Moving Forward s I reflect on the 2021-22 school year, I am so proud of our entire school community for its drive, determination, patience, and perseverance to not only continue navigating in-person learning during a pandemic and times of global unrest, but also to push beyond being present daily to focus on crafting and executing plans for the Academy’s future growth and development.

Alexandra Webb, Environmental Education & Enrichment Coordinator Growing up in Western Massachusetts, Alex Webb was raised to live in and love the outdoors. She grew up hiking Mount Greylock and kayaking on Nashawannuck Pond. Her love of nature led her to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies at Juniata College and she is currently finishing her Masters in Environmental Education from Slippery Rock University. In her first year at NDA, Alex has helped students at every grade level understand that their environmental choices have an impact on our common home. Through her guidance, support, and teaching, students studied beaver habitats, tapped the Academy’s maple trees and made syrup, grew their own produce to make delicious and healthy snacks and much more. Reflecting on the future, Webb said, “I am excited for my second year at NDA and the positive impact that I hope environmental education will have on our students and their actions and choices for years to come.”

After a three-year hiatus due to COVID, students across all grade levels were excited to welcome families and friends for the Academy’s All-School Fine Arts Night on Thursday, May 19. The evening showcased student work in multiple mediums. On display were works of art created by students in grades Pre-K through 12, as well as sculptures, piano solos, musical performances by Glee Club and the NDA Playmakers drama troupe. An exciting new addition to the program was the multimedia presentations composed by Middle School students. Students were challenged to create a melody over a given chord progression or compose an eight bar solo using the pentatonic scale. Check out these talented music producers by using this QR code:

12 McGuiggan,SNDdeNRememberingSisterKathrynLawrence (1934-2021)

The Academy witnessed great growth during her tenure, including enhanced academics, the addition of athletic teams, and improvements to thecampus. When Sister Kathryn came back to NDA in 1980, the only interscholastic sport was basketball. She was an avid sports fan and under her leadership, NDA added numerous varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams. The Academy also fundraised to build tennis courts and an athletic facility that still bears Sister Kathryn’s name, which features a track, soccer field, and two softball fields. In 2009, Sr. Kathryn was inducted into the Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Special Contributor” for all she had done for athletics at NDA. Until recently, Sr. Kathryn served as moderator of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 2015, the Alumni Association created the Sister Kathryn McGuiggan Service Award, which we look forward to presenting at the return of the Blue and Gold Gala on Saturday, November 5, 2022. We plan to honor Sister Kathryn’s enduring legacy at the Gala and hope you’ll join us.

Anyone who has been affiliated with the Academy over the last fifty years will remember Sister Kathryn Lawrence McGuiggan, SNDdeN. Her work in the field of education spanned forty years and she dedicated more than thirty of those years to the Academy of Notre Dame. She served the Academy from 1969 to 1974 as an English teacher, guidance counselor, and mentor. In 1980, Sister Kathryn returned to the Academy as CEO/ President, a role which she held for more than twenty-five years.

In additionto her athletic accomplishments, she is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. As Co-President of Student Council she helped to lead many school-wide activities and events. Kate exudes the many qualities and attributes thatmade Sr. Kathryn a legend in our school community.

ServiceExtraordinary NDA extends an enormous thank you to Sr. Mary Farren, SNDdeN, as her board term comes to a close at the Academy of Notre Dame, Tyngsboro. Sr. Mary has worn many hatsat NDA since1996, most recently as a member oftheBoardofDirectors, Chair of the Board Mission Integration Committeeand all around champion of NDA. Herdedication to NDA’s Mission, students, families and our beloved learning community has guided NDA for over 26 years. In her role as President of the Corporation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur East-West Province, we know Sr. Mary will continue to have a watchful eye on our continued progress and we will keep her close always! We are grateful that Sr. Barbara Barry, SNDdeN, will remain on the Board of Directors for the upcoming school year. Since the 2000 Sports Awards Night, the Friends of NDA (FoNDA) has presented a Distinguished Service Award to an individual who has made significant contributions to our student athletes and the Academy’s athletic program.

Mr. Bradley is a long time FoNDA member who served as treasurer for three years. In that capacity, Mr. Bradley was involved in numerous fundraising efforts that have enabled FoNDA to purchase equipment for various teams, allocate funds to our many clubs and activities, and fund our senior day celebrations. He has been present at countless athletic events, even those where his own daughters, Stephanie ’22 and Victoria ’19, were not playing.

This year, NDA announced that the award will be renamed in honor ofa very special man, Joseph R. Fucarile, who passed away in October 2021. For many years, Mr. Fucarilewas a major contributor to NDA - giving histime, treasureand talent. In fact, more than 30 years ago, he started the tradition of bringing together and honoring our student athletes throughthe annual Sports Awards Night. He was a founding father of the Lower School Parents’ Club and a member of the NDA Board of Directors, serving as Chairman for 12 years. He was instrumental in helping to build NDA’s track, softballand soccer fields. Mr. Fucarile agreed to chair the committee thus making the dream of a high quality athletic program a reality. He and some other fathers even rolled out the sod on the main soccer field by hand! Mr. Fucarile, who was oftenreferred to as “Mr. NDA,” was inducted into the NDA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

Mr. Fucarile’s wife, Faith, and their three children, Jeff, Kelly’96, and Bryan, were in attendance as the first award in his name was presented to DaveBradley.

The Class of 2022 and their parents adopted the NDA cemetery as their Senior Class Gift project this year. The cemetery, located behind the school,is the final resting place of 41 Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, manyof whom lived and taught at the Academy. The graduating class wanted to pay tributeto these special women who shaped our school and impacted the lives of all the students who came before the classof 2022andallthatwill follow. We are grateful to two seniors,Steph BradleyandSamSheehan, and their fathers, Dave Bradleyand Matt Sheehan, who spearheaded the initiative with Jake Norton, Director of Facilities. Together, they worked to restore this important space on campus by cleaning headstones, clearing the landscape, andcreating garden beds. They also partnered with localvendorsandin-kind donors to replace the centerpiece of the cemetery; a ten-foot concrete crucifix thathad been damagedby a fallen tree. This year, the Academy was thrilled to bring back a treasured event: the Alumni Mass & Tea, featuring the Senior Medallion Ceremony. This annual event honors distinguished alumni and welcomes the graduating class into the Alumni Association with the presentation of the Academy Medallion – a gold, Maltese cross worn by graduates of the many Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur schools all over the world. It serves to identify alumni as belonging to an amazing group of individuals, who are strong, intelligent, spiritual, and generous. We were pleased to be able to present the St. Julie Alumni of the Year award to three deserving alumni: Sister Joanne Sullivan ’68, Shelagh Mahoney ’83 and Amanda Stangroom McLaughlin ’03. Named for the foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the St. Julie Alumni of the Year Award is presented to individuals who personify the NDA mission and the hopes that the Academy has for its graduates. The ideal candidate is an alumna/us who has demonstrated vocational accomplishment, a commitment to community service, a dedication to Christian values, and ongoing loyalty to the Academy.
