FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends,

Because of you, the Academy of Notre Dame fulfilled its promise and mission,

“to educate the whole person for life.”

Your generous support to the Academy enabled us to provide our students with rigorous academics, nurture their spiritual formation, and support our teacher leaders’ growth and professional development.

Your gift enabled the Academy to invest in our beloved facilities, continue time honored traditions, and provide opportunities to our students that are truly life changing. And, your unwavering support has allowed NDA to welcome many more deserving students and their families seeking a values-based education steeped in Catholic tradition.

The values and lessons of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Hallmarks are celebrated daily in our actions, words, lessons and school community, thanks to you!

Throughout these pages you will see some of the many ways your support truly had a positive impact on our school community. God is good!

With deep appreciation,

True virtue always shows a community spirit.”
-St. Julie Billiart

LEARNING COMES NATURALLY AT NDA

LAUDATO SI UPDATE

NDA has always been a school that has focused on hands-on learning to help bring core concepts and ideas to life for students and to help ignite a passion for learning.

In November 2021, the Academy of Notre Dame received a $1 million dollar grant to implement Pope Francis’ Laudato Si encyclical. This investment has been transformative for the Academy’s environmental sciences learning curriculum across grade levels.

The additional resources have enabled NDA to leverage its 200+ acre campus into a “natural classroom.”

OVER

THE LAST THREE YEARS, NDA HAS:

• Built a self sustaining geodome that helps to teach students about thermodynamics, solar energy as well as learn the life cycle of plants, freshwater life in the 3,000 gallon fish tank and much more.

• Hired an environmental education coordinator who worked with teachers at all grade levels to build age appropriate environmental science curriculum into their lesson plans. A key focus has included climate change, plant life, food cycles and origins. The curriculum expands well beyond science classes and includes opportunities to shine a light on our natural world and the environment in mathematics, religion, music and art.

• Added courses of study in Environmental Science and STEM in the Upper School.

A gift of $100 enables NDA to purchase soil test kits and seeds for our geodome.

ACADEMY STUDENTS

TRADE APRIL VACATION

Twenty-seven Academy high school students spent their April vacation living our mission and Hallmarks at the Toah Nipi Retreat Center in Rindge, NH.

Students were immersed in acts of charity, self reflection, and prayer. During the week, they created 10 buddy reading benches for our school community which embrace the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur call to educate the whole person for life. They cleaned up the grounds of The Cathedral in the Pines as well as assisted in preparing the burial site for a recently deceased veteran. Students engaged in community building and reflection on the ways in which they can truly live the Mission of St. Julie Billiart, foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

Students at NDA truly live our mission. This trip was remarkable in so many ways. From teenagers choosing to give up their free time in service to others to their commitment to their faith formation. Even putting their phones down for extended periods of time to serve was a bit of a miracle.
- Mrs. Deignan, NDA Campus Minister

Because of you, NDA was able to subsidize the cost of transportation, food and participation so that all students who wanted to participate could.

HALLMARKS

LIVING OUR HALLMARKS

Daily the Academy provides ways to help connect what is happening in the school day with our SND Learning Community Hallmarks. Whether it is praying together as a school community each morning or providing hands-on opportunities for students to act and engage in a manner that reaffirms the meaning of our mission and Hallmarks. Here are just a few of the meaningful ways we are celebrating our Hallmarks throughout our school community:

LITURGIES & RETREATS

We strengthen our faith formation as a school community as we celebrate the goodness of God together at Mass. In addition, each grade level (grades 6-12) has a one-day retreat experience that challenges them to look at their own relationship with God, each other, and the world around them.

COR UNUM

Every month, a group of students serves a dignified, restaurant-style meal at the Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence.

MISSION TRIPS

Mission Trips are held periodically throughout the year, especially during school vacations, where students and faculty can serve another community or those less fortunate.

BLOOD DRIVES

Yearly, NDA holds one or two blood drives through the Red Cross to benefit those in need.

HALLMARKS

FLEECE NAVIDAD

The NDA community creates no-sew blankets to be donated to those in need at Christmastime.

CAMP OUT TO STAMP OUT HUNGER

Each October, NDA Faculty and high school students gather together to camp out in solidarity with the homeless. They work together to make sandwiches, peel and cut vegetables, and work on other service projects to benefit those around us.

OPERATION SANDWICHES

Each month the NDA community comes together through donations and time to put together 400 sandwiches that are then distributed to the homeless and food insecure.

CASUAL DAY FOR A CAUSE

One day each month is a designated dress-down day, where students and faculty can pay $1 to dress in theme or $2 for any casual clothes. Each month, money raised from this day is donated to a predetermined cause.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

NDA families work together to provide meals for 25 families in the community around us who would otherwise not have a Thanksgiving Feast.

CHRISTMAS IN THE CITY

Not everyone feels joy at Christmas, especially due to financial burdens. NDA families rally together to purchase gifts for those less fortunate around us, taking the stress off parents and caregivers.

practice great simplicity with God; only looking at the can do.
- St. Julie Billiart

NICOLE ROCHA CLARK ’98

NDA BOARD CHAIR

CONGRATULATIONS

Nicole Rocha Clark, class of 1998, has the honor of being the first alumna Board Chair at the Academy of Notre Dame. The Director of Pharmacy at MelroseWakefield Hospital, Nicole’s journey truly began at NDA where she realized that her interests and strengths were in the sciences. Through leadership opportunities in clubs and projects, a push to be independent, and the need to make her own decisions, Nicole found her own identity at NDA. She attended NDA for just her high school years, and those four years were critical in shaping her future. As a sophomore, Nicole spent the day with an NDA alumna pharmacist on a job shadow, sparking her interest in her current career. The support and guidance she got throughout high school led to an easy transition to pharmacy school.

When asked about memories from NDA, Nicole was quick to reminisce on the positive experiences she had with Campus Ministry. She also recalled a time she helped wash dishes with Sister Kathryn while waiting for a ride home! Nicole hopes that NDA continues to enrich the lives of all its community members, especially students, and that graduates can feel a lasting connection to NDA. She was welcomed to NDA with open arms, and wants everyone to have the same space to grow that she did, beginning right from PreK-3 through grade 12.

The Academy is blessed to have Nicole as the Board Chair, an alumna who is dedicated to the Academy of Notre Dame and has been since she graduated.

CONGRATULATIONS

JENNIFER SHAW McCOMAS ’90

The Alumni of the Year award is named for the foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, St. Julie Billiart, who was a leader of Christian education and an inspiration to many. This award was established to honor alumni who demonstrate the noble qualities of St. Julie, including leadership, faith, commitment, service, and courage. The St. Julie Award has been presented annually since 1988.

For many years, Jen McComas has given back to the Academy and her dedication and volunteerism has been amazing. She has been an integral member of FoNDA, our Upper School parent group. She has served as treasurer, raising much-needed funding for our athletic teams and co-curricular activities. She is an excellent advocate for both our students and our faculty and staff. She has supported Mission & Ministry with alumni fundraising efforts, has volunteered as a mentor on career day, she has been a parent volunteer for open houses, has assisted with the strategic planning process, and has served on the alumni board. She is an alumna who continuously demonstrates her pride for NDA. Jen has such deep love for the SND mission, the Sisters, and the education that NDA provides that all four of her children have attended the Academy. Her nominator said,

She lives the hallmarks without even realizing it. From her deep faith, her genuine love for others, her willingness to jump in and help whenever she can without the need for accolades. She would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need.
Mrs. Jamie Deignan, NDA Campus Minister, with Jen McComas ’90 at Mass & Tea.

PAYAL AGRAWAL DIVAKARAN ’04

LEADERSHIP SUPPORTER OF THE RACHEL ANN MORRISON ’05 SCIENCE LAB

Payal Agrawal Divakaran, class of 2004, is a leadership supporter of the Rachel Anne Morrison ’05 Science Lab that will be completed in early 2025. She was inspired to give because she was a friend of Rachel Morrison and knew how important science was to her and wants future generations to love science, too. During her time at NDA, Payal was a three-season varsity athlete—playing soccer, basketball and softball—where she made some of her closest friends. She also took many AP classes, including AP Biology with Sue Turkovich, which was a strong influence towards her college ambitions. It was these foundations of experience, learning, and opportunities that allowed her to excel at and pursue a rigorous academic degree (also while playing soccer!) in engineering at MIT.

The opportunity vast and if you pursue it.

Her hope is that today’s students will become grounded in principles like the scientific method, creating a hypothesis, and general experimenting, which will set them up with life skills to see the bigger picture. Her advice is that it continues to be a great and exciting time to go into the sciences because there is so much innovation

and technology. She said, “Even if you don’t go into science, it’s one of the best things you can learn because if you can conquer the sciences you can conquer lots of other things. The opportunity is vast and if you love it, pursue it.” Thank you, Payal, for your support of today’s students and the Morrison family!

Today, Payal is a Partner at .406 Ventures, where she co-leads the healthcare investing practice.

.406 Ventures is a Boston-based venture capital firm with over $1.4B under management. Since its founding in 2005, .406 Ventures has never wavered from its strategy of investing in early-stage enterprise-focused startups in healthcare, data + AI, and cybersecurity.

.406’s world-class founders and digital health companies are transforming healthcare technology and care delivery. Payal leads .406’s investments in AristaMD, Diana Health, Equip, FamilyWell, Heartbeat Health, Humata Health, Nema Health, Nomad Health, OncoveryCare, and Wellist. She also supports Better Life Partners, Laudio, Redox, Wayspring, and WelbeHealth.

Before joining .406 in 2015, Payal co-founded a company called SpotRocket while at Harvard

NDA’S PHAY MEH RECEIVES FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO EMORY UNIVERSITY THROUGH QUESTBRIDGE

Lowell resident Phay Meh ’24 is attending Emory University thanks to a full, four-year QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship.

On receiving the news of the scholarship, Phay said, “I am honored and thrilled to be awarded a Questbridge Match. I am looking forward to studying biology at Emory and taking full advantage of all of the experiences college will offer me. This truly will be a life changing experience for me and my family and I am beyond grateful.”

Out of over 20,800 applicants, QuestBridge’s 50 college partners matched with 2,242 finalists, who are recognized as Match Scholarship Recipients.

“We are thrilled for Phay and her family,” said Dr. James Flynn, NDA Principal. “Phay is hardworking and very creative. She has a true passion for knowledge and is recognized by her teachers for her high intellect and strong analytical skills.”

Dr. Flynn noted that Phay has also been the recipient of one of the Academy’s most prestigious scholarships, the Leo and Joan Mahoney Scholarship, a four-year renewal scholarship. Congratulations Phay!

The Academy has been blessed to have two dedicated volunteer librarians for the past several years. David and Patty Ogden are parents of an alumna and grandparents to two current NDA students. Together, they gave over 600 hours to NDA during FY24, cleaning and updating the NDA library. Students have enjoyed seeing them in the library and classrooms as they’ve read stories to classes, taught students how to use library resources and checked out books to patrons. Thanks to them, the library is now in great shape.

You can help too! Donate your gently used or new books, puzzles, and board games to NDA to be sold at our spring book sale. All proceeds from the book sale will go to the NDA Library.

NDA SPORTS

New Team at NDA

SPORTS

Sports play a vital role in helping NDA students mature into young adults. Research shows that students involved in high school athletics enjoy benefits on and off the field including improved academics, teamwork, leadership development, social and emotional intelligence, self-confidence and time management. As the number of young men enrolled in our Upper School continues to grow, we were pleased to add Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse to our roster of spring sports in 2024. In their first year, our Lancers went 8-7.

Alumni Athletic Award

The Alumni Athletic Award is presented by the NDA Alumni Association. The recipient must be a multi-season athlete who has shown dedication and determination throughout their four years of high school. For the school year 2023-2024, the Alumni Association selected two outstanding individuals: Michael Michaels and Lilly Golden

Michael has served as a quiet leader for both Varsity Basketball and Track & Field. He has mentored numerous underclassmen. He is kind, patient, and thoughtful. While at NDA, he was a collaborative and engaged student, thoroughly invested in his education. Michael is enrolled as a freshman at Temple University where he plans to study biology.

As a twelve season athlete, Lilly was a positive influence on her teammates in all sports she has participated in. Captain of the Varsity Golf and Soccer teams, she has shown true growth in mentoring the younger athletes, especially with the younger players in the soccer, golf and basketball programs. Lilly is attending the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and plans to study business and finance.

Thank You FoNDA

Our student athletes and Upper School clubs benefit greatly from the hard working parent volunteers who are FoNDA, Friends of Notre Dame. Each school year, FoNDA holds a number of fundraisers and runs our sporting event concession stands to help support high school sports and co-curriculars.

SPORTS

Rachel Anne Morrison ’05 Scholar/ Athlete Award

The Rachel Anne Morrison ’05 Scholar/Athlete Award is presented to the senior athlete who has participated in the most sports seasons, has a GPA of 3.5 or higher, is active in the school community, and is continuing on to college. Congratulations to Teagan Peterson, School Year 2023-2024 recipient. A well rounded student, Teagan was involved in school clubs such as Yearbook and Slam Poetry. Outside of school, she volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, Fresh Start Food Gardens, and goes on mission trips through her church parish. She was Captain of the Alpine Ski Team, Girls’ Soccer team, and Girls’ Tennis Team, Senior Class President, and a member of National Honor Society and Spanish Honors Society. This fall, Teagan is attending Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland to major in Biomedical and Biomedical Sciences.

Distinguished Athlete Award

This year two individuals were presented with Distinguished Athlete Awards: Kelsey Branco and Ryu Cespedes. The award is given to individuals who are actively involved in sports and highly engaged in other student activities outside of sports.

Kelsey was a highly involved student and served as Captain of the Girls’ Soccer Team and Track & Field. She was also NHS secretary, founder of Slam Poetry Club, Drama Guild president, captain of the Dance Team and co-president of Glee Club. She was a member of the honor societies: Spanish, Art and National Honor! She embodies the values of St. Julie. This fall, Kelsey is attending Quinnipiac University where she plans to study Physical Therapy.

Ryu explored a variety of interests at NDA and showcased many strengths while at NDA. He served as Co-Captain of the Swimming, Co-Captain of the Indoor Track Team and participated in Track & Field. He was an outstanding musician and vocalist and received the Departments’ Music Award at the 2024 Baccalaureate. He was also a member of the Drama Guild, Glee Club. A strong student at NDA, he excelled in STEM. Ryu is attending Wentworth Institute of Technology where he is studying Electrical Engineering.

They sponsor our “senior nights” for each sport, provide funds so that students may participate in meaningful experiences including competing nationally for Model UN in New York, attending the National Honor Society conference in Washington, DC as well as other club activities. You can help to support NDA athletics and co-curriculars by participating in FoNDA’s annual Mums and Christmas Wreath fundraisers.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2024!

We are so proud of each of you. We cannot wait to see what you accomplish next. Go Lancers! In the words of St. Julie Billiart, our foundress,

“May the peace of the Lord be always with you. May the peace of the Holy Spirit dwell in your hearts.”

NDA’S CAMPUS MINISTER BECOMES ASSOCIATE OF THE SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR

In April, we celebrated NDA’s Campus Minister Mrs. Jamie Deignan who became an Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at a ceremony at The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Spirituality Center in Ipswich, MA. Mrs. Deignan has committed to living the charisms of the Sisters in joy and simplicity with special regard for the poor. During the celebration, Mrs. Deignan was joined by Sr. Joanne Sullivan, and her companion for preparation, Sr. Maria Delaney. -

Live in great peace and charity keeping yourselves closely united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
-St.JulieBilliart

FEEDING THE MINDS OF STUDENTS IN NEED

Thanks to our many supporters, last school year the Academy was able to provide lunch to 38 economically disadvantaged students who met the Federal Free & Reduced Lunch program guidelines. Ensuring that all students can concentrate and learn is a top priority at NDA. Research shows that students who are hungry have a harder time focusing and it negatively impacts their ability to learn. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with one household recently thanking the Academy for this opportunity which has taken a weight off their shoulders knowing their child will have lunch every school day.

A gift of $250 to the Fund for Notre Dame supports a student’s lunch for ½ the school year.

NDA’S DANIELLE COIMBRA ATTENDS MOUNT VERNON RESIDENCY

In June, NDA’s Danielle Coimbra, a 5th grade teacher, participated in a prestigious, week-long teaching residency program at Mount Vernon, home to the first US President, George Washington.

Danielle was just one of 24 invited to attend seminars and learn from leading experts on topics such as George Washington and his role in shaping our country, slavery in the 1700’s, the role of native Americans, the role of women in early America, and the Constitution. She also enjoyed a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn while sitting in Washington’s library in Mount Vernon in Virginia.

“I was beyond thrilled and honored to have been chosen from hundreds of applicants to be part of this amazing learning experience provided by the George Washington Teacher Program and funded through the Mount Vernon Ladies Association,” said Danielle “I have always been interested in George Washington and to have the opportunity to learn in his home is truly the highlight of my 13 year career as an educator.”

Thanks to you, NDA was able to provide a week-long substitute teacher so that Ms. Coimbra could attend this amazing professional development experience.

How happy we are to belong to the good God with our whole hearts
-St.JulieBilliart

Our dedicated faculty and staff work to create a joyful learning environment, one that balances high academic expectations with personalized attention and fun. Lower School students in grades K-8 learn core curriculum and also take classes in world language, art, music, physical education, STEAM and recess!.

In the Upper School, students balance academics with theater, clubs, student government and athletics. Fifty percent of our high school students participate in one or more sports.
