is based on a poem by Mr. Morales’ father, was delivered

to the ensemble in March and students rehearsed for two months, along with their other songs for the spring concert.

After listening to the student-musicians and providing feedback, Mr. Morales then participated in a question and answer session with the band. He spoke about the origins of the piece, his inspiration as a composer, his background as a musician and more. Mr. Morales explained that being a successful composer requires knowledge of all instruments in an ensemble – how they sound and what they can and cannot do.

Mr. Morales signed an enlarged copy of the first page of the “Huntress of the Fiery Air” sheet music for the band.

“It’s something I never thought I’d get to be a part of,” said band President Siobhan Finn, a senior clarinet player. “Meeting someone famous and having him work with us was just amazing. His advice will definitely help me play better with the people around me.”

Natasha Meagher, co-vice president of the band, plays the alto saxophone and had a solo in “Huntress of the Fiery Air.”

“I really like piece and it’s really fun to play,” she said. “It’s great to hear from the person who wrote it and get feedback from him.”

Senior trumpet player Ryan Horowitz added, “It’s very enlightening to hear from the person who actually wrote this and to understand the process behind creating music.”

The Wind Ensemble is the highest level ensemble of the three bands available within the Wantagh High School music program. It is an honors-level class and students must audition at a high level of proficiency on their instruments to be selected for the group. The workload and rehearsal pace are challenging, Mr. Aviles explained, and the repertoire is at the highest two levels of the state standards for band music.

Joseph Daniele has been a resident of Wantagh since birth and is a 2020 Wantagh High School graduate. Having strong family, business and community ties to Wantagh for many years now, he began his business. Joseph Daniele Landscape Design and Irrigation in 2013. His expertise in creating and maintaining custom lawn care and timeless landscapes for residents and businesses alike with beautiful lawn designs and quality irrigation systems in his passion. Dependability, professionalism and high quality workmanship is what is provided on a continuous basis. His business provides seasonal lawn care and design and irrigation systems to Wantagh, NY and the surrounding areas on Long Island.

Since 2021, Joseph Daniele and the Joseph Daniele Landscape Design and Irrigation team have been a Wantagh Chamber of Commerce business member. He and his team continue to be very active within the Chamber and graciously donate their services each season to the Chamber’s “Welcome to Wantagh” signs throughout the town and sponsors the sign located on Jerusalem Avenue just west of Seamans Neck Road in Wantagh. Joseph Daniele Landscape Design and Irrigation are proud sponsors of New York’s local state park police too!

Joseph Daniele recently married and he and his wife, Fortine are awaiting the birth of their first child in September. He enjoys boating, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.
