Helping Hands In West Islip, Inc.

Helping Hands in West Islip, Inc. celebrated Flag Day, Father's Day, and Long Island's families by collecting and distributing homemade non-perishable kids' meals, summer toys, backpacks, school supplies, and lots of summertime treats. Jennifer and Robert Gallozzi kicked off this special week at Bayshore Head Start. They gifted the
graduating pre-preschoolers with brand-new backpacks and entertained 70 children from five classes of Early Head Start and Pre-K with dance, song, games, takehome lunches, and assorted gifts. They shared meals, school supplies, and gifts with Suffolk County's Youth Enrichment Services, Dropin Lounges, and children in various hospitality kitchens
that will get homemade meals throughout the summer. They are grateful for the community support. Please follow their program on Facebook and consider a gift on their FB link. https://www.facebook.com/ share/1GRG4CKGV8/ For more information, please contact Jennifer at jennifergallozzi@gmail.com

Music Courses
Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind
the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Benefits To Cooking Your Own Meals
Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or take-out foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking, the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ selfconfidence, reassuring them that they can
handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline or forgetfulness), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.
