STUDENT EXPERIENCE IN HONDURAS
The Sisters of Notre Dame are referred to as women with “hearts as wide as the world.” It is with this sentiment that the Academy is dedicated to living the mission of St. Julie and carrying the Sisters with us into the global community. One of these experiences is quickly becoming a tradition for our staff and students – the annual trip to support the Olancho Aid Foundation. For the second time, several of our NDA community members were immersed in the language, landscape, food and traditions of the people of Honduras.
For eight days in June, six of our students were accompanied by Campus Minister Jamie Deignan and Director of Institutional Advancement Greg Palmer on a service immersion trip to Juticulpa, Olancho, Honduras. During their stay, students immersed themselves into the culture of the people while spending their days at Escuela Nazareth, the only school for students with special needs in the entire state of Olancho. Students
and teachers welcomed our Lancers whole-heartedly into their classroom and bonds between our students and theirs quickly began forming. Whether the kids were jumping rope, practicing with the brailler, or simply dancing and playing, hearts were indeed opened as wide as the world.
Another poignant moment during the experience was being welcomed into the school community of Instituto Oscar Cardenal Rodriguez, the Catholic middle and high school that is also sponsored by the Olancho Aid Foundation. Crazy hair day and spirit week were not foreign to our NDA students, and the language they spoke was the language of smiles, laughter and a common understanding of ‘just being a kid’.
Seniors Jacqueline Martineau, Anna Deignan, Grace Emanuele and Felix DeLaRosa made the financial sacrifice before going off to college in the fall because
they knew it was important to give back after they had been given so much by their education at the Academy. Freshman Alaina Foss and Sophomore Nicelys De Los Santos also took advantage of the service immersion program. Only one of our participants had command of the Spanish language, but everyone quickly learned how to engage. They learned how to communicate through eye contact, hand motions, showing up with genuine care.
“I am so grateful I got the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture different from mine where I got to experience first hand the beauty of simplicity in a fast paced world,”
the strength of their communities that is the real truth. Anna reflected,
“The country and its people are filled with a complex and beautiful culture centered around faith, celebration, community, and family. I have never before felt so welcomed by a community and made to feel like I was a part of their family.”
Following the immersion trip, students’ families participated in getting the word out via social media that they were supporting the Foundation further by creating
“I will always remember all the moments of shared joy and the way I was inspired to be more present and appreciative in my everyday life.” -GraceEmanuele
Nicelys said. Slowing down was difficult on day one. We are so used to getting to the next thing but the students really got to stop and see the beauty of living in the moment. Grace experienced a trip that she will always cherish: “I will always remember all the moments of shared joy and the way I was inspired to be more present and appreciative in my everyday life.”
Jacqui was struck by a four year old at Escuela Nazareth. “I met Allison who was a tiny, sassy little girl with the funniest personality. She spoke a lot but I had no clue what she was saying, but she had this way of making everyone around her laugh with just her expressions and attitude. She reminded me that joy can come in the smallest, boldest packages.”
One of the most important aspects of the program at the Olancho Aid Foundation is breaking down stereotypes and preconceived notions about Central America. The students spent long bus rides admiring the amazing landscape, which was quickly followed up by areas of extreme poverty. They came to see that it is the strong hearts of the people, their dedication to their family and
an Amazon wish list of educational tools that would foster greater experiences for the students of Escuela Nazareth. They called the campaign “Christmas in July” and were able to provide more than 50 brand new items to the children they grew to know and love.
If you would like to sponsor a student for our next Service Immersion Trip, please contact Greg Palmer at gpalmer@ndatyngsboro.org and 978-649-7611 ext 321.

Celebrating the Arts at NDA
At any point in the school day, you can walk the halls and see art projects adorning the walls from Pre-K all the way through 12th grade. You can often hear a student practicing the piano somewhere in the building, even after school hours.
The NDA community is enriched by the immense talent of our faculty and students, from acting to painting to singing and beyond. A few snapshots of the Arts at NDA include the fall musical, the Lower School play in the spring, the Middle School musical, the annual Christmas concert and Fine Arts Night. There is truly an opportunity for every student to learn about and dive into the Arts!

Congrats to our Alice Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Recipient!
Alexis Martineau ‘23 is a junior at Emmanuel College in Boston, studying to become a pediatric nurse. She is involved in numerous clubs and sports at college, and also gives her time serving the community in various ways. She says her most meaningful volunteer experiences have been at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk for the past two years:
“Listening to survivors’ stories has given me a deeper understanding of resilience and the importance of hope.”
This scholarship was established by the Sacco Family in honor of their friend Alice Kennedy. Edith Sacco and Alice Kennedy met as nursing students at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and became lifelong friends. This scholarship is awarded to an alum pursuing a four-year degree in Nursing at an accredited college or university.
Congratulations, Lexie - we know you will be an incredible nurse who will truly care for, see and value your patients!

SUMMER CAMP AT NDA
Summer camp is a time for sunkissed faces, tired kiddos and life-long friendships made. At CampNDA it’s also about legacy. Our campers are not only students at the Academy, but local kids who are familiar with our beautiful campus and children of alumni. Another special quality of our CampNDA family is the connection our counselors and administrators have to the Academy.

CampNDA takes full of advantage of the Academy’s 200+ acre campus. Campers take nature walks on Rachel’s Trail, hunt for frogs, turtles and other pond life on the shores of our ponds as well as grow vegetables and herbs in our geodome.
Each week our caring counselors, many of whom are NDA teachers and/or or alumni, introduce campers to new skills and activities. From arts and crafts to science experiements to mini play productions, CampNDA encourages children to learn, grow and thrive!

FUN FACT!
Did you know that summer camp at NDA is a long-standing NDA tradition? In 1933, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur opened Camp Wannalancet on NDA property, a summer camp for children. In 1943, they had 335 campers! Camp Wannalancet was open from 1933 until 1951, and then again from 1965 to 1968.
Abby Golden, class of 2022

Currently a nursing student at UMass Lowell, Abby is in her senior year. Her NDA education set the foundation for continuing her education, how she approaches classes and extracurriculars, and choosing priorities. Most importantly, she learned at NDA how to believe in herself and embrace challenges.
“MyadviceforNDAstudentsistouseallthe resourcestheyprovideyou,alwaysaskforhelpwhen youneedit,andhavefun!”
Helen Doyle, class of 1963
Helen spent 12 years at NDA, when teachers were all Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and blackboards were beautifully decorated in chalk artwork done by Sister Vincent de Paul. Retired now, Helen spent 40 years as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Boston City Hospital/Boston Medical Center. While at NDA, there were boarders from all over the world, preparing Helen to work successfully with surgical residents, faculty and staff from all over the world. Her advice is simple:
“Enjoyeveryminuteoftheincredibleeducationyou willreceiveatNDA.SpreadSisterJulie’sjoyallover theworld.”
WHERE ARE NDA ALUMNI NOW?
Kelly Bornstein, class of 2005
As a pharmacist, Kelly helps manage a team that provides anticoagulation management for patients at Beth Israel Lahey Health. “NDA gave me and my classmates an environment to find our confidence, passions, and interests. It was during my junior year that I realized how much interest I had in the field of STEM.”
Kelly not only appreciates the academic side of her NDA education, but says the sports program was equally as important and influential. She tells NDA students to:
“Staycurious.Youneverknowwhatyoumaylearn! Also,fellowDamiesareeverywhere.”

Where are you now? Scan to share with us!
Marybeth Trouville Thompson, class of 1991
Marybeth’s experience at NDA with fantastic and supportive teachers led her to fall in love with the idea of working in a school. As a result, she has been a school guidance counselor in Nashua, NH for the last 27 years! During her four years at NDA, she fostered a strong faith in God, which still continues to be a part of her daily life. Her advice for NDA students is to:

“Justbreatheandlive.Thereisnothingmoreregretful thanstressingoverthingsyoucannotcontrol.Trust thatyouarewhereyouareforareasonandthat thingshappenastheyshould.Keepthefaith!”

AMAYA MURGUIA ‘17
Amaya Murguia, Class of 2017 valedictorian, spent 13 years at the Academy of Notre Dame before moving on to Cornell University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in 2020 and Master’s degree in 2021 in electrical and computer engineering. While at NDA, her accomplishments were numerous and set the stage for her higher education achievements.
her to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in three years and complete a master’s degree in her fourth year at Cornell.
Amaya’s time at NDA helped shape her - from ski Fridays to volunteering through Campus Ministry to Snapchat stories as an assignment to early morning meetings with Mrs. Turkovich - it all made a difference. She also held countless
“Faith was a natural part of everyday life while at NDA, and I continue to make faith a part of my life. My faith keeps me grounded, and I attribute much of its importance in my life to NDA.”
Amaya is currently a fifth year doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in the electrical engineering program where she conducts magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research. In particular, she studies quantitative MRI methods for imaging brain white matter for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease applications - research she intends to continue after earning her Ph.D. Amaya attributes her interest in engineering to her STEM classes at NDA, and the support from her Middle and Upper School teachers helped her realize that she had both talent and interest in STEM. Her advanced courses at NDA allowed
leadership roles throughout middle and high school, where she developed public speaking, networking and leadership skills. Building on that foundation, she currently leads the Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering student organization at the University of Michigan.
About her faith journey at NDA and beyond, Amaya says “Faith was a natural part of everyday life while at NDA, and I continue to make faith a part of my life. My faith keeps me grounded, and I attribute much of its importance in my life to NDA.” Naturally, her favorite flower is a sunflower, connecting her to St. Julie and her upbringing at NDA.
Meredith Norton, Class of 2007, remembers her years at the Academy of Notre Dame with fondness. While she was in the Upper School, Meredith experienced the tragic death of her father. She remembers leaning on her community at NDA, where some of her closest friendships were made, to get her through that difficult time. As she graduated from high school and moved on to college, Meredith chose to study psychology, hoping that she could give back to others and help them through their own struggles, using both her professional training and personal experiences.
Currently, Meredith works as the Program Director of Trot On at Justice Resource Institute. Using critical thinking skills she developed at NDA, she created this career for herself after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Social Work, both from Boston University. She combines her passion for horses with her knowledge of psychology to help young people ages 12-24 to heal through equine therapy. She describes this as a way for her clients to connect and form relationships with horses and observe their interactions and body language to learn about emotional regulation and communication. Making her job even more rewarding, Meredith works alongside her own horse, Zephyr, who she’s had since she was 15 years old.
When reflecting on NDA, Meredith says that the sheer number of times she had to go up and down the stairs is what sticks out in her mind - and then pointed out that this in itself was a bonding experience for her and her classmates - all NDA alumni can relate to that! More seriously, she says that NDA was exactly what she needed in high school, with the close-knit community and support system helping her through one of the hardest times in her life, which then set in motion her desire to help others in a similar way.
Meredith Norton is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and Equine Specialist in Mental Health in Learning through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship Intl., and has an Equine Assisted Mental Health Practitioner PostMaster’s Certificate from the University of Denver.

Throughout her career, Meredith has shown creativity in her work. At a previous job, she built the equine therapy program and developed a successful group therapy for adolescents - a victory for sure! She had many adolescents enjoying and truly benefiting from group therapy with their peers and the horses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Meredith had to rethink her approach to equine therapy on a remote platform. Until she was able to get back into the pasture, she worked with videos of horses, books about horses and pictures to help her clients reflect on their own experiences and progress in their healing journey.

LAUDATO SI
“We act on behalf of justice, peace and care for creation”
SNDdeNHallmark#3
These words are not just a catchy phrase, or a motto for a lesson that lasts a day or even a week. Rather, it is a mantra that carries our school and practices as we embrace Pope John Paul II’s encyclical Laudato Si. At the Academy, our entire community was involved in bringing the letter alive beginning this past March. Campus Minister Jamie Deignan spent a 45 minute session with all students in grades Pre-K4-Grade 8, instructing them on the importance of the document in terms and with images that they could digest at an age-appropriate level. Following the classroom instruction, all students participated in planting a variety of more than 18 fruit, flower and vegetable seeds. The children and their teachers would then water and watch them for the next several weeks in our growlab, while they anticipated the fruits of their labor to come.
In April, as part of Mission Week (a week in which we celebrate St. Julie and her desire to ‘educate the whole person for life’) our Middle and Upper School students were involved in a week-long project of moving compost, turning garden beds, building new garden spaces and benches to enjoy our campus and its beautiful environment. The geodome was now ready to receive the seedlings that had been planted in March!
In a beautiful way, our students and teachers began to see the process of hard work resulting, quite literally, in growth. The tiny seeds began to grow and soon after, our campers at CampNDA took over the tasks of caring for the now really big plants! The harvest began to appear in incredibly delicious cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, swiss chard and green beans. Fall will welcome back our students and the pumpkins and watermelons for which we’ve been patiently waiting.
This seed to table experience is another way in which we not only learn, but live the message of St. Julie Billiart :
“Nature is God’s living, visible garment, an unlimited broadcasting system through which God speaks to us every hour, if only we tune in.”

The Rachel Anne Morrison ‘05 Science Lab
The Rachel Anne Morrison ‘05 Science Lab has gone from dream to reality, and opened just in time to begin the 2025-2026 school year. We’d like to give particular thanks to the Morrison Family, Science Lab Committee, and donors at all levels who have made this a reality for today’s students. We successfully raised over $500,000 to build the Lab and provide NDA students with a new space for hands-on discovery, learning, and innovation.
Named for Rachel Anne Morrison, class of 2005 valedictorian, 12-season runner, and STEAM advocate, the Lab is a way to honor her memory and strengthen NDA’s commitment to science education and STEAM initiatives. Like Rachel, many of our students go on to pursue STEAM majors and careers. We look forward to seeing this new space used in classes and extracurricular offerings.

Celebrating Our Grandfriends
The COVID-19 pandemic may have stopped the annual Grandparents Day, but this year Grandfriends Day made a debut at NDA! Grandfriends -- grandparents or special friends -- of students in grades PreK-3 to 5 came to NDA campus for a morning full of Easter joy - coloring eggs and spending time with their precious Little Lancers. It was an unforgettable day for the students and their Grandfriends, as well as all the faculty, staff, and volunteers who facilitated.
We look forward to the next Grandfriends Day in 2026!

ATHLETES IN THE NEWS
Athletics are an important part of the NDA experience. We are proud of the fact that nearly 60% of our Upper School students challenge themselves beyond the classroom by participating in competitive sports. In SY24-25, two Lancers were publicly recognized for their athletic prowess:

Mackenzie Gibbons ‘26
In January, 2025 Mackenzie Gibbons ‘26 was one of only three swimmers named Athlete of the Year by the Boston Globe. Gibbons was featured in the Globe’s All-Scholastic special edition newspaper. The Globe noted that she took first place in the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle at North sectionals, then emerged a double winner at Division 2 states by championing the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Last swim season, Gibbons broke seven school records! We cannot wait to see what she does in her senior year at NDA.

Jacqui Martineau ‘25
Class of 2025 Jacqui Martineau was featured in the Lowell Sun and was recognized as one of the top softball talents in the region! For the 2025 softball season, Martineau, who played catcher, boasted a .733 batting average and a .765 on-base percentage with 44 hits, 16 doubles and four home runs! After fielding 10 offers, Martineau is attending Emmanuel College where she will continue her commitment to the values and traditions of a Sisters of Notre Dame learning community and softball.
Football at NDA? Yes!
Did you know that NDA now offers football for young men attending our Upper School?
NDA is excited to share that boys in grades 7-12 are eligible to compete on a cooperative football team with boys from Lowell Catholic and the Community Charter School of Lowell (CCSL). Practices and games will be hosted at Lowell Catholic. “We welcome the opportunity to partner with Lowell Catholic and the Community Charter School of Lowell so that we can provide football as an option for our students,” said NDA Athletic Director Lisa Zappala.
“We are confident that Lowell Catholic’s Coach Zach Swale will provide our young men with an outstanding experience.”

6,450 beads were put in place one by one throughout the summer in order for our staff to each receive a keychain of Saint Julie. Safira Aujla, a junior at the Academy, was also a camp counselor this summer and a volunteer. During her lunch breaks and volunteer days, she spent her time crafting these incredible mementos so each of our staff, faculty and administration could start the year in the spirit of Saint Julie!
“How happy we are to bel ong to the good God with our whole hearts.”
