Skin Cancer Awareness
The World Cancer Research Fund reports that skin cancer is the seventeenth most common cancer across the globe. The United States, Germany and the United Kingdom had the highest number of skin cancer cases in 2022, and the U.S. also had the distinction of having the most deaths from skin cancer (7,368) in that year. Though individuals with naturally darker skin tend to think they might not be as vulnerable to the disease as fair-skinned individuals, that is not necessarily true. While it is true that fairskinned individuals must be especially careful when spending time in the sun, the American Academy of Dermatology notes that skin cancer in patients with darker skin tones is often diagnosed in later stages of the disease when it’s more difficult to treat. Simply put, all people, including those with naturally darker skin tones, must take the threat of skin cancer seriously and take every precaution to protect their skin when spending time in the sun.

golf, varsity baseball, boys varsity tennis, girls varsity flag football, varsity softball, boys varsity spring track and
girls varsity spring track –were presented along with certificates and plaques recognizing Most Valuable Player awards, Coaches Awards, Spirit Awards and Scholar-Athlete awards.

Six Seniors At Deer Park High School Sign To Play College Sports
Six superb senior athletes from Deer Park High School committed to continuing their sports careers in college this fall during a May 29 recognition ceremony hosted by District Administrator for Athletics, Physical Education, Health and Recreation Dominick Fontana in the school’s chorus room.
Anthony Aybar will play football at Nassau Community College. A winner of Deer Park’s Falcon Award, he plans to major in liberal arts.
“I always wanted to play football in college at any level,” Aybar said.
Dimaunte’ Gardner will play basketball at Farmingdale State College. In his Deer Park career, Gardner was named League MVP, All-Tournament Team, All-Long Island, AllCounty, All-Conference and twice All-League. He has not decided on a major yet.
“I chose Farmingdale
because it’s a good program with good players and coaches,” Gardner said.
Juan Gonzalez Mayoral will play soccer at Ithaca College. He earned AllState, All-Region, twice All-County, twice AllConference and All-League honors during his Falcons career and plans to major in finance.
“I chose Ithaca College because it offers a strong finance program that will prepare me for a successful career in business,”
Gonzalez Mayoral said.
“The college also allows me to continue playing soccer at a competitive level. I was also impressed by the professional opportunities and connections that Ithaca provides for its students.”
Alejandro Pino will play soccer at Long Island University. During his high school years, Pino played exclusively on the MLS Next club team, the highest level of youth
soccer in the United States. He plans to major in sports management.
“LIU gives me the best opportunity to play collegiate soccer at the Division I level and also further my education,” Pino said.
Deer Park Senior Earns State Senate’s Youth Leadership Recognition Award
Deer Park High School senior Syed Muhammad Hashmi has earned the New York State SenAate’s Youth Leadership Recognition Award. This program honors outstanding students who will become the state’s future leaders. Eligible students include current sophomores, juniors and seniors who excel not only academically but through leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities.
Hashmi currently serves as Deer Park’s Town of Babylon student representative and as vice president of the school’s student council. In recognition of his achievement, Hashmi received a congratulatory personalized certificate from New York State Sen. Monica Martinez.

Kelsey Rotzman will join the dance team at Rutgers University. During her Deer Park career, she was named kickline MVP, earned Section XI Class A Game Day Academic All-County honors and was the recipient of the 2025 Suffolk Zone Award. Rotzman plans to major in exercise science.
“I chose Rutgers because of its excellence in academics and its passion for sports,” Rotzman said. “When deciding where I wanted to attend college, I knew I wanted to be close to home, pushed academically and continue my sport. I spent time looking into many schools and dance teams, but ultimately Rutgers was my top choice. Their dance team has a strong passion
for supporting other athletes as well as making a difference in their community, and they have given me the opportunity to continue to do what I love while also continuing my education.”
Alana Villavicencio will play softball at Hartwick College. She earned AllLeague and All-Division honors during high school and plans to major in political science.
“The Hartwick community and girls on the team are very welcoming,” Villavicencio said. “We bonded very fast.”
“This day really represents how much hard work, dedication and sacrifice that all the athletes and their families have put in,” Fontana said. “To get this far and be successful
is obviously a tremendous accomplishment and there’s a lot that goes into it, so this is something to be extremely proud of. There are only a handful of athletes every year from any given school that go on to play at the next level, so if you’re one of those chosen athletes and get a chance to continue your career, it’s well deserved. When you show up to college in August or September, you’re going to put in the same hard work, show your worth and prove yourself. Just stay positive, stay hungry and stay humble, and I’m sure you’ll have the same success at the next level that you had with Deer Park. We wish you nothing but the best of luck.”

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Fourth Of July Cookie Cups
Many people are eager for Independence Day celebrations in early summer. There is much to be excited about, as festivities often begin in the afternoon with barbecues and pool parties, and commence late at night after fireworks shows that light up the night sky. Still, not everyone enjoys the extra noise and busy nature of July 4th parties, particularly furry members of the family. Animal control services often report an increase in

2⁄3 cup almonds
1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, plus more for the work surface
1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder
1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt
DIRECTIONS:
1. To make the cookie cups: preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a 24-count mini muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large mixing bowl using a handheld mixer, beat the butter and granulated sugar together for 1 to 2 minutes, or until well combined.
4. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined, making sure to stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
5. Mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.
6. Evenly distribute the cookie dough among all 24 cups in the mini muffin pan, a little more than 1 tablespoon of cookie dough per cup. Press each ball of cookie dough into the cups and smooth it out.

1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar
1 12-ounce jar raspberry jam
7. Bake for 11 to 13 minutes, or until the edges of the cookie cups are lightly browned and the tops are set.
8. Remove from the oven, and make an indentation in each cookie using the back of a measuring spoon. Allow to cool in the muffin pan, then carefully remove from the pan and set aside.
9. To make the vanilla buttercream frosting: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large mixing bowl using a handheld mixer, beat the butter for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing in each addition until well combined.
10. Add the heavy whipping cream and vanilla extract, and continue mixing until fully combined, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Pipe the frosting into the cooled cookie cups and top with the sprinkles.
12. Store the cookie cups in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Prepare Pets For Fourth Of July Festivities

Be careful with alcoholic drinks
Party hosts typically serve beer, wine and cocktails. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets, says the ASPCA. Animals can become very intoxicated, severely depressed or go into comas if they drink alcohol. Keep spirited drinks well out of reach.
Check with the vet
Many pets are prone to anxiety from loud noises, such as thunderstorms and fireworks, and lots of commotion — something that occurs in spades come July 4th. Some veterinarians recommend a small course of antianxiety medication or a sedative to help pets cope
with the stimuli.
Create a quiet space
Allow pets to ride out the day in their comfortable, quiet and cozy retreats. If necessary, create a space in an interior room. Cover the pet crate with a blanket and offer favorite toys or bedding to create a soothing environment.
Place notes on doors and gates
While it’s best to keep pets in a locked room away from the fray, some pets like to socialize with guests and are not bothered by noises. However, alert guests with notes posted on doors and fence gates to check to make sure pets are not trying to escape behind them. All doors should be closed firmly when entering or exiting.
Pick up debris
Firework debris can rain down on properties even if
you were not shooting off the fireworks. Curious pets may pick it up or eat it, which runs the risk of an upset stomach or even an intestinal blockage. Check your yard before letting pets out to play.
Keep an eye on the grill
Pets can be opportunists,
and those burgers and chicken drumsticks smell delicious to pets. Pets that get too close to the grill can become injured. And if pets eat leftovers, they may end up with digestive distress or even be poisoned by foods that are toxic to cats and dogs.

Deer Park High School Honors 103 Senior Award Recipients
Deer Park High School held its annual senior awards on June 3, with high school administrators and district directors presenting numerous departmental awards. The recognitions ranged in subjects including business, English language
arts and reading, family and consumer science, fine arts, performing arts, health and physical education, mathematics, science and technology education, social studies, world language and English as a new language, and guidance and counseling,
which were awarded to 103 well-deserving recipients from the Class of 2025.
Principal Charles Cobb welcomed the seniors and their families, and lovely music was provided by the school’s string quintet.
