ASID Award: 1st Place, Large Kitchen - 2020 Integrated into a large, open floor plan, this modern kitchen was designed to satisfy the requirements for entertaining large groups of people. While managing to feel intimate in its everyday disposition, it simultaneously exudes sophisticated appeal. A massive slab of polished wood serves as a dining table with seating for up to ten quests. Pneumatic lift stools provide plentiful casual countertop seating. A pass-through window into the exterior living space offers added utility and functionality. The carefully curated palette of woods, natural stone, concrete flooring and metal finishes adorn the space with a visual richness intended to anchor the immense volume of the open floor plan. The cabinets are clad in a walnut veneer with a black granite countertop on the perimeter; the island is a natural stone slab selected by the client. Porcelain tile, which replicates concrete, is easier to maintain than concrete tile. The blue color scheme is carried from indoors to out.

An emphasis on negative space drove Stocker’s design intent to exaggerate the volume of the interior and push modernistic expression to its apex. The interior architecture’s minimalist palette juxtaposes and contrasts the vibrant visual accents adorning the residence. Custom furnishings, luxe finishes and a curated collection of modern art infuse punches of pattern, color and texture for maximum visual impact. “The client’s favorite color, red, was an integral element used to drive design decisions,” Stocker says. “Accents contained within the spectrum of the hue are appointed throughout, unifying every space within the residence.
